David Cameron harpooning British ships for what?
    (1:04)
Short but succinct comment from on the George Galloway show:
“David Cameron goes around boasting about how good it is to bomb Yemen and how right it is, and yet he's failed to achieve a single objective.”

“The Yemenis still have the blockade in effect. They're still preventing Israeli ships and Israeli linked ships from coming in. And now it risks being enlargened to British ships and American ships as well, commercial ships, that is.”

“So we've shot ourselves in the foot, essentially, and achieved absolutely nothing. And we've done all of this just for the sake of defending Zionism and defending colonial interests.”
Given that we're supposedly running short on ammo, with each cruise missile costing (the taxpayer) an estimated £2m, it's a fool's errand to bomb the backside out of an opposing force who is hunkered down in unreachable tunnels. Perhaps Lord Cameron feels this justifies bringing him into the fray from the safety of the House of Lords

UNRWA reports Israeli tanks target UN shelter; 9 martyred, 75 wounded
An aggression by Israeli forces on a facility in southern Gaza, which housed approximately 800 displaced individuals, resulted in the martyrdom of nine people and left 75 others injured, as reported by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in a statement on Wednesday.

"Update - attack on Khan Younis Training Center this afternoon. Two tank rounds hit building that shelters 800 people. Reports now nine dead and 75 injured. UNRWA and WHO team trying to reach the center agreed upon route with Israeli army, blocked with earth bank," UNRWA Director in Gaza Thomas White said in the statement.

On Tuesday, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) announced that it had surrounded the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini revealed that a separate Israeli aggression on Monday on another UN shelter in Khan Yunis resulted in the martyrdom of six displaced individuals.

Earlier in the day, the Health Ministry reported that the death toll rose to over 25,700 martyred and the number of injured reached 63,740.

Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported that within the span of 24 hours, the IOF committed a total of 24 massacres killing 210 and injuring 386 others.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) further announced that the IOF targeted its headquarters in Khan Younis, specifically its northern gate which, according to our correspondent, is the main portal for requesting ambulances in case of bombing.

This resulted in the martyrdom of 3 displaced Palestinians and the injury of several others, adding that the bombing also targeted the association’s communication centers.

Exclusive: Progress is being made in ceasefire talks, modest however

A senior official in the Palestinian resistance told Al Mayadeen that there is "clear progress in the ceasefire talks [is being made], but this progress is still in its early stages."

The source added that "Israel" informed the mediators that it aims to reach a gradual ceasefire deal with the resistance factions which could eventually result in long-term cessation of hostilities.

He also pointed out that "Hamas insists on a comprehensive and complete agreement for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of the IOF from Gaza," adding that "Hamas insists on urgent humanitarian and medical relief for the humanitarian situation, medical conditions, reconstruction, and the liberation of prisoners."

Ending Gaza war would strengthen Hezbollah against 'Israel': Gallant

In a meeting earlier this week with the heads of local authorities in Israeli settlements in northern occupied Palestine, Israeli Minister of Security Yoav Gallant warned that announcing a date for the return of settlers to the north will play into the hands of Hezbollah, pointing out that it is more advisable to leave that unclear, Israeli media reported.

According to Israeli Channel 11, Gallant cautioned during the meeting against ending the war in Gaza before "completely dismantling Hamas," and believed that it would strengthen Hezbollah against "Israel".

The Israeli Cabinet refrained from specifying a "final date" for a political solution in the north, while informed sources mentioned that Netanyahu and Gallant requested that ambiguity be adopted in this regard.

Channel 11 reported that Confrontation Line Forum Chair Moshe Davidovich asked Netanyahu for answers regarding the situation of the northern settlers but did not receive any.

In a related context, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that nearly 80,000 settlers living near the Lebanese border evacuated the area since the beginning of the war, highlighting that 4 out of 10 who were evacuated will not return.

Explosions reported in Red Sea, no reports of injuries: UKMTO

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Wednesday that it had been notified of an incident off the Yemeni coast in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, with reports of explosions approximately 100 meters off the vessel's starboard but with no reports of injuries or damage.

"UKMTO has received a report of an incident 50 NM South of Al Mukha, Yemen (please note updated position). Master reports an explosion approximately 100 meters from the vessel on its starboard side. The vessel and crew are safe, and no injuries or damage were reported. Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO," the note reads.

