It is so encouraging to hear that Assange is free. I fully expected that he would die in prison, which would have been so heartbreaking.
And I expected to see him emaciated and barely able to move, but he's in surprising good form considering his long ordeal.
Hopefully anymore over the top expenses will be paid for by his supporters, so he can finish out his days in relative peace and ease.
    God Bless him!
This news actually made me tear up, i still cant believe this untill he steps foot on Aussie soil.
Its goin to be rough for the Assange family, he is a broken man, PTSD is a real consequence, it wont be all happy smiles and joy, i just pray (im not even religeous) he readjusts to his new life and finds peace for himself and his family.
Please let this bloke get home all the way to Australia and his family.

❗️ A US judge has accepted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's plea deal after he pled guilty to one charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information relating to the national defense of the United States, the Guardian reported.

The United States will next take steps to immediately overturn remaining charges against Assange in the Eastern District of Virginia, the report said.

"I believe the First Amendment and the Espionage Act are in contradiction," Assange said when asked to explain the charge against him in his own words, the Australian channel ABC reported.

"Working as a journalist I encouraged my source to provide information that was said to be classified in order to publish that information," the news agency cited Assange.

"I believed the First Amendment protected that activity. I believe the First Amendment and the Espionage Act are in contradiction," Assange insisted, the report said.

He explained he was pleading guilty because fighting the case in court would be challenging, according to the report.

US attorney Matthew McKenzie said once the sentence is pronounced the US will move to dismiss the indictment in the Eastern District of Virginia, the report said.

❗️ Julian Assange was ordered to instruct WikiLeaks to destroy information as a condition of the deal, The Guardian reported.

Assange told a US judge that no one tried to bribe or coerce him to plead guilty to one charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information relating to the national defense of the United States, the Guardian reported.

The report said that the US government is not pursuing any forfeiture from Assange.

The WikiLeaks founder will depart to the Australian capital, Canberra, in less than 3 hours, WikiLeaks has announced on X.

"Expected to depart in 2 hours, 58 minutes. To Canberra, Australia. Flight VJT199," the portal said and attached the link to the FlightAware portal that tracks the flight.

Court is in session in the case of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange at the District Court of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Australian channel ABC reported.

"In the U.S. District Court on the island of Saipan, the long-awaited hearing in the case of Julian Assange has begun. Assange sits in the courtroom in a black suit. Behind him are Australian Ambassador to the US Kevin Rudd, Australian Ambassador to the UK Stephen Smith and human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson. All stood up when Chief Justice Romana Manglona entered the courtroom. Assange is expected to plead guilty to one criminal charge but will be released shortly with time served in a British prison," the outlet noted on its website.

Assange is accompanied in the courtroom by Australian Ambassador to the United States Kevin Rudd, the Australian outlet 9News reported.

According to a schedule on the court's website, the hearing in the case of the US v. Julian Paul Assange will be open to the public, but online streaming as well as video and audio recording of the session is prohibited under US law. The schedule indicates Assange will appear in the courtroom, followed by his formal arraignment and the defendant's statement to the court.

The judge for the hearing will be Ramona Manglona, who has served as chief judge of the Northern Mariana Islands District Court since 2011.

'Julian Assange may well be one of the most infamous and influential people in the world right now, and his release from British custody this week will only raise his profile. His supporters call him a champion of the truth, while his detractors say his work has gotten good people killed.

Jailed in 2019 after a long stay of asylum in the London Ecuadorian Embassy, Julian has feared extradition to the US under the Espionage Act since his WikiLeaks scandal. But now, it seems that quiet diplomacy has secured his release and will return to his native Australia a free man after he secured a plea deal.

Piers Morgan brings journalist Michael Shellenberger, host of Judging Freedom Judge Andrew Napolitano, radio and podcast host Ben Ferguson, former Conservative MP Louise Mensch and US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr on to Piers Morgan Uncensored to discuss Assange’s past, present and future. The only question now is, how many secrets does Julian have left to tell?

    00:00 - Introduction
    03:50 - Julian Assange freed - a victory?
08:12 - Judge Napolitano: “Assange is a national hero”
12:39 - Is there a line that journalists should be mindful of?
14:05 - Michael Shellenberger: “Journalists have now become cowards”
15:30 - Shellenberger clashes with Ben Ferguson

Julian Assange walks free after pleading guilty to US espionage charge in Saipan court.

To his supporters, Julian Assange is a valiant campaigner for truth. To his critics, he is a publicity seeker who has endangered lives by putting a mass of sensitive information into the public domain.

The WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has walked free from a court in the US Pacific island territory of Saipan, after pleading guilty to violating US espionage law, in a deal that left him free to return home to Australia and brought an end to an extraordinary 14-year legal saga.

On Wednesday, the US’s smallest and most remote federal district court accepted a plea deal reached between Assange and the US government, under terms which required him to admit guilt to one criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defence documents.

In return he was sentenced to time served, with no supervisory period or financial penalty, due to time already served in Belmarsh prison in London. He flew out of Saipan, headed for Canberra, at lunchtime on Wednesday.

