Could this be the beginning of a military coup of Turkey in response to Nice, France??

Turkish Military Says It Has Seized Control From Ankara Government
    http://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/turkey/1.731225

Turkish prime minister says attempted military coup underway; military jets and helicopters seen flying low over Ankara and tanks reported in the streets; two major bridges in Istanbul are closed to traffic.
Quote A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary," Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday.

Turkish security officers detain police officers on the side of the road on July 15, 2016 in Istanbul, during a security shutdown of the Bosphorus

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV. "The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."

Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.

The Turkish military released a statement that it had taken over in the name of democratic order, adding that all existing foreign relations will continue and human rights will remain.

Is this the end of Erdogan??

He thought he was going to bring down the Syrian government, with the help of ISIS, USA and the EU just like Gaddafi's Libya. But he was mistaken.
He wasn't counting on Russia. V. Putin gave him a big surprise and ended his Sultan's dream of a new Ottoman empire.

    Interesting times.

    Finally, I hope they succeed.

The Turkish constitution gives the army the right and duty to protect the constitution when the generals think that the president or the house of the country does not respect the constitutional rules. The Turkish army has done that a few times in the past, and usually gives back the voting rights to the population a few years later.

This is not a coup like it usually is in South America for example.

This is more what it would be if the armies in the West were protecting our constitutions due to rampant corruption and anti-constitutional actions of the governments and its leaders.

At least, this is what many progressive Turks would say.

From what Tangri has posted, I believe I am right in what I am saying.

You are definitely right Flash. These charlatans - who are by far the most dangerous and hideous politicians ever seen in modern Turkish history - have to go but this seems like false flag - a staged event. There's no problem on the streets of Istanbul at the moment but only "news of military control" in some mainroads. I'm afraid tomorrow they may say "a coup has been attempted but not succeed. Erdogan is more powerful than ever". Typical problem - reaction - solution routine.. This might cause the real rise of radical politic Islam in Turkey - and of course it would not stay here. All Europe is also under danger.

According to Reuters, gunfire and explosions could be heard in the capital, where jets have been heard flying overhead, while bridges heading into Istanbul have been currently shut down.

According to AP, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says a group within the military engaged in an attempted coup.

Flashing red Bloomberg headlines confirm as much.

Curiously, the PM refuses to call this coup attempt a coup. Meanwhile president Erdogan is on holiday in the resort town of Bodrum.

As is the norm in Turkey, all social networks Twitter Facebook and YouTube have been shut down, as has the state TV.

As Reuters reported moments ago, Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported, without giving a reason. Dogan News Agency footage showed cars and buses being diverted. CNN Turkey showed two military vehicles and a group of soldiers lined up at the entrance of one of the bridges in Turkey's biggest city. A Turkish official who did not want to be named said soldiers had been deployed in other cities in Turkey, but did not specify which ones. Dogan News Agency reported the national police directorate summoned all police to duty in Ankara.

The signs were obvious earlier. Gabriel Turner, 23, a management consultant from north London, who was on holiday in Istanbul, described to the Telegraph how there had been heavy police and security presence throughout the day before the military coup got underway after sunset.

"Earlier today there were police everywhere. I thought that was normal but the two Turkish girls I was with told me it wasn't normal. We were walking around the centre of Istanbul, at the Grand Bazaar there were police at every entrance and exit with lots of guns.

"A police helicopter was flying very low at sunset, it was about 8pm. It looked like it was searching for something. Later on, at about 10.30 I was in Karakoy, a bar area in the city centre and everyone started looking at their phones. A man who owns the bar told us that the army are taking over everything.

"Then we walked down towards the a quieter area by the sea. While we were walking, my friend said the army had closed brides across the Bosphorus. We could see army helicopters in the sky.

"We went inside a cafe and everyone was on their phones looking worried, texting. Lots of people were running to catch a ferry - because the bridges were shutting and people wanted to get home. Then policemen came out of the ferries on their walkie talkies, looking very alert."

