Hidden boundaries of lost continent 'Zealandia' revealed in incredible detail

The underwater continent broke off from Gondwana 80 million years ago





A new ocean-mapping expedition is drawing the boundaries of Zealandia, a submerged "lost continent" that hosts New Zealand and the territory of New Caledonia in the South Pacific.

Zealandia broke off from the supercontinent Gondwana between 79 million and 83 million years ago. Except for New Zealand and New Caledonia, this fragment of continental crust now sits on the ocean floor. It's not the only bit of continental crust that's detached from a larger continent, but it is the largest at 1.9 million square miles (4.9 million square kilometers). That's six times larger than the next-largest continental fragment, the microcontinent of Madagascar.

Zealandia, also known as Te Riu-a-Māui in Māori, was assigned continental status in 2017. Since then, researchers have been working to map the lost continent — no easy feat, as 94% of it is under water.

High Precision Star Maps Boost Interstellar Navigation System

Navigation for starship commanders just got easier





Imagine you are an ordinary interstellar starship commander. You set off on a trip to a nearby star, accelerating to a significant percentage of the speed of light. You know that after a certain period of time you must slow down. But before you start the maneuver, you check your speed and position. A quick look out of the window should confirm everything.

That’s when the problems begin. The pattern of stars outside is nothing like the one where you started so you can no longer use the familiar constellations to help you orient and navigate. It turns out that navigating is much harder for starship commanders than you imagined.

In the future, however, you and your colleagues will be able to turn to the work of Coryn Bailer-Jones at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany who has developed a way to determine the position and velocity of a spacecraft traveling through our neighborhood. His AI-guided approach can pinpoint position to within about 500 million kilometers, just a few times the distance from the Earth to the Sun.

Archaeologists Have Found Prehistoric Rock Structures Under the Great Lakes

A Doggerland of the Great Lakes? Underwater rock formations on the lakebed of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron may have been created by hunters thousands of years ago.

In 2007, underwater archeologist Mark Holley was scanning for shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. Instead, he stumbled on a line of stones thought to be constructed by ancient humans — including one stone with what appeared to be a carving of a mastodon. The subsequent press conference generated excited headlines about a “Stonehenge-like structure” found under Lake Michigan. 

But these sensationalized headlines are misleading: there’s no “henge” to the structure. The stones are small and arranged in a V-shape instead of a circle. Plus, the supposed-mastodon image hasn’t been analyzed to prove whether it’s a carving or a natural feature of the rock.

The real underwater stone sensation lies 120 feet below neighboring Lake Huron: an area the size of a football field with dozens of 9,000-year-old artifacts and human-built stone structures that comprise the most complex prehistoric hunting structure ever found beneath the Great Lakes.

“It’s a Pompeii-type situation. Everything is totally preserved in cold, clear freshwater. You don’t get that often in archaeology,” says John O’Shea, an anthropology professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, who has led the research on underwater sites in Lake Huron.

These underwater antiquities give us a glimpse of how prehistoric human communities worked together.
