Switzerland To Offer $20 ‘Suicide Pod’ Deaths to Citizens Who Can’t Afford Basic Necessities

Citizens in Switzerland who are too poor to afford basic necessities are being offered the chance to be euthanized at a discounted price, the government announced on Wednesday.

The portable suicide pods will be used for the first time in Switzerland, allowing people will various illnesses, mental issues, or social problems to end their life for just $20.

http://Firstpost.com reports: The space-age-looking Sarco capsule, first unveiled in 2019, replaces the oxygen inside it with nitrogen, causing death by hypoxia. It would cost $20 to use.

The Last Resort organisation said it saw no legal obstacle to its use in Switzerland, where the law generally allows assisted suicide if the person commits the lethal act themselves.

“Since we have people indeed queueing up, asking to use the Sarco, it’s very likely that it will take place pretty soon,” The Last Resort’s chief executive Florian Willet told a press conference.

“I cannot imagine a more beautiful way (to die), of breathing air without oxygen until falling into an eternal sleep,” he added.

The person wishing to die must first pass a psychiatric assessment of their mental capacity – a key legal requirement.

The person climbs into the purple capsule, closes the lid, and is asked automated questions such as who they are, where they are and if they know what happens when they press the button.

“‘If you want to die’, the voice says in the processor, ‘Press this button’,” said Sarco inventor Philip Nitschke, a leading global figure in right-to-die activism.

Unknown Source on Sea Floor is Producing ‘Large Amounts’ of Oxygen yesterday

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, around half of Earth's oxygen comes from the ocean. The production can typically be linked to oceanic plankton, drifting plants, algae and certain bacteria, with all four are capable of photosynthesis.

Scientists are searching for the explanation behind a rather strange phenomenon: at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean there are large amounts of oxygen being produced by an unknown source. The finding is odd, to say the least, considering that photosynthesis is impossible in such deep, dark depths.

“We have another source of oxygen on the planet, other than photosynthesis,” said Andrew Sweetman, a study co-author, and a sea-floor ecologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban, UK.

He adds that the findings could have implications for understanding how life on Earth first began, as well as the possible impact of deep-sea mining in the region.
Sweetman first observed the phenomenon in 2013 while studying the Clarion-Clipperton zone which is an area between Mexico and Hawaii. At the time Sweetman believed he had faulty equipment when it showed him oxygen was being made on the seafloor.
Donald Canfield, a biogeochemist at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, said the observation is “fascinating,” but added that it is “frustrating, because it raises a lot of questions and not very many answers”.

A group of researchers, whose study was published Monday in Nature, believe electrochemical activity is being produced by polymetallic nodules made of manganese and iron. These nodules look a bit like lumps of coal and are believed to be responsible for splitting H2O molecules.
The nodules have required millions of years to form and are made of minerals which can be used to create batteries, raising the possibility that mining companies may take an interest in the discovery.
But while these minerals could help with the transition to green energy, environmental scientists and activists believe deep-sea mining could upend ecosystems in unpredictable ways and affect the ocean’s ability to shield our planet from the effects of climate change. Mining that took place in the 1980s left behind an environment in which even bacteria have not been able to recover, according to marine biologists.

Hundreds of firefighters tackle Durkee Fire in eastern Oregon, the largest wildfire in US
Around 20% of the over 270,000-acre Durkee Fire has been contained in what's becoming the largest wildfires in Oregon history.


PORTLAND, Ore. — Hundreds of firefighters are working to tackle the Durkee Fire, the largest wildfire in the U.S., over the last several days, which has now grown to over 270,000 acres.

On Thursday, firefighting resources focused on the fire's northwest flank after heavy winds up to 75 miles per hour pushed the fire Wednesday. The fire has been mostly fueled by a mix of grass, sage brush, juniper and different conifers — easy to burn through.

"We've had extreme winds on this fire, which have caused extreme fire behavior on this fire," said Ryan Sullivan, operations section chief with the Oregon State Fire Marshal team and Northwest Team 6.

