Ukrainian DTEK is losing 80% of its generating capacity; repairs will take 18 months

The head of Ukraine's largest private energy company DTEK said five of its six power plants were damaged or destroyed and 80% of its generating capacity lost after attacks in recent days.

DTEK today provides about a quarter of the country's needs. The company said the raids on March 22 and 29 affected heat and hydro production “in almost all regions” and distribution facilities were destroyed.

The CEO said his company suffered a $300 million loss on equipment alone, with labor costs costing half that.

DTEK has spent $110 million rebuilding 10 neighborhoods hit by Russian attacks last year, two-thirds of which have now been destroyed again. Repairs will take “months, and in some cases, a year and a half.”

From Simplicius The Thinker's Lyceum, received today:
"All the above is demonstrably false and known to be false by the rapporteur in question. The notion that Russia is taking 25,000 to 30,000 casualties a month is ludicrous. Artillery accounts for about 70% of casualties on both sides and by every estimate Russia is firing five or ten times as many shells as Ukraine. Russia has carefully avoided frontal assaults to preserve manpower.

No one disputed the data I presented. And no one believed that Russia is taking 25,000 casualties a month. Facts weren’t the issue: The assembled dignitaries, a representative sampling of the foreign policy establishment’s intellectual and executive leadership, simply couldn’t imagine a world in which America no longer gave the orders. They are accustomed to running things and they will gamble the world away to keep their position."

Jacques Baud and the Russian Way of War

    Published: April 1st, 2024

I wanted to do a relatively brief post mostly devoted to this extraordinary new talk by Jacques Baud with the Duran folks, Mercouris and Christoforou.

If you haven’t seen this yet, watch at least the first half hour, or a little more, which is the most profoundly meaningful stretch. Incidentally, according to his wiki, today just happens to be Mr. Baud’s birthday as well, so happy birthday to him.

Jacques Baud worked in military intelligence, studying the Soviet way of fighting in the Cold War, and recounts his most poignant observations in the differences between how Russia and the West conduct warfare. The reason I found it particularly enjoyable is because it accords so well with my own theories, particularly in articles like this one:

In The Spirit Of Russian 'Total War'
    SIMPLICIUS THE THINKER
    ·
    22 FEBRUARY 2023

And thus feels like a bit of vindication, in that sometimes I’ve felt the lone reed bending in the wind, and it’s often discouraging or at least exhausting to realize that the vast majority of the commentariat simply doesn’t comprehend the clashing philosophies, which inevitably undermines their analyses.

Mr. Baud eloquently corroborates the Russian holistic approach to war, noting that it has not changed much since Soviet times. In his estimations, it is a very methodical and analytical approach, but also one—almost contradictorily—treated and studied as an art form, thus the moniker ‘Operational Art’.

His most paradigm-breaking assessments revolve around how Russia approaches the planning of wars around a strategic and operational framework, whereas the West sort of rudderlessly flounders “in the moment”, and has exhibited little conception of military operations beyond the tactical. Elucidating points include Baud’s explanation of the West’s actions in various African and MidEast theaters as just guys going around shooting guns, with little strategic depth or focus on end goals beyond that.

Of course, he may or may not miss the fact that this is to some extents by design, in the spirit of the famous quips about America’s MidEast wars not being fought to be won, but rather to make money for defense contractors. But whatever the actual originating reason is, it doesn’t dismiss the fact that the West’s strategic and operational sense for the battlefield has likely well atrophied as a result. Whether you’re doing something ‘intentionally’ or not, if you do it long enough, you will degrade your institutional ability to operate otherwise.

The only thing to the contrary I’ll say, in the effort of tempering any wild flights of exaggeration to one extreme or the other, is that things are not as clear cut and uniform as simply: “Russia is the best, West is totally clueless.”

We know there are gradations of each on both sides. There are some Russian generals that make even modern Western generals look like Napoleon, and the war has revealed some incredibly deep corrosion within segments of the Russian Armed Forces. We’ve seen endless blunders and miscalculations from Russian forces at every tier of command, and there are many gaps and blind spots in the Russian approach to war. No one has the one-size-fits-all perfect system—if they did, that country would likely rule the world unchallenged.