His release ends a legal saga that spanned more than a decade, in which Assange spent five years in the high-security jail and seven years at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, battling extradition to the US, where he faced 18 criminal charges.
Assange is described by those who have worked with him as intense, driven and highly intelligent, with an exceptional ability to crack computer codes.

He set up Wikileaks, which publishes confidential documents and images, in 2006, making headlines around the world in April 2010 when it released footage showing US soldiers shooting dead 18 civilians from a helicopter in Iraq.

Here's Stella Assange's address to the world's media

After 5 years incarceration and a more or less non-stop 72 hours journeying it is understandably way way way too soon for Julian to be making any public statements at this time. He needs to recover and recuperate (of course ) and will speak when he feels he is ready to, at a time of his own choosing:

“If a man does not keep pace with [fall into line with] his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” - Thoreau

I reckon this must be an unpopular opinion, but, the fact he was just pretty much released like this, with the amount of mainstream and social media coverage, the deep state republicans so fondly against it (like pence)... I don't know, but it does stink. You just don't win a legal battle (like the story goes) against those who created the legal system. This was an intentional "release" be it for election credit, for further things to happen, for more info to be released in their interest... It looks obvious to me that it has a purpose, and an important one.

I don't believe this was just a good thing to happen, specially not under those circumstances. Even if the former "Julian Assange" person still exists at this point.

Cynicism of Biden Releasing Assange for Political Advantage on Full Display

Human rights activists and investigative journalists reflected on the twist of the WikiLeaks founder's fate.

"I was very pleased and happy to learn that Julian Assange will be free after more than a decade of imprisonment in the UK, both the years when he was forced to find safety in the Ecuadorian Embassy and then in the harsh conditions of Belmarsh prison," Lucy Komisar, investigative journalist based in New York, told Sputnik.
"I think Assange is being released now by Joe Biden in the hopes it might improve his standing with progressives and win him a few more votes," Komisar continued. “People concerned about Assange will understand the cynicism of Biden keeping him locked up until he thought he might get some advantage by releasing him."

President Joe Biden has seen his approval numbers plummeting with his progressive base, who have grown disenchanted with the US president over Washington's support to Israel in the Gaza war.
According to RealClearPolitics, 61.3 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, while 59.5 percent disapprove of his foreign strategy in general.
International observers believe a potential Israel-Hezbollah war could further lessen the US incumbent president's re-election chances.

"I don't think Joe Biden wanted Julian to arrive in the middle of an election campaign," Craig Murray, former British diplomat, who personally knows Assange, told Sputnik. "To be seen to be attacking freedom of speech, to be attacking constitutional rights is not a good look for the United States president whose election campaign is already in a lot of trouble over his support for genocide in Gaza."

Assange has suffered enough after spending five years in a UK maximum security prison for publishing honest information in the public interest argued Taylor Hudak, independent investigative journalist, adding that former President Donald Trump could pardon the WikiLeaks founder at the end of his tenure, but opted not too despite numerous pleas.

"This moment was made possible by the journalists fairly covering the case, the activists who relentlessly advocated for his release, the campaigners behind the scenes and his legal team," Hudak told Sputnik.

The investigative journalist insisted that "the prosecution should have never happened in the first place."

"Mr Assange should have never spent one day in jail for the so-called crime of journalism. WikiLeaks has never published a false document. It is unfortunate that Mr Assange had to plead guilty to any charge," Hudak concluded.

Bitcoin Donor Pays For Julian Assange's $520,000 Charter Jet

    BY TYLER DURDEN
    WEDNESDAY, JUN 26, 2024 - 11:45 AM
In an anonymous effort to help secure Julian Assange's freedom, an anonymous Bitcoiner donated over 8 Bitcoin, worth around $500,000, to help Assange’s family pay off the debt incurred by his charter jet and settlement expenses, CoinTelegraph reported.

On June 24, Assange was released from the high-security Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom after reaching a plea agreement with U.S. authorities. Shortly after his release, he departed the U.K. on a private plane from a London airport to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory.

Assange appeared in a district court in Saipan on June 26, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of breaching the U.S. Espionage Act by leaking classified documents. The journey was planned to prevent Assange from touching foot on American soil.

Yes, no doubt it was done for political advantage. I do not usually comment much on US politics (because it is loaded with land mines and polarization, and I do not like to upset people I like over politics) - but I will say this - Trump had a golden opportunity to pardon Assange as he was leaving office - and he did not.

He chose instead to pardon some of his son-in-laws' buddies and family. For me personally that was a HUGE black mark against Trump. HUGE. Because if it was not for Assange and the Wikileaks about the dirt on the Democrats and Hilary Clinton, I am fairly certain Trump would not have won in 2016. Julian Assange and the leaked data was PIVOTAL in my view to Trump winning in 2016 - and he chose to repay that by not pardoning him when he had the opportunity. Now he never will.

In the end, no matter how it came about - we are all happy Julian is free from that intangible torture he was put through for so long - that is really the best news - rare Happy News these days.