Maersk Shipping Company said that two ships flying the US flag sailed away from the Bab al-Mandab Strait today after nearby explosions.

Shortly after the warning was issued, QatarEnergy has notified several European customers about a delay in the delivery of certain LNG shipments.

While the company has not decreased its exports, it plans to reschedule the delivery dates for European shipments.

"QatarEnergy confirms that Qatar’s LNG production continues uninterrupted, and our commitment to ensuring the reliable supply of LNG to our customers remains unwavering while the ongoing developments in the Red Sea area may impact the scheduling of some deliveries as they take alternative routes," the state-owned company said.

Since the start of the war on Gaza, the Yemeni resistance has stated multiple times that it is compelled to seize all Israeli-linked commercial ships or Israeli-owned ships due to the Gaza genocide.

In response to this, the US and its allies have formed a naval coalition under the alias Operation Prosperity Guardian, and have waged multiple aggressions on Yemeni positions along the Yemeni coastline, aiming to force the re-opening of the crucial maritime route.

    Text:
During a UN Security Council meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the US of impeding all efforts to stop the ongoing Israeli war on #Gaza.

Lavrov emphasized that the dire situation in Gaza is exacerbated by a heightened risk of epidemics, especially with its crumbling sewage system and irreparable damage to some of its agricultural land.

Furthermore, he underscored the forcible transfer of Palestinians from Gaza, emphasizing that the international community cannot dismiss the idea of Palestinian sovereignty as it did with the Minsk agreements on Ukraine.

Urging the UN Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, #Russia proposed ministerial-level consultations to restore Palestinian unity and pushed for an international conference on the Middle East settlement process.

Lavrov calls on Palestinian movements to re-unite

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned the crucial necessity to restore unity among Palestinians.

"It seems absolutely necessary to make an effort to rebuild Palestinian unity for all Palestinian factions and all those who are working with them from abroad for them to get together and announce rebuilding of Palestinian unity as an important foundation for a future Palestinian state," Lavrov said after his visit to New York.

Without achieving Palestinian unity, Lavrov said, the mechanisms currently under discussion will lack viability.

Elsewhere in his comments, he said that proposals between the Palestinian resistance and the Israeli regime for a ceasefire only divert attention from the "essence of the problem," which is the actual need to establish an immediate ceasefire.

"This is a trade that is ongoing and it distracts attention from the essence of the problem," the top diplomat said. "The substance needs to be an immediate ceasefire."

In December, Lavrov informed Sputnik that Russia consistently encourages Palestinian movements to unite under the platform of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and cautions them about the risks associated with division.

He identified the lack of unity among Palestinian movements as a severe hindrance to the Arab-Israeli conflict, noting that Moscow is actively engaged in communicating Palestinian representatives "the danger of division for the prospects of Palestinian statehood."

In recent months, reports have indicated that Palestinians perceive Mahmoud Abbas' administration as increasingly aligning with "Israel's" interests.

As a result of this, the popularity of Palestinian Resistance Hamas has reportedly increased, while support for Abbas has declined.

Some officials in Ramallah express concerns that there might be little left to govern once the Israeli aggression in Gaza concludes.

Lavrov slams US for fueling hostilities

In an interview with CBS on Tuesday, Lavrov underscored that the United States needs to cease hostilities and refrain from vetoing UN ceasefire resolutions to address the crisis in the Middle East.

"Stop the fighting. Don't use veto when a resolution is proposed to declare a humanitarian ceasefire. You used vetoes twice. There is no reaction from the Security Council as regards to demand a ceasefire. And of course, don't drag on like your predecessors did for decades on creating the Palestinian state," Lavrov said.

During sessions held at the UN Security Council last year, the US employed its veto power to block the implementation of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza three times.

The first time was on October 18, 2023, with a Brazil-drafted UN Security Council resolution, the second was on December 8, 2023, with a UAE-drafted resolution, and the third was on December 22, 2023, with Russian-drafted resolution.

    Text:
An investigation published by the BBC website yesterday revealed that the UAE has used an Israeli-Hungarian businessman to organize assassinations against its political enemies in Yemen since 2015, while the UAE government denied everything mentioned in the report.

