Right now we should take our critic's pen to the U. S. State Dept. for getting defeated in Two False Fronts of its own making:

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated on 29 August that the US and its allies "will stand united with Ukraine, for as long as it takes". Some of the contenders for the Republican 2024 presidential nomination fully support this stance - former governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley recently stated: “A win for Russia is a win for China. We have to know that. Ukraine is the first line of defense for us.”

Well, Ms. Haley, there is just one line, which is about twelve miles into the Atlantic Ocean, if you know where that is. Hint: Ukraine is not part of the Atlantic Ocean. Try a globe, or, maybe, a beach ball is probably the most complicated thing you can handle.

It is not possible to negotiate diplomacy with someone like this. Their skull can be re-arranged with a monkey wrench. That would be my suggestion. Otherwise, please quit wasting our oxygen in public. Who is this "us" they talk about? It must be "them", inside the DC beltline.

They, of course, do not want China to "win", because Taiwan is our 50th state, like Hawai'i. As we recall, the Kingdom of Hawai'i is its own country. Never mind. Step on it. Taiwan is just another imaginary blob where you sail a catamaran and win, or, they give you lots of money and piles of manufactured goods, because, well, we don't know. The problem is we left them in the lurch:

As of now, we "don't have enough" for our own needs. What, exactly, are our needs for ammunition?

The last significant threat the country faced was from the United Kingdom over two hundred years ago.

Iran, Russia, China, and India have hardly had an extra-territorial conquest since before that.

NATO, being a treaty, only requires the Senate or Legislature of participating countries to withdraw from it. If they don't, all you get is a grand strategy from appointed officials. Switcheroo!

The things that are still being said to vie for office are a summons from the grave. What kind of knuckle-dragging apes do we worship? This is uncalled for.

So, Ukraine moved forward to a destroyed village. This is in the wake of 44 failed attacks toward Zaporozhie and intercepts of entire sorties of about 35 HIMARS missiles. Whoosh!

Oh, and in terms of de-population. Even at the beginning of the conflict, millions of Ukrainians merely had a home address, and effectively lived and worked in Russia and other countries. Add conflict, and five million voluntarily moved to Russia right away, meaning that over seven million Ukrainians are basically now Russian. The conflict won't actually destroy that many, so, you have a net positive number. The diminishing Ukrainian territory has perhaps slightly over half of the population it may have claimed on paper around 2020.

Its final trained brigades have been ground at a rate exceeding seventy per cent.

Everything just gets worse from here. You can't fix that. Not with a pile of nitwit American slogans.

The fact that Kiev is having problems mobilizing is not new and was even reported in Ukraine weeks ago . So it was foreseeable that the government would have to change the rules if it wanted to keep bringing supplies of cannon fodder to the front lines. Unsurprisingly, on September 3, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that men who were conditionally fit for military service were now also to be drafted. It had already been reported that men over the age of 50 were being forcibly conscripted off the street.

The Ukrainian "People's Storm"

The statement by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense that the tightening of the regulations was justified by the fact that those affected themselves would like to be deployed at the front sounded particularly cynical. If it were the case that Ukrainian men really wanted to go to the front, then there would be no problems with mobilization.

In addition, derogations have been revoked in Ukraine. Previously, students were protected from conscription, but on September 4, all able-bodied males pursuing a second or higher college education were stripped of those protections. This should affect 180,000 men who are now to be sent to the front.

All of these measures, now abolishing exceptions and also forcibly calling up old men and those in poor health, are reminiscent of the desperate measures taken by Hitler's Germany when it founded the Volkssturm in the last months of the war.

On September 4, Poland, which is already trying to cut costs for Ukrainian refugees, began deporting able-bodied Ukrainian men to Ukraine .

Other European countries are likely to follow the Polish example, which is why the Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk, who is now forced to live in exile in Russia , calls on his compatriots living in Europe to flee to Russia as quickly as possible:

“Come to Russia, you will not be extradited from here! Here you will not be forced to fight for Selensky. Russia is the salvation for Ukrainians today because the West betrayed them long ago and will betray them again and again. Russia is taking in millions of Ukrainian citizens, giving them the opportunity to settle down, start a decent life, have a career and do business.”

Above all, Russians burn

All this becomes particularly cynical when you know that primarily residents of the Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Zaporozhye, Kharkov and Nikolayev regions are being drafted, as reported by the Ukrainian hacker group "Beregini". The reason is obvious, since these are the eastern Ukrainian regions where ethnic Russians make up a large minority or even the majority of the population.

The regime in Kiev is thus killing two birds with one stone, because firstly it can reduce the number of the hated “Moskali”, i.e. ethnic Russians in Ukraine, by burning them up in the senseless fight against the Russian armed forces. And secondly, this is intended to further fuel hatred of everything Russian in Ukraine, because of course friends and relatives who have lost a son or friend in the process will blame Russia rather than their own government. At least that should be the calculus in Kiev.

The reports and videos about brutal conscriptions straight from the street also come from areas of Ukraine where the majority are inhabited by Russians. Odessa, which is actually a Russian city, has repeatedly made headlines in this context. There are also reports from Ukraine that the soldiers who have been forcibly conscripted into western Ukraine are being deployed in the rear rather than at the front.

