When I was growing up in amerika we were taught that Liberty is God-given and Freedom is government-given.

Liberty is the state of 'being free'...

Further, I subscribe to 'do no harm' with a provision for 'self-defence'.

I think the answer is subtly more than 'intent', but that divides the secular from the faithful, and I don't see how there can be any real secular freedom, outside of elitism and 'I'm all right Jack' (ism).

I suspect my soul knows what ‘Freedom’ is but I think we only have the illusion. We cannot do whatever we want otherwise surely there would be chaos. We don’t want to accept our loss of freedom so we create an illusion and pretend that we are free. We will be truly free (again) when we pop our clogs!
But while we’re here (planet) if we all agreed through our free will, to help and not hurt each other that could lead to something.

I don't think we came to this planet for freedom. I think we came here to escape it in some sense.

If you begin with the premise that we're souls inhibiting a human body, and that soul is eternally free, you might then wonder why we'd forfeit that freedom temporarily to come here.

And that's because God (or whatever one wishes to call God) needs boundaries to experience itself. It's needs relativity. It needs to separate itself into this and that. If it's just one large, never-ending, amorphous field of energy then it can't experience itself.

In short, in needs to restrict itself in order to experience itself. It's an old Jewish idea. And it makes sense to me.

And if we accept that our souls are small bits of God, carrying out this mission, you might then say that this restriction of freedom is productive in some ways. Even necessary.

Here on earth we're restricted in all sorts of ways, and many of those ways are existential and not put upon us by any outside source. I can't fly like a bird, for instance.

But freedom on earth mostly means, to me, freedom of speech. Because freedom of speech is freedom of thought, essentially. That freedom of speech should be limited in very few instances (threats of violence for example). And after that, it means the freedom to assemble, to practice whatever religion one wants to practice(or not practice) , to own property, and to move as one pleases(without invading other's space or territory)

We should strive to be as free as humanly possible. We'll never be perfectly free here on earth, but I don't think we're meant to be.

To be allowed to be what I am. I am not my body, I am consciousness inhabiting this body.

The body which has it's limitations and sufferings due to ailments related to past issues and such.

While I might be imprisoned by my body, I can still be free spiritually and mentally. However, if I am not allowed to do what I want with my consciousness and body then I don't feel very free. Society at large does not allow people to be fully free, we are only free within certain parameters and people accept that to a great degree.

Good people have never needed and never will need laws to tell them what is right or wrong, yet I can understand why society does have to have certain kind of "rules" and structures. Spiritual laws are their own thing, they're always at play. People are "free" in a sense to do anything they want, but if they go harming or affecting others in a negative, harmful way then that too will sooner or later come back at them. It's just how the energy always rebounds back, so experience teaches that way too. So there can be more empathy and compassion by seeing things from another angle. By feeling things from the perspective of other beings who are not so very different from you.

That's very good Mike. If God, the Creator is limitless and all-encompassing then what's the opposite of that? To be limited. To be a human being is to know how it feels to be limited in certain ways and also to know suffering because of that and through our feeling of seeming separation. That's not a punishment, but it's for the sake of an experience. Why do we choose that? That's another topic, but in short we are just all Creator or the universe experiencing itself in human form. That's how consciousness grows and evolves.

To expand a bit more, I may have posted before, but one time I asked my Grandpa why he joined the army to fight in ww1.

He said he thought about for a few days before joining, then realized without freedom you are nothing more than a hamster in cage, running on a wheel.

He did not want to be that hamster.

When I was young, it was part of a song, flag worship, which is what it meant, worship the flag.

Beyond that, I would say it means you are responsible for Trespass, which is most familiar as "breaking the plane" of another's property (land), which is imperative to the principle of Private Property, but is also true if you "break the plane" of their body, and so forth, if you inflict an actual damage or injury, you are liable, not otherwise, but we are surrendered to a false law that presumes guilt because we are Residents (vagrants, status criminals, paupers-at-law), false in the sense it is not a true representation of Christ, it is anti-Christ.

I am not a Christian but I will respect it due to the fact it is this Biblical subject which shaped the original American law, and from there it is easy to trace the steps by which it has been--surrendered by us, but, still exists, so it has been more or less overwritten by statutory law.

Freedom in the human form is not possible. The best that can be expected is that the individual is unfettered by excessive overreach by the society they live in. In that context freedom becomes a living tribute to liberty - the liberty to make choices based on one's own internal vocation and the available resources to make it a reality.

I won't attempt to describe it, but I will say this.

Before this plandemic started I used to think Canada was one of the best places (if not the best) to live in the world.
Freedom formed a big part of that mindset.

All that has changed, just in the span of a couple of years. I fear I will never regain the freedoms I had and could very possibly have to forfeit even more.

Free-dom, the domain of the free. When I was a little fellow I thought a great deal about freedom, I seemed to strain, and buck against constraint of every kind, my mother told me I was a little lightening bolt as an infant, and she related the story of when the welfare nurse came to visit. Back in the late 1950's/60's in England it was customary for the local health authorities to check on newborn babies, and toddlers in the local community to ensure they were being cared for 'properly', being fed, and flourishing - very benevolent!

Anyway, one of these community welfare nurses came to visit when I was just 2 years old, my mother told me that I was incredibly animate, rushing about placing potatoes in drawers, and being very busy! The nurse told my mother that I should be 'restrained'!

I was one of those kids who tended to wander, and get into mischief, that is my nature to this day, I am intensely curious, interested in many, many subjects and I appreciate the latitude, and space in which to execute on my inclinations.
Of course, I did not take to school very well, the rules and disciplined order drove me to distraction, it took me many years to adjust. Meanwhile I educated myself with thousands of books, and plenty of rambling, and adventuring.

Freedom to me involves creating the situation whereby individuals can pursue their interests and projects without being constrained, or directed by overarching authorities, OF COURSE this has to be tempered with the caveat that you 'do no harm', and also respect the freedom of others.
Social freedom must include the absence of interference with the lives of individuals, the provision of opportunities for growth, learning, exploration, experimentation with ideas and projects.

The conditions of freedom should also provide for useful work in exchange for the means to live, and prosper.

I suppose this is the classical British 'liberal' philosophy, we do not favor intrusion by government, or social authorities, we appreciate that 'good order' must be kept, and violence and predatory behavior deterred and prevented from obstructing people to pursue their own version of happiness and the good life.

Freedom is the ultimate goal, objective for human civilization, this is the only decent path; any creed, or ideology that works against this ambition is thoroughly evil.
