the blue flash is all wrong (from my knowledge base-could be wrong) for any known form of conventional explosive. Could have been a thermobaric, but they generally (exclusively) need/require airspace.

Due to the events in the Mideast, I have been anticipating this for a while, perhaps also for Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Before making a total turnaround in some of his attitudes the past couple of weeks, Erdogan had fired the head of Intelligence (Hadan Fikan iirc), who had been helping various gangs in Syria. From which the oil smuggling has been well-exposed. Those actions seemed like a man who was about to drop it and run.

In this case I do believe Erdogan was the leader of a regime which sold out Turkish national interests to our Western system. So the coup is genuine. I wish them all success. It probably won't work though.

    It was a fiasco.

Bunch of amateurs gave the gear rise for radicalism. All upper rank military officers were leashed long time ago(blackmailed or tamed) and they did not support the uprising today. Government pushed the public to the street like a well staged play.
Everything as usual now. They arrested involved low rank officers.

Now Turkish televisions show that, Jihad i civilians arrested 20 years age of soldiers with bare hand, chanting radical slogans.

People, this was the biggest theatre since 9/11 for us. Most people think like that. Some believe this was an attmept of Gulenist deep state. Everything is as usual in Istanbul this morning. But there was more problems in Ankara, it seems. The parliament bombing was in Ankara, not Istanbul.

Whether this is a genuine coup attempt or a staged thing (very likeliy) it will be very useful for radicalists. Alex Jones may be right, this may be the beginning of a very restless era in Europe.

© AFP Turkish solders intervene as people protest against a coup attempt in Istanbul's Taksim Square.

Turkish Prime Minister said that 2,839 soldiers and officers implicated in an overnight coup attempt have been arrested. At least 265 people have been killed, including 104 pro-coup participants, while 1,440 people were injured in military action in Istanbul and Ankara.

According to Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, those arrested included ordinary soldiers and high-ranking officers. He added that about 20 of those who planned the overnight coup were killed and 30 more were wounded.

Acting chief of staff of the armed forces Umit Dundar said during a press conference that more than 190 people have been killed since the attempted coup was launched.

“1,563 soldiers were arrested, and 104 military who took part in the coup were killed in clashes. Ninety others were also killed, including 41 [pro-government] police officers, 2 [pro-government] soldiers and 47 civilians,” he said.

Pro-government forces have seized control of the top military HQ building, but there are still some groups of rebels resisting, a Turkish official said on Saturday, as cited by Reuters.

General Hulusi Akar, who heads Turkey’s armed forces, has been rescued from rebel captivity. He was the most senior military official in their hands.

The rebels reportedly have several helicopter gunships in their disposal, but loyalists have threatened to shoot them down as they downed at least one aircraft carrying out attacks on government buildings.

A faction of the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the government on Friday night, employing tanks and attack helicopters. The conspiracy appears to have failed, however, as they didn’t manage to capture any senior government officials and couldn’t win wide support from the Turkish military.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on his civilian supporters to take to the streets of Istanbul, which they did. Rebel soldiers, who called on the population to stay indoors, apparently didn’t have the resolve to launch a full-scale war against civilians in Turkey’s biggest city.

The coup attempt began on Friday night when warplanes and helicopters buzzed over Ankara and rebel troops moved in to seal off the bridges over the Bosphorus Strait.

Tanks attacked several government buildings, including the Turkish parliament, as lawmakers hid in shelters inside the building.

Several airports were shut down and access to social media was blocked in the first hours of turmoil.

The TRT state television and the Turkish branch of CNN were seized and ceased broadcasting.

The tide turned early on Saturday as rebels lost momentum and failed to win support.

Government officials accused Fethullah Gulen, an influential cleric in self-imposed exile in the United States, of instigating the plot. Gulen used to be an ally of Erdogan, but turned into his fierce opponent.

In 2013, Turkey was shaken by a corruption scandal involving senior government figures. Erdogan claimed it had been set up by Gulen and launched a crackdown on his supporters in the police and judiciary.

Even though Erdogan appears to have kept his hold on power, the coup attempt is a clear signal that some of his policies are badly failing, Sreeram Chaullia from the Jindal School of International Affairs told RT.

Under his watch, Turkey has picked a fight with Kurdish insurgents, contributed to the chaos in Syria and Iraq, antagonized Iran and Russia, and to some extent made Turkey a liability to NATO, he explained.

