Mehdi Hasan interviews Ami Ayalon, the former head of Israel's Security Service, Shin Bet, and the ex-commander of the Israeli Navy, in the latest episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered.’

Ayalon discusses why he believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and far right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir pose a threat to Israeli democracy, calls for an end to the occupation, and explains why he would resist Israel if he were Palestinian.

As reports of Israeli torture and abuse against detained Palestinians continue to emerge, Hasan also challenges Ayalon on allegations of torture under Shin Bet during his tenure. The former security chief admits he has "many regrets."

The zionist mafia still trying to censor journalists that report the facts about Israel's genocide. Eitheir they kill journalists, or have them imprisoned.
I was shocked and saddened to learn what they did to Richard Medhurst, just today. I very much like him, and have never seen anything advocating terrorism in his reports.
On the other hand, there is so much evidence of apartheid Israel behaving like a terrorist.

Independent Journalist Arrested Under Terrorism Act in UK

    August 19, 2024

Independent Journalist Richard Medhurst was arrested in the UK on Thursday under the UK’s Terrorism Act 2000, according to a video he posted Monday on X recounting the experience.

“On Thursday, as I landed in London’s Heathrow airport, I was immediately escorted off the plane by six police officers who were waiting for me at the entrance of the aircraft. They arrested me – not detained – they arrested me under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act of 2000 and accused me of allegedly ‘expressing an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organization’ but wouldn’t explain what this meant,” Medhurst says in the video.

Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 has a clause that was added in 2019 that made it illegal to “expresses an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organization” if “in doing so is reckless as to whether a person to whom the expression is directed will be encouraged to support a proscribed organization.”

Medhurst’s reporting has focused heavily on the Israeli-Gaza war and has spoken out against funding Ukraine. He also posted about the very act that he was arrested for.

“The fascist ‘terrorism act’ being used to hold activists without charge or trial because they tried to stop actual terrorism and genocide by the IDF," Medhurst posted the same day he was arrested. Medhurst was referring to Palestinian activists who have been detained recently under the Terrorism Act.

“I was arrested at Heathrow Airport under the Terrorism Act, Sec 12 because of my reporting.
6 police officers were waiting for me at the entrance of the aircraft.
I was held for almost 24 hours and questioned.
I believe I'm the first journalist to be arrested under this… pic.twitter.com/pbf6q5dXIf
    — Richard Medhurst (@richimedhurst) August 19, 2024”

Medhurst says he was then handcuffed and transferred to a police station where he was searched and his electronic devices seized.

“I was placed in solitary confinement, in a cold cell that smelled like urine. There was barely any light and the bed, if you can even call it a bed, was simply a small concrete ledge with a paper-thin mattress. The cell had no windows, no heating, no toilet paper. I was recorded 24/7 with audio and video, even when going to the toilet. I had to eat food with a piece of cardboard you’re supposed to fold in two in order to scoop up the meal,” Medhurst said, describing the conditions he was held in.
He was then held for nearly 24 hours without being allowed to contact his family and his attempts to speak to a solicitor (UK legal advisor) were hindered and possibly monitored.

“The police said that I have the right to inform someone that I’m locked up. So I said okay, I want to call my family, then they go ‘Well, your calls are withheld due to the nature of the alleged offense’ I tried to ask well, what’s the point of a right if you can just randomly withdraw it? Why tell me that I have this right at all? And one of them said something along the lines of ‘Well, it’s not an absolute right, it can be waived,’” Medhurst described.

“For many hours, no one in the world knew what had happened to me or where I was. Only the police could call a solicitor for me. I had to ask four or five different guards for several hours before I finally received a call. Some of my solicitor’s calls did not get through or were not answered. One of the calls -my solicitor was told- would be monitored, and so they simply refused to take it. I asked to speak to the solicitor afterwards when that happened but I was not allowed to.”

“In total, I spent almost 24 hours in detention. At no point whatsoever was I allowed to speak to a family member or friend. After waiting 15 hours, I was finally interviewed by two detectives,” Medhurst says the interview lasted 60 to 90 minutes.

Medhurst emphasized that he denies all accusations by the police, noting that his parents held Nobel Peace Prizes for their work as UN peacekeepers and he “categorically and unequivocally” condemns terrorism.

“Those like myself, who are speaking up and reporting on the situation in Palestine are being targeted. I had booked my ticket to London on the same day and yet an entire team of police were mobilized to arrest and question me. This is why I felt this was a preplanned, coordinated arrest. Many people have been detained in Great Britain because of their journalism, sometimes under the Terrorism Act, sometimes not. I think of Julian Assange, Craig Murray, Kit Klarenberg, David Miranda, Vanessa Beeley. As far as I am aware, I am the only journalist, however, to have been arrested and held for up to 24 hours under section 12 of the Terrorism Act.”

