In dealing with other people, whether IRL or online, IMO the only valid stance is to disbelieve them - except and unless I judge them to be well motivated, honest and competent. If I am not satisfied in any of these criteria, I will do my best to ignore and avoid them. This is more important now than ever before, since the world is more pervasively evil, and more advanced in evil, than before. Trust must be won. So, anyone who demands that I believe his statements and claims, is permanently deleted from further consideration.

... July 12 - Is the West Preparing to Bail on Ukraine?

    July 12, 2023

A picture is worth a thousand words. NATO has turned their backs on Zelensky. Without NATO's direct military intervention, Ukraine will perish, making Zelensky a dead man walking. The West sacrificed Ukraine and its People in an attempt to weaken Russia. They failed.

It's counterintuitive but Ukraine is actually a war to bankrupt and destroy the West. Remember Vicky Nuland was recorded saying, "**** the EU." Cabalists doing what they do best - DESTROY
    --
Zelensky slams NATO for omitting a timeline for Ukraine to join -- Alliance says Ukraine can join when 'conditions are met.' Zelensky says the statement is 'absurd.'

Snippet from the article: "Members of the U.S. delegation were furious with Zelensky's tweet, according to an official familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive diplomatic considerations."

Little wonder that Z is being snubbed...

Transgender politician fails in Russian election bid 10 Jul, 2023
The would-be candidate has not managed to gather the minimum support to run for governor of Altai Region

    alyoshina_julia

Russia’s first-ever transgender candidate for governor has abandoned the idea after failing to get enough backing to get on the ballot. Yulia Aleshina (born Roman Aleshin), 31 years old, announced on Monday that she would not run for the head of Altai Region.

Aleshina, who belongs to the right-leaning centrist party Civic Initiative, announced the withdrawal of her candidature in the aftermath of Sunday’s party meeting. She revealed she had not managed to rally enough support, as in order to run for governor one must obtain the signatures of at least 502 legislators and village heads.

“Some 19 municipal deputies have expressed unequivocal readiness to put signatures in support of my nomination as a candidate for the governor post,” Aleshina said in a Telegram post.

At the same time, she claimed that “many” others initially supported her as well, yet ultimately withdrew their signatures citing proposed legislation to impose a blanket ban on gender reassignment in Russia. That bill is currently being considered by the State Duma, having passed only the first reading. Aleshina did not provide an exact figure for the number of backers to cancel their support, nor did she identify her 19 sponsors, stating only that it would be “inappropriate in the current situation.”

The local chapter of Civic Initiative has expressed its anger over the failed bid, branding the upcoming elections “undemocratic,” as well as blasting the requirement to gather support from municipal officials. Since her bid flopped, the party will not advance a candidate for the office at all, Aleshina said.

Aleshina has repeatedly blamed her political hardships on increasingly strict LGBTQ legislation in Russia. She briefly led the local chapter of Civic Initiative in October 2022, but stepped down from the post, citing the pending law prohibiting LGBTQ propaganda which was ultimately passed by Russia’s parliament. Simultaneously, she announced the end of her political career altogether, though her statement now appears to have been premature.

Ukraine Lost 26,000 Troops and 3,000 Arms Since Start of Counteroffensive – Shoigu Yesterday

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reported about the situation in special military operation zone.
Shoigu stressed that Kiev failed to achieve its goals in all directions and lost roughly 26 thousands of troops and 3 thousands of military equipment.

"To sum up some results, what did they achieve for this widely promoted and announced, as they called it, strategic counteroffensive. As a result, what have they got approaching the NATO summit? Since June 4, the enemy's losses have amounted to more than 26,000 military and 3,000 units of various weapons," Defense Minister stressed.

Russian army decimated 21 Ukrainian aircraft, 5 helicopters, over 1200 tanks and other armored vehicles, including 17 Leopards.

    Unsuccessfull Counteroffensive Effort

High-precision strikes of the Russian military against the reserves of the Ukrainian military, including Western equipment, significantly reduce the offensive potential of the enemy, the minister concluded. Shoigu stressed that should the US supply Ukraine with cluster munitions, the Russian Armed Forces would use similar arms against Kiev militants.

