🇷🇴🇪🇺🇺🇸Romania is building Europe's largest NATO base, a $2.5 billion project, an "unsinkable aircraft carrier on the Black Sea." The base was built in the middle of a mountain plateau and will become the center of command and control of troops in South-Eastern Europe. It will be 17% larger than Ramstein.

What is a NATO base? Someone has to own it.

Ramstein is American, like most of Bavaria.

What "troops are in southeastern Europe"?

Sounds like a big waste of money to trick someone into something.

Romanians are some of the greatest people, with some of the worst sellout leadership anyone can ever dread. Perhaps comparable to Lebanon. I would not expect that they realistically live in fear of being overrun by millions of Red Commies. As soon as you make that new project, you turn into a big, tasty target for some very unforgiving weapons.

Really? In 2024, someone thinks "new NATO bases" are the thing to do? Pfft. Well, yeah, for the stock market I guess, but not in reality.

Top US senator tells Ukraine to draft younger soldiers
US Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) has urged the Ukrainian parliament to pass a highly controversial mobilization bill that would lower the minimum conscription age from 27 to 25 to compensate for battlefield losses. At the same time, he advocated a scheme in which the US would provide Ukraine with loans instead of non-repayable aid.

Kiev announced general mobilization in February 2022 shortly after the start of the conflict with Russia, with men between 27 and 60 eligible to be called up, although those over the age of 18 could also volunteer. In December, Ukrainian officials proposed a bill expanding the draft bracket, with reported plans to send as many as 500,000 fresh soldiers to the front line.

On Monday, Graham traveled to Kiev to discuss continued US support for Ukraine with President Vladimir Zelensky. Speaking to reporters, he said that he hoped that those eligible to serve in the Ukrainian military would join the fight. “I can’t believe [the conscription threshold] is at 27,” he added, as quoted by the Washington Post. “You’re in a fight for your life, so you should be serving — not at 25 or 27.”

“We need more people in the line,” he said.

Graham also stressed that Ukrainians need to serve regardless of whether the US sends arms to Kiev or not. “No matter what we do, you’re fighting for you.”

The US has struggled to approve President Joe Biden’s aid request earmarking $60 billion for Ukraine due to Republican opposition demanding that the White House do more to enhance security on the southern border.

Moreover, Graham appeared to endorse the approach of GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump who has advocated providing aid to Kiev in form of loans on “extraordinarily good terms.”

“I was very direct with President Zelensky. You can expect me to always be in your corner, but it’s not unfair for me to ask you and other allies: Pay us back down the road, if you can,” the senator said.

Graham’s call for Kiev to extend the draft bracket comes as Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu last month estimated Ukrainian losses since the start of the conflict at more than 444,000 troops. Meanwhile, Zelensky has claimed that Kiev has suffered only 31,000 dead.

Last year, President Vladimir Putin said that Western countries seemed determined “to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian.” He also noted at the time that while the West could provide Kiev with new arms, Ukraine’s manpower is not limitless.

🇺🇦⚔️🇷🇺The Bodies Are Piling Up Near Kupyansk

Though the ISW has only reported marginal gains in the Kupyansk, a Ukrainian infantryman told journalist Catherin Philip of the Times of London that they have been "losing so many people; there are so many bodies we can't even bring them all back."

This is due in part to Russias massive increase in the use of glide bombs. As Slavyangrad reported earlier today, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Russia increased the amount of glide bombs used last year 16 times in just the first few months of year. “These bombs completely destroy any position,” Zhorin, another soldier from wrote. “All buildings and structures simply turn into a pit after the arrival of just one.”

As these infantryman huddle in basements, afraid to leave for fear of the devastation that might rain down upon them, they rely solely on drones, but they're nowhere near enough. The ability of Russian forces to maintain their positions within EW makes even drones a nearly useless means of defense.

NATO Chief's visit part of effort to pull Armenia out of Russia's orbit

Jens Stoltenberg’s visit to Armenia was timed with a “window of opportunity” for the alliance to try to up-end strategic relations between Russia and Armenia, Stanislav Pritchin told Sputnik.

NATO’s Secretary General wrapped up his tour of the South Caucasus on March 19 with a stop in Armenia, after visiting Azerbaijan and Georgia.

