Scores missing in India after glacier causes deadly flooding
Dhaka Tribune reports:
Floods force evacuation of villages and witnesses report avalanche creating wall of dust, rock and water
Over a hundred people were missing after a huge chunk of glacier fell into a river in northern India on Sunday, setting off a torrent that inundated a hydro power complex and swept away roads and bridges, authorities said.
By the time nightfall had forced the suspension of the search, seven bodies had been found while officials said between 125 and 200 people remained unaccounted for.
Earlier in the day a glacier on the Nanda Devi national park broke up and fell into Dhauliganga river, setting off the high-speed floods that engulfed everything in their path.
Videos shared online by terrified residents showed the water tearing down cranes at a power plant and smashing up bridges and roads further downstream."

"Uttarakhand-A “glacier break” at Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district today triggered a massive flood in the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers. While A dozen bodies have already been recovered, over 150 people are feared are still missing and feared to be dead. These people are mostly those working inside power projects. About 16 people, who were stuck in a tunnel of Tapovan dam, had been rescued at the time of writing. Efforts were on to rescue others trapped in another tunnel, which was being coordinated by the Army and ITBP. This natural disaster has also triggered debate among ecologists and environmental activists over building too many dams in the Himalayan region.
Videos of this tragic, as well as, horrifying incident have appeared on social media platforms. Videos showed scary scenes of the water tearing through a narrow valley below the power plant and destroying almost everything which came in its spate appeared."
"According to the initial report issued by the Union Government, due to the glacier burst near Joshimath and avalanche, the flow of water increased greatly and first the water level started rising in the Rishiganga River and later in Alaknanda River. The massive flood washed away the Rishiganga small hydro project of 13.2 MW."
"The flash flood also affected the downstream hydro project of NTPC at Tapovan on the river Dhauliganga, which is a tributary of the river Alaknanda."
"There is no danger of downstream flooding and the rise in water level has been contained, as per the information given by the Central Water Commission (CWC). There is also no threat to the neighbouring villages. At the same time, the concerned agencies of the Centre and the State were asked to keep a strict vigil on the situation, and a team from DRDO, which monitors avalanches, is being flown in for surveillance and reconnaissance. MD, NTPC has been asked to reach the affected site immediately.
Rescue and Relief Operations by the Centre and State Government are in full swing and 3 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached the spot. More than 200 ITBP personnel are on the spot, and one column and Engineering Task Force (ETF) of Army, with all rescue equipment, have been deployed. Navy divers are being flown in and aircraft/ helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are on standby.
“We are focusing on the second tunnel, that is tunnel number one, we’ve learnt that around 30 people are trapped there. We will be carrying out night operations also. Our teams are already on the job and we hope that we’ll be able to rescue them,” Vivek Pandey, ITBP, PRO, Uttarakhand told ANI.

Bright object in the night sky Tuesday likely a missile launch
The Sun Sentinel reports:
A mysterious light in the sky off Florida’s coast on Tuesday evening lured curious residents to social media to find out what caused it.
The light was caused by a Trident missile test launch from a submarine, according to a meteorologist at the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s news partner WPEC-Ch. 12.
“No that’s not a UFO,” Zach Covey tweeted. “It was a Trident-II SLBM Missile Test from a submarine off the coast of Florida. The missile test had been scheduled for the past few days and we just so happened to catch it tonight.”
SLBM means submarine-launched ballistic missile. Unarmed missiles are launched from submarines in tests."

Covey also included a screen shot of the missile’s path. One commenter said the light was visible as far north as Virginia, and another said they saw it from Magic Kingdom.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - What appeared to some in southwest Virginia as a comet trailing through the night sky, was likely a test of the TRIDENT-II ballistic missile launched from a NAVY submarine off the Florida coast.
The interesting light formation appeared in the southern sky around 6:30 p.m. and was visible up and down the east coast. Here’s what it looked like (below) from Christiansburg, VA as the sun was setting."
With a later sunset time, the missile was even more visible across the southern states where this video was captured in Aventura, Florida.
"In fact, there were even sightings of the missile flying through the sky taken from the Turks and Caicos islands, some 575 miles from Florida."

MIAMI – Witnesses shared videos on Tuesday of what appeared to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile off Florida’s Atlantic coast.
The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s maritime advisory system issued warnings about “hazardous operations” in the Atlantic Ocean and missile operations in the Pacific.
There were witnesses as far north as Christiansburg, Virginia, and as far south as the Turks and Caicos Islands.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, the Trident II long-range submarine-launched nuclear missile has an operational range of about 7,000 miles.