But it’s in the cumulative sense of the armed forces as a whole, living, breathing organism, we can say without too much exaggeration that in the current historical frame, Russia appears to much better grasp the most fundamental and important precepts of winning real wars compared to the West. We see this categorically demonstrated, for example, in the Russian vision of warfare consistently winning out and being proven superior over the approach of the West in the SMO.

For instance, the West’s philosophy of concentrating on prestige, precision systems for ‘surgical’ victories has now undoubtedly been trumped by Russia’s revival of the conventional ‘mass production war’.

In the clash of philosophies in armor, Russia’s approach to its tanks has likewise seemingly proven its superiority as Western tanks are now roundly deemed inadequate for modern peer combat. Same goes for many other advanced and expensive weapons systems.

In the clash of organizational philosophies it may be less clear, but the long-celebrated Western approach to NCO-heavy “small unit leadership” has clearly not shown advantage over Russia’s putatively more ‘centralized’ force structure.

Clearest of all, of course, has been the question of strategic and operational approach. I’ve written before how the Western-led Ukrainian forces have not once been able to envelop Russians in a single cauldron. Meanwhile, Russian generals somehow continually manage to entrap the NATO proxy force in cauldrons in virtually every major battle, leading to incalculably disproportionate losses.

So that is all to say that, while the differences aren’t as clear cut as Mr. Baud’s passionate appeal may suggest, it’s safe to say that the general cut of his comparisons is overall quite accurate. And truth be told, it will likely only get more accurate as time progresses. That’s because the Russian forces are learning and only improving their storied knowledge and strategic culture, while in the West the pillars of this knowledge are being torn down on a daily basis, replaced with DEI indoctrination and other distractingly degrading modern contrivances.

And further look at the cast of clowns and freaks that the West continues to appoint to its highest leadership positions. Even in spite of all its weaknesses and intransigent corruptions, there’s no way Russia will have the worst of it when it comes to the West’s precipitous degradation of military culture.

The easily demonstrable veracity of this is being witnessed on a daily basis. Each new day brings some new shocking news: yesterday it was another US Navy vessel catching fire, today it was the 4th Apache chopper crash in just the past 2 months alone; that’s not to even mention the general state of things—Baltimore bridge, anyone?

And so, to cap this little digest, I want to present this exceptional new article making the rounds, which perfectly dovetails with the overarching thrust of Jacques Baud’s thesis:

The author, David P. Goldman, recounts his attendance last weekend of some kind of Bilderberg-esque meeting on Ukraine—with an indirect reference to Chatham House rules—between various former cabinet members, senior military officials, academics, etc.

    (the article continues....)

Kremlin responds to Zelensky's remarks on talks with Russia
    RT
    Sat, 30 Mar 2024

The Ukrainian president has suggested that a return to 1991 borders is no longer a precondition for negotiations.

Ukraine must take into account the fact that its borders have changed drastically since the beginning of its conflict with Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said, commenting on the prospects for peace talks.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky suggested in an interview with CBS News that a return to 1991 borders was no longer a precondition for negotiations with Russia. However, he still insisted that Kiev must regain the territory it lost to Moscow in 2022.

That year, four former Ukrainian territories - Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in a public referendum. They followed the Crimean peninsula, which did the same in 2014 after a Western-backed coup in Kiev.

Following the 2022 referendums, Zelensky banned all talks with the current Russian leadership, focusing instead on a formula for ending the conflict that calls for a complete withdrawal of Moscow's forces from all of the aforementioned territories. While Russia maintains it is open to talks with Kiev, it has dismissed that idea as "detached from reality."

Commenting on Zelensky's remarks, Peskov told RIA Novosti on Saturday that "the geopolitical reality has changed dramatically since the beginning of the special military operation. The borders of both Ukraine and the Russian Federation have changed."

He further noted that Russia has already incorporated the four former Ukrainian regions, emphasizing that this reality "cannot be ignored."

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that the change in Zelensky's stance is due to him being "nervous." "He has an election coming up. Or no election?" she said. The Ukrainian president has previously indicated he has no plans to green light a vote, citing martial law, which has drawn criticism both at home and abroad.

