Frankfurt used as remote hacking base for the CIA: WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks documents reveal CIA agents were given cover identities and diplomatic passports to enter the country. The base was used to develop hacking tools as part of the CIA's massive digital arsenal.

WikiLeaks released a trove of CIA documents on Tuesday that it claimed revealed details of its secret hacking arsenal.

The release included 8,761 documents that it claimed revealed details of "malware, viruses, trojans, weaponized 'zero day' exploits, malware remote control systems and associated documentation."

The leaks purportedly revealed that a top secret CIA unit used the German city of Frankfurt am Main as the starting point for numerous hacking attacks on Europe, China and the Middle East.

Frankfurt base

WikiLeaks reported that the group developed trojans and other malicious software in the American Consulate General Office, the largest US consulate in the world. The programs focused on targets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The documents revealed that CIA experts worked in the building under cover and included advice for life in Germany.

"Do not leave anything electronic or sensitive unattended in your room," it told employees, also advising them to enjoy Lufthansa's free alcohol "in moderation."

The Frankfurt hackers, part of the Center for Cyber Intelligence Europe, were said to be given diplomatic passports and a State Department identity. It instructed employees how to safely enter Germany. A WikiLeaks tweet published an section of the Frankfurt information.

The consulate was the focus of a German investigation into US intelligence capabilities following the 2013 revelation that NSA agents had tapped Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone.

German daily "Süddeutsche Zeitung" reported the building was known to be home to a vast network of intelligence personnel including CIA agents, NSA spies, military secret service personnel, Department of Homeland Security employees and Secret Service employees. It reported the Americans had also established a dense network of outposts and shell companies in Frankfurt.

Televisions turned into bugs

An intelligence expert who examined the dump, Rendition Infosec founder Jake Williams, told news agency Associated Press the documents appeared legitimate.

Bob Ayers, a retired US intelligence official currently working as a security analyst told AP the release was "real bad" for the agency.

Jonathan Liu, a spokesman for the CIA, told AP: "We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents."

According to WikiLeaks the documents revealed that the CIA could remotely activate certain Samsung smart televisions equipped with cameras and microphones to turn them into bugs.

Smartphones hacked

WikiLeaks also claimed that if the CIA had hacked a cell phone, it could then bypass encryption methods used by popular chat programs such as Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal and Confide. This prompted some concern at first online that all such messaging "Apps" were no longer effectively encrypted - but the exploit only applied to people whose phones are already compromised. According to the leaks, the CIA has undocumented exploits on popular smartphone models.

In a series of tweets NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden said deliberately leaving vulnerabilities in software and hardware open left public users susceptible to attacks.

Snowden said the documents appeared to be genuine.

The documents also revealed that the CIA had the ability to conduct false flag attacks using malware stolen from other nations.

According to WikiLeaks the trove showed that the CIA had lost control of its arsenal of hacking tools.

WikiLeaks said it was given the files by an anonymous source who wanted to shed public light on the hacking programs.

The collection of documents vastly outnumbered the trove on the NSA released by Snowden.

I can only speak for myself and the situation here.
Normally I smile at the idea that America is the saviour of the world -- however this evil is affecting the whole world and me too.
I believe that Trump has it in mind to drain the swamp and if he is succesful there will be a knock on effect to the UK and every other country that is affected by Draconian measures --It comes from the same source worldwide --its not just an American problem.
So I wholeheartedly support this fight against this tyranny.
I had just had not appreciated how widespread the tentacles of this malevolence is.

Make no mistake that in saying "We the People", the march won't by any stretch of the imagination represent all the people of this country; it will represent the Right, and Team Trump. There won't be many democrats or people on the Left high fiving each other and pushing their chests out proud for this event.

This will represent roughly half of the nation, with the other half watching on and thinking "this is ridiculous, enough already, let it go it's over".

I'll be watching though, should be something to see with the horns and all.

Where do you expect people who are not the biggest fans of totalitarianism and tyranny to side? Should we just keep out of it?

I think it exactly the opposite of what you say it is.

If it turns out Trump was a lie (although I'm not seeing much evidence so far) then it will be lesson learned.

Other than that, as an ex socialist in a completely different country, I'd be out there on the march to stop the creeping advancement of corporate fascism (communism in the states).

President Trump and attorney Sidney Powell met for a Friday night huddle in the Oval Office, according to the New York Times - which claims they discussed the idea of Powell becoming a special counsel to investigate voter fraud "according to two people briefed on the discussion" (and how were they privy?).

The report goes on to claim that Rudy Giuliani, Trump's personal lawyer who publicly distanced their legal team from Powell's efforts to prove widespread election fraud through rigged Dominion Voting Systems machines, opposed the idea - despite rumors that the former NY Mayor sought to have the Department of Homeland Security to seize voting machines to analyze them.

Mr. Giuliani joined the discussion by phone, while Ms. Powell was at the White House for a meeting that became raucous at times, according to one of the people briefed on what took place. Other administration officials drifted in and out of the meeting, two of the people briefed said, and the White House counsel, Pat A. Cipollone, pushed back on the ideas being proposed.

The notion of Powell becoming a special counsel reportedly "sent shock waves through the president's circle," as Trump has been in contact with her in recent days despite the campaign's public distancing. According to the Times, her claims that Dominion machines were used to rig the election are 'baseless' - despite claims to the contrary.

The Times also notes that President Trump has pushed outgoing Attorney General William Barr to appoint a special counsel to investigate election fraud, as well as a separate one to investigate Biden family corruption centered around Joe Biden's son, Hunter - whose laptop contained evidence that Joe was involved in Hunter's Ukrainian and China dealings. These claims were backed up by two former Biden family business associates in both sworn affidavits and electronic evidence.

Does any of this matter if the Supreme Court won't even look at the evidence?

I have to agree. This is something much larger than typical party affiliation/ideology. Both parties have lost their way. It would seem 75% of those in the Halls on Power on the so-called right are also okay with censorship, draconian control and taxation (among other things) without representation.

Anyone who condones a banana-Republic-like theater that installs leaders via the pretext of a sham elections has lost their way.

America waged a revolution against the greatest power on earth for far less....

I would say it's really about those ideals the American people secured back in 1776 vs. serfdom and slavery and a boot on a human face forever. If we must say the underlying ideology of those factions represent right vs. left then so be it; although there was a time in the not-too-distant past when the left embraced free speech, condemned censorship, and marched for freedom.

It's very clear that the Left must be destroyed, and it's the Right that's going to do it, if not even the highest courts in the land will see things their way.

For the sake of argument however, let's say that not one member here has even the slightest inclinations towards the Right, it's solely good vs. evil. Even under those conditions what you're doing is hitching your good vs. evil wagon to America's hard Right Wing that Trump has absolutely electrified.

That's the vehicle you're employing, and partnering with, to see that evil is vanquished. Left and Right are bandied about here all the time (it's all over the place), with virtually all links going to hard Right Wing sites. Why is it so difficult to just simply say "yes, this is the vehicle to victory" if nothing else?

I'm confused. Why are we pigeon-holing these concepts to the left/right? Can you define what the "right" is, as you understand it?

I'm talking about freedom--as those explicitly enumerated in the Bill of Rights--vs. serfdom, as the living conditions of those living under Communist China, North Korea, Eritrea, Turkmenistan, etc.

Can't we just say liberty vs. oppression? Or would that render our ideologies into cognitive dissonance if former is associating with the right and the latter to the left?