Part of the military is attempting a coup in Turkey, the country’s Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said, following reports of military jets and helicopters flying low over Ankara and Istanbul.

"Some people took illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim told news network NTV. "The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so," he added.

According to the PM, Turkish security forces were doing what needs to be done to resolve the situation.

The Turkish military has issued a statement saying that it has taken over power in the country from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and general security that was damaged,” the statement read.

CNN Turk later reported that president Erdogan, was safe, despite claims by the military that they’ve taken over.

According to Reuters, the coup attempt occurred when Erdogan was on vacation outside the country.

According to various reports, a curfew has been declared in Turkey amid the ongoing attempted coup.

State-run Anadolu news agency reported that the Turkish military chief of staff, Hulusi Akar, was among those taken hostage by the pro-coup forces in Ankara. The hostages are being held at military HQ in the capital.

The office of Erdogan’s ruling AKP party in Istanbul has been surrounded by soldiers, according to Twitter reports.

SOTT Comment: Things be heating up! Erdogan looks like he has sung his last tune.

This coup attempt comes after a dramatic turnaround in Turkish-Russian relations in the last couple of weeks, with Erdogan doing a 180-degree turn to say that Turkey would now cooperate with Russia against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

    And now this.

20th century Turkey has had a number of military coups. A major scandal erupted there once Erdgoan came to power, revealing the existence of a secret network of 'Gladio' operatives (termed 'Ergenekon' in Turkey), who effectively ran the state from the shadows on behalf of the High Cabal of Western Powers.

‌The question is, is this coup because of the very recent change in Erdogan's attitude to Russia and Syria?

Like Joe Quinn wrote last year about and the shoot-down of the Russian jet last year, the military/civilian intel infrastructure in Turkey is pretty much Gladio/NATO-made and owned.

This is the 5th coup in Turkey in the last 55 years. Turkey has historically been riven with internal factions vying for power. Erdogan and his Freedom and Justice party tried to sideline the other factions. First the Kemalist Turkish nationalists (Turkish military and deep state) who are mainly secular, and second the supporters of the super-rich Turkish businessman Fetullah Gulen who is exiled in the USA and resides there at the pleasure of the CIA, etc.

Who exactly is behind this coup remains to be seen, but Erdogan himself has been pointing the finger at Gulen for a while now, and even blamed him for the shoot down of the Russian plane last year.

If true, then this is a CIA coup. Let's face it, it's not like they are new to the practice.

Erdogan and his coterie were such a bunch of idiots though, so it's hard to not see the back of him as a positive thing.

Interestingly, just two days ago, the French government closed its embassy in Istanbul, citing 'security concerns'.

Another possibility is that Erdogan saw the coup coming, then made a last-ditch effort to buy himself a protector by realigning his government with Russia.

    We shall see...

    Update 1

The military has taken over state broadcaster TRT and imposed martial law with the aim of " reinstating constitutional order, human rights and freedoms."

Erdogan appeared via cell phone on CNN Turk, saying the coup "will be overcome" and calling on the people to help in any way they can. (Translation: the situation is dire!)
Quote According to Reuters, the coup attempt occurred when Erdogan was on vacation outside the country. In his TV appearance, the president said he was returning to the Turkish capital of Ankara. The authorities would take all"necessary steps," he said, adding that he didn't believe the coup backers would succeed.

There have been unconfirmed reports that Erdogan's plane has been diverted inside the country, but airports in the Turkish capital had already been closed by the military with all flights diverted.

NBC News reported that Erdogan's aircraft has been denied permission to land in Istanbul, citing a source in the US military. The latest report claims that the Turkish president is seeking asylum in Germany.
There are reports of gunfire and explosions at police special ops HQ in Ankara and at the state broadcaster. A helicopter was spotted opening fire over Ankara. Meanwhile, crowds are angrily confronting the tanks pouring into Ankara...