Zelensky's comments followed a statement by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, who said that Kiev might engage with Moscow at some point after a summit in Switzerland later this year, which is widely expected to revolve around Zelensky's peace formula. Russia has said it does not plan to attend the event, even if officially invited.

Russia destroys three Ukrainian warplanes – MoD 31 Mar, 2024

FILE PHOTO. A Su-25 ground attack jet of the Ukrainian air force.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Sunday that it has destroyed three Ukrainian Su-25 close air support warplanes. The military jets were stationed at the Voznesensk airfield in Nikolaev Region, a strategically important area in the south of the country.

The operation was conducted using tactical aircraft, missile forces and troops’ artillery, the ministry said without providing details. It also reported the destruction of a guidance radar array, a combat control vehicle, three S-300 anti-aircraft missile system launchers and two ammunition warehouses. In addition, it damaged a storage facility for unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ukrainian Armed Forces and its military equipment were targeted in 126 areas, according to the briefing.

In October, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Moscow’s forces had received new military systems, which at the time allowed them to shoot down 24 Ukrainian planes in just five days. He did not provide further details.

TASS news agency later reported, citing sources, that Russia had used an S-400 Triumph air defense system, which has a 400km range.

Ukraine’s dwindling jet fleet is believed to consist mainly of Soviet-era Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters, Su-24 frontline bombers, as well as a handful of Su-25 close air support planes.

Several NATO member states have promised to donate their F-16 fighter jets to Kiev and have trained Ukrainian pilots to fly them, but no deliveries have been made yet. Russia has warned the West that fielding the nuclear-capable jets will represent an unacceptable escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

Worthy Use of NASA Budget: Mars Program Technology Found in Ukrainian Drones Yesterday

Russian experts have identified batteries and aluminum alloys used by the US space agency NASA in the Mars program while studying captured Ukrainian drones.

Russian experts have found batteries used by the US space agency in the Mars program while reverse engineering captured Ukrainian drones, Dmitry Kuzyakin, general director of the Center for Development of Integrated Unmanned Solutions, told Sputnik.
The center deals with the full cycle of first-person view (FPV) combat applications, from drone production to training and piloting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

"The first FPV drone we acquired had a battery similar to the one used by the US in NASA's Mars mission. It seems that Ukraine assembled FPV drones with its US 'partners', and these batteries were installed in order to use the drones in winter with severe negative temperatures," Kuzyakin explained.

He also said that these batteries are extremely expensive to use in such makeshift devices.

The developer added that aluminum alloys similar to those used in the US space program were also found in the captured Ukrainian drones. According to Kuzyakin, the special properties of such an alloy are crucial in space, but useless in an ordinary drone.

“It [aluminum alloy] consists of 70% ordinary alloys and 30% various homeopathic additives that provide aluminum stability in a vacuum. Why does an FPV drone need such aluminum?" Kuzyakin wondered.

However, thanks to such a "filling", Russian engineers can obtain "a lot of useful information" and data, Kuzyakin concluded.

Trophy German Marder IFV fully restored by Russian military engineers.

Last week, Russian forces captured their first German-made Marder IFV as a trophy near Avdeyevka. Ukrainian troops panicked during an unsuccessful counterattack and retreated, abandoning the machine, the Russian Defence Ministry reported.

After the first captured German Marder infantry fighting vehicle was evacuated from the contact line in the Avdeyevka region, Russian engineers began to study it and identify its vulnerabilities.

The Infantry Fighting Vehicle has been captured and is ready for action. It has been restored by the Tsentr Group of the Russian Armed Forces engineers.
Last summer, the Russian Defense Ministry displayed Western weapons captured during the special military operation. Visitors to Army-2023 had a chance to see that this "top-notch" equipment is no match for the Russian Armed Forces.

Dear Ernie, as best I understand, Russia is deporting undocumented illegal migrants.

The Russian population has a very good relationship with the Muslims among them. A good example of this is the Chechen community, which is predominantly Sunni Muslim yet is now fiercely loyal to Russia and has provided tens of thousands of the strongest and most fearless fighters in the SMO.

Can you quote whatever you are referring to?

The main statement I have made recently is that "we should learn how to remain relevant in a world that no longer takes our point of view seriously".

