Default How To Purify Water with Calcium Hypochlorite

Purchase granular calcium hypochlorite at a pool supply store... cost 3 to 4 dollars. You want the strongest percentage you can find.. it will be labled as pool shock. Make sure it has no other ingredient. I was advised to purchase 78% granules but could only find 68% after going to several shops. I was told they dont make 78% anymore. I was assured that 68% would work.
a one pound bag will purify 10,000 gallons of water. Keep it sealed and dry. It does have an explosive quality but such activity is rare. Store away from heat in a sealed container with general fire precautions. (this is why they don't make the 78% anymore.) Less problems with lower percentages. Other inert ingredients are calcium. Many water purfiication facilities use this material. it is listed safe for consumption when properly diluted. (now, remember MMS2 users swallow capsules of this stuff daily)

First you want to make a Stock Bottle

DO NOT DRINK THIS! Dissolve 1/2 heaping teaspoon granules into a one gallon jug (4 liters) Because I did not have the 78% granules as advised I added 1/8 teaspoon more.
This is a stock bottle used to purifly large amounts of water.

Make this stock solution in small amounts as it willd degrade over time. So make enough for a week or two at a time.

To purifly water add one part of this from your jug to 100 parts water.
So one cup would purify 6.25 gallons. One gallon purifies 100 gallons of water

Let the mixture sit for one hour before drinking

1 gallon stock to 100 gallons water
1/2 gallon stock to 50 gallons water
1/4 gallon to 25 gallons water
2 cups to 12.5 gallons water
1 cup to 6.25 gallons water

Thanks for making this thread. I hope it gets traction. Any one who lives in a major city like LA and does not do this for their families--has a screw loose. In the early 80s, when I use to work ER and take disaster preparedness---water loss is such a major factor. One small bomb on the Hoover Damn almost eliminates water for millions and millions of people south of it. As it is being siphoned off even those with their own wells may need to know how to remedy future problems.

Write the recipe down, an ounce of prevention.......saves pound of pain.

Only thing is to make sure you have water that you can purify.

Would this be an alternative to a reverse osmosis system....? My reason for asking is because I'm renting a property, and the RO systems I've seen are fairly bulky & require a permanent installation. If I had my own home it wouldn't be a problem.

Calcium Hypochlorite will kill bacteria and micro-organisms. It will not deal with heavy metals or other compounds. If your water is dirty with the wrong minerals or pollutants I would say that still you a filter system like a good charcoal system.. Not necessarily a reverse osmosis.. you have to look at what is in your water and find the system that will remove it. For example if If you want to take fluroide out you need an alumina filter as reverse osmosis cant do it. Calcium Hypochlorite could possibly oxidize some of these to an inert form but I have not I have not seen any literature on it... so I would not trust it.

Getting the fluoride out of my water is my biggest concern. Are typical charcoal filters any good for that? I use a Britta filter, and it does fairly well getting the chlorine out (at least the taste, anyway) but I have no way to know if it is removing or neutralizing the fluoride. Any advice is appreciated.

Charcoal filters will not remove fluoride at all.

The appropriate alumina filter or reverse osmosis will remove fluoride (I disagree with Arrowwind on that detail.)

    Thanks Arrowwind, very usefull!
For the people who don't know what to buy, you can also buy it online here:

    http://www.mineral-solutions.net/mms2

    It's 60 capsules for $29,95
you need one capsule to purify 50 liters of water.

Thanks Kruellen, but that is also a very expensive way to purchase it. I spent about $7.50 US and have enough to purify 20,000 gallons of water. I am acutally using this purified water right now as we travel in Mexico. It has no bad taste.... but in a pinch, an mms capsule should do it.

Yes that is true it is expensive.
I did another search and found this site:
    http://www.saveonpoolsupplies.com/sh...&keyword=Y7905

Here you can purify 60.000 gallons for $ 25,-