In fact, a covert genocide is taking place, especially since the forced conscripts are often thrown into battle with practically no training or equipment. Ukraine's high losses are also due to the fact that they were driven into the minefields under threat of shooting, especially in the Zaporozhye region. Many surviving Ukrainians told of this cynical form of "mine clearance" in Russian captivity.

A video circulating online appears to show a destroyed Challenger 2 main battle tank which was provided to Ukraine by the UK. It would be the first time that such a tank has ever been lost to enemy fire.

The unverified clip was filmed from a car passing the wreck of a destroyed tank, with its main gun protruding from clouds of black smoke. Its distinctive turret appears to be that of a Challenger 2, which has a thermal vision system housed in this section.

The occupants of the car can be heard cursing with Ukrainian accents. Another destroyed tank, which appears to be a Soviet-designed T-64, can also be seen a little further down the road.

Online sources sharing the video claim that it was filmed near the village of Rabotino in Zaporozhye Region. There have been intense battles in the vicinity of this settlement in recent weeks, as Ukrainian forces pushed forward to capture it.

One of the Ukrainian units involved in the operation was the elite 82nd Air Assault Brigade, which was armed with four Challenger 2 tanks as the UK helped Kiev to gear up for the summer counteroffensive. The vehicle in the footage may have been one of those tanks.

The UK has pledged to deliver 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Kiev, though some Ukrainian officials claim to have been promised double that number. The Russian Defense Ministry has not reported the destruction of any of them, as it has in relation to other Western-made armor such as the Leopard 2 tank or Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.

The only other time that a Challenger 2 has been destroyed in combat during more than two decades of operational history involved a friendly-fire incident during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The Queen’s Royal Lancers tank was misidentified as an enemy vehicle by another Challenger 2 from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment outside Basra. It fired and the single gun round hit the turret, killing two crew members and destroying the vehicle.

Arrest of one-time ally of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy comes as Kyiv attempts to crack down on corruption

A Ukrainian court has ordered tycoon Ihor Kolomoisky to be held in custody for two months on suspicion of fraud and money laundering, a striking move against one of the country’s most powerful businessmen.

The detention on Saturday of Kolomoisky, who is under US sanctions and is a one-time supporter of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, whose election he backed in 2019, comes as Kyiv is trying to signal progress during a wartime crackdown on corruption.

Defence lawyers said Kolomoisky would appeal against the ruling, questioning its legality, but that he would not post bail of almost $14m in order to secure his release, broadcaster Radio Liberty reported.

After a hearing at a district court in Kyiv late on Saturday, Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine’s richest men, was shown being led away in a blue tracksuit jacket in television footage. He could not be reached for comment.

The Security Service of Ukraine announced the case against Kolomoisky on Saturday morning, publishing photographs on Telegram Messenger showing him being served documents by security officers and signing them.

“It was established that during 2013-2020, Ihor Kolomoisky legalised more than half a billion hryvnias [$14m] by withdrawing them abroad and using the infrastructure of banks under [his] control,” the agency said in a statement.

After the ruling, Zelenskiy appeared to allude obliquely to the case in his evening address, thanking law enforcement agencies for showing resolve in bringing long-running cases to justice.

“Without a doubt, there will be no more decades-long ‘business as usual’ for those who plundered Ukraine and put themselves above the law and any rules … The law must work,” the president said.

Kolomoisky is seen as one of the class of oligarchs who amassed huge industrial wealth after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and wielded outsize political and economic influence.

Before Russia’s February 2022 invasion, Zelenskiy and his team passed legislation requiring oligarchs to register and to stay out of politics. The war has eroded the oligarchs’ power as industrial assets have been destroyed in the east and south, and their television channels have been broadcasting under a centralised signal.

Before winning the presidency, Zelenskiy rose to prominence as a comedian and played the role of president on a show aired on a Kolomoisky-owned TV channel. He denies Kolomoisky has had any influence over the government.

During the war, Zelenskiy has emphasised Ukraine’s crackdown on corruption as Kyiv has applied to join the European Union and hopes to secure tens of billions of dollars to help rebuild the country after a war that has no end in sight.

Kolomoisky’s detention is not the first wartime move involving him.

Last November, the state took control of stakes in major strategic companies, some of which were associated with the businessman, invoking wartime laws to help the war effort.

Earlier this year, security officials searched Kolomoisky’s home in connection with a separate investigation into embezzlement and tax evasion at the country’s two largest oil companies, partially owned by him. He has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the investigation.

Kolomoisky is a former owner of leading Ukrainian bank PrivatBank, which was nationalised in late 2016 as part of a clean-up of the banking system. He has owned assets in the energy, banking and other sectors, including an influential TV channel.

The US imposed sanctions on Kolomoisky in 2021 “due to his involvement in significant corruption”. US authorities have also alleged Kolomoisky and a business partner laundered stolen funds through the US. Kolomoisky has denied any wrongdoing.

Ukraine has suffered heavy losses during three months of its summer counteroffensive against Russia but has failed to achieve its goals at any part of the front line, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has reported.

