What Glenn Youngkin’s Virginia win means for Democrats

The midterms are still a year away, but this is one ominous sign among several for the party.

“Some of the blame for this loss surely falls with McAuliffe himself. A longtime Democratic operative and fundraiser who rose to chair the DNC due to his close ties to the Clinton family, he had never held elected office before he squeaked into Virginia’s governorship in 2013, defeating a staunchly conservative candidate by 2.6 percentage points.


And while Youngkin used the specter of critical race theory to appeal to the base, his TV ads aimed at swing voters had a broader focus. In those, Youngkin conveyed concern about the state of the economy and the state’s education system more broadly. He falsely claimed McAuliffe planned to raise taxes by over $5,000 per family, and argued that the state’s public schools were increasingly poorly run and unsafe."


What it means

Three factors bode poorly for Democrats in the midterms.

One is Biden’s approval rating. After staying above 50 percent until mid-August, it has trended down ever since, and it’s now at 42.8 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight’s poll average. Basically, it’s been a rough few months for the president, with the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal, the rise of the Delta variant, new worries about the economy, and struggles passing his legislative agenda. He has a year to turn things around, but his current political standing is weak.

Second, there’s Youngkin’s success in separating himself from Trump while keeping Trump’s base engaged. There have been questions about whether Trump’s coalition would stay home with the former president not on the ballot. But they came out for Youngkin — or, if you prefer, against Democrats — as Republicans’ turnout and margins in rural areas improved. Youngkin also made significant gains in the suburbs, suggesting that well-off college-educated voters who turned against the party of Trump in 2020 were now ready to vote for Republicans again.

Finally, there’s history. The main reason to expect a strong Republican performance in next year’s midterms has been the same all year— the president’s party almost always faceplants in midterms. Since World War II, the president’s party lost House of Representatives seats in 17 of 19 midterm elections. Several of those losses were quite large, while the best-case scenario for the president’s party has been single-digit seat gains. Democrats’ congressional majorities are already tiny, so even a small national shift to the GOP would likely lose them the House and Senate.

A poor midterm performance wouldn’t necessarily doom Biden — most incumbent presidents do tend to improve their standing by the time their own reelection rolls around. But it would doom Democrats’ attempts to pass progressive legislation in Congress — potentially for years to come, depending on how many seats they lose. They still have a year to try and turn things around, but it will be a tall order.”

"Facebook announced Tuesday it was shutting down its Face Recognition system and deleting the scans of over one billion people’s faces.

Jerome Pesenti, vice president of artificial intelligence at Facebook, announced the changes in a blog post Tuesday, citing the technology’s possible negative effects as well as regulatory uncertainty as reasons behind the decision.

“There are many concerns about the place of facial recognition technology in society, and regulators are still in the process of providing a clear set of rules governing its use,” Pesenti wrote. “Amid this ongoing uncertainty, we believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate.”

The company will shutter its Face Recognition program, which automatically identifies users’ faces in images posted to social media, over the next few weeks, Pesenti said. The program has been in place since 2010 and was implemented as an easy way for users to “tag” their friends in shared images.

Facebook will delete the facial scans of over one billion people, or nearly one-third of its user base, as part of the changes. The company will no longer automatically recognize people’s faces in Facebook Memories, photos or videos, and it will no longer automatically suggest “tags” based on facial recognition.

“Every new technology brings with it potential for both benefit and concern, and we want to find the right balance. In the case of facial recognition, its long-term role in society needs to be debated in the open, and among those who will be most impacted by it,” Pesenti wrote. “We will continue engaging in that conversation and working with the civil society groups and regulators who are leading this discussion.”

Critics of facial recognition technology have argued it violates citizens’ privacy while enabling governments and private companies to surveil individuals. In Australia, the technology has been employed to keep track of citizens ordered into COVID-19 quarantine."

My first thought was they didn't need facial recognition any more because they had something 'better' and more covert...?

Thought pattern recognition connected up to AI...?..... just one suggestion...

I had instant suspicion when I read your post as well and initially I thought maybe they were going to use some nano technology tracking device put into bodies via the so called 'vaccine'... but not everyone has the jab so it can't be that (yet)...

Perhaps they're just lying and it will be still used but made more sophisticated - and they're trying to create a better image for themselves while actually becoming more intrusive...

Aren't they moving towards the 'Metaverse' thing... perhaps the whole AI format for using Facebook is going to change and facial recognition is now outdated...?

Entries in the diary include the author revealing she believes she was sexually molested as a child and shared “probably not appropriate” showers with her father, some that detail the author’s struggle with drug abuse and the author’s crumbling marriage with multiple affairs, along with entries showing the family’s fears of a potential scandal due to her brother’s new home, and those that show a deep resentment for her father due to his money, control, and emotional manipulation.

