Either NATO or Ukraine must go – Medvedev 11 Jul, 2024

The proclamation that Kiev’s movement towards membership is “irreversible” demands a response, the ex-Russian president has said

NATO’s declaration that Ukraine’s eventual membership of the US-led military bloc is “irreversible” means that either the nation or the alliance – and preferably both – should disappear, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has said.

A joint statement adopted by the leaders of NATO states during a summit in Washington this week expressed support for Ukraine’s “right to choose its own security arrangements,” and declared that it is on an “irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.”

Russia has consistently said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO would cross a ‘red line’. It cited the expansion of the bloc in Europe as one of the key triggers of the current hostilities with Kiev.

“The conclusion is obvious. We have to do everything to make sure that the ‘irreversible path of Ukraine’ towards NATO ends with either the disappearance of Ukraine, or the disappearance of NATO. Better, both,” Medvedev said on Thursday.

The wording of the joint statement, according to media reports, was intended to appease Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, who has claimed that his nation deserves to be fast-tracked into NATO in gratitude for fighting to supposedly “defend” the West from Russia. But member states, including the US, have made it clear that Ukraine will not be able to join them as a full participant while the conflict remains unresolved.

Kiev has signed numerous bilateral security agreements with Western nations in recent months in lieu of guarantees provided for under the NATO Treaty. The most recent pact was finalized with Luxembourg this week.

Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, previously called for caution in the event that Kiev made a U-turn and accepted Russia’s conditions for a negotiated peace.

He argued that such a deal, which would include Kiev’s renunciation of its NATO aspirations, could lead to a new coup in Ukraine and an even more radical government eventually seizing power.

In that scenario, he said, hostilities would resume and Ukraine’s statehood would be lost for good. But “the enemies of Russia will not go anywhere” and will “gather strength for a new attempt to destroy our country,” Medvedev predicted.

Peace talks will begin when Ukraine ‘gets real’
    – Moscow 11 Jul, 2024

Kiev’s current terms are a complete non-starter, a senior Russian diplomat has said

Ukraine must assume a more rational position for peace negotiations to resume, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko has said.

Rudenko was asked by a journalist with the RBK news channel to comment on a recent report that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, expect peace talks to begin by the end of 2024.

The diplomat advised against “setting deadlines or outlining specific timetables.” He stressed, however, that “the proposals put forward by the Ukrainian authorities, which are controlled from abroad, cannot serve as a basis for any serious negotiations.”

Talks can only resume once Kiev “takes a more realistic position,” Rudenko stated.

Russia accuses EU mission of spying in ex-Soviet country 12 Jul, 2024

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin claims Brussels may be gathering intel on Russian facilities in Armenia

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin has claimed that the EU mission in Armenia may be acting as a front for intelligence-gathering activities. He also alleged that NATO is covertly using Brussels’ presence in the country to gain a foothold in the South Caucasus region.

Last November, Yerevan signed off on an agreement stipulating the status of the EU mission on its border with Azerbaijan, which the Armenian parliament ratified in March 2024.

Speaking to RIA Novosti on Friday, Galuzin said that Russia views “the EU mission’s activities in Armenia negatively.”

“There is every reason to assume that Westerners are gathering intelligence on Russian facilities as well as all of Armenia’s neighbors,” the deputy foreign minister alleged. He pointed out that the EU mission personnel in Armenia are sending their reports directly to Brussels, apparently leaving even the host country in the dark about their contents.

Russia has a military base in the Armenian city of Gyumri, located in the northwest of the country, not far from the Turkish border. The air force component of the Russian contingent is stationed in the capital, Yerevan.

According to the diplomat, the EU is seeking to establish itself in the South Caucasus region to the detriment of such neighboring nations as Russia, Iran, and Türkiye.

The official noted that Canadian representatives joined the mission back in April, despite the country not being a member of the EU. Given that Canada is part of NATO, Galuzin conjectured that its presence in Armenia de facto means that the US-led military bloc is attempting to increase its influence in the region.

The deputy foreign minister expressed concern over the prospect of the EU mission becoming permanent even though it has not tangibly improved the tense situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

    Default Re: WW3? Ukraine/US vs. Donbass/Russia

After my last post come this: The Caspian Sea

The Caspian Sea has long served as a launch site for cruise missiles. Typically known for the Kh-101 AS-23 “Kodiak” and Kh-555 AS-15 Kent air-to-surface cruise missiles from the Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bomber, this recent event showcases an unexpected twist in the region’s military activities.

Reports have emerged confirming that Russia is conducting long-range strikes on Ukraine using ships from its Caspian Flotilla with Kalibr cruise missiles. This claim is supported by a video filmed by Russian fishermen in the Caspian Sea, which captures the flight of two such missiles.

Two cruise missiles soaring at low altitude caught the attention of some unsuspecting fishermen. Engaged in their favorite pastime, one fisherman, hearing an unusual sound, instinctively grabbed his phone. Little did he know, he was about to capture what might be the most compelling footage of a cruise missile since the onset of the war in Ukraine.