Sergey Shoigu added that the Russian Armed Forces launched its own counterattack in Krasny Liman direction and advanced 1.5 km.

This from Roseanne Barr (talking to Piers Morgan, who's a ****ing idiot) should be mandatory listening for anyone who's a thinking person in the west.

Some of it goes like: (my paraphrase to show the tone of this)
Roseanne: My family was murdered by Nazis in Ukraine. They were all buried alive.
Morgan: Well, I disagree with your opinion on that.
Go figure. I can't recommend this too highly. Trust me.

There’s a similar picture of Biden from a year or so ago at some type of elitist event. Barry Sotero a/k/a Barack Obama was there. Most everyone was swarming around Sotero and fawning over him. There were also smaller circles of people engaged in conversation.

Biden was, just like Zelenskyy, standing all alone almost off stage (from a production or directing standpoint). No one was paying any attention to him. He was being snubbed yes, but I also got the sense that those present had lost any awareness of Biden’s presence. He was a non person.

It’s clear that the powers-that-be are showing Biden the door and using the mainstream media, among other instruments, to get the message out to everyone that it’s OK to come down on Biden, and now (maybe) Zelenskyy—but with some discretion.

    This is doubly cooperative:

Germany sends troops to Australia for the First Time

...with some 30,000 service members from 12 other nations...

Mais said up to 240 German soldiers, among them 170 paratroopers and 40 marines, will take part in the Talisman Sabre exercise from July 22 to August 4, the largest drills between Australia and the U.S., held bi-annually.

The Germans will train in jungle warfare and landing operations alongside soldiers from countries such as Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, France and Britain.

"We aim to demonstrate that we are reliable and capable partners that contribute to stabilizing the rules-based order in the region", Mais said.

When asked what message the first deployment of German troops to Australia was meant to send to China, he underscored Berlin did not aim to antagonize anybody.

"It generally makes sense to get to know the perspective others have upon the world", said the lieutenant general, adding that the current security challenges were much less clear-cut than before 1990.

"The Cold War was easy, it was a bi-polar world. Today, we can no longer focus on Europe only...we have to position ourselves much more broadly," the army chief underscored.

Mais plans to visit the German troops in Australia and a Rheinmetall plant assembling Boxer armoured transport vehicles for both armies in mid-July, before travelling on to Japan and Singapore.

"Japan is a partner that holds a lot of potential for a deepening of our bilateral military cooperation," he said. As for Talisman Sabre, the German troops already have orders to return to Australia for the next exercise in 2025.

I am not sure what "stabilizing the rules-based order in the region" could possibly be.

Sounds like they are In the Magic Kingdom:

Isn’t it just peachy, living in the Magic Kingdom? I mean, aren’t you thrilled and gratified to be entertained by your government with pleasant and often exciting fantasies, instead of having to be oppressed with ugly and disturbing facts? Isn’t it wonderfully calming to enjoy constant relief of conscience and stress through a dependable stream of jolly, uplifting tales rather than to have your emotional core attacked and threatened by dismal truth?

To provide you with this service your government has adopted Disneyfication as its new operating principle. Sure, it’s always put a heroic polish on whatever noble action it takes—Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, nothing new in that—and it has pampered your ego by affirming your Exceptional status as a people; as a kind of Master Race, really. It has labored for generations to keep you from being exposed to brutal, actual information that could upset you, or disturb your inner Wa. Just going back to Vietnam days you can trace the intensification of this effort to keep you from having to absorb facts that might impair your self-regard.

Having had their trust betrayed by disloyal reporters in that noble pacification, they “embedded” the latest ones under military supervision in Iraq to prevent you from having to see and be hurt by nasty Wikileaks propaganda such as the “Collateral Murder” videos. Why should you be subjected to such unpleasantness?

This salutary conceptual prophylaxis devised by our empathetic governing powers has entailed constant, diligent efforts to ensure that events such as, for example, the mass attitude adjustment required of the villagers of My Lai, the behavioral modification of the headstrong sects of Fallujah, or the even-handed doctrinal discipline administered to miscreants in the Abu Ghraib detention center, are not misrepresented and utilized by evildoers in such a way as to inflict serious pain on your collective psyches.

