Game over? Persian Gulf monarchies refuse to give US access to bases for anti-Iran attacks

Persian Gulf countries have reportedly told the United States not to launch any attacks against Iran from their territory or airspace amid seething regional tensions.

💬Sources including a senior US official told the Middle East Eye that Gulf monarchies have been “working overtime” on the diplomatic track “to shut down avenues that could link them to a US reprisal against Tehran or its proxies from bases inside their kingdoms.”

The countries include regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Kuwait, with their leaderships reportedly “raising questions” on the details of US basing agreements, and taking steps to prevent the use of their Iran-adjacent bases against the Islamic Republic.

“It’s a mess,” a senior US official said, referring to the headache the Biden administration faces as it prepares for a potential Iranian retaliatory strike against its top regional ally Israel following Tel Aviv’s April 1 attack on the Iranian Embassy compound in Damascus, Syria.

The Gulf powers’ increasingly independently foreign policy is a major political setback for Washington, which for many decades after World War II (and especially after the Cold War) was able to rely on the Persian Gulf monarchies for its military operations in the oil-rich region. In recent years, regional powers have begun the pursuit of an increasingly independent foreign policy.

Illegal Israeli settlers resume attacks on Palestinian towns in occupied West Bank


RAMALLAH, Palestine

Illegal Israeli settlers on Saturday resumed their attacks on Palestinian villages and towns in the West Bank, injuring several Palestinians.

“The terrorist gangs of colonialists with the protection of the (Israeli) occupation army are closing the bridge of the village of Deir Dibwan, east of Ramallah,” the Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission said in a brief statement.

It indicated that settlers also stormed the village of Duma east of Nablus in the northern West Bank.

The head of the Duma Village Council, Sulaiman Dawabsha, told Anadolu that “dozens of settlers stormed the village accompanied by the Israeli army.”

“Duma is always a war zone and a military barracks for the occupation army and settlers,” the official said.

"The occupation forces deployed snipers on the roofs of houses shooting everyone who moves and firing tear gas bombs,” he added.

“Houses are being burned, there are direct casualties, and there is no ambulance to transport the injured,” Dawabsha said, adding that “so far there are four casualties while seven houses were burned and the number is increasing, in addition to a large number of cars being burned.”

Army supporting illegal settlers

He stressed that "more than 50 settlers are wandering around the neighborhoods of the village, and the army is supporting them."

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said in a statement that “the (Israeli) occupation forces and settlers prevent ambulances from entering the town of Duma to reach the wounded.”

Meanwhile, the Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported that: “Six citizens were injured by live bullets in an attack launched by colonists on the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah.”

One Palestinian sustained a serious injury to the head, it added.

“Colonists also opened fire on the funeral of the martyr Jihad Afif Abu Alia, 25, who was killed yesterday (Friday) in an attack by colonists on the village,” it said, adding that no casualties were reported.

“Other colonists attacked citizens' vehicles near the Ein Siniya roundabout north of Ramallah, causing damage to property,” Wafa added.

In a separate incident, at least six Palestinians were injured in overnight illegal settlers attacks on the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

News agency Wafa reported Saturday that “the settlers attacked the village from the east, riding vehicles bearing Palestinian license plates after the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the area.”

“They assaulted several youths, injuring five of them, one in the head,” it said.

Property damaged

It also reported that “settlers fired bullets towards the citizens and their homes.”

“On Friday evening, a Palestinian citizen was injured in an attack by settlers on the village, during which at least 12 vehicles, 4 agricultural greenhouses, and 5 motorcycles were burned,” it added.

Dozens of settlers also closed the western entrance of Silwad and attacked vehicles belonging to Palestinian citizens with stones, with no injuries reported, according to Wafa.

“Simultaneously, settlers closed the entrance of Turmus-Aya town and attacked passing vehicles,” it added.

Moreover, they also attacked Palestinian towns in the cities of Qalqilya, Jenin and Hebron, according to Wafa.

The attacks came a day after illegal settlers Friday morning raided the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of the city of Ramallah in central West Bank.

The attack resulted in the killing of a young man and injuries to dozens of Palestinians, and the burning of more than 40 homes.

Tensions have been high across the occupied territory amid ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, which left nearly 33,700 people dead since a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.

At least 463 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli army fire in the West Bank since then, according to the Health Ministry.

Doctor Ghassan Abu Sitta who was prevented by Germany from entering Friday to address a pro-Palestine conference in Berlin said German officials try to hide evidence and silence witnesses to the crimes in the Gaza Strip.

The British-Palestinian surgeon who is also the newly-appointed Rector of Glasgow University told Anadolu about what happened when he was held up by federal police at a Berlin airport and why he was banned from entry.

Abu Sitta said he landed in Germany to attend a Palestine Congress event to give evidence about what he saw in Gaza.

