Calgary area received a massive storm yesterday evening ... tennis ball sized hail, extreme winds and rain like I've never seen before ... everywhere was flooded - city's drainage system could not remotely keep up.

Reports say the large hail was falling up to 100km/h per hour in some places ... looking at the damage, that is believable.

We'll get storms this intense once every few years, so not unheard of for our area (we are in a tornado zone sort of), but our storms are not regularly this extreme at all.

Ahhh! Thank you! I couldn't find any good video at the time I posted. It was brutal! Where I am we didn't get hit too hard with the hail (not all parts of the city can say the same), but I tried to go for a drive after to see the damage but the roads were flooded everywhere, I didn't get very far. It eventually drained. It was a hot day and everyone mowed their lawns earlier that day -- likely didn't help the lack of drainage situation with all the grass trimmings.

Edit: Early loose estimates are ~$1,000,000,000 in damages caused by the storm (which extended North and East of Calgary as well.

Dust Storm Travelled More Than 5, 000 Miles Above The Ocean Toward The Gulf Of Mexico

    Recorded 22nd & Published 23rd June 2020

The storm will travel more than 5, 000 miles above the ocean towardthe Gulf of Mexico!

Weather forecasts indicate that the eastern winds will push the dust storm to travel more than 5,000 miles over the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Gulf of Mexico and relatively affect the shores of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico coast, thus affecting two continents more than 5,000 miles apart!

What is the impact of the dust wave on the hurricane season?

Dust waves rushing from western Africa to the Atlantic are common and frequent at this time of year, but they always negatively affect seasonal cyclone activity and may prevent them from occurring permanently in this period, raising drought levels in the middle and lower atmospheres.

Shear winds are also a reason for preventing storms and hurricanes from forming, and by shear winds here we mean the sudden difference in wind speed or direction in different layers of the atmosphere, which destroys any initial construction to form storms and hurricanes.

A special sunrise and sunset of the sun in the coming days on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico

This wave of dust and dust when it reaches coastal areas that are accustomed to the purity and purity of the atmosphere will make sunsets and sunrises a distinctive sight, so that the horizon tends to the color of the garroup and the sunrise to warm up due to the presence of dust particles, which is rarely considered for these coastal areas.

Concerns Over the Three Gorges Dam Grow, as China Begins Censoring News of the Floods

"The Three Gorges Dam in China has become a center of attention, as waters rise and local authorities issue flood warnings nearby. Taiwan News reports that a prominent Chinese hydrologist, Wang Weiluo, is claiming the dam "could collapse at any moment." He pointed to existing concerns over the dam's design, construction, and process for inspections.

Chinese authorities, meanwhile, are declaring that information on the flood in Chongqing is "sensitive information," which subjects it to censorship. The floods have already hit 26 provinces, required emergency rescue of over 213,000 people, and damaged over 171,000 homes. The situation may grow worse as the 980 reservoirs are impacted.

These stories and more in this episode of Crossroads."

Massive flooding in south China Three Gorges Sanxia Dam at risk of collapse any time
    6/26/20
    https://vietreader.com/world/2438-ma...-any-time.html

(Most likely the statistics are on the conservative side. One of the cities downstream from the dam which would be inundated is Wuhan. What would be the outcome if laboratories that bio-engineer viruses, etc. were flooded? No word on whether they are preparing for that eventuality that I've seen so far...)

"As southern China sees some of its worst flooding in 80 years, videos on internet taken by local Chinese have surfaced showing extreme quantities of water inundating 10 provinces and cities, threatening the vaunted Three Gorges Dam.

As China's Yangzi River Basin enters its flood season, the upper reaches of the Three Gorges Dam are seeing the highest flood levels since 1940. Weather China has issued its highest warning for flooding and rain for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangzi River to Guizhou.

The rainfall is expected to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday (June 23 and 24). Flood warnings have been issued in more than 10 provinces and municipalities in China, including Guizhou, Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Guangxi.