The investigation quoted the second commander of an American military company called “Spear Operations,” Isaac Gilmore, as saying that a former security commander in the Palestinian Fatah organization and a former advisor to the President of the Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed, was the company’s entry point into working in Yemen under an Emirati mandate. The investigation published a photo of the former head of the Palestinian Preventive Security Service, Muhammad Dahlan, with Gilmore and the founder of the Israeli-Hungarian “Spear Operations”, Abraham Golan. The two mercenaries also appeared with other soldiers in front of an Emirati military plane before being transported to Yemen.

Gilmore said in the investigation that his company received money from the UAE in exchange for carrying out assassinations in Yemen that were officially aimed at putting pressure on Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State there, in addition to assassinating lawyers and politicians for political goals, referring to the attempted assassination of a member of the Yemeni parliament and leader of the Islah Party in Aden.

Gilmore explained that Mayo was among ten names obtained by Speer in the first assassination lists, justifying his presence on the list by saying that the Islah Party is affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which is classified as a terrorist group in several countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

The investigation revealed that “Spear” participated in training UAE officers at the UAE army base in Aden, while a Yemeni officer in the investigation indicated that the large number of assassinations made the company the focus of attention in Yemen, so their assignment was changed to train UAE officers, who in turn trained local Yemenis to carry out assassinations, according to To investigate.

The BBC investigation was preceded by another report published in 2018, which also revealed the UAE’s involvement in assassinations in Yemen.

🇲🇾🇾🇪 A statement issued by the Yemeni Armed Forces:

In vindication of the oppressed Palestinian people and in support and solidarity with our brothers in the Gaza Strip, and as a response to the American-British aggression on our country.

A clash occurred today between a number of American destroyers and warships in the Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandab while they were protecting two American commercial ships. The result of the clash was as follows:

-A direct hit on an American vessel.
    - Forcing the two American commercial vessels to withdraw and return.

-Several of our ballistic missiles struck their targets despite warships' attempts to intercept them.

The Yemeni military forces used a number of ballistic missiles during more than two-hour clashes.

Yemeni Armed Forces persist with their military operations: enforcing a blockade on Israeli navigation in the Red and Arabian seas until a ceasefire is achieved in Gaza, and the imposed siege is lifted.

The Yemeni Armed Forces affirm that they will take all necessary military procedure within the legitimate right of defense of our country, our people, and our nation, by targeting all hostile American and British targets in the Red and Arab seas.

Strange solution to the efforts to stop the genocide from all sides here. Let's keep adding more ingredients to the stew and keep it bubbling away - eventually it will boil over making a mess of everything.

Our country is fragmented and divided in many ways, has serious economic problems, and is financially at high risk. The same people lying about Russia, lying about what's happening on the ground in the Middle East, are also lying about the true state of affairs of the American economy...

No one knows what to do other than to escalate, and escalation is where we're headed. And we're not prepared for a regional war, just as we were not prepared to supply Ukraine with the degree of support that it needed to fight a regional war against Russia...

There is no strategy. Everything is impulse-driven, and the impulse in Washington is to attack, and attack, and attack...

The Houthis are on the outer edge, on the fringe, but they will not be alone as this develops. And they are not going to be easily defeated, as we've already seen."

Very important post Ravenlocke - thanks for sharing. Sad the way the other commentator (former senior officer in the IDF) kind of glossed over the lies and rationalized them.

Some of what develops may depend on the judgment of the ICJ, due tomorrow at 1 pm EU time.

Of course, if it's in any way supportive of South Africa's case, Israel and the US (and apparently, Germany) will reject it, but that'll continue to apply diplomatic pressure from all sides. Then almost immediately after that will come the Saudi ceasefire plan, which will be overwhelmingly supported throughout the world and may well be taken to the UN General Assembly.

Israel's response to HAMAS (and other Muslim interests) is NOT genocide. Whereas the public official goal of Hamas (and other Muslims) IS genocide of Israel (and the Jews | Infidels).
How many Jews are in Israel 2023?

    7,106,000 are Jews (73.6% of the total population), 2,037,000 - Arabs (21.1%) and 513,000 Others (5.3%)

More than 24.1% of the world's population is Muslim. Current estimates conclude that the number of Muslims in the world is around 1.8 billion.

WHO is really seeking to commit genocide?

