'Potentially Hazardous' Monster Asteroid Will Fly Past Earth February 4th

On February 4, 2018 'potentially hazardous asteroid' 2002 AJ129 will be flying past us, at a distance of about 2.6 million miles away. At over 10 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon at its closest point, this will be a completely safe encounter, but an important one for scientists studying these relics of the early solar system.

Discovered just over 16 years ago, on January 15, 2002, this asteroid - formally named (276033) 2002 AJ129 - was labelled as 'potentially hazardous', due to its size and how close it gets during its flybys of Earth. Any asteroid that is larger than 459 feet wide, and comes closer to Earth than 4.6 million miles (0.05 astronomical units) during any of its close approaches, is added to this category.

2002 AJ129 is somewhere between 0.3 km and 0.75 miles wide, and between the years 1900 and 2200, it makes 4 close approaches that are within the 0.05 AU limit, so it easily qualifies.

This flyby, on Feb 4, will be the closest approach by the asteroid since Feb 6, 1904, when it was just over 1.8 million miles away, and it will be the closest until Feb 5, 2087, when it will be just over 2.3 million miles away.

Such a close pass by such a large asteroid gives radio astronomers an excellent opportunity to study the object, in detail, as it whizzes past. Already, the radio telescopes at the Arecibo and Goldstone observatories are scheduled to be pointed at 2002 AJ129 during its time of closest approach.

"Our calculations indicate that asteroid 2002 AJ129 has no chance - zero - of colliding with Earth on Feb. 4," said Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a NASA press release.

On This Day In Space | January 24th 1986 : Voyager 2 Flies Past Uranus

On January 24, 1986, NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Uranus. This was the first time any spacecraft had ever visited Uranus. Its twin spacecraft, Voyager 1, only made it as far as Saturn before veering out of the plane of the solar system. Voyager 2 flew within 50,600 miles of Uranus and took the first and only close-up photos of the planet. During the encounter, Voyager 2 examined the rings around Uranus and discovered 10 of its 27 known moons. Voyager 2 also found that the planet's magnetic field is a twisted mess thanks to its bizarre sideways orientation. The spacecraft is now on its way out of the solar system and headed towards interstellar space.

Breaking News: TRAPPIST-1 Star System Contains Two Potentially Habitable Planets

It’s been less than a year since astronomers detected seven planets around TRAPPIST-1, a remarkable star system located 39 light years from Earth. New research suggests life could take root on at least two of these planets, thanks to a fortuitous orbital quirk.

TRAPPIST-1 has more planets than any other system we know of outside our own. These seven planets, all of which are roughly the size of Earth, are in orbit around an ultracool M dwarf—a small, red star that gets no warmer than 2,430 celsius or 4,400 F, which is less than half the heat our Sun produces. New research published in Astronomy & Astrophysics identifies two planets around TRAPPIST-1 as the most likely to harbor life, including one that may even feature a vast ocean of water.

On January 25, 2004, NASA's Opportunity rover landed on Mars! This was the second of NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers to land on the red planet. Its counterpart, the Spirit rover, arrived just three weeks earlier. Opportunity is now the longest-running Mars rover mission. It was only intended to last 90 days, but the rover has been trekking around the Red Planet for more than 50 times its expected lifetime. Over the years, Opportunity has found meteorites on Mars, observed dust storms and looked for clues about the presence of water in Mars' ancient past.