In esprit de corps, here is an anniversary we missed:

Quote 210 years since the Russian Army entered Paris. On March 19 (31), 1814, cavalry squadrons led by Russian Emperor Alexander I at the head of the Allied forces solemnly entered the French capital. The fall of the French capital led to the abdication of Emperor Bonaparte and put an end to the long-standing Napoleonic wars.

After only 18 hours of fighting, Paris, the largest city in Europe, hung a white flag.

The attack on Paris began at 6 a.m. on March 30. The surrender was signed at 2 a.m. on March 31 in La Vilette. The number of defenders of the city was estimated up to 45 thousand fighters. The fierce assault broke their will to fight. Alexander I remembered what the French did to Moscow and declared that the troops will not storm the French capital only if the French Army leaves it. The peace treaty approved by the victors did not provide for the payment of reparations.

Paris was the largest city in Europe with the population of 714,600. The allies approached it from the northeast in three main columns totaling up to 100,000 soldiers, including 63,000 Russians. As the troops moved towards the center of Paris, the mood of the locals changed. Parisians, who expected imminent reprisals for Moscow, which was devastated in 1812, saw that the Russian units were behaving with restraint and friendliness.

After Paris was captured, on April 6, Napoleon, who lost his Great Army in Russia, abdicated in Fontainebleau and was exiled to the island of Elba.

On the anniversary of the fall of Napoleonic Paris, Moscow reminded leaders of the modern France of the lessons of history.

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated the French authorities on the 210th anniversary of the entry of the Russian army into Paris after Russia’s victory in the Patriotic War of 1812:

“Happy holidays to the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and the entire Russophobic stratum of the current French authorities! At the time, their predecessors did not appreciate Russia’s peacefulness and paid a heavy price for it. We are for peace and cooperation, but on an equal basis. We highly appreciate our unique experience of interaction with France, but whoever brings the sword will … (fall by the sword).”

“In Russian history, this campaign is designated as the Foreign campaigns of the Russian army, held together with the armies of the allies — Prussia, Austria, Sweden, Great Britain, as a result the states of Europe were liberated from French oppression,” the message reads.

“Russia played a crucial role in keeping France within its borders and took French cities under its protection, preventing looting by Prussian and Austrian troops. By decree of Alexander I, the Russian army, ensured the inviolability of the collections of the Louvre and other French museums, historical monuments,” the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled.

The Russian Foreign Ministry gave the history lesson to Paris in response to the boorish statement of the mayor of Paris that Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be welcome in Paris, while Paris is very supportive of Ukrainians.

I wonder how these drone-planes managed to fly so deep into Russia without being detected.

🇺🇸🇬🇧🇪🇺❗️ Hey Americans, British and Europeans, this is what your taxes are paying for as you struggle to live!
    ___________

🇺🇦🇬🇧Zelensky purchased Highgrove House, formerly owned by King Charles III, for £20 million

Highgrove House has been used by Prince Charles since 1980 as a country residence in which he and Princess Diana raised their children, Prince William and Harry. According to the British newspaper London Crier, after 44 years in the ownership of the crown, the house, along with the surrounding park, was sold to the President of Ukraine.

Grant Harrold, the king's former butler, said that according to his information, the sale deal was completed on February 29, 2024, during the visit of Zelensky's wife to the UK. The transaction amount was 20 million pounds sterling. The sale of Highgrove House was also confirmed by staff involved in maintaining the former royal residence. Most of them were laid off on March 21, 2024.

King Charles III, from the very beginning of the conflict, took a strong pro-Ukrainian position.

Numerous visits of Ukrainian representatives to the UK confirmed the king’s sympathy for Zelensky. Elena Zelenskaya became a particularly frequent guest. According to British media, she formed a very close relationship with Queen Camilla, wife of Charles III.

According to Grant Harrold, the secrecy of Buckingham Palace, especially aggravated in recent months due to the illness of King Charles III and Kate Middleton, suggests that official confirmation of the sale will have to wait several weeks or months. It remains unclear how exactly Zelensky was able to convince the British monarch to sell his residence and with what funds he made the purchase.

Also, on 12 January 2024, the UK government announced additional funding for Ukraine of £2.5 billion for 2024/2025. -Slavyangrad