America’s guarding of its clear, limpid stream of pure information was unimpaired in its therapeutic effect until recently, when a villainous pattern of vicious assaults on their policy of guided veracity intensified, led by dark entities who wish us ill. Sad to relate—though we have been assured for years by high officials that most of these despicable attacks were from the usual nefarious source—Russia and demonic dictator, Putin—it has become clear that we harbor in our very bosom, malevolent traitors eager to erode the protective integument that has kept our consciences untroubled so well for so long. Yes, there are those among us who would strip us of our emotional defenses and expose us to a frightening factual world view.

This odious assault on our protective cognitive shield prompted our government to go Full Disney. The idea is this: Disney magic defeats all unpleasantness by addressing it with a light-hearted, spontaneous insouciance that overcomes all pernicious negative vibes. It is so irrepressibly, effervescently positive that dark, grim facts are powerless against it. In the full knowledge of this our government has begun utilizing that Disney spirit through classic melodies in the battle against dangerous negative thinking.

In this spirit, “Zip-e-de-doodah”, a peppy, invincibly affirmative tune, was chosen as the Anthem of the Biden administration in its amicable nation-building, installing happy, friendly regimes such as those of Guaido and Bolsonaro, who eliminate base envy and rage toward paternal elites. Rest assured that, in Venezuela, Bolivia and Peru, plenty of sunshine is going their way.

The critical importance of always maintaining a cheerful outlook has not been forgotten in regard to the recent disturbances in Ukraine, either, where our government is using the enticing promise of the dulcet melody, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”, to frame its positive policy there. It is said to have become a favorite theme of what remains of the Azov Battalion and Right Sektor, and a real inspiration in their Spring Offensive.

Quite recently there was nearly a civil war in Russia when a certain fat, middle-aged, billionaire mercenary honcho rebelled against his master, Putin. Many feel his daring coup attempt was in response to continual broadcasting by American intelligence agencies of that wonderfully uplifting appeal to hope entitled, “Someday, My Prince Will Come”, in the War Zone. Although the predicted civil war did not result, America was heartened that the threat of it persisted for a full twenty-four hours, enough to shake the throne and threaten the overthrow of the deranged despot.

Elsewhere, our government’s aggressive challenge to the world’s second Hitler clone dictator—Biden called him one, just the other day—the odious Xi of greedy, perfidious China, is now being pursued with vigor to the accompaniment of that glorious, lyrical summons to deep faith, “When You Wish Upon A Star”. We can feel confident that our impressive diplomatic team will have that song on their lips as they labor to replace that monster.

And we haven’t forgotten our chief domestic downer, surely this time to be in convict stripes, that Russian lackey, Trump. Against him our government has deployed the monitory “Never Smile At A Crocodile”, which should keep him from attempting another fraudulent takeover of our sanctified democratic nation.

And though things are perhaps not quite as wonderful as they might be for working Americans, we can rejoice that the super-wealthy have more money than ever, pay almost no taxes, and chump change to Social Security, which just supports slackers and deadbeats, anyway, while buying back each others stocks to drive their profits ever higher. Just so no untoward thoughts arise among Hoi Polloi, our vigilant government plays an endless loop of “A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down” for them, so all is just dandy in this Happiest Kingdom on Earth.

A long (and quite important) piece on Zero Hedge today, referencing a devastating Bloomberg article which is behind a register wall. All this is worth reading.
"War Effort In Shambles As Hawks Turn On Each Other" At NATO Summit

Bloomberg is just out with a devastating behind-the-scenes account of a hot-headed Zelensky at the NATO summit in Vilnius, and the growing Western backlash in the face of his obvious frustration and what's being seen as ingratitude for the steady flow of billions of dollars in arms to Kiev.