Kiev’s forces have lost more than 66,000 troops and over 7,600 heavy weapons since launching their push in early June, the Russian official estimated on Tuesday.

Despite the “colossal” cost in manpower and equipment, the Ukrainian government continues its operation because it desperately needs to show some kind of success to its Western sponsors, Shoigu also claimed.

The most tense situation remains in Zaporozhye Region, where Kiev deployed brigades from its strategic reserves that had been trained with the help of Western instructors, the minister said.

He provided details about Russian military units involved in repelling Ukrainian attacks in various directions before describing Kiev’s counteroffensive as a failure. In an attempt to obfuscate this reality, “Ukrainian militants are attacking civilian objects and tout those terrorist attacks as military victories,” Shoigu alleged.
The defense minister was speaking at a government meeting with Russian military leaders.

The minister’s last update of this type was in late July and put Ukrainian losses at some 20,800 troops and 2,200 pieces of weaponry.

Kiev does not disclose statistics about its military losses but Ukrainian officials have acknowledged that their counteroffensive was proceeding poorer than had been hoped, and is being waged at a serious cost to the army.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has a dedicated assassination program responsible for taking out Russian “collaborators,” the former head of the agency, Valentin Nalivaichenko, has claimed in an interview with The Economist.

According to the former official, the special SBU division dates back to at least 2015 and was formed from the elite fifth counterintelligence directorate, after Ukraine’s leaders at the time decided that imprisoning people was not enough.

“We reluctantly came to the conclusion that we needed to eliminate people,” Nalivaichenko told the British magazine.

The Economist noted that the unit has been linked to the assassinations of Donbass commanders such as Mikhail Tolstykh, aka ‘Givi’, who was killed in a rocket attack in 2017, Arsen Pavlov, aka ‘Motorola’, who was blown up in an elevator in 2016, and Aleksandr Zakharchenko, the first head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, who was killed in a restaurant bombing in 2018.

The Russian Embassy in Berlin has again warned its citizens against bringing their cars into Germany, citing the instances of confiscation of vehicles with Russian license plates by German agents.

The German authorities previously told local media that the cars were confiscated as part of sanctions imposed on Russia in 2014 and expanded after Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. According to a July report by national broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW), more than 10 cars with Russian license plates were confiscated over the course of just a few weeks.

“We continue to note that German customs authorities are occasionally seizing private vehicles that were registered as property of Russian nationals and temporarily imported into Germany for personal use or transit purposes,” the embassy wrote in a statement on Telegram on Monday. It added that Moscow had repeatedly lodged protests over the measure, but to no avail.

“Until the situation is clarified, Russian nationals are strongly advised against importing vehicles with Russian license plates into Germany,” the embassy wrote.

The German broadcaster told the story of Ivan Koval, a Russian IT manager who relocated with his wife to Hamburg last May and was “shocked” to discover that his car had been seized by German customs agents in accordance with a law that punishes Moscow’s “destabilization” efforts in Ukraine. “I told them that I wasn’t destabilizing anything, that I simply came here with my wife. But, in the end, I still had to give my car away,” the man told DW.

NATO countries first imposed sanctions on Moscow in 2014, when Crimea voted to leave Ukraine and become part of Russia in the wake of the Western-backed in Kiev that year. Moscow has insisted that trade restrictions and the seizure of assets and other Russian property were illegal and tantamount to theft.

Over the course of the years, the Ukrainian regime declared Nazi collaborators in WWII "heroes of Ukraine", naming streets after them and opening monuments to the war criminals. At the same time, numerous paramilitary groups supported by Kiev have been openly brandishing neo-Nazi symbols, while Ukrainian politicians voiced their support for the harshest discrimination against everyone who refused to support such policies.

Another setback for the Ukrainian military as the first Ukrainian Challenger 2 tank has been confirmed destroyed.

Yesterday, we barely had time to recall the "comically powerful" 82nd Airborne Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine before it made headlines again. This unit was part of the tactical group "Marun," which the opponent deployed in late August in a desperate attempt to achieve even localized successes on the Zaporizhzhia front.

The outcome turned out to be predictable. In the first days of battle, the 82nd Brigade suffered significant losses in terms of equipment and mine-clearing assets. Today, a video of the destroyed British Challenger 2 tank, which has taken the place of Ukraine's main "wunderwaffe" after the Leopard fiasco, has circulated widely.

We must revisit a May article in Forbes that stated, "The 71-ton Challenger 2, with its four-person crew and thick composite armor equivalent to nearly two thousand millimeters of steel in the front of the turret, could become the most protected tank in a broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine... These 14 Challenger 2s could be the best weapon Ukraine has for a direct assault on Russian fortifications."

As they say, they could have been, or they might not have been.

In today's Forbes article, a far less optimistic author (yes, the same one who promised victory in May) laments that the crafty Russians "caught the Challenger 2 on the road, far from any cover." The key advantage of the English tank is noted as the fact that "its turret doesn't detach in case of ammunition detonation."

While another piece of Western "wonder weapon" smolders in the fields of Zaporizhzhia, let's give credit to the Russian heroes who have sent yet another enemy tank to the scrap heap. Next in line — Abrams.
