What are the marks of a sick culture?

It is a bad sign when the people of a country stop identifying themselves with the country and start identifying with a group. A racial group. Or a religion. Or a language. Anything, as long as it isn’t the whole population.

A very bad sign. Particularism. It was once considered a Spanish vice but any country can fall sick with it. Dominance of males over females seems to be one of the symptoms.

Before a revolution can take place, the population must lose faith in both the police and the courts.

High taxation is important and so is inflation of the currency and the ratio of the productive to those on the public payroll. But that’s old hat; everybody knows that a country is on the skids when its income and outgo get out of balance and stay that way - even though there are always endless attempts to wish it way by legislation. But I started looking for little signs and what some call silly-season symptoms.

I want to mention one of the obvious symptoms: Violence. Muggings. Sniping. Arson. Bombing. Terrorism of any sort. Riots of course - but I suspect that little incidents of violence, pecking way at people day after day, damage a culture even more than riots that flare up and then die down. Oh, conscription and slavery and arbitrary compulsion of all sorts and imprisonment without bail and without speedy trial - but those things are obvious; all the histories list them.

I think you have missed the most alarming symptom of all. This one I shall tell you. But go back and search for it. Examine it. Sick cultures show a complex of symptoms as you have named… But a dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than a riot.

This symptom is especially serious in that an individual displaying it never thinks of it as a sign of ill health but as proof of his/her strength. Look for it. Study it. It is too late to save this culture - this worldwide culture, not just the freak show here in California. Therefore we must now prepare the monasteries for the coming Dark Age. Electronic records are too fragile; we must again have books, of stable inks and resistant paper.

    The attempt to gain
    Control over oneself is like
    Trying to stuff one’s shadow
    Into a sack.
    Acceptance of one’s nature is
    A relaxation,
    A movement toward peace
    Within peace.
Follow the trail of your blessings
    To their source.
Follow the trail of your sorrows
    To their source and
    You will find that
Both arrive at the same place.

Hope this is an ok place to put this.
'It’s an act of mercy and compassion to step back and acknowledge how much we’ve been through over the last year. Just to be alive as a human being on the planet right now carries with it a certain tone of activation in the nervous system, as open, sensitive human beings contained within personal, collective, and cosmological networks
It’s as if there’s been a continuous drip of a soul-level cortisol, on the one hand, and a collapse into hopeless/helplessness on the other – an alternation between hypervigilance and a numbing or shutting down.
Each of these responses and the bodily felt arousal that accompanies them are valid and layered with coherence. In addition to our verbal narratives, there are the stories of the body (somatic narrative) and also those of the nervous system (autonomic narrative) that weave together worlds of meaning.
Underneath it all, a deep longing to rest and feel safe again in our bodies, to re-tune and enter consciously into the next phase. Something has fallen away that we will never be able to return to, but the exact nature of what’s coming next has yet to be revealed.
This not-knowing where we’re headed can generate a deep, even cosmic sort of restlessness and disorientation, which is common in moments of liminality and transitional space, when we’re in between the way things used to be and the unknown birth that is yet to come.
The (understandable) temptation is to get out of the in-between and to the rebirth as quickly as possible. But if we abandon the reorganization prematurely, we will lose touch with the silver and emerald and gold materials found only within the core of that which is falling apart.
This is a difficult realm to navigate as it requires a stepping outside the psychic status quo. But it is in these moments when a portal opens where we’re asked to turn the light around and to see the water of life, the fountain, the spring, as it emerges from behind the veil.
Stepping into this vision may grind us into dust, but the particles that remain are the ruby substance which forms the scaffolding of a new world.'
    Matt Licata

The sun does not rise, nor set. We spin toward the Sun, enjoy the glory of the light and watch the horizon.
We are always spinning non stop. We wake from darkness of night to lightness of day'

If we believe in the concept of a creator we probably see that there is some kind of order in effect, where we can see consistency over long periods of time,,,eons of time, ages in our concept of time.

There is order that could only be by the mind of the gods.
They must have through eons of time directed, planned and created all the countless billions of life forms that we see on Earth today,

    Helpful note from Bill:
Actually, there may be nothing you can do! The images you posted had some kind of expiration date, and so they disappeared soon after. That means that looking back, we can't even see what they were. Tintin was just asking if you could possibly (a) remember what you posted, and (b) find another source!

Yes, my apologies: I had a momentary outbreak of Klingon there, I think. Bill has better explained it there in English. It probably was a memorable quote but by whom I wonder? I could help hunt it down with you

Gentle suggestion for the future, to anyone viewing, might be to type out what the actual quote is on the thread. Social media linked images can be deleted, moved etc. on a whim by the account holder so it's probably not the best approach linking to those necessarily

Where are they now? Where ever they want to be.

Time has no end. Space has no end.

They are beyond anything we can even conceive of.
Beautiful poetry there East Sun. We think it would be better here and not on the 'Breaking News' thread as it does constitute a great quote
“If a man does not keep pace with [fall into line with] his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” - Thoreau

Fear in the face of the fearsome
is what makes the fearsome fearsome.

Yet faith in the face of the fearsome removes the fear,
and turns the fearsome handsome. I mean, that which is fearsome
can actually be good looking, if we are good
at looking at it in a new way.

    Neale Donald Walsch