Interestingly, the range of Kalibr cruise missiles is estimated to be between 1,500 km and 2,500 km. Even at the lower end of this range, these missiles can strike significant areas from the Caspian Sea, including sizable portions of Ukraine.

Adding to this, the Russian Federation’s Caspian Flotilla includes three small Project 21631 “Buyan-M” missile ships, each capable of launching up to 8 Kalibr missiles. This flotilla is primarily based at the port of Kaspiysk in the Caspian Sea.

Furthermore, Russia can transfer vessels from its Black Sea Fleet to the Caspian Sea. This transfer is feasible via waterways connecting the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea through the Sea of Azov, the Don River, the Don-Volga Canal, and the Volga River.

Russia never sleep, they cant afford such luxury...

Russia begins production of the first Su-75 Checkmate prototypes

The production phase is set to kick off for the Su-75 Checkmate light single-engine fighter program, as announced by Rostec’s press service. The necessary preparations for this phase have already been initiated.

Further information suggests that the Russian aircraft manufacturer is also developing an unmanned version of the fighter. As the company’s chief told the TASS agency, “The idea of the unmanned version of Checkmate has been in the works since the initial design stages. Plans revolve around creating an unmanned version in conjunction with a single-seat aircraft. In theory, the development of the unmanned version will go hand-in-hand with the testing of the crewed version.”

The article by 19FortyFive argues that the Su-75 Checkmate currently has only one distinct edge – the utilization of equipment and components from its predecessor, the Su-57. As emphasized by the American publication, the fighter reuses existing research and components—“a crucial factor that could help meet the Su-75’s demanding timeline.”

Well, the song is about a guy with an addiction who's resigned to his fate, unable to escape his self-made, ruined reputation and all the consequences that go with that.

There might be quite a few US/UK/EU/Ukrainian politicians whom that story fits rather too well.

Plus it’s a very good song. When I first picked up a guitar in 1964 (while living in Germany when my father was stationed at Ramstein AFB) this was one of “the” songs you had to learn.

Ha, completely unrelated side note: When I was in the Air Force I was stationed at Ramstein AB in the 80's. I lived in Ramstein Village, Kaiserlautern, and then a decade and a half later, in Kindsbach. I loved my time in Germany.

The House of the Rising Sun is rich in symbolism and metaphor, probably why it resonates so much.

For students of materiel and weaponry, and for the record.........

    And also here on X

    Text:
Evidence about the children Hospital in Kiev:
Russia was targeting military objects in Kiev, and the strike on the hospital was caused by an AIM-120 air defense missile from the NASAMS system used by the Ukrainian side. This is evidenced by the proportional dimensions of the missile (diameter and length) and the nature of the damage (collapse of only a small part of the building and shrapnel damage on neighboring buildings). Footage showing shrapnel typical of air defense missiles was shared directly on Ukrainian Telegram channels.

The length of the AIM-120 missile is 366 cm, the diameter is 17.8 cm, and the length-to-diameter ratio is 1/20.6. For the X-101, these parameters are 745 cm, 74.2 cm, with a ratio of 1/10, and for the Kh-55, they are 588 cm, 51.4 cm, with a ratio of 1/11.4. In the screenshot from the video, it is clearly visible that even with the angle of the footage, the length of the missile exceeds its diameter by more than 15 times.

Indirect evidence includes the absence of the characteristic sound of Russian missile engines (the whistle in the second video is present but differs from that of a X-101) and the arrival of the projectile from the western direction.

Surely that photo of a missile approaching a building is a fake?

Open to correction; but I would have thought it impossible to get a photo of an incoming missile.......if the missile is hypersonic.
That did occur to me as well actually. The photo may well have been doctored/photoshopped (?). This kind of imagery always reminds me of the material that did the rounds in the early days of hardcore 9-11 research, so, I'm always a little wary in some of these instances, especially concerning still images showing projectiles of any kind.

For clarification for anyone reading here: the X-101 missile max speed at altitude is Mach 0.78. As it descends to target it will inevitably reduce speed. (The minute long version video early sections, as the missiles hit the Artem plant shows this clearly.)

I seldom ever use my Android device but do use it to take some film and photo only very occasionally. What I have observed when filming is that stabilisation is very very much improved these days, eliminating wobble.

Without claiming any expertise here I too would doubt that anyone could take a reliable photographic shot of an object moving at close to Mach-1 Sure, you can freeze-frame from a video, but getting a happy snap of an object even moving at the speeds shown in the video here, next to impossible I'd imagine

@Tintin - Sorry if I am missing the point, but Mach 0.78 is less than Mach 1 which is (surely?) categorized as sub sonic, i.e. less than the speed of sound; and therefore not hyper sonic - which is supposedly at least five-times the speed of sound?