Apparently even the mainstream media agrees with our own assessment of the Ukrainian leader having thrown a "tantrum" as he complained about the "weak" and "absurd" NATO stance on Ukraine's membership. The blistering tweet he issued in English while en route to Lithuania exposed cracks in the alliance, as Bloomberg highlights in the opening of its very revealing Wednesday piece:
Volodymyr Zelenskiy was running hot ahead of his sit-down with NATO leaders on Tuesday evening. The Ukrainian president had been angered earlier in the day by what he said was an "absurd" reluctance to give his country a clear timeline on membership.
That outburst in turn riled the partners who have funneled billions of dollars of weaponry and aid into Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion — the US had been given no warning before Zelenskiy unleashed his attack on social media.
    https://twitter.com/TheBabylonBee/st...33277058113536

All day Wednesday, the above (very real) photo of an isolated and defeated-looking Zelensky standing amid NATO heads of state (with backs turned) circulated widely on social media.

And things were even more tense behind the scenes, as Bloomberg writes: "Over dinner in Vilnius, with US President Joe Biden back at his hotel, the other leaders delivered a clear message to Zelenskiy, according to one person who was present. You have to cool down and look at the full package, Zelenskiy was told."

While it's not quite yet a full on 'hero to zero' story... things are certainly sliding in that direction, given it's unprecedented that the Ukrainian president who previously enjoyed rockstar status in Western capitals since the start of the invasion could be told to basically 'cool it'!.

Bloomberg continues in reference to Zelensky: "He had, after all, been given a renewed commitment to eventual membership and new security guarantees from the Group of Seven nations. By the next day, the message appeared to be sinking in." The publication was privy to some key Western leaders' exact words, presenting the rare dressing down as follows [emphasis ZH]:
"Whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude," UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told reporters the following morning. "You’re persuading countries to give up their stock" of weapons and ammunition, he added.
This account of the behind-the-scenes wrangling is based on interviews with more than a dozen diplomats and officials involved in the summit who asked not to be named discussing private conversations. NATO leaders were trying to thread a needle on Ukraine’s membership bid when they arrived in Vilnius: They were seeking language that looked like progress and that Ukraine could sell as progress but fundamentally didn’t leave them any closer to getting dragged into a war with nuclear-armed Russia.

Ultimately the hawks (mainly among the Baltic and Eastern Europe states) have lost at Vilnius. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has admitted "There was a lack of political will." Thus it appears that Zelensky's angry, desperate tweet lashing out at Western partners was a last ditch effort at shaming NATO into conceding to its demands of being immediately fast-tracked to membership.

Bloomberg reveals further, that "Crucially, it was the US and Germany that insisted on dialing back the commitment to Ukraine joining the alliance. Earlier drafts of the communique offered a clearer pathway to Ukraine eventually joining, but Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz were wary of going too far."

"Their teams demanded changes in the final days before the summit, upsetting lots of the other European nations, as well as the Ukrainians." Indeed Biden in a CNN interview at the start of the week confessed the obvious: that Ukraine's admission into NATO with the war still going would automatically unleash war between nuclear-armed powers - a WW3 doomsday scenario. Hence the West is now telling Kiev: just stop.

In Zelensky's next big NATO summit appearance Wednesday following a no doubt awkward evening, things were different as he belatedly "got the message"...
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday struck a more conciliatory tone on the subject of Ukraine joining NATO after he raised criticism this week over his country not being formally invited to join the alliance.
Zelensky said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday that Ukraine has already come a “long way in interoperability” with the organization and praised NATO’s decision to remove the need for procedural step — for Ukraine to have a Membership Action Plan — to join the alliance.
More rare, awkward moments of Zelensky being on the receiving end of chastisement and humiliating sarcasm:

    https://twitter.com/townhallcom/stat...32414621229058

Just the day prior: Below is the much more confident Zelensky brimming with self-righteous rage, attempting to convince NATO leaders to change course on stating firm "conditions" for future possible membership.
    He demanded... Ukraine "deserves respect".
    https://twitter.com/ZelenskyyUa/stat...07674811187200

he New York Times' summation of precisely what fell short in the NATO communique explains: "NATO declared on Tuesday that Ukraine would be invited to join the alliance, but did not say how or when, disappointing its president but reflecting the resolve by President Biden and other leaders not to be drawn directly into Ukraine’s war with Russia."

Indeed it's being widely called more vague--and with greater possible restrictions, or "conditions"--than even what came out of the 2008 Bucharest summit.

