Israeli aerial aggression targets Beirut’s Southern Suburb

Israel’s military has said it carried out a strike on a southern suburb of Beirut targeting the Hezbollah commander behind the July 27 attack on Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which killed 12 children. Hezbollah has denied responsibility for that attack.
Al Jazeera is working to confirm casualties of the strike, which hit in the Haret Hreik suburb, a Hezbollah stronghold. Lebanon’s National News Agency has reported at least one person was killed and several wounded.
The strike hit an apartment building near to a hospital, collapsing half of the targeted building, according to reports. The hospital sustained minor damages, while the surrounding streets were littered with debris and broken glass.
A source close to Hezbollah told AFP that senior commander Fuad Shukr, also known as Muhsin Shukr, who is leading the group's operations against Israel in south Lebanon, survived an Israeli strike in the group's southern Beirut stronghold.
The attack was the first in the vicinity of Beirut since January, when an airstrike killed top Hamas official Saleh Arouri. That strike was the first time Israel had hit Beirut since the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006.

It's a matter of "how" this retaliation will be?

The Israelis didn't want a war anyway, they only wanted to take advantage of the situation to restore deterrence and embarrass Hezbollah. However, they didn't only fail to convince anyone that Hezbollah was responsible for the attack on Majdal Shams, they also failed to assassinate the targeted person.

The assassination of someone like Fouad Shukri requires a strong response, and attacking the southern suburb is a red line.

Now Hezbollah has the right to retaliate very hard and even attack Tel Aviv itself, but would it do it?

Rationally speaking, since the assassination has failed, Hezbollah would probably choose an important target in Haifa or northern Palestine.

But the irony would be that the one who they attempted to kill will be the one who will orchestrate the retaliation.

Lebanese officials rally behind Hezbollah after Israeli aggression
Lebanese officials and leaders of political parties condemned the Israeli aggression on Beirut's Southern Suburb, as Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati stated that Lebanon would retain its full right to deter Israeli aggression.

The Israeli aggression on a residential building in Haret Hreik killed at least 3 citizens and injured 74 others, the Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday.

The Lebanese Prime Minister said that Lebanon will "place the aggression before the international community, which must exert all its strength to compel Israel to cease its aggression and threats."

"We will retain our full right to take all measures to deter Israeli aggression," Mikati underlined.

The Lebanese Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, spoke to Reuters in the aftermath of the strike, saying that Lebanon plans to file a complaint to the United Nations.

Bou Habib hoped for a proportionate response to the Israeli aggression by Hezbollah, as per Reuters, "so that this wave of killing will stop."

Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamieh told Al Mayadeen that the strike "reflects the malice of the Israeli enemy."

Lebanese politicians, leaders blast Israeli aggression

The aggression also saw wide-ranging condemnation from different political leaders and parties.

Superior Shia Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Qabalan said the attack on the Southern Suburb of Beirut is "a mad act," describing the decision to attack the area as "a desperate Zionist suicide."

On his part, the head of the Marada Movement Sleiman Frangieh condemned and denounced the "brutal aggression."

"Every day it becomes clear that there is no way to liberate or confront this enemy other than through resistance," the leader of the Marada party underlined.

The political aide to the Lebanese Parliament Speaker Ali Hassan Khalil told Al Mayadeen that the strike "is a direct Israeli aggression against Lebanon."

He said that Lebanon's position is clear, "Israel will bear the consequences of any aggression it carries out."

"The official Lebanese stance is rational and balanced, reflecting the Lebanese people's right to reject Israeli aggression and defend their land," he added.

Moreover, the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Member of Parliament Gebran Bassil, said "Israel must know it will not overcome Lebanon’s Resistance."

"As Lebanese, we must recognize that our national solidarity, despite our political differences, is what saves us all," he added.

The Islamic Group in Lebanon condemned the attack and said the Israeli regime "added a new crime to its list of crimes committed against civilians in Palestine and Lebanon."

"We affirm our right and the right of the Resistance [factions], alongside the Lebanese Army, to defend our people and cities and repel the aggression," the movement added.

Member of Parliament, Faisal Karami, lambasted the international community for its inactions regarding Israeli aggressions.

"The primary responsibility for igniting this war lies with the international community, which watches our blood and destruction," he stressed.

What pure trash.

Could just say "attempt to assassinate Hezbollah commander", followed by "failed" and "killed more civilians".

I was leery it might have been a big carpet bombing, so, at least it didn't turn out to be that bad, yet. Bad enough that something will come out of this, and, of course, they will do something Stupid tomorrow. This never ends.

It's slow, because "Lebanon" isn't "Hezbollah", about like the Golani Druze are not the Syrian Druze. Just means they are the strongly pacifistic factions. That's not particularly wise in the face of fascist death squads. They're not easy to stop.

As to the earlier post, "de-recognize Israel", you could easily do that and give the whole hog to Palestine, which seems to be the fairest answer on moral grounds. The "fix" is pretty easy, minus the obstinacy of fascist death squads.

My expectation is this will all get much, much worse, before it gets any better. I just don't see much alternative due to the soul disease of so many superstitious Neanderthals. Last time I checked, millions of them are still plugging for this total destruction thing. We don't really need that on this planet.
