Columbia University canceled in-person classes Monday as campus protests over the war in Gaza enter a sixth day. The protests have swelled after the school administration called in the police to clear a student encampment last week, resulting in over 100 arrests.
Solidarity protests and encampments have now sprouted up on campuses across the country, including at Yale, MIT, Tufts, NYU, The New School and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Palestinian reporter Jude Taha, a journalism student at Columbia University, describes events on campus as "an unprecedented act of solidarity" that student organizers are modeling on antiwar protests in 1968.

She says Columbia University President Minouche Shafik's claims of an unsafe environment on campus are contradicted by the generally calm and productive atmosphere among the protesters, adding that the school's heavy-handed response, including suspensions and evictions, is being seen as "an intimidation tactic" by organizers.

UN review finds insufficient evidence for Israeli claims against UNRWA
According to an independent review conducted by former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna, "Israel" has still not provided substantial evidence to prove that UNRWA staffers are affiliated with resistance groups.

"Israel made public claims that a significant number of UNRWA employees are members of terrorist organizations," the Colonna report reads. "However, Israel has yet to provide supporting evidence of this."

The report was commissioned by the UN immediately after "Israel" leveled accusations against UNRWA's employees. It states that the agency routinely provided "Israel" with rosters of its personnel for screening and that "the Israeli government has not informed UNRWA of any concerns relating to any UNRWA staff based on these staff lists since 2011."

"Israel's" allegations caused several donors to suspend funding for the agency, widely regarded as an important lifeline for Palestinians in Gaza. While most donors started resuming funding, a few cases remain, including the UK and the US, the latter of which voted to permanently ban funding after the allegations were raised.

"Israeli authorities have to date not provided any supporting evidence nor responded to letters from UNRWA in March, and again in April, requesting the names and supporting evidence that would enable UNRWA to open an investigation," the report says.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced his acceptance of the recommendations outlined in the Colonna report regarding methods to enhance UNRWA's ability to monitor and tackle neutrality concerns.

"Moving forward, the Secretary-General appeals to all stakeholders to actively support Unrwa, as it is a lifeline for Palestine refugees in the region," the UN chief spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement.

The Colonna review further highlights the indispensable role of UNRWA in supporting Palestinians across the region.

"In the absence of a political solution between Israel and the Palestinians, UNRWA remains pivotal in providing life-saving humanitarian aid and essential social services, particularly in health and education, to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank," the review says.

"As such, UNRWA is irreplaceable and indispensable to Palestinians’ human and economic development. In addition, many view UNRWA as a humanitarian lifeline."

The Colonna review offers suggestions for enhancing neutrality safeguards for UNRWA's staff, including expanding the internal oversight service, providing more training, and increasing support from donor countries. It notes the observation that UNRWA's current measures are already more rigorous than those of similar institutions.

The review further notes that UNRWA has established numerous mechanisms to ensure compliance with humanitarian principles, particularly neutrality, surpassing other comparable UN or NGO entities in this regard.

Regarding Israeli criticisms of UNRWA's schools allegedly using Palestinian Authority textbooks with antisemitic content, the report from the Nordic institutions found limited evidence supporting these allegations. Three international assessments of PA textbooks in recent years provided an impartial view, with two identifying bias and antagonistic content but not antisemitism. The third assessment, by the Georg Eckert Institute, found two examples of antisemitic motifs, one of which had already been removed, and the other altered.

Historic Gaza Protests at Columbia U. Enter Day 6; Campus Protests Spread Across Country

There really wasn't much other news about what is going on at Columbia, so I was in the Manhattan, it is a nice spring day, and I decided to take a walk. Here is my photo montage of the Columbia University protests.

The campus is closed to outsiders - I believe that is normal procedure. The Democracy Now report said it was also closed to students, but they seemed to be letting students with IDs on to campus, as of the late afternoon.

I walked the perimeter of the campus and there was a tremendous number of police everywhere. I wasn't counting, but I guess I passed 100 policemen around patrolling the outside of the campus, and there were probably the same number on the campus. I passed 4 buses used to transport the police officers.

Three of the entrance gates (one closed) were decorated with blue and white balloons. I guess the University was showing it was not neutral on this issue.
{Edit: As it turns out, the colors of the Israeli flag are the same as the school colors of Columbia: blue and white. In fact, there is a name for the shade of Blue: Columbia Blue. Even the New York Police Department's colors are blue and white as you can see from the car at front. Conspiracy or coincidence??? }

The West entrance was also the scene of some protest. I seems like none of the protesters were students - the students were all protesting on campus. The police had separated the pro-Zionist camp from the pro-Palestinians. The pro-Palestinian side was about 4 times larger.

I also noticed a rather lengthy line (at least 200 hundred people, but it could have been much longer since I saw neither end of the line) exiting the Columbia campus and being admitted onto the Barnard College campus (Barnard is part of Columbia and across the street). Many of them had academic gowns, so presumably they were Columbia/Barnard faculty. I believe they were protesting that the university decision to expell over one hundred protesters who were living in tents on the main quad and demanding that the University divest itself from Israel.

Also, a few blocks from the West gate, I saw these pro-Palestine protesters and talked to a few of them. They were mostly in there seventies and a few seemed even older. They were quite charming and proud to be communists. (Viva la Revolucion )

And then there were these trucks circling the campus, I think four of them. Three of them were demanding the expulsion of the protesters. One had pictures of hostages or victims of the Palestinians from October 11th. It's pretty clear which side of this debate has all the AIPAC money.

As I was leaving, I saw many students entering campus and a few of them had Keffiyehs on. It's clear that this is going to go on for a while.

According to reports from local media, the largest and most important US military bases in eastern Syria have been targeted by missile attacks. Four missiles were launched at the al-Omar oil field base. The Kharab al-Jir base was targeted with three missiles and a drone was also sent to the location.

At least one of the missiles struck the Kharab al-Jir base is reported to have caused a fire. The missile attack comes after two months in which US bases in eastern Syria were not targeted. Reports of casualties at the Kharab al-Jir base remain unconfirmed.

The attacks on the al-Omar and Kharab al-Jir bases, which occurred less than an hour apart, amount to a major increase in tensions. In February, the al-Omar oil field base was targeted with rocket shells, causing only material damage.

Prior to resorting to missile attacks, small-use operations were carried out in the desert with minimal loss of life. The American air force has carried out airstrikes from its base in the areas of the allies of the Syrian Army south of the Mayadin desert.

There is a piece of land outside of Hebron which the Israeli government wants for Jewish settlements. The land has been owned and occupied by Palestinians for centuries with land records going back to the Ottoman empire. The Isreali government put up signs on the land, informing the residents that they have 60 days to contest their right to the land or otherwise they have to move out.

With a heavy heart I announce that my 18-year-old younger sister, Lara Sayegh, was killed today on her way from Gaza City to the south. She and my mother were reaching Egypt for safety. My angel collapsed as she was walking on the “safe route” past the Israeli checkpoint, in an area where the Israeli armed forces has long refused to allow any ambulances, cars, or other emergency response to enter. My mother, who was accompanying her from the Catholic church to Rafah, is currently in a coma as a result of the shock. She is in much need of your prayers. Lara is the second immediate family member I lost after my father, who died on December 21 2023 due to the prevention of medical care or ambulances to the church which they take refuge.

In the face of the enemy’s brutality that normalized all sorts of direct and indirect killings, we praise God as our judge and our refuge, even if we don't get much-needed justice on this earth, we will certainly do so in the afterlife when we all stand in front of Christ.