Below is the offending part of the official Vilnius Summit Communiqué:

Issued by NATO Heads of State and Government participating in the meeting of the North Atlantic Council in Vilnius 11 July 2023:
    11. We fully support Ukraine’s right to choose its own security arrangements. Ukraine’s future is in NATO. We reaffirm the commitment we made at the 2008 Summit in Bucharest that Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and today we recognise that Ukraine’s path to full Euro-Atlantic integration has moved beyond the need for the Membership Action Plan. Ukraine has become increasingly interoperable and politically integrated with the Alliance, and has made substantial progress on its reform path. In line with the 1997 Charter on a Distinctive Partnership between NATO and Ukraine and the 2009 Complement, Allies will continue to support and review Ukraine’s progress on interoperability as well as additional democratic and security sector reforms that are required. NATO Foreign Ministers will regularly assess progress through the adapted Annual National Programme. The Alliance will support Ukraine in making these reforms on its path towards future membership. We will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance when Allies agree and conditions are met.
But Zelensky is still holding out hope that one day...

    https://twitter.com/CitizenFreePres/...30807816933381

However, President Biden has remained unmoved, and responded by explaining before reporters that Ukraine "will not be in NATO for a while".

    * * *

The geopolitical analysis news site Moon of Alabama observes correctly...

"Well. The little comedian seems disappointed. As if the whole play had not been obvious from the very beginning. Since 2008 the Ukraine was to be used as a tool to nag Russia. It is otherwise of little value. It will end up as a discarded rag while NATO will, in the end, again recognize the Russian Federation as the super power that that it is. NATO will have to relearn to listen to and negotiate with it."

MofA then highlights the inevitable negative impact (to say the least) on Ukrainian morale: "Now lets wait and see what NATO's climb down will do to the morale and motivations of the Ukrainian army and people."

Update: David Sacks agrees that for the hawks of NATO-land, the way things are going for the Ukrainian war effort and the West's prior optimism and muscular support in general have reached a low-point.

    Sacks writes below [emphasis ZH's]...
Despite Biden’s best efforts to put a happy face on it, Vilnius will be remembered as the NATO Summit where tensions boiled over. Zelensky denounced the Alliance’s admission policy as “absurd” and disrespectful.
UK Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace chastised Zelensky for ingratitude. Lindsey Graham attacked the Biden administration for weakness. Ben Hodges criticized Jake Sullivan for lack of “strategic bravery.” Even NAFO mascot Adam Kinzinger no longer appears to be a “fella.”

    Text:
@BorisRozhin (ColonelCassad) Ukrainian War SitRep, as at 21:24 MSK, on July 13, 2023:

    1. The Zaporozhye direction.

The enemy continued attacks in the area of Pyatikhatki and Rabotino, but failed to achieve significant results, once again suffering appreciable losses.

The enemy's inability to ram through the front in these areas reflects an operational failure on the part of the AFU—both villages were supposed to have been taken in the first week of June, according to the enemy's plans of the offensive in the Orekhov direction.

In the Gulyai Pole direction, things are even more fruitless for the AFU. On the Vremevka bulge, the enemy continued to probe our front near the settlements of Urozhaynoye and Makarovka.

The enemy is regrouping in all areas in order to resume attacks, but it is already obvious that the original plans of the operation have had to be redrawn. That is why there are statements about the revision of tactics, and the themes of deep breakthroughs, which NATO and the U.S. bet on all spring and in early June, are being removed from public propaganda.

    2. The Artyomovsk direction.

The enemy continued attempts to advance in the direction of Berkhovka, Kleshcheevka and Kurdyumovka. Since the beginning of enemy attacks on May 10th, the enemy has failed to capture a single village in the Artyomovsk direction.

Nonetheless, Syrsky continues to expend reserves heavily to continue the attacks here, hoping that local successes near Artyomovsk would compensate for the operational failure in the Zaporozhye direction. A possible attempt to break through into Artyomovsk may serve the purpose of media cover for the "Zaporozhye failure."