Ah, I stand corrected. Apologies I mixed up my subs and hypers

It isn't going to be a pretty scene on the Autobahn.

Media publishes Germany’s alleged war plan
According to Der Spiegel and Bild, key highways would be at NATO’s full disposal in case of a conflict with Russia
    https://www.rt.com/news/600958-media...r-plan-russia/

The German Defense Ministry has drawn up contingency plans for a potential military conflict with Russia, Der Spiegel and Bild have reported. The document reportedly envisages Germany serving a key role as a transit state for NATO troops, with its population and civil services being expected to assist foreign military personnel.

Last month, the German government officially updated its wartime guidelines for the first time since 1989, which now include such measures as mandatory conscription and forcing manufacturers to produce war goods.

In its report on Friday, Der Spiegel alleged that under the classified ‘Operational Plan Germany’ (OPLAN DEU), the country should be able to arrange the transfer of 800,000 NATO troops and approximately 200,000 vehicles, including tanks and other hardware, from ports in the Netherlands and Belgium to the East, within three to six months. Several key highways would supposedly be used for this purpose, meaning that they would be closed to civilian traffic. Local communities would be expected to supply the passing military personnel with food, housing, resting areas, and fuel, both media outlets claimed.

Der Spiegel quoted Ralph Tiesler, president of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, as predicting that “enemy actors could take measures to hamper or slow down the movement of NATO troops,” be it through sabotage or a missile strike. German police and emergency services would reportedly have to prioritize protecting these key routes and eliminating the consequences of any attack on them.

According to Bild, citing a Defense Ministry spokesperson, aside from its role as NATO’s logistical hub, Germany would also need to establish a major prisoner-of-war camp on its soil should a military confrontation with Russia break out.

The two media outlets quoted Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer as estimating that Berlin has until 2029 to get ready for a potential military conflict with Moscow, as Russia could supposedly be in a position to attack NATO by then.

Local communities are already making provisions and holding drills for this worst-case scenario. According to Der Spiegel, citing the mayor of an unnamed town, locals have not shown any enthusiasm regarding the efforts.

“Only a few have so far comprehended what the ‘turn of eras’ means,” the media outlet quoted the official as saying.

While multiple NATO member states have claimed in recent months that Russia is harboring plans to attack the US-led military bloc, Russian President Vladimir Putin last month dismissed such allegations as “nonsense” and “bulls**t.” He suggested that those pushing such narratives have “gone completely insane.”

'We're no one's proxy': Serbia's President Vucic fires back at former NATO commander Clark

    Great Game India
    Fri, 12 Jul 2024

Former US and NATO general Wesley Clark recently accused Serbia of being a puppet for Russia and said President Vucic wanted to expand Serbia's borders. President Vucic fired back: "To Mr. Clark and everyone else, it's obvious Serbia isn't anyone's puppet — not Russia's, not America's, and never will be." Vucic also reminded people of Clark's brutal legacy in the Balkans, where he was responsible for killing Serbs and Serbian children during the 1999 NATO bombings.

There are persistent challenges to stability and hazardous Russian "ambitions" in the Balkans, according to the former commander of NATO's bombing operation in the late 1990s to protect ethnic Albanians and compel the evacuation of Yugoslav soldiers commanded by Serbs from Kosovo reports that Serbia and its former province Kosovo remain at odds with one another, according to retired U.S. Army General Wesley Clark, who also said that "Serbia is a magnet, drawing Russian imperialist ambitions into Europe."

Comment: Serbia does have good relations with Russia, however it would probably be more accurate to say that Kosovo is NATO's imperialist hub with US base Camp Bondsteel.

More than ten years of Western-mediated negotiations aimed at restoring relations between Belgrade and Pristina have generally stagnated over recognition and representation of Kosovo's ethnic Serb minority. Serbia continues to reject the independence that Kosovo declared in 2008.

"Serbia doesn't want peace, and Kosovo doesn't want to surrender its independence," Clark said in an interview marking the 25th anniversary of the end of the 79-day NATO bombardment during Kosovo's war of independence.

"The way out is Russia's defeat in Ukraine, to take the Russian backing of Serbia down to a different level," Clark said, "so Serbia understands its future with the West. When Serbs understand that, there'll be no problem with Kosovo."

Comment: It's likely that it is indeed intended as a warning. As statements go, one probably couldn't get more brazen and inflammatory than that last paragraph.

The House of the Rising Sun is rich in symbolism and metaphor, probably why it resonates so much.

While we're at it, this is a traditional song of unknown origin first recorded in 1933. Again on final album from Krokus around 2017:

There are not many songs in the whole rock genre that have this kind of legacy.

I have no idea how The Animals picked it up, but, their version more or less gave music a slap in the face. I guess I have the vocals in mind here. No one famous in the early 60s had that kind of edge that I know of. Blues and rock of course, does, but in terms of sales and getting on the radio and so forth, I think they may have pushed the envelope. I'll say this again:

Music killed the first Cold War
