Presbyterian Church (USA) votes to divest from Israel bonds
On Monday, the denomination also passed a resolution denouncing Christian Zionism.

(RNS) — The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) voted Monday (July 1) to divest from Israel bonds and begin the process of encouraging two companies it believes are contributing to human rights abuses against Palestinians in the occupied territories to quit their practices.

Both votes were wrapped up in other legislation that passed unanimously as part of the biennial gathering of the denomination meeting online and in person in Salt Lake City, Utah (June 30 to July 4).

The Presbyterian Church (USA), with about 8,800 churches and 1 million members, is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the U.S. It has been sharply critical of Israel and its policies over Palestinians for decades. Two years ago it voted to declare Israel an apartheid state, angering the U.S. Jewish establishment.

On Monday, the denomination also passed a resolution denouncing Christian Zionism, an ideological vision that it says links the State of Israel with biblical views of the “promised land,” and therefore justifies taking land away from Palestinians.

The divestment resolution calls on the Presbyterian Foundation and Board of Pensions to divest from governmental debt held by countries that are currently maintaining a prolonged military occupation and have been subject to United Nations resolutions related to their occupation. Those also include Turkey and Morocco as well as Israel.

The U.S. is the underwriter of debt securities issued by the State of Israel known as Israel bonds.

Bob Ross, a member of the steering committee of the Israel/Palestine Mission Network, a Presbyterian advocacy group that supported the overture, said the network was informed that the church holds Israel bonds though he didn’t know the exact amount of the holdings.

“Addressing Israel’s prolonged occupation of Palestinian territory is especially urgent today, as it is directly connected to the devastating war in Gaza and ongoing violence in the West Bank,” the overture reads. “This resolution would prevent our church from profiting from these occupations.”

The other overture calls on the denomination to begin a dialogue with General Electric and Palantir Technologies to encourage them to end policies that it says harm Palestinians. Specifically, it contends General Electric sells fighter jet engines used by Israel’s air force. Palantir Technologies provides Israel with artificial intelligence technology that allows Israel to surveil Palestinians. The overture directs a church group to report back to the 2026 General Assembly on whether it would recommend divestment from those companies if they are not moving toward ending their military-related production.

“There is a growing consensus in the church that we shouldn’t be profiting from Israel’s human rights abuses and, frankly, genocide against Palestinians,” said Ross, a layperson from Pittsburgh.

Another resolution that would have encouraged PCUSA-related seminaries to provide transparency around their investments failed. The resolution would have encouraged the 12 PCUSA-affiliated seminaries to follow the General Assembly’s investment strategies. The seminaries are not accountable to the General Assembly, said SueAnn Shiah, a student at Princeton Theological Seminary and an advisory delegate.

The General Assembly has 422 delegate commissioners and 82 advisory delegates.

Dujarric added, "#OCHA underscores that an evacuation of such a massive scale will only heighten the suffering of civilians and drive humanitarian needs even higher."

He explained, "People are left with the impossible choice of having to relocate, some most likely for the second or even the third time, to areas that have barely any space or services, or stay in an area where they know the fighting will take place."

Israeli top military generals are urging for a ceasefire in #Gaza, however, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in opposition to this truce, ultimately breaching the relationship with the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).

The New York Times conducted interviews with current and former Israeli generals who are in support of a ceasefire in Gaza, likely leading to a truce with Resistance in #Lebanon especially since they believe it is the most suitable solution in their vulnerable state.

“They [IOF] understand that a pause in Gaza makes de-escalation more likely in Lebanon. And they have less munitions, less spare parts, less energy than they did before — so they also think a pause in Gaza gives us more time to prepare in case a bigger war does break out with Hez-bo-llah," said former national security advisor Eyal Hulata, stressing the occupied forces' support for a full ceasefire.

Some Israeli tanks in Gaza are not loaded to their full capacity and the occupation forces are running low on shells, according to military officials.

Additionally, several officials stated that there is a presence of rapid distrust in the occupation forces with their commanders, leading to a lack of confidence in military leadership.

After saying that #Palestinian detainees should be "killed with a bullet to the head," Israeli occupation Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir admitted that what is being reported on the horrible conditions Palestinian detainees are being subjected to in Israeli prisons is true.

In a tweet on X, Ben-Gvir not only admitted that these reports are true but also said that "one of the highest goals" he has set for himself ever since he became the Israeli Police Minister is to "worsen the conditions" of the Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons and "to reduce their rights to the minimum required by law."

He once again called for the execution of Palestinian detainees as he said that he already proposed "a much simpler solution, of enacting the death penalty for terrorists, which would solve the overcrowding issue."

Battle with Hezbollah now is a strategic defeat: Ex-Gen Yitzhak Brik
Retired Major General Yitzhak Brick, who previously served as the Commissioner for Soldiers' Complaints, voiced deep concerns over the Israeli occupation's aggression on Gaza and warned of severe consequences if the war extends to the northern front with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

General Brick admitted that the Israeli occupation had faced significant losses in Gaza, emphasizing that if the situation escalates to a confrontation with Hezbollah, it could lead to a strategic defeat for "Israel".

Criticizing the current military strategy as ineffective, he pointed out that despite extensive bombardments over eight months, Hamas' underground tunnel network remains largely intact, and the Resistance movement has replenished its ranks.

Furthermore, Brick accused the IOF's spokesperson of providing misleading information regarding the effectiveness of the operations in Gaza and the number of Hamas casualties. He highlighted that Hamas fighters are not engaging in direct combat, making it challenging for Israeli forces to inflict substantial damage.

High-ranking officers in the field, according to Brick, are covertly advocating for a ceasefire to reorganize and resupply. The IOF is exhausted, with depleted ammunition and fatigued equipment, and there is a growing reluctance among reservists to rejoin the fight, he stressed.

Iran to intervene

Brick also warned that entering into a full-scale war with Hezbollah could escalate into a regional conflict involving Iran. He noted that the recent attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria has solidified Iran as a primary adversary, with the potential of daily rocket and drone attacks on the Israeli occupation. He expressed doubts about the IOF's current capacity to conduct a successful ground invasion in Lebanon due to logistical and maintenance challenges.

The general painted a grim picture of the potential impact on "Israel" of a war with Hezbollah, predicting widespread destruction of infrastructure, including power and water supplies, and significant casualties among Israelis.

This comes just after Israeli national security expert Kobi Marom expressed deep concerns about the future of the IOF and the broader implications for Israeli society.

Marom highlighted alarming statistics regarding the IOF's manpower, suggesting that these should worry every Israeli amid a decade of unprecedented security challenges.

Discussing the Israeli occupation's position on the global stage, Marom noted, "I believe Iran is observing the situation over the past nine months with great satisfaction. They see American weakness and Israel's failure on October 7, which has emboldened Iran. The situation in the north is also tied to Hamas' survival conditions," he added.

Waning, limited capabilities

The Financial Times reported last week that US officials had issued a warning to the Israeli occupation regarding its "limited ability to defend itself" if it were to engage in an open war with Hezbollah.

The report describes Hezbollah as one of the most heavily armed non-state actors in the world, highlighting the difficulty the Israeli occupation would face were it ever to engage in such an endeavor.

According to the newspaper, diplomats have conveyed that both the Israeli occupation and Hezbollah have informed the United States of their mutual desire to avoid a full-scale war.

Meanwhile, Newsweek said another war between "Israel" and the Lebanese Resistance, Hezbollah, could bring "untold devastation" to both and would be Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's greatest obstacle yet.

Although it would not be the first, Israeli officials are worried the situation could lead to total disaster in the region.