While the vast majority of the media ignored the bombshell revelations, perhaps dismissing their verifiability, The New York Times on Friday reported that the FBI had engaged in two raids on addresses as part of an investigation into how Ashley Biden’s diary was obtained.

Despite naming both National File’s reporter Patrick Howley and the legal name of the company that owns National File, the article does not name National File at all, nor does the article discuss anything that was contained within the diary itself.

Similarly, mainstream journalists when tweeting about the New York Times article, also fail to mention National File, or any of the bombshells themselves.

The article claims that the federal investigators are comprised of FBI agents and “federal prosecutors in Manhattan who work on public corruption matters” on behalf of the Southern District of New York. The investigation was seemingly opened by then-Attorney General Bill Barr, after a Biden family representative allegedly reported in October 2020 that the diary, along with “several” of Ashley Biden’s personal items had been stolen in a burglary.

This is contrary to the information provided to National File by a Project Veritas whistleblower, who explained that the diary was left at an address where Joe Biden’s daughter used to stay.

According to the article, the FBI would not comment on the investigation, saying only that agents had “performed law enforcement activity related to an ongoing investigation” at two locations."

Companies with more than 100 employees will have to ensure their workers are vaccinated against COVID-19 by Jan. 4 or get tested weekly for the virus under new rules announced Thursday by the Biden administration that will affect around 80 million workers across the country.

The White House said “more vaccinations are needed to save lives, protect the economy, and accelerate the path out of the pandemic.”

Health workers at facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid also must be fully vaccinated, which the White House said applies nationwide to more than 17 million workers at around 76,000 health care centers, including hospitals and long-term care facilities.The White House said the new rules preempt any state and local laws, weakening Gov. Greg Abbott’s ban on COVID-19 vaccine mandates, employment lawyers said.

Abbott issued an executive order last month banning any entity in Texas, including private businesses, from requiring anyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The new Biden administration rule would void part of the ban, but Abbott's order still would apply to everyone else in the state, including local governments, school districts and smaller businesses.

“Governor Abbott continues hearing from countless Texans who are worried about losing their jobs because of this federal overreach," Abbott spokesperson Renae Eze said in a written statement. "The Biden Administration left Texans in the impossible position of having to choose between providing for their families or being fired for not getting the COVID vaccine because of their religious belief, medical condition, or personal conscience."

However, employment lawyer Karen Vladeck said the federal rules allow for medical and religious exemptions. The statement from the governor's office also hinted at future legal action.

Employers will not be required to pay for or provide tests for workers, which will put more pressure on employees to get vaccinated in order to avoid inconvenient testing requirements.
“It’s onerous for employees,” said Vladeck, who is based in Austin. “You have to pay for your own tests, which are very expensive, or you have to go in-person to get tested, which takes time.”

The state did not have an immediate tally of how many employees in Texas would be affected by the new rules, but independent Texas labor experts said millions of Texas workers will likely be impacted.

The conflicting state and federal orders had created confusion among businesses. Days after Abbott issued his order prohibiting vaccine mandates, companies that entered into contract work with the federal government were also required to have all employees vaccinated under orders from the White House.
The conflicting vaccine mandates put the many Texas businesses that receive federal contracts in a tough position: Comply with federal law and violate Abbott’s ban, or comply with Abbott and turn down business from the federal government.

American Airlines and Southwest Airlines said they would continue requiring employee vaccinations despite Abbott’s new order.

The Texas business community at large also pushed back against legislation stemming from Abbott’s order. The Texas bills intended to block any Texas entity, including hospitals and private businesses, from mandating COVID-19 vaccines for employees, were a priority of Abbott’s in the latest special legislative. But the bills failed to pass after business groups spoke out against the proposals and at least one key Republican lawmaker spoke out against one of the bills, calling it “anti-business.”

While businesses rejected the recent Texas legislation, Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the Texas Association of Business, did not warmly welcome the new rules from Biden.

"TAB remains strong proponents of voluntary vaccination efforts," Hamer said in a written statement. "However, as businesses struggle to find workers, the announcement from the Biden Administration will almost certainly increase that challenge."

Recently elected Republican state Rep. Brian Harrison, former chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the Trump administration, asked Abbott in a letter Thursday to call lawmakers into a special legislative session "immediately" over the new vaccine rules.

"If the federal government can order individual Texans to put needles in their arms against their wishes, we might as well give up any pretense of living in a free society or having a federalist system," Harrison said.

Texas and other states have already sued the Biden administration over the COVID-19 vaccination rules for federal contractors, which went into effect in October."

Iraqi prime minister survives assassination attempt with drones at his home

Mustafa al-Kadhimi and seven of his guards survived an assassination attempt
in the capital’s heavily defended Green Zone, according to Iraqi officials.