Freudian slips/ Gaffes aside, I suppose it depends on Your definition of genocidal intent wrt Israel; but I would have thought that this intent has been perfectly explicit and publicly acknowledged by several senior political and military speakers.

But I agree that there is genocidal intent on the Palestinian side as well.

In other words, clear and explicit genocidal intent on Both sides - albeit only one side has been actively and effectively implementing this intent over the past several months.

But this is one reason why I do not regard either side of this conflict as being on the side of good.

    "We are leaving Iraq"

The head of the Pentagon confirmed that the US will start negotiations in the coming days to replace the "coalition military presence" in Iraq with "bilateral cooperation".

As early as 2020, the Iraqi authorities demanded that all foreign troops leave the country's territory, immediately.

Megatron: This decision was made because US bases are constantly attacked by Islamic organizations. The US has weak logistics in Iraq and Syria and cannot protect its bases if Islamic organizations decide to escalate. But this is a big blow for the US and will drastically reduce its influence in the region at the expense of Iran, which is becoming more powerful and influential.

🇺🇸🇮🇶 ❗️Even after Iraq advised the US to leave the Country, the US has no plans to leave the oil and strategic location of Iraq.

Sec Austins claim that the US is in Iraq at Iraq's invitation is misleading. That was the past, and Iraq has since revoked the invitation and ordered the US to leave.

The US continues to claim their presence is required to fight ISIS. However, the solution to ISIS is and always has been, remove the US and you remove ISIS.
    _____________

🇮🇶🇲🇾Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on the Start of Working Group Meetings of the U.S.-Iraq Higher Military Commission

The United States and the Government of Iraq will start working group meetings of the U.S.-Iraq Higher Military Commission (HMC) in the coming days, initiating a process the two sides committed to during the U.S.-Iraq Joint Security Cooperation Dialogue (JSCD) in Washington, D.C., on August 7-8, 2023. The commencement of the HMC process reflects the deep U.S. commitment to regional stability and Iraqi sovereignty.

The HMC will enable the transition to an enduring bilateral security partnership between the United States and Iraq, building on the successes of Iraq's Defeat-Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (D-ISIS) campaign in partnership with the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve as part of the Global Coalition to D-ISIS.

The HMC builds upon the inaugural U.S.-Iraq JSCD, held on August 7-8, 2023. During that meeting, the United States and Iraq committed to start the HMC to discuss how the Coalition's mission to defeat ISIS will transition on a timeline that considers three key factors: the threat from ISIS, operational and environmental requirements, and the Iraqi security forces' capability levels.

Expert working groups of military and defense professionals will examine these three factors and advise the HMC on the most effective evolution of the D-ISIS Coalition mission, ensuring that ISIS can never resurge, in consultation with Coalition partners at all stages of the process.

U.S. military personnel are in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government, as part of Operation Inherent Resolve's mission to advise, assist, and enable the Iraqi security forces in their ongoing fight against ISIS. The United States remains committed to a secure, stable, and sovereign Iraq.

The United States and Iraq have enjoyed a deep and productive partnership on security matters in the 10 years since the Iraqi government invited the United States and the Coalition to fight ISIS, including the seven years since the territorial defeat of ISIS in Iraq. The start of the HMC process reflects the evolving U.S.-Iraq bilateral relationship under the Strategic Framework Agreement, and it underscores our commitment to deepen our security cooperation to advance stability within Iraq and the region.

After U.S. Again Bombed Yemen, Houthi Attack DoD Transport Ships

Two days ago I discussed the reported hope the Biden administration has to get China's help in the U.S. conflict with Yemen.

To Hope That China Will Help With Yemen Is Delusional Bull**** - Moon of Alabama, Jan 23, 2024

Chinese ship do not get bothered by Yemini forces. They only targeted ships were related to Israel and, since the U.S. and UK bombed Houthi positions, ships related to those countries are also under attack.

We have now learned why U.S. officials had expressed hope for Chinese help. The Financial Times reports of previous backroom talks with China about the issue.