Despite the fire's growth, Sullivan said he's more confident as of Thursday with the more favorable conditions for crews. He said with the little bit of rain that came Wednesday night, crews have been able to tackle the fire from the interior where it's safe to do so.

"This is a very large footprint of a fire — obviously the biggest one, like they said," said Anthony Foster, who's on Oregon State Fire Marshals team.

On Wednesday afternoon when the fire crossed Interstate 84 near the town of Huntington, home to about 500 people, the focus became protecting people's homes, a move that so far has worked. Evacuation notices for Huntington dropped Thursday morning from a Level 3 (GO NOW) to a Level 1 (BE READY) for around 300 homes.

Foster said his team plans to stay until the fire is under control or until it's at a point where local fire resources are able to manage it.

"It's early so far, July… you'll see us moving from fire to fire, and so if you see us leaving an area, we've left it in a place we can say... we think they can handle it, and we're moving on to the next one," Foster said.

The Durkee Fire is one of 44 major wildfires burning in the Northwest, the vast majority of them are in Oregon.

On Thursday, officials said around 20% of the Durkee Fire has been contained, mostly along its southern flank, though there's still a lot to be done on what's become one of the largest fires in Oregon's history.

Man accused of starting California’s Park Fire is arrested as Oregon battles massive blaze

The largest active wildfire in the United States has scorched almost 270,000 acres in eastern Oregon, as nearly 80 large active wildfires are burning in the US, including a California blaze that exploded in size overnight. Here’s the latest:

• California battles northern blaze: The Park Fire in California has exploded to nearly 125,00 acres and is 3% contained, according to CalFire. A suspect has been arrested after being identified pushing a car engulfed in fire 60 feet into a gully, “spreading flames that caused the Park Fire,” the Butte County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday afternoon. The blaze has forced mandatory evacuations in Butte County, where the state’s deadliest wildfire, the Camp Fire, killed more than 80 people in 2018.

• Oregon fire is 20% contained: The Durkee Fire, which has burned an area larger than the city of Indianapolis, started on July 17 near the Oregon-Idaho state line. Amid high temperatures, extremely dry vegetation and strong winds, the fire has grown tens of thousands of acres since Sunday and is 20% contained as of Thursday afternoon, according to InciWeb.

• Durkee Fire threatens nearby communities: Three people were injured and two homes and 12 other structures were destroyed as the fire spread, according to the Oregon Department of Emergency Management. Officials have asked some residents to evacuate. Some communities do not have power, according to Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, who has deployed resources from the National Guard to assist.

• Two fires threaten national park in Canada: The flames closing in on the nation’s largest national park from two directions sent visitors and residents fleeing the town of Jasper in Alberta, where buildings are burned. Officials say the losses are significant, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has deployed federal support to help battle the blaze.

California wildfire explodes in size overnight

A 42-year-old man, identified as Ronnie Dean Stout II, has been arrested after witnesses reported seeing someone “pushing a car that was on fire into a gully near the Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park shortly before 3:00 p.m. yesterday,” according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey. “The car went down an embankment approximately 60 feet and burned completely, spreading flames that caused the Park Fire.”

The DA says the man was seen “calmly leaving the area by blending in with the other citizens who were in the area and fleeing the rapidly evolving fire.”

Stout was arrested at a mobile home park in Chico, California, around 2 a.m., Ramsey said.

He has two previous strikes in California, including a 2001 conviction in Butte County for lewd acts on a child under 14, and another in 2002 in Kern County for robbery with great bodily injury, when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, Ramsey added. In California, people with two prior strikes – convictions of violent or serious felonies – receive significantly longer prison sentences if convicted of a third felony.

Prison records were not immediately available but CNN reached out to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for more information.

The suspect is being held without bail pending his arraignment, which is set for Monday, according to the DA’s office.

Stout will likely face an arson charge, though it is unclear what count, or whether any enhancements will be added, Ramsey said. The DA’s office told CNN Stout has not retained an attorney and will be assigned a public defender at his arraignment.

Triple-digit temperatures and high wind gusts have fueled the fire’s growth.