All the same, even here the AFU have not been successful so far—the Russian troops are holding Berkhovka, as well as the bulge near Dubovo-Vasilievka. In the area of Kleshcheyevka, the Russian Armed Forces hold a key height, the village itself and a number of important positions for its defence. The enemy was unable to break through to Kleshcheyevka from march. In the Kurdyumovka area, our troops are also repelling attacks at the canal and the dam.

    3. The Svatovo direction.

The RF Armed Forces continue to operate quite successfully in the area of Torskoye, Kuzemovka, and Novoselovskoye. The enemy has lost a number of positions and suffered significant losses in recent days, forcing it to move operational reserves here to counterattack and stabilise the front.

Torskoye itself is still partially under the AFU. The Russian Armed Forces control approximately 20% of Novoselovskoye. The situation has also become more difficult for the enemy near Kupyansk. The occupation administration is being evacuated from the city. Our troops are pressing in the area of Sinkovka.

Yes, this is also reported in the mainstream — though at first sight it only seems a small thing, involving 3,000 troops and other personnel. (And of course, it might be just a cosmetic gesture to bolster NATO's plummeting morale after the recent Vilnius conference.)

We'll likely hear some more about this today from Alexander Mercouris, and (if this means anything significant) from Doug Macgregor, Scott Ritter and others.

    https://simplicius76.substack.com/p/...sound-and-fury

SITREP 7/14/23: Popov's Sound and Fury and Vilnius Signifying Nothing

Let’s begin with the most talked about news, which is that the Russian commander of the 58th Army was removed for allegedly questioning his higher-ups, i.e. Shoigu and Gerasimov.

General Ivan Popov was replaced by Lt. General Lyamin, who was his previous deputy in the 58th. A little background: Popov was a relatively young, fast-rising general who only became the commander of the 58th army relatively recently. The 58th is the flagship combined arms army of the Southern Military District, and is not only the storied army group which single handedly trashed Georgia in 2008, but has also recently been the group handling the entire Zaporozhye front, heroically repelling the AFU’s largest offensive of the war. Also, it should be noted that Gerasimov himself once commanded the 58th.

Now, to take you chronologically through what happened, Popov released an audio recording, which we now know was posted to an exclusively private group of his own subordinates and was not meant for wide release. This changes a lot of the calculus as it clearly shifts the perceived tone of what Popov was trying to accomplish. Initially, it would seem he was going ‘rogue’ like Prigozhin, and publicly denouncing the superiors, but in fact that’s not the case.

The person who leaked the audio was none other than State Duma deputy and respected ex-General, Andrey Gurulyov. Russian senator Turchak blamed him thusly:

Turchak said that yesterday's statement of General Popov was distributed in closed chats of the 58th army and its publication on the network is a personal initiative of General Gurulev: "The appeal of General Popov was not public and was posted in closed chats of commanders and fighters of the 58th Army. The fact that" deputy " Gurulev somehow got it and made a political show out of it, let it remain on his conscience. As well as his other statements and comments. And Ivan's conscience is clear. The Motherland can be proud of such commanders. The army was and remains outside politics."

First, let’s play the recording itself:

The AI translation above is a little rough around the edges, so here’s a fuller translation below, to follow along:

Address by Major General Ivan Popov, commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces, to his soldiers.

Good night, my beloved gladiators, loved ones, relatives. [We are a] family. I had to gather my thoughts, a lot of events happened during the last two days.

Now I can confidently say this: I've been removed from my command, suspended from my post. Lieutenant General Lemin has arrived and taken command of the army. Here, I am waiting for my further fate—[my] military [fate], changes, some proposal for further service.

I was honest with you from the very beginning. I've been frank with you. I have shortened distances with all the gladiators from a soldier to a marshal—in our case, Major General Medvedev.

Because we are the same, all of us get to experience fear equally, all of us get to feel pain and hardship equally. I do not make any distinction between us whatsoever. And I have always been honest, as much as possible, from the first day of my arrival in our army.

So honestly I tell you, a difficult situation arose (came about) with the senior leadership, when it was necessary that I either remain silent and small-minded, and say what they wanted to hear, or to call things by their names.