💬 "Trying to pull Armenia out of the orbit of Russian influence and cooperation is a goal in itself [for NATO]," said the associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation. Stoltenberg’s visit to Yerevan was aimed at reinforcing Armenia’s “drift to the West” and timed to coincide with its freezing of CSTO membership, agreed Stanislav Tarasov, political scientist, an expert on the Middle East and Caucasus.

"It seems to close the circle of NATO’s previously-launched operation in the Transcaucases," he said.

Events in the South Caucasus are now greatly influenced by what is unfolding in the Middle East, amid the Palestine-Israel conflict, Tarasov stressed.

"So, on the one hand, it is clear that Russia is gaining the upper hand in the conflict with Ukraine and will further strengthen its position in the post-Soviet space. On the other hand, a ‘tsunami’ is approaching from the southern direction. Thus, NATO is actually drawing the states of the region, on the one hand, into confrontation with Russia, and on the other hand, drawing them into the zone of destabilization of the Greater Middle East. This is precisely the very prospect that shrewd politicians in the Caucasus should avoid at all costs," said the analyst.

Tarasov compared Nikol Pashinyan to Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that Armenia might be the next "geopolitical victim" of Western influence, risking its statehood.

Ok, it's nothing new. It's the Cold War RoAF 57th that was shut down in 2004 after being used by the United States to pound Iraq.

    Then:

Quote On 1 May 2007, the Mihail Kogălniceanu aerodrome was established with the mission to coordinate the aeronautical activities in the area of responsibility, to ensure the Support of the Host Nation for the armed forces in transit, and to represent the interface between the foreign armed forces that carried out activities on the aerodrome and the public authorities represented locally. On 1 June, the Administrative Center-Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport (Military Unit 01837) was established and took responsibility of the location. On 1 January 2014, Mihail Kogălniceanu Aerodrome changed its organizational structure, by assimilating the Mihail Kogălniceanu Administrative Center, subordinated to the General Staff of the Land Forces.

On 10 June 2022, the Ministry of Defence announced the winners of the first stage of the contract for the base upgrades. Three companies and 22 subcontractors will participate in the works. The state secret-level classified project is set to finish in almost 9 years. Construction began in 2024 on the south side of the future base, where a high-capacity electrical network and access roads are being built.

    According to the Army:

Quote The U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, “Task Force Mountain”, commanded by Maj. Gen. Gregory Anderson and the 82nd Airborne Division, “Task Force 82”, commanded by Maj. Gen. Pat Work conducted a transfer of authority ceremony at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania, Dec. 15, 2023.

The ceremony hosted by V Corps Commander Lt. Gen. John Kolasheski, who spoke on the role Anderson’s Division played and how that role will be filled by the 82nd Airborne Division, marked the end of a nine-month rotation for TF Mountain, out of Fort Drum, New York, and the beginning of TF 82 rotation attended by distinguished guests, partners, and NATO allies.

“I want to express sincere gratitude for the incredible service of Maj. Gen. Anderson and the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division over the past nine months, you continue to burnish your incredible mountain legacy,” said Kolasheski. “In turn, I wish to offer my warmest welcome to Pat Work and the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division and good luck as you accept your responsibility in the strategically important part of Europe.”

Paratroopers from TF 82 began arriving at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in late November out of Fort Liberty, N.C. The one-for-one unit replacement does not change current force posture levels. The transition aligns with a U.S. national-level decision to sustain a presence in southeastern Europe supporting our NATO allies and partners.

“[Maj.] Gen. Work and the mighty 82nd Airborne, with their Army’s historic division, is going to move it even further in 2024 with integrated plans, integrated warfighting, more complex combined arms formations, better infrastructure, from which to fight from and overall better capabilities, they’re going to be great teammates,” said Anderson.

It's an ever-bloating sack of garbage that helps Romanians transition from Romanian culture to plasticland.

In southeastern Europe, we support our NATO ally, Turkey, but not that ally of none, Israel, or at least they don't say anything about this.

They did mention "fighting" at least three times. Think the 82nd is up for it? You have been deceived.