On June 1, storms and landslides started to cause erupted in southern China, causing 7,300 houses to be destroyed and affecting the lives of nearly 8 million people as of June 21. Local officials roughly estimated the economy's loss was about $ 2.9 billion.
Flooding in Guizhou Province like a waterfall taken on a Chinese twister.
In Guizhou, torrential floods have inundated farmland and houses, with 6 counties submerged. Injuries and deaths are unknown, with reports ranging between three to 20 people.

The Chongqing Municipal Hydrological Monitoring Station on Monday (June 22) issued its first red alert flood warning in 80 years for the Qijiang River. It is predicted that there will be severe flooding in the area within 8 hours.

Based on live Chinese news broadcasts, it seems that the flood is currently passing through Qijiang District. Gas stations, street lights, and telephone poles have disappeared beneath a brown soup of floodwaters, reported the taiwannews.Massive flood in the south of China, photo snapped from video by local Chinese on Weibo.
Many people are believed to be trapped by the floodwaters in the province's Bajiao Township. In Tongren City in Guizhou's Yanhe Tujia Autonomous County, a landslide has sealed off the highway tunnel to Guanzhou Township where houses and shops are also swamped with floodwaters.

The Guizhou Meteorological Bureau has continued to issue red warnings for torrential rain in Wuchuan County, Zheng'an County, Yanhe County, and Tongzi County. In addition, 13 counties under the jurisdiction of Zunyi City and Tongren City have issued yellow flood warnings.

Extremely heavy rains continue to batter southern China. (AP photo)
Given that the Qijiang is a tributary of the Yangzi River, the Three Gorges Dam will be facing its biggest test since it opened in 2003. At least one Chinese scientist, hydrologist Wang Weiluo, is questioning the dam's integrity, given numerous cracks observed and substandard concrete used in construction.

China's Three Gorges Dam in danger of collapse any time
Scientist Wang Weiluo said that the Three Gorges Dam was not as stable as many people thought. Besides, Mr. Wang pointed out that the design, construction and quality assessment of the dam were all done by the same expert teams and the project completion time was too fast.

At a press conference on June 10, Chinese Vice Minister of Water Resources Ye Jianchun also acknowledged that the water level on at least 148 rivers in the country exceeded the warning level, proving that the flood control capacity of The Three Gorges Dam at a limit.

The photo on Google Map shows a section of the Three Gorges Dam been dented and has not received an explanation from the Management Group - Photo: South China Morning Post / Google Maps
In addition, Mr. Wang also said that the biggest concern was the cracks and the quality of concrete did not meet the standards during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. According to him, if the dam breaks, there will be catastrophic consequences for people living in the lower Changjiang River and warning people to prepare for evacuation as soon as possible.

According to the online television channel CNTV, the water level inside the Three Gorges dam was over 2 meters higher than the flood control standard.

Xinhua cited data from China Three Gorges Dam Group, which said that in the past 17 years, a total of 873,800 vessels carrying 12.23 million passengers and 1.46 billion tons of cargo had stopped by the Three Gorges Dam."