In the name of you, in the name of our fallen friends, I had no right to lie, so I outlined all the problematic issues that exist today in the army: With respect to the combat work and supply [organization]. I called all things by their names and focused attention on the most important tragedy of the modern warfare. This is the deficiency of the counter-battery work and reconnaissance that have led to the deaths and injuries of our brothers from enemy artillery. I also raised a number of other problems and expressed them at the highest level frankly and with the utmost firmness.

With this, apparently, the senior command sensed some danger in me and promptly, in the course of one day, made up an order. They brought the order to the Minister of Defense, and they got rid of me.

As many commanders of regiments and divisions said today, our army could not be broken from the front by the forces of Ukraine, but instead we were hit from the rear by our senior commander, who treacherously and underhandedly decapitated the army in the most difficult and tense moment.

But at the same time I will remain available constantly to all soldiers, sergeants, and warrant officers of the army—to all—absolutely, 24/7, for any problems, domestic family, rear, or combat—any problems whatsoever. We continue to work as a group. I am available to you all the time, and I am honored to stand in the same line with you. I am proud and will do everything in my power even more to make it easier for you to fight and to keep alive as many of our fighting comrades as possible. I will continue to fulfill my combat mission.

The main thing is that in the name of those who will never return from the battlefields, in the name of their memory, in the name of spilled blood of soldiers and officers in Zaporozhye, we are obliged with you to defeat the enemy to repel his offensive and to create conditions for subsequent actions. And thus to honor the memory of our fallen comrades.

Always with you, always in touch,

    Yours, [callsign] Spartak.

Let me first touch on why Gurulyov may have leaked this recording. It seems clear that Gurulyov, being a patriot and ex-military himself, felt that this should be heard and seen by all of Russia. In fact, Gurulyov previously commanded this very same 58th Army a decade ago, and obviously has reason to protect it even against the MOD or other politicians. From the beginning, Gurulyov has been an outspoken maximalist, almost akin to a Zhirinovsky stripe, calling for Russia to go all the way to the Polish border, destroy everything, etc. With that said, he’s never quarreled with the leadership of the country previously, to my knowledge, and is in good standing with everyone, rather than being a 5th/6th columnist type.

As usual, everyone is now jumping to conclusions. Very few are offering a balanced and nuanced approach to analyzing the situation. It’s mostly regurgitating Prigozhin’s talking points about Shoigu/Gerasimov being traitors, or once in a while the polar opposite, with accusations of Popov himself being a treasonous quibbler. Strelkov, for instance, fanned the flames with his usual: that Russia is now “one major military defeat away from a new ‘march on Moscow’ of the actual Russian army”.

First, let’s lay out the facts. About 97% of everything being thrown around is either anecdotal or apocryphal or both. There is precisely one guy on Telegram who made the unsupported claim that “Popov is loved by the troops” and this is instantly taken as gospel and used as proof that “Gerasimov/Shoigu are traitors!” and the heroic patriot Popov has come to save the kingdom.

The fact is, not much is known about Popov, though he appears upstanding and there are some reports of him being well-regarded. But there is also the fact that, according to open source info, he led the 11th Army Corps tasked with defending Balakleya in the Izyum area during last year’s Kharkov Offensive by the AFU. Which would mean he’s the one responsible for what many call a “disastrous retreat” of the Russian forces. I state this not to tarnish his name but simply to keep it balanced and expose the hypocrisy of many propagandists who now crawl from the woodwork to extol this unknown commander when they had previously ridiculed his own actions without even knowing it was him.

But is that to say he’s wrong or lying? No, much or all of what he says could be completely true. Gerasimov and Shoigu may be complete scoundrels for all we know. My point is simply to state that there isn’t enough true data to be jumping to such conclusions and feigning understanding of a likely complex subject.

The fact is, during war time, a soldier must obey his superiors because the superior has a much wider viewpoint, seeing things under his purview that the soldier doesn’t know about and hasn’t considered. The same goes in this situation. Popov’s chief criticism appears to stem from a perceived lack of artillery counter-battery support, and the attendant systems thereof, like presumably counter-battery radar units. Does anyone actually think that Shoigu or Gerasimov are underhandedly withholding such units from the front? If the units were available then they would likely be handed over. But since this is beyond Popov’s purview, he apparently wouldn’t know this.