“I have a feeling that this coup is linked to the security crisis. A series of terrorist attacks signal the inability of the Turkish government to stop these attacks. It has angered some sections of the security establishment that believe that they can do a better job because Erdogan is just playing politics with everything,” he said.

Modern Turkey has undergone three successful military coups over its century-long history, the latest in 1980.

The Turkish military has traditionally been the guarantor of the country’s secularity, while Erdogan’s platform is Islamist in nature. Critics accuse the Turkish president of trying to turn the country into an Islamic state with him as its dictatorial head.

Erdogan, who has been in power since 2002, has faced being toppled by the military before, but the alleged plot dubbed Operation Sledgehammer was prevented in 2010 by a series of arrests. Some 300 alleged conspirators were sent to prison at that time.

Turkey is a member of NATO and a key US ally in the region, providing its airbase for the ongoing military campaign in neighboring Syria. It also hosts American nuclear weapons, with an estimated 50 to 90 B61 bombs stored at the Incirlik base.

Why did Turkish coup plot fail?

    By Paul Kirby

Soldiers involved in the coup surrender on the bridge over the Bosphorus in Istanbul (16 July)

Soldiers involved in the coup eventually surrendered on the bridge over the Bosphorus

For several hours on Friday night hundreds of Turkish soldiers appeared to have
taken control of key areas of the main cities of Ankara and Istanbul.

There was little sign of President Recep Erdogan as the plotters took over buildings
and media outlets. They needed to secure the support of the public and especially
    the majority of the military.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim appeared to be leading resistance to the coup, but as
most Turks know, it is President Erdogan who wields the power and has designs on
    extending it.

If the coup was going to succeed, the conspirators had to keep him out of the
picture and they were unable to do so. "I am the chief commander," he said later.

I'm much more concerned about the use of a nuke, albeit a low-yield one, like those some allege were used on the twin towers on 9/11, than I am of the politics behind the coup...if using them is THIS commonplace..imagine if one goes off in the NYC subway..the Santa Monica pier..this should greatly concern everyone.

Erdogan's reaction to the failed coup may soon make many Turks regret the military’s lack of success.

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a politician not known for subtlety. His reaction to the failed coup may soon make many Turks regret the military’s lack of success. Erdogan’s political ambitions are almost without limit. Now his name is the law – backed up with popular support (at least for the time being). Who knows – will he make himself president for life?

[A note on the margin: Was Erdogan behind the coup attempt? This is possible considering how badly it was executed. Whether this is true or not, Erdogan’s powers are now almost boundless].

What we know now is the attempted coup was planned and executed by a small number of army officers. They justified their actions with the following statement:
Quote “Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and general security that was damaged. All international agreements are still valid. We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”
The irony of these words should be obvious to all: what the plotters hoped to regain for Turkey will certainly be lost as Erdogan exacts his gleeful revenge. The plotters had hoped to restore political stability to the country; the only thing they succeeded in doing is just the opposite.

    What can we expect now?

The military will be entirely purged of element not loyal to Erdogan. This is really bad news – the military was the key institution that could exercise a degree of independence and stand up to the president. It will not longer be the Turkish military – it will become Erdogan’s private instrument of enforcement.

Civil liberties, particularly the media, will be assaulted with even greater force. The judiciary – already besieged – may recall the days before the coup attempt as a time of relative freedom.

Turkey’s “Kurd problem” will only worsen and Ankara’s inconsistent policies confronting terrorism will probably generate more terror as a result.

Erdogan’s experiment with democracy and political Islam is now even more confusing. Erdogan now has even more power to decide the limits and uses of Islam in politics. This is dangerous. Established laws and legal enforcement should regulate this and not by personal whim.

Turkey’s strained relations with the EU are now ever more complicated. The only upside for Brussels is Erdogan is a known quantity – more erratic behavior is on order.

For Washington, a successful or failed coup is of no importance. As long as Erdogan is loyal to NATO, the Americans will happily tolerate the Sultan.

Before the coup attempt, the military said Turkish troops would not be sent to Syria. Erdogan’s hands are now free. Is he foolish enough to embark on a military campaign that would most likely fail? Yes, maybe.

Will Erdogan stop or reverse Turkey’s rapprochement with Russia? Probably not – having Turkey at odds with such an important country is detrimental to Erdogan political ambitions.

If the coup had succeeded would have Turkey’s prospects improved? This is possible. Post-failed coup, Turkey’s prospects are indeed grim.
