"I think the second-wave feminists I've talked to are very worried about the kind of woke, gender-identity movement because it's reducing women to just body parts," says Michael Shermer. "A guy can say, 'Well, if I just get breast implants [and] then I can have a vaginal plastic made out of a piece of my skin, I'm in. I'm a woman, right?' Well, no, because women are not just tits and ass. There's more to it than that, a lot more."

For decades, Shermer has been one of the most popular—and provocative—explicators of science to popular audiences, having authored bestselling books such as Why People Believe Weird Things, Why Darwin Matters, The Moral Arc, and The Mind of the Market. He founded Skeptic magazine in 1992 and hosts a video podcast with leading activists and intellectuals. For nearly 20 years, he authored a widely read column for Scientific American in which he debunked beliefs in UFOs and other paranormal phenomena, explained the rise of the "new atheism," and showed how evolution systematically informs human behavior. Shermer's work is deeply and explicitly rooted in libertarian and Enlightenment ideas about individual responsibility, free market economics, rationality, and the search for something approaching objective truth.

In 2019, Scientific American cut him loose, a move he ascribes to the publication's suffocating embrace of the sort of identity politics and wokeness that he says dominates academic and intellectual circles and, increasingly, the culture at large.

Last fall, Shermer, who holds a Ph.D. in the history of science and teaches a class called Skepticism 101 at Chapman University, started a weekly Substack where he posts podcasts and the columns he would have written for Scientific American. The 67-year-old former competitive cyclist talked with Reason during FreedomFest, an annual gathering in Las Vegas, about what he sees as the fundamental clash between wokeness and scientific inquiry, how hard it is to overcome the cognitive biases we all have, why he thinks trans athletes should be banned from most women's sports, why we have so much trouble acknowledging moral and technological progress, and why he now identifies as a classical liberal rather than a libertarian.

Shermer has sat down with Reason a number of times since 2008, speaking about the future of science, how evolution formed the modern economy, and his "Google theory of peace." He's also spoken to us about the history of modern skepticism, why everyone wants to believe in Heaven, and why self-help gurus aren't the key to happiness.

I recently hosted a summit on anti-woke public policy and, beneath all of the legal and technical details, I realized that there is an opportunity for a significant shift in rhetoric for the political Right. For decades, conservatives made their arguments primarily through a statistical frame, using the language of finance, economics, and performance metrics. Think “running government like a business.” But in recent years, the rise of left-wing racialist ideology—BLM, CRT, DEI—has created an opportunity, even the necessity, for conservatives to make their arguments through a moral frame, speaking to the conflict of values that underlies the division between Left and Right. This linguistic shift is already happening—and paying dividends. At the summit, we discussed two specific examples. First, on education, the activist Corey DeAngelis noted that the school choice movement suddenly started winning when it stopped making statistical arguments about performance metrics and started making moral arguments about parental rights and the content of the curriculum. Second, on the federal budget, Wade Miller of the Center for Renewing America has engaged in a similar strategy, moving the debate from the language of large-firm accounting to the language of moral conflict, arguing that Congress should defund the “woke and weaponized bureaucracy.” Yes, we should improve test scores and balance the budget. But the deeper purpose of government is to secure the rights of the people and to establish a principle of justice. Conservatives must speak to the ends, not simply the means. And, in our advanced managerial society, this will require a new moral language that appeals to the interests and emotions of the common citizen, who wants to be protected from the institutions and ideologies that have arrayed themselves against him. Now this is important news. It serves as a counter strike against this ongoing wave of madness. If it does go viral, the makers of this app will become very wealthy indeed.

But they're going up against some political heavy-weights, and hard corporate hitters. The true target has to be these slippery hedge fund execs that set diversity quotas for companies to follow, and then reward them for doing so with generous donations - this is exactly what happened with Bud Light (Anhauser-Busch).

This practise has to stop! About the only power we the people have to do that, is to get educated about what's really going on, and take action by closing our wallets. Hit their bottom line, such that their profit losses prove [far] greater than any donations they can possibly receive.

Carlson hosts Fox News’ highest-rated primetime show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” and is widely admired among conservatives nationwide for his provocative monologues and hard-hitting reports. His keynote at Heritage’s 50th anniversary gala will be his first to a Heritage audience since receiving the prestigious Salvatori Prize from Heritage in 2018.

This week marks 50 years since Heritage’s founding on Feb. 16, 1973. The conservative policy organization will celebrate this important milestone with a two-day event in April, including a Leadership Summit and evening gala at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Maryland.

The Leadership Summit will conclude with an evening gala featuring Carlson’s keynote speech.

“It turned out to be the greatest job ever, mostly because of the people I worked with,” Carlson said in a 2018 interview. “I was unusually lucky. It was one of those jobs that didn’t sound as prestigious as working at The Washington Post, but I think I learned more than I would have if I’d gone to The Post or The New York Times or anywhere. I really learned a lot.”

Prior to joining Fox News, Carlson co-founded and served as editor-in-chief of The Daily Caller. Carlson is also a former host of MSNBC’s “Tucker” and co-hosted CNN’s “Crossfire.” In addition to his primetime show, Carlson is the host of the Fox Nation series “Tucker Carlson Today” and "Tucker Carlson Originals.”

Heritage’s Leadership Summit will kick off the morning of Thursday, April 21. Mr. Carlson’s last program was Friday April 21st. Fox News Tonight will air live at 8 PM/ET starting this evening as an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.