The New York Post reports:

"Embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an assassination attempt that saw armed drones descend on his Baghdad home on Sunday morning, according to Iraqi officials.

The attack drastically escalates tensions between al-Kadhimi’s government and Iran-backed Shiite militias, who have refused to accept last month’s parliamentary election results.

Seven of al-Kadhimi’s security guards were injured when two armed drones attacked in the capital’s heavily defended Green Zone, two Iraqi officials told The Associated Press.

“I am fine and among my people. Thank God,” the prime minister tweeted shortly after the attack, calling for national restraint “for the sake of Iraq.

He later appeared on Iraqi television, seated behind a desk in a white shirt, urging Iraqis to remain calm.

“Cowardly rocket and drone attacks don’t build homelands and don’t build a future,” he said."

Seven of al-Kadhimi’s security guards were injured during the
assassination attempt, as two armed drones attacked in the Green Zone.

"The Iraqi government said that a drone loaded with explosives tried to hit the PM’s home. Baghdad residents heard the sound of an explosion followed by heavy gunfire from the Green Zone, where foreign embassies and government offices are located.

U.S. officials have condemned the attack.

“This apparent act of terrorism, which we strongly condemn, was directed at the heart of the Iraqi state,” said State Department spokesperson Ned Price.

“We are in close touch with the Iraqi security forces charged with upholding Iraq’s sovereignty and independence and have offered our assistance as they investigate this attack,” he added.

Al-Kadhimi, 54, had previously held the position of Iraq’s intelligence chief before he ascended to prime minister last May. Militias consider him to be close to the United States as he tries to maintain alliances with both the US and Iran.

No organization immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Supporters of pro-Iran and Shiite militias have been dug in outside of the capital’s Green Zone for nearly a month following the Oct. 10 elections in which they lost two-thirds of their seats. They’ve threatened violence if their demand for a recount is denied.

The elections were praised as fair by the US and the UN Security Council, and claims of voter fraud have been unsubstantiated.

On Friday, demonstrators tried to enter the Green Zone, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which one protester sided with the militias was killed. Dozens of security forces were also injured.

Powerful militia leaders blamed al-Kadhimi for the violence.

“The blood of martyrs is to hold you accountable,” said Qais al-Khazali, leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, at a funeral held for the protester Saturday. “The protesters only had one demand against fraud in elections. Responding like this (with live fire) means you are the first responsible for this fraud.”

Bomb Threats Trigger Evacuations at Columbia, Other Ivy Leagues

NBC New York reported

"Multiple university buildings were evacuated Sunday for reports of bomb threats on a series of Ivy League campuses, including Columbia, Cornell and Brown.

Text message alerts notified students at each of the campuses in the early afternoon hours to the possible threats and instructions to evacuate from a select number of campus buildings.

Columbia University confirmed it received bomb threats around 2:30 p.m. that triggered a campus-wide alert."

"NYPD officers were seen patrolling the campus following the first reports of a possible threat. Police officers swept several buildings before declaring them safe.

Shortly before 5 p.m., school officials said the threats were not deemed credible and evacuated buildings were cleared for reentry.

The threats came two days after a Yale University evacuated a large portion of its campus over bomb threats made through a non-emergency line in New Haven. Police gave the all-clear roughly five hours later, around 7 p.m. Friday."

"Cornell University similarly confirmed reports of bomb threats to the campus on Sunday, tweeting an advisory to avoid central campus while officials investigate the threats.

A student at Cornell tweeted video of students evacuating Uris Library on campus."

"The Brown Daily Herald, the university's student-run paper, also tweeted about students receiving text alerts over a bomb threat.

The university released a statement just before 4:30 p.m. confirming evacuations due to a bomb threat made through a phone call."

As Vice Chair for Supervision, he oversaw the supervision and regulation of financial firms in the Board's jurisdiction. He served simultaneously as Chair of the Financial Stability Board, or FSB, an international body established by the G20 to ensure the resilience of the global financial system. His three-year term as FSB Chair ends on December 2.

In both positions, he played a central role in ensuring the safe operation of both the domestic and international financial systems during the stress of the COVID event.

Prior to his appointment to the Board, Quarles was founder and managing director of the Cynosure Group, a private investment firm. i would NOT buy now, and would consider selling HIGH before prices fall

however, i would defer to our very own ThePythonicCow and others who are experts in financial matters to weigh in on matters much above my simple understanding.

Yup - I'd sell, as I did when I had the chance, at the previous real estate peak, back in 2008.

And I'd expect to get more selling pressure than when prices were on there way up. Fewer buyers, more competition from others selling, make it your goal to sell, not your goal to set some new high water mark for sales in that neighborhood.
