'Singing’ Lava Lakes Could Help Predict When Volcanoes Will Blow


The lava lake inside Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano puts out long-period seismic signals rich with information

In 2007, lava began to pool inside one of the craters atop Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, a gentle eruption that would culminate more than a decade later in a spectacular display of spewed ash and massive lava flows. Until that final outburst, the lava lake was a tourist spectacle, a calm surface that hid the churn of magma deeper within the volcano. Now, researchers have found a new way to identify key signs of Kilauea’s eruptive potential—by listening to vibrations from these lava lakes. Eventually, they hope to use these lava “songs” to forecast when a volcano will start and stop erupting.

“It’s great that they found this other method to understand what’s happening at Kilauea,” says Philippe Jousset, a geophysicist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences who was not involved in the study. “[This] may help us understand … the most dramatic changes in the behavior of the volcano.”

Although Kilauea provides an excellent laboratory for eruption prediction, not all volcanoes have lava lakes that produce such clear seismic signals, Jousset says. Still, the new work, with its many years of observations, opens “a new perspective” on the evolution of volcanic eruptions.

Mel Torme told me about a UFO sighting he had in New York in the early 50's. At the time, he was hosting an afternoon music and talk show and regarded the admission on his program of a personal UFO sighting as kind of a 'television first' ...

The incident took place when he went out one evening to walk his dog, and noticed that the dog had stopped and was staring up into the sky. Mel glanced up in the general direction ... and noticed a bright light high above them, bigger than a star and apparently rather distant. He said it suddenly started to move and flew quickly downtown toward the Empire State Building, where it stopped for a moment. Then it made a sharp right turn and flew across the Hudson River and out over New Jersey where he lost sight of it ... "

Mel Torme's son, Tracy, became a prolific science fiction writer who worked on Star Trek, as well as the screen adaptation of Budd Hopkins' UFO-related book, Intruders. Through the father and son, Hopkins got to know drummer and bandleader Buddy Rich, one of the most talented musicians to ever enter a recording studio, and one who was always candid with the press about his multiple sightings and interest in the subject.

Buddy told of a strange personal encounter, later confirmed to me by his wife, during a late night trip from Las Vegas to LA. He said they were driving across the desert with the top down on his convertible, when something going very fast passed soundlessly over his car, only a hundred feet or so above it. In amazement, he stopped to look as it flew away, when another object suddenly zoomed over, and then another, all very low and making no effort to avoid him."