It's an American base that might potentially host NATO troops some day, if the nine-year plan is effective at all. Remember, this gives everyone plenty of chances to withdraw from the pseudo-alliance. Remember that your country can exit the military dictatorship at will. Seems to be plenty of free advertising to do so these days.

I bet there are 20-30 rich Romanians who would strongly prefer you do *not* know this basic fact, but, from what I can tell, escape is relatively easy.

This thing is going to age rapidly and die off, like a cicada molting:

    Quote Posted by Ravenlocke (here)

On Monday, Graham traveled to Kiev to discuss continued US support for Ukraine with President Vladimir Zelensky. Speaking to reporters, he said that he hoped that those eligible to serve in the Ukrainian military would join the fight. “I can’t believe [the conscription threshold] is at 27,” he added, as quoted by the Washington Post. “You’re in a fight for your life, so you should be serving — not at 25 or 27.”

"You should be serving"--well, obviously the door for volunteers is open, so, if they should, they would.

What does this mean he is saying? We insist to conscript you against your will.

This is super easy to say, right?

Some day the best Ukrainian future will be to enlist, so you can surrender and rehabilitate in Russia.

Didn't mention that somewhere around 33-35 is usually the upper limit for conscription, which means they are already heavily relying on undesirables.

If it thinks Ukrainians should be legally obliged to the grinder, and Iran is somewhere you just shoot with ICBMs, could it be a Zionist?

I must admit he definitely represents a certain stripe of the American people.

Axiomatically, we cannot be under the same government. It will not work. That would be like France directly sending personnel to Ukraine. Completely retarded. Everything just seems to get stupider by the day. He is like that Israeli propaganda guy, utterly clueless as to how they are seen outside of their captive audience.

Dimi really should do stand up, perhaps at the Bolshoi.

    More vitriolic pirouettes follow
    Medvedev:

“Actually, for the common good, it wouldn't be bad if the restless French sent a couple of regiments to Banderaland. It's quite problematic to hide such a large number of servicemen, thus making the task of their systematic extermination not the most difficult, but a supremely important one.

But oh, what a benefit it would bring! With so many coffins being sent to France from a distant foreign land, it would be impossible to conceal the mass death of professional soldiers. And this time, there won't be any deflecting with references to mercenaries choosing their own fate and exercising their right to life. These unfortunate souls will become full-fledged combatants as part of the intervention contingent. Their destruction will be a top priority and glorious task for our Armed Forces.

But for the roosters in the French leadership, this will be akin to the guillotine. They will be torn apart by enraged relatives and vengeful representatives of the opposition who were led to believe that France isn't at war with Russia. And for other restless fools in Europe, it will serve as a valuable lesson.

Once again, Pushkin's immortal lines will become relevant:

So send them to us, Vitia,
    Your embittered sons:
There's a place for them in the fields of Russia,
Among graves not foreign to them.”
Mind you there is a precedent to all this dimwitted buffoonery. The British National Archives has a copy of the Operation Unthinkable (1945) documents and it may be worthwhile reminding ourselves. The operation was tipped to commence July 1st, 1945 (extracted from Wiki):
"The initial primary goal of the operation was declared as "to impose upon Russia the will of the United States and the British Empire. Even though 'the will' of these two countries may be defined as no more than a square deal for Poland, that does not necessarily limit the military commitment".[3] (The Soviet Union is referred to as Russia throughout the document, a metonym that was common in the West throughout the Cold War.)

The chiefs of staff were concerned that both the enormous size of the Soviet forces deployed in Europe at the end of the war and the perception that Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin was unreliable caused a Soviet threat to exist in Allied-held Western Europe. The USSR had yet to launch its attack on Japanese forces and so one of the assumptions in the report was that the Soviets would instead ally with Japan if the Western Allies commenced hostilities.