3 Gorges Dam Break Predicted - Destructive Power 25 X Natural Flood
    6/7/20
    新紀元
    16.2K subscribers

"The latest study found that the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River not only does not have a flood control effect, but its destructive power during flood discharge can reach 25 times that of natural floods. A Hong Kong geomancer predicted that the earthquake in the southwest of the mainland in early summer will cause the dam to break, causing severe floods. Dr. Wang Weiluo, a well-known hydraulic expert who has long been devoted to the research of the Three Gorges Project, cited the research data of domestic scholars and warned the Chinese people that the Three Gorges Dam not only does not have the role of flood control, but after it was put into operation, a series of changes happened to the flood propagation characteristics of the Jingjiang River downstream. The total propagation time of floods in the upper Jingjiang section (Yichang to Shishou) has been shortened from about 30 hours to 6 hours at the most, 5 times faster than natural flood, and the destructive power of the discharged floods is 25 times that of natural flood. Dr. Wang Weiluo further explained: "Whether the "Three Gorges Project" increases water-carrying capacity or reduces it (assuming 5000 cubic meters per second), it changes the nature of river flow and forms a kind of vertical wave propagation (a bit like a tsunami) ." Wang Weiluo said, "Its waves will have a height, and then it will go forward. Because it has this height and then goes forward, its speed is 5 times the original. The kinetic energy are 2nd power of the speed, the destructive power is 25 times the original. The water flow time from Yichang to the downstream cities is significantly shortened, so the pressure of the downstream floods is increased in a short time. It means that all the data of the "Three Gorges Project" flood control plan are wrong." On May 11th, mainland media reported that the Three Gorges Reservoir vacated more than 70% of its flood control capacity to meet the flood season. The water level dropped to 155 meters, eight days earlier than the same period last year, and only 10 meters higher than the flood control limit water level of 145 meters. The report said that it was less than a month before the arrival of the main flood season on June 10 of the Three Gorges section. As the backbone project in the Yangtze River flood control system, the Three Gorges Reservoir is accelerating the water level drop to free up storage capacity for flood control this summer. Up to now, about 16.5 billion cubic meters of flood storage capacity has been released, more than 70% of the total flood storage capacity. Since the completion of the Three Gorges Dam, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China have suffered severe floods and waterlog, especially in Hubei Province. Tens of millions of people are affected each year. In mid-July 2010, the Yangtze River Basin experienced the largest flood since 1998. There are serious floods in the upstream and downstream areas of the Three Gorges Dam, including the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Currently in China there is no river which does not have a reservoir and dam, and flood formation is no longer generated in a natural fasion. 45 years ago, the Banqiao Reservoir broke, known as the "75.8 Extraordinary Flood". At that time, the flood flooded more than 30 counties and cities and 17.8 million mu (11,872.6km²) of farmland, causing 240,000 deaths. When the Banqiao Dam broke, the maximum flow rate of the flood reached more than 30 kilometers per second, and the Train oil tanker could be washed out of tens of kilometers. The discharged flood flow rate of the Three Gorges Project was more than 60 kilometers per second. Its destructive power is far greater than the flood when the Banqiao dam broke. He Weifang, a law professor at Peking University, said that in the early years experts believed the advantage of the Three Gorges Dam was that it could effectively control the downstream water volume. Now the situation is reversed: when the downstream is dry, the Reservoir needs to store water; when the downstream is flooded, it needs to discharge the flood. Not long ago, Hong Kong Feng Shui master Quan Lang predicted that the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River would collapse during a powerful earthquake. She said on the YouTube channel that from May to June this year, there will be a severe earthquake in southwestern China with scale of 8.3 or higher. She said that the earthquake will directly endanger the Three Gorges Dam, and will cause the Three Gorges Dam to break and collapse, causing severe floods, and this flood will have a large impact on China. She said that there will be severe floods in many places, and the number of people affected is particularly large, and some people will lose their lives in the floods."

Just bumping this. For anyone not fully aware of the situation evolving here, if the dam were indeed to break, the resulting titanic catastrophe would be pretty hard to describe.

If it happens, China's status as a world power would certainly be affected.
And the rest of the world would probably have to scramble to begin manufacturing things that China has mainly been producing, as China's industries would be affected as well.
I'm sure a lot of us experienced a huge sense of relief when the work on the Oroville dam in California was successfully repaired, but it looks like repairing the 3 Gorges may not be possible at all.

One report said that the Chinese Communist Party is threatening anyone who posts videos of the flooding, saying they will be guilty of a criminal offense.
Most of the clips I've seen are composites of other clips that were already posted, so there aren't many new ones circulating.
Another report said that 400 million would be in danger if the dam collapses, but even if it doesn't collapse, the flooding which all the dams have been unable to contain have already endangered countless lives.
The following report says the government did not issue a warning to evacuate because the 3 Gorges dam would be discharging, and the water was released under cover at night, so people were found drowned in their beds the following morning.

A brief history of the 3 Gorges Dam

    From the article here:https://futureofworking.com/4-advant...ee-gorges-dam/
"Triggering an earthquake is one of the major concerns for the dam. The Three Gorges dam sits on two major faults, the Jiuwanxi and the Zigui-Badong. When water level changes, the faults are strained. As a result, fault activity intensifies and induces earthquakes.

Reservoir-induced seismicity was what many scientists believed happened at the Oroville Dam in California. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Oroville was the largest earthen dam in the US. It was built in the 1950s along an active fault line and was filled in 1968. When the water supply was restored to full capacity seven years later, an unusual series of earthquakes were felt in the area. Not a lot of damage was done, however, as the area was not highly populated.