Some residents in Butte County were asked to evacuate, as the fire grew to nearly 40,000 acres overnight to an area roughly the size of Washington, DC. By Thursday morning, the fire had burned an average of nearly 50 football fields per minute since it started Wednesday afternoon. Triple-digit temperatures and high wind gusts have fueled its growth.

There are more than 200 firefighters deployed to fight the blaze, according to CalFire.

Oregon fires ‘scaled up quickly’

The lightning-sparked Durkee Fire is the largest of 31 large wildfires currently burning across Oregon, which has been the hardest hit by fires in recent days.

Officials in eastern Oregon’s Malheur County and Baker County had issued evacuations for areas around the Durkee Fire since its beginning.

However, as of Thursday afternoon, all evacuation recommendations for the Durkee Fire in Malheur County have been lifted, said the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office in a social media post. As for Baker County, many areas’ evacuation levels have been reduced or eliminated, according to the county’s Sheriff’s Office.

Dense smoke from the flames have impeded traffic on Interstate 84, leading to periodic closure of the freeway.

Kotek called it a “dynamic situation.”

“The wildfires in Eastern Oregon have scaled up quickly,” Kotek said in a news release. “We are facing strong erratic winds over the region that could impact all fires. Rain is not getting through. Some communities do not have power.”

More than 500 firefighters and resources from 22 states are working to fight the fire, according to InciWeb.

“We have been at this for a number of days, and those days just seem to keep getting harder and harder with the weather that we’re seeing in our area and the intense fire behavior,” Sarah Sherman of the Bureau of Land Management said in a video update.

Over the weekend and earlier this week, the Durkee Fire exhibited extreme fire behavior, even creating it’s own weather in the form of pyrocumulus clouds.

The clouds form over heat sources due to the intense, upward vertical motion of air cooling and condensing as it moves higher into the sky. They can reach heights of 50,000 feet and generate their own systems of thunderstorms.

If fires burn hot enough, they can create clouds that produce lighting and rain, called pyrocumulonimbus.

“Over the last week, firefighters have been challenged by hot temperatures and gusty winds that continue to push several wildfires across the state,” the Oregon State Fire Marshal said.

Wildfire smoke, including from the Durkee Fire in Oregon, was spreading into Boise and beyond. Air quality alerts have been issued for parts of Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Patrick Nauman, the owner of Weiser Classic Candy in the small town of Weiser, Idaho, told the Associated Press that driving into town Wednesday morning was “like driving into a fog bank, because it’s so thick and low to the road.”

“Yesterday you could smell it, taste it, it just kind of hung in the back of your throat,” Nauman said of the smoke.

A cold front has moved through the area Thursday morning, bringing high temperatures to the 80s on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. A red flag warning, which indicates increased risk of fire danger, has expired.

According to Alex Jones (during an appearance on Steel News with Ann Vandersteel ), his recent trip and stay in California was to be involved with a team who penetrated the grove and recorded many hours of material including 'incriminating' conversations. Perhaps that was Jones's own hyperbole, we'll find out I guess.

It was a quite large team of 10 or 12 and 2 of them got arrested. I expect there to be a significant exposure presentation soon. This video above may be an early glimpse of a lot more to come.

In Taiwan, three people died and hundreds were injured. In the Philippines, 21 people died due to floods and landslides, and there was a serious oil spill when the ship MT Terra Nova sank in Manila Bay with 1.5 million liters of fuel.

Philippine authorities fear one of the country's worst environmental disasters.

In Taiwan, rescue teams are searching for nine crew members from a sunken cargo ship.

We stand with everyone in the Philippines and Taiwan who are experiencing flooding from Typhoon Gaemi, and hope you and your families are safe.

Tragically, one of the impacts of this typhoon has been the sinking of a Philippine oil tanker in Manila Bay. The ship was carrying about 370,000 gallons of oil, and if the situation is not contained quickly, it could potentially become the worst oil spill in the country’s history.

Oceana’s team in the Philippines is monitoring the situation closely and calling on the government to take swift action to control the spread of the oil and limit the impact to local habitats and wildlife. Looking forward, we must protect local communities, marine life, and our oceans by moving away from dirty fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable energy.