The hypothetical date for the start of the Allied invasion of Soviet-held Eastern Europe was scheduled for 1 July 1945, four days before the United Kingdom general elections.[7] The plan assumed a surprise attack by as many as 47 British and American divisions in the area of Dresden, in the middle of Soviet lines.[7] That represented almost half of the approximately 100 divisions available to the British, American and Canadian headquarters at that time.[5]

The plan was considered by the British Chiefs of Staff Committee as militarily unfeasible due to an anticipated 2.5:1 superiority in divisions of Soviet ground forces within Europe and the Middle East by 1 July, when the conflict was projected to occur.[8] Most of the offensive operation would have been performed by American and British forces, as well as Polish forces and as many as 10 divisions of the German Army, remobilised from prisoner-of-war status. Any quick success would be caused by surprise alone. If a quick success could not be obtained before the beginning of winter, the assessment was that the Allies would be committed to a protracted total war. In the report of 22 May 1945, an offensive operation was deemed "hazardous"."
    "Hazardous" - yup, I'd say

    Here they are:

    Yeah init? 'Fool' is generous.
It's been suggested, with good reason I think, that a reason, and perhaps the prevailing one, that sees Macron spewing this rhetoric is that someone of French military importance was killed during the recent Russian targeting of a NATO facility in Ukraine. Apologies I don't immediately recall exactly when that was - a couple weeks back, I think - but that episode had been reported here.
For the sake of some completion here is the France24 piece that covered the attack in Kharkov, actually on January 17th, 2024 - time flies:

“We have no need to fight for this power”: an entire platoon of the Ukrainian Armed Forces surrendered in the DPR

Another case of mass surrender of Ukrainian military personnel was recorded in the zone of a special military operation. This time, near Georgievka in the DPR, 18 nationalists surrendered to the Russian military at once. The commander of the unit that surrendered immediately stated that he and his men refused the exchange.

"We received an order from our commanders to march to Georgievka to reinforce those who remained there. While we were moving towards the village, we were hit by Russian artillery, as a result of which we had four killed and five wounded. When we arrived at the village itself, it turned out that there was no one there to help. I decided to surrender. I got in touch with the Russians, and we all surrendered, my entire platoon "

    – said the commander of the nationalist unit.

He added that he does not consider himself a traitor to his homeland, but is responsible for the lives of his subordinates and does not want them to die because of his wrong decision. In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces officer stated that he and his people do not want to be exchanged for Russian prisoners of war.

"We made a collective decision not to be included in the exchange lists, because nothing good awaits us in Ukraine. We will either be imprisoned or sent back to slaughter. There is no need for us to fight for this power "

    – summed up the Ukrainian Armed Forces officer.

Let us note that all Ukrainian military soldiers and officers who voluntarily surrendered are treated in accordance with the principles of humanity. They are provided with warm clothing and food, and the wounded are provided with medical care.

Scott Ritter: Putin's 'dedicated work' added to reinvigorated Russia

    Oleg Burunov
    Sputnik
    Mon, 18 Mar 2024

Putin started to rise to political prominence during the country's times of trouble in the 1990s, when the very existence of the Russian nation was up in the air, former US Marine Corps Intelligence Officer Scott Ritter told Sputnik.

Speaking to Sputnik, former US Marine Corps Intelligence Officer Scott Ritter looked back at Putin's previous years of presidency in light of the Russian head of state's election victory. According to Ritter, the process of reinvigorating the Russian nation was one of the key achievements by Putin.

The ex-US Marine Corps intelligence officer said:

"One should understand that this process 'didn't happen in a vacuum' and was the byproduct of a quarter century of dedicated work on behalf of Vladimir Putin for Russia and the Russian people."

"The pride that Russians have in their country, the pride he has in being a Russian leader, that Russia is a civilization that must be taken into account by the rest of the world, that a world without Russia is a world that cannot exist. It seems, however, people don't understand where this is coming from."

    Ritter noted:

"You see, the root of all of this passion for Russia comes from the decade of the 1990s, the time when the very existence of the Russian state, of the Russian people, of the Russian nation was being called into question. It came in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was born of the dark times of the failure of perestroika, which saw former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's failed gambit to transition from a communist society into one where Western market capitalism could prevail.

"At the time, criminal oligarchs took over, hijacked the Russian economy on behalf of ostensibly western allies, who weren't true allies, rather people [...] who were seeking to dominate Russia politically and economically. This was the decade that Vladimir Putin grew into political prominence.

"Vladimir Putin was a product of the 1990s. He saw the reality of the 1990s and he understood that Russia could never allow itself to go back to those times. He understood that if Russia didn't break free of the path that it was headed on during the decade of the 90s, there would be no Russia."