In China, however, earthquakes have been proven to be connected to hydropower plants, especially those located in river basins that are densely populated and are seismically active. At least 19 earthquakes have been blamed on dams by scientists including the 6.1 magnitude earthquake near the Xinfengjiang Dam in Guangdong province. And many fear that the Three Gorges Dam may be next."

I dreamt this morning of people being taken from their beds by fierce floods. It was very vivid and very awful. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about wnlight’s thread about population changes and wonder if he has just got his dates wrong? Maybe the dream was about me being preoccupied by that. I used to dream about flooding a lot several years ago but then nothing until this morning. I believe many people here have experienced a similar phenomenon.

1/4 China Flood Dam Pressure Intensifies | three gorges dam

( THE BEST ACCOUNTING I'VE SEEN SO FAR)

"China is facing one of its largest floods in History. Almost One-forth of the country is now suffering from floods caused by severe and ongoing-rainstorms.
Three Gorges Dam once again become the focus of attention. Beijing’s official media reported on June 21 that, on the previous day the flow of the dam had increased to 26,500 cubic meters per second.
1:24 Former China Water Expert, Dr. Wang Wei Luo said, the CCP had claimed the purpose of the dam was to control flood, but its real purpose was to generate electricity and to be able to claim the so-called "World’s largest dam”.

2:48 According to GIS calculations, if the Three Gorges Dam collapses or floods at 100% capacity, the flood will reach Yichang in half an hour. The water in Yichang will flow at a speed of 65 kilometers per hour, for at least 4 hours, Yichang will be submerged under 20 meters of water. The loss of human life in Yichang alone will be 500,000. The peak of the flood will reach Wuhan within 10 hours and Nanjing within a day. It is still too early to predict how many casualties could be caused.

3:18 Some opinions also noted that, the world is calling for the investigation on the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic and many evidence points to Wuhan. However, if the Three Gorges Dam collapses or floods at full capacity, Wuhan, where the P4 laboratory locates, will be flooded and critical evidence could be destroyed.

3:45 In 2014, Chinese media reported that over the past 20 years, Chinese people had handed over approximately 63 billion US dollars to the Three Gorges Dam.

4:33 Huang Wanli, former professor of the Department of Water Resources at Tsinghua University, warned in 1957 about the potential disaster if the dam was built.

5:23 In fact, on June 11, China’s Ministry of Water Resources held a press conference. This is the first time that China’s official department admitted the uncertainty of the dam’s capability.

5:50 In 1975, Henan Province was hit by typhoon Nina and the aftermath was the collapse of 62 dams, including the largest Banqiao Dam."

"Chinese state media reported the floodgates were opened in order to free up storage capacity to meet possible floods in the near future, while a local official claims it was for “power generation”. Epoch Times had previously received leaked government documents showing that authorities opened the floodgates, as heavy rains had caused waters to rise above the flood threshold.

This followed reports of the CCP secretly releasing waters from the dam, which flooded the entire city of Yichang. Residents in the path of the flood were not alerted ahead of time, and many were killed, including by electrocution from not shutting off power ahead of time.

And China has announced a vaccine for the new coronavirus, after it skipped the final test phase, and will now begin testing it on Brazilians.

These stories and more in this episode of Crossroads."

    Jade Mine Landslide In Myanmar

    Recorded & Published 2nd 2020

Yangon, Myanmar At least 162 people have died and others are feared trapped after a landslide at a jade mine in northern Myanmar's Kachin State, according to officials.
The landslide was triggered by heavy rain and swept through the site in the jade-rich area of Hpakant on Thursday morning.
Myanmar Fire Department said 162 bodies had been recovered as of 7:15 p.m. Thursday local time and another 54 people have been taken to hospital. Local lawmaker Khin Maung Myint warned that the death toll is expected to rise, but heavy rain had forced rescue efforts to be called off.

Images from the Facebook page of Myanmar's fire service showed a rescue team pulling bodies out of the mud and carrying them up a steep rock face that appears to be flooding.