Until his return to the UK in November, Abu Sitta helped wounded Palestinians for weeks in Gaza, including at the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital and the Al-Shifa Medical Complex.

"When I arrived at Berlin airport, I was stopped. I was taken down for questioning for three and a half hours. I was then told that I would not be allowed to enter German soil for the remainder of April," he said.

The war surgeon noted that he was also told not to try to deliver a speech via video from outside Germany or send a recorded video address to the conference.

"They asked me who I was, what I had done in Gaza. And they asked me whether I had received an invitation and whether there were planned marches or it was just going to be a speech," said Abu Sitta.

“The reason they gave is really a ludicrous reason. They said that they cannot ensure the safety of people attending the conference, and that's why they're canceling the conference.”

However, for Abu Sitta, the reason is quite different than what he was told. He said, "The reason behind this is they want to silence Palestinian voices."

"The reason behind this is that what Nicaragua is saying in the International Court of Justice -- that Germany is an accomplice to the genocidal crimes of Israel is true."

Germany is also facing legal charges from Nicaragua at the top UN court that it is "facilitating the commission of genocide" against Palestinians with its military and political support for Israel.

"This is what accomplices do in a crime. They try to hide the evidence and they try to silence the witnesses and that's what Germany is trying to do," added Abu Sitta.

Asked whether the UK Embassy in Berlin or UK Foreign Secretary have contacted him after he was denied entry, he said, he was contacted through his lawyer by a member of parliament representing his constituency.

"We will be taking it up both legally and diplomatically with the German government," added Abu Sitta.

Berlin police broke up the Palestine Congress in Berlin, less than two hours after the event began Friday.

Dozens of police officers stormed the meeting, cutting off the livestream transmission and electricity in the hall.

A police official ordered the 250 participants to leave the hall, spurring strong shouts of protest by the crowd.

US president to return Washington amid tension in Middle East

WASHINGTON

US President Joe Biden will return to Washington on Saturday afternoon to consult with his team amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

"The President is returning to the White House this afternoon to consult with his national security team about events in the Middle East," the White House said.

Biden cut short his weekend trip to Delaware, it added.

Israel is on high alert amid Iran's public vow to attack Israeli targets in retaliation for the April 1 airstrike on its diplomatic facility in the Syrian capital Damascus. The strike killed at least seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two top generals.

Iran has accused Israel of carrying out the attack and vowed to respond. Tel Aviv has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, but it has for months carried out a number of strikes against Iranian targets across Syria.

Both Iran and Hezbollah, its main ally in Lebanon, have said that the attack will not go unpunished.

"Don't," US President Joe Biden on Friday said is his message to Tehran.

"We are devoted to the defense of Israel. We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed," he told reporters.

Asked by a reporter how imminent an Iranian attack is, Biden said his expectation is "sooner than later."

Israel calls to sanction Iran following ship seizure

RAMALLAH, Palestine

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz urged on Saturday the European Union and the international community to impose sanctions on Iran after it seized a cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have seized a Portuguese civilian cargo ship, belonging to an EU member, claiming Israeli ownership," Katz wrote on X.

"The Ayatollah regime of Ali Khamenei is a criminal regime that supports Hamas' crimes and is now conducting a pirate operation in violation of international law," he added.

"I call on the European Union and the free world to immediately declare the Iranian Revolutionary Guards corps as a terrorist organization and to sanction Iran now," the Israeli minister stressed.

Katz's remarks are Tel Aviv's first official comment following Iran's seizure of the ship, which the Israeli Army Radio said is "partially" owned by Israel.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed seizing a container ship belonging to an Israeli businessman near the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions between the arch-foes.

The ship named MSC Aries was seized by the marine unit of the IRGC in a special heliborne operation, state-run news agency IRNA said.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region and speculation about Iran’s imminent military strike against Iran in response to an attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria earlier this month.

At least 13 people were killed in the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, including seven Iranian military advisors, which Iranian authorities blamed on Israel.

Among those killed included Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria and Lebanon, and his deputy Gen. Hadi Haj Rahemi.

After the attack, top Iranian and military leaders warned of a “decisive response,” with some speculating on Friday that the retaliatory strike would come in less than 48 hours.

Israel says it will respond if Iran attacks from its territory, while Tehran has been urged to exercise restraint.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant have discussed "urgent" regional threats, Pentagon said on Saturday.

During a phone call, Austin reiterated unwavering US support for Israel's defense, it said in a statement.

"Secretary Austin made clear that Israel could count on full U.S. support to defend Israel against any attacks by Iran and its regional proxies," it added.

The call came amid fears that Iran will attack Israel in retaliation for the April 1 airstrike on its diplomatic facility in the Syrian capital Damascus. The strike killed at least seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two top generals.