Shoigu and Gerasimov perhaps had reason to actually withhold things from Prigozhin. After all, he enacted a self-fulfilling prophecy of attempting a coup on the country. They knew this, which is why they previously denied his request to have 200k troops under his command. In retrospect, we can see that this would’ve been disastrous, as Prigozhin was power-hungry and unstable.

But does the MOD have reason to withhold things from the actual Russian army proper? No, of course not—why would they? So what type of dimension do Popov’s complaints take on or represent? Is he speaking from the standpoint of equipment he feels is there but is not being given? Or perhaps from the standpoint that he believes this is more of a systemic training issue within the Russian army, and that proper tactics are not being carried out to suppress the enemy?

If we take the former option, we can say that he’s speaking out of order because the supreme commander is responsible for husbanding the equipment of the entire armed forces, and distributing it effectively to where it’s needed. Sure, the southern Zaporozhye front is important, but there are other fronts as well, and Popov may not understand the distributions taking place nor the total stockpiles of certain types of equipment in the armed forces. With that said, such things can obviously be solved through simple communications and talking; but we don’t know the character of their talks. Did he wildly complain and name-call? We have no way of knowing.

As to the latter possibility: if Popov’s complaint revolves around a systemic issue with the army’s tactics/doctrines themselves, then his complaint seems similarly dubious due to the fact that these are not things you can change in the middle of an offensive. And secondly, he’s the general of the entire 58th army, which means the tactics utilized therein are entirely under his purview. Thus, he would be responsible for adjusting and adapting the tactics to whatever need he feels he has.

But now, let’s cover the opposite perspective. Even if his complaints were invalid to some extent, is it right to boot him in the middle of an ongoing offensive? In general, such a thing is certainly not right, as relieving the general of an entire army group in the middle of ongoing kinetic action is flagrantly nonsensical.

So, what are the two main theories for why this could possibly have happened?

The first is that Shoigu and Gerasimov are merely ‘corrupt/treacherous/whatever’ and are trying to cement some perceived ‘hold on power’ by instantly squashing any and all dissent. Could it be true? Sure, anything is possible. But is there any evidence to such a disposition from Shoigu/Gerasimov? No, only the now disproven words from a raging treasonous oligarchic warlord who had a clear axe to grind. That would be Prigozhin, for those who missed my reference.

The second more ‘intriguing’ theory is that the Popov situation is somehow tied to the ongoing Prigozhin witchhunt. Ever since the Wagner rebellion, there’ve been stirrings of a hunt for other collaborators within the Russian MOD itself. For instance, in the past we know that General Mizintsev was viewed by the MOD as sort of sympathetic toward Wagner, having allegedly snuck them ammo from hidden stores. And he was later removed and given to Wagner, becoming one of their commanders.

Similarly, General Surovikin had a close affinity to the PMC unit and since the rebellion in June, there’s been continued rumor that Surovikin has been either arrested, placed on house arrest, or demoted/transferred in some way. At first, it may have seemed the province of pro-Ukrainian conspiracy theory, and I myself dismissed it as such. However, there is an intriguing new video showing Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Andrey Kartapolov being asked by a journalist, “Where is Surovikin?”

Army General Sergei Surovikin "is now resting and is not yet available," said Andrey Kartapolov, chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee.

Recall that Surovikin has not appeared in public since June 23, when his appeal to the leadership and fighters of the Wagner PMC was published

In connection with his long absence, speculation began to spread that Surovikin was allegedly arrested on suspicion of involvement in the rebellion of Yevgeny Prigozhin or dismissed.

As it says in the above, Surovikin has not been seen now since June 23. That’s a very long “vacation” to be had in the midst of the most dire enemy offensive and highest level of combat intensity since last year. Russian news channel Readovka also allegedly ‘confirmed’ that Surovikin is on vacation in Rostov.

And for those that didn’t have their ear to the ground, about two weeks ago in some kind of leaked call from a friend, Surovikin’s own daughter reportedly claimed that everything was fine and he was ‘working’. Admittedly, though, her voice in the call appears strangely nervous to me.
