New York's NBC reports:

35 people arrested, including
17 Democratic members of Congress

"The U.S. Capitol Police on Tuesday said 35 people, including 17 Democratic members of Congress, were arrested during a protest that blocked traffic over the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

NBC News reports among those arrested were Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Carolyn Maloney of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Cori Bush of Missouri, Veronica Escobar of Texas, Jackie Speier and Barbara Lee of California and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. The lawmakers said they were engaging in an act of civil disobedience.

The federal law enforcement agency on Twitter wrote that it would issue its "standard three warnings" before making arrests when demonstrators began blocking traffic on First Street, NE.

Capitol Police said arrests began after warnings were given and some demonstrators refused to leave the street.

"We made a total of 35 arrests for Crowding, Obstructing or Incommoding (DC Code § 22–1307). That arrest number includes 17 Members of Congress," Capitol Police wrote."

but the intention i outlined in starting this thread though is for one or two posts

on a new or recent event we want to give heads up on ...

some simple guidelines most of us have followed before are immensely helpful:

Otherwise it is just a phrase that is basically ~~ meaningless

we are at a point that events are speeding up and

but here is another story that broke a few hours ago, making international news:

Greek Wildfire Rages Near Athens; Homes, Hospital Evacuated

The International Business Times reported today:


"A Greek wildfire fuelled by gale-force winds raged in the mountainous region of Penteli near Athens on Tuesday, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of at least four areas and a hospital.

Heavy clouds of smoke were rising into the sky billowing over Mount Penteli where the fire broke out at 1430 GMT, some 27 km (16 miles) north of central Athens.

Images showed the Parthenon temple on the Acropolis hill covered in red light due to the fire burning in the background. By nightfall, the flames were visible from the island of Evia, about 50 km away, according to witnesses.

Local media reported the fire had burned at least one house but the fire brigade would not confirm the information. There were no reports of injuries, the fire brigade said.

About 420 firefighters assisted by 85 engines were trying to tame the blaze, which was burning on several fronts by late afternoon. More than 24 helicopters and planes earlier dumped water on the flames but had to halt operations at night for safety reasons.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of four areas, Drafi, Anthousa, Dioni and Dasamari. They also advised residents in more areas to prepare to evacuate.

One hospital and the National Observatory of Athens were evacuated as a precaution. Traffic was halted on roads leading to Penteli and police were helping residents find their way out of the fire-stricken areas.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired a teleconference with civil protection authorities on the fire."

Today is a difficult day. We are at the peak of the fire season and the current conditions make it easier for fires to break out and spread,"

~ said Fire Department spokesperson Yiannis Artopios in a statement.

Artopios earlier told state TV ERT that the fire was a "difficult" case and that 28 firefighters from Romania were assisting local firefighters.

"We are fighting it, we are trying to circle the fire," said Artopios.

Winds were forecast to persist until Wednesday afternoon.

More than 200 firefighters and equipment from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Romania, Norway and Finland will be on standby during the hottest months of July and August in Greece.

Last year, wildfires ravaged about 300,000 acres (121,000 hectares) of forest and bushland in different parts of Greece as the country experienced its worst heat wave in 30 years."

Real life ‘Lassie’ leads rescue team to owner
who fell 70 ft. in California forest

The New York Post reports:

"A heroic border collie helped save the life of his owner who plunged 70 feet down a cliff in California’s Tahoe National Forest last week in a real-life scenario resembling the plot of “Lassie.”

The pooch named Saul led a search and rescue team back to his 53-year-old human after the man broke his hip and ribs in the harrowing fall during a hike in a remote section of the forest last Tuesday, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue unit said.

The man was able to reach a spot with cell service to call for help that night. The next day, a search and rescue team of 25 volunteers set out to find him, using his last pinged GPS location, KCRA reported.

“Some searchers thought they heard a voice, but they couldn’t figure out where it was coming from,” Sgt. Dennis Haack told the outlet.

Saul’s 53-year-old human broke his ribs and and hip in a 70 foot fall down a cliff in the national forest.

"Then they spotted Saul running towards them and the little border collie began jumping up and down and spinning around in circles before running in the direction of his owner, Haack said.

The rescue team followed Saul for about 200 yards directly to his injured human, who had taken shelter under a camo tarp.

The rescuers transported the 53-year-old about a half mile to a landing zone where a helicopter airlifted him to a hospital for medical treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.

The office credited Saul for saving the day.

“[T]he true credit goes to the subject’s k9 Border Collie that ran through the forest approximately 200 yards and in true ‘LASSIE’ fashion to flag down two searchers,” the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue unit said in a statement."

WASHINGTON—Former White House strategist Steve Bannon has been found guilty of contempt of Congress by a jury in Washington.

Jurors convicted Bannon, who worked in the Trump administration, on two counts.

Bannon faces up to two years in prison. Sentencing will take place on Oct. 21.

Before Bannon’s trial, the last criminal contempt of Congress case took place in 1983, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The case stemmed from Bannon’s refusal to comply with a subpoena demanding documents and testimony. The subpoena was issued by the House of Representatives panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.

Panel members alleged that Bannon has information that would help their investigation.

Bannon offered to comply once the question of executive privilege, which had been asserted by former President Donald Trump, was resolved.

Bannon was indicted in late 2021, several weeks after the House voted to hold him in contempt.

In closing arguments, prosecutors said the evidence was clear that Bannon failed to comply with a lawful subpoena.

“This case is not complicated but it is important. This is a simple case about a man—that man, Steve Bannon—who didn’t show up. Why didn’t he show up? He didn’t want to provide the January 6 committee with documents, didn’t want to recognize the government’s authority,” Molly Gaston, one of the prosecutors, told the jury. “Why is this important? Government only works if people show up, play by the rules, and are held accountable when they do not.”

Evan Corcoran, a lawyer representing Bannon, said that there’s no evidence Bannon was connected to the breach and that his client was in negotiations to appear before the panel before the contempt vote. He also questioned whether Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the panel, had signed the subpoena.