US urges China to help curb Red Sea attacks by Iran-backed Houthis (archived) - FT - Jan 24, 2024
The US has asked China to urge Tehran to rein in Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea, but has seen little sign of help from Beijing, according to American officials. Officials have repeatedly raised the matter with top Chinese officials in the past three months, asking them to convey a warning to Iran not to inflame tensions in the Middle East after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel and the ensuing war.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and his deputy, Jon Finer, discussed the issue in meetings this month in Washington with Liu Jianchao, head of the Chinese Communist party’s international department, according to US officials. Secretary of state Antony Blinken also raised it, said a state department official.
This is so laughable that it is nearly sad.

Again, Chinese ships do net get bothered by Yemen. That other ships now have to avoid the Red Sea route and take an extra 14 days to sail around Africa gives China's container fleet a business advantage. So why did anyone in the White House even thought about asking China for help?

As Lambert Strether at Naked Capitalism snarked about asking for Chinese help:
Before we go to war with them, or after?
Last night the U.S. Navy tried to escort two U.S. owned and flagged container carriers, the Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait into the Red Sea.

The Yemenis responded by firing three anti ship missiles at them. Two missile were intercepted by a U.S. Navy ship, the USS Gravely, but one exploded near to one of the container carriers:
The U.S. Central Command confirmed details of the incident in a statement posted to “X”. “On Jan. 24 at approximately 2 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen toward the U.S.-flagged, owned, and operated container ship M/V Maersk Detroit, transiting the Gulf of Aden. One missile impacted in the sea. The two other missiles were successfully engaged and shot down by the USS Gravely (DDG 107). There were no reported injuries or damage to the ship,” the statement said.
These were not purely civilian ships involved in the private transport of consumer goods:
The Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake are operated by Maersk Line, Limited (MLL), Maersk’s US-flag subsidiary. Both ships are enrolled in the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Maritime Security Program and Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement (VISA) with the U.S government. Maersk said the vessels are carrying cargo belonging to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of State, USAID, and other U.S. government agencies and “is therefore afforded the protection of the U.S. Navy for passage.”
As a result, Maersk Line, Limited has made the decision to suspend transits in the region in until further notice, a significant development considering MLL’s role in transporting U.S. military and government cargo. MLL is not only the largest owner and operator of US flag vessels trading internationally, but also the largest participant in the VISA/MSP programs.
These ships were most likely carrying munitions for Israel. The U.S. Navy lost the battle as the ships could not pass.

The incident happened twelve hours after the U.S. and UK had bombed Yemeni positions for the 9th time.

    CENTCOM reported of the strike:
On Jan. 24 at approximately 2:30 a.m.(Sanaa time), U.S. Central Command forces conducted strikes against two Houthi anti-ship missiles that were aimed into the Southern Red Sea and were prepared to launch. U.S. forces identified the missiles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined that they presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and the U.S. Navy ships in the region. U.S. forces subsequently struck and destroyed the missiles in self-defense. This action will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy vessels and merchant vessels.
This is, again, clear evidence that bombing the Yemeni Houthi government forces has zero impact on their capabilities and motivation. It, in fact, encourages them to try harder.

The whole U.S. policy of 'helping Israel' by (unsuccessfully) countering the Houthi blockade of Israel related ships was wrong from the very beginning. The unsuccessful blockade run by U.S. DoD transports proves that it has failed.

But the whole operation has increased the cost for transporting goods between the Europe and Asia and endangers ships unrelated to the conflict.

The Houthi announced their blockade for Israel related ships in the Red Sea on December 9 2023. The U.S. announced, on December 21, a coalition to protect Israeli related shipping in the Red Sea. Only after that had happened did the traffic through the Suez channel decrease.

    bigger

Now ask how the populations in Europe (and Asia) will feel about the U.S. operation when price inflation, induced by such U.S. actions, will again hit them where it hurts them most.

"Biden plans to send the Director of CIA to help reach an agreement between Hamas and Israel.

Burns will broker an ambitious agreement to release all hostages and a long cessation of hostilities."

Megatron: Hamas is now pulling the strings and has refused a ceasefire on Israel's terms.

It is already clear that Israel has failed, is losing the war (the war with Hamas, not the genocide against children, which is very different), is suffering huge losses, military and economic, and is on the verge of war with Hezbollah, which is militarily very powerful.

The US recognized this a long time ago and that Israel was moving towards an undesirable situation.

Now Biden is forced to find any solution to the ceasefire. The withdrawal of the US army from Iraq and Syria is likely to be part of this agreement.