Medhurst said that he now feels he has a “muzzle” put on him, and does not know if he will be charged with the crime he was arrested for or if he will be put in jail in a few months, something that makes his work more difficult. “I simply do not know if or how I can work at all during the next month.

Former UN weapons inspector and geopolitical analyst Scott Ritter, whose house was raided by the United States FBI earlier this month for alleged violations of the Foreign Agents Registry Act, called the arrest “political persecution” designed to “hamper [Medhurst’s] important work as a journalist.”

“Freedom of the press, freedom of speech really are under attack. The state is cracking down and escalating to try and stop people from speaking out against our government’s complicity in genocide, please do not just stand with me, but with the others who are still inside,” Medhurst concluded.
UK authorities have not commented on Medhurst’s arrest. His website currently displays an error page but it is not clear if Medhurst removed it voluntarily, at the direction of UK authorities, or if the site was taken down by service providers. Sputnik has reached out to Medhurst for clarification and will update this space if he replies.

Why Israeli soldiers rape, torture and massacre
Instilling fear in the Palestinian people is not a side effect of the IDF’s brutal violations of human rights. It is the strategy.

On October 25, Israeli politician Moshe Feiglin told Arutz Sheva-Israel National News that “Muslims are not afraid of us anymore.”
It might sound odd that Feiglin saw the element of fear as critical to Israel’s well-being if not its very survival.

In actuality, the fear element is directly linked to Israel’s behavior and fundamental to its political discourse.

Historically, Israel has carried out massacres with a specific political strategy in mind: to instill the desired fear to drive Palestinians off their land. Deir Yassin, Tantara and the over 70 documented massacres during the Palestinian Nakba, or Catastrophe, are cases in point.

Israel has also utilized torture, rape and other forms of sexual assault to achieve similar ends in the past, to exact information or to break down the will of prisoners.
UN-affiliated experts said in a report published on August 5 that "these practices are intended to punish Palestinians for resisting occupation and seek to destroy them individually and collectively."

Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza has manifested all these horrific strategies in ways unprecedented in the past, both in terms of widespread application and frequency.
In a report entitled ‘Welcome to Hell’, published on August 5, the Israeli rights group, B’tselem, said that Israel’s detention “facilities, in which every inmate is deliberately subjected to harsh, relentless pain and suffering operate as de-facto torture camps”.

A few days later, the Palestinian rights group, Addameer, published its own report, “documented cases of torture, sexual violence, and degrading treatment”, along with the “systematic abuses and human rights violations committed against detainees from Gaza.”

If incidents of rape, sexual assaults and other forms of torture are marked on a map, they would cover a large geographical area, in Gaza, in the West Bank, and Israel itself—mostly notably in the notorious Sde Teiman Camp.
Considering the size and locations of the Israeli army, well-documented evidence of rape and torture demonstrates that such tactics are not linked to a specific branch of the military. This means that the Israeli army uses torture as a centralized strategy.

Such a strategy has been associated with the likes of Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s national security minister. His aggressive statements, for example, that Palestinian prisoners should be “shot in the head instead of being given more food”, are perfectly aligned with his equally violent actions: the starvation policy of prisoners, the normalization of torture and the defense of rape.

But Ben-Gvir did not institute these tortuous policies. They have predated him by decades and were used against generations of Palestinian prisoners, who are granted few rights compared to those enshrined by international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention.

But why does Israel torture Palestinians on such a large scale?

Israeli wars against Palestinians are predicated on two elements: a material and a psychological one. The former has manifested itself in the ongoing genocide, the killing and wounding of tens of thousands and the near destruction of Gaza.
The psychological factor, however, is intended to break the will of the Palestinian people.

Law for Palestine, a legal advocacy group published a database of over 500 instances of Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, inciting genocide in Gaza.

Most of these references seem to be centered on dehumanizing the Palestinians. For example, the October 11 statement by Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog, that "there are no innocent civilians in Gaza", was part of the collective death sentence that made the extermination of Palestinians morally justifiable in the eyes of Israelis.

Netanyahu's own ominous biblical reference, where he called on Israeli soldiers to seek revenge from Palestinians, stating "Remember what Amalek has done to you", was also a blank check for mass murder.

While choosing not to see Palestinians as humans, as innocent, as worthy of life and security, Israel has granted its army carte blanche to do as it saw fit to those, in the words of Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, "human animals".

The mass killing, starvation and widespread rape and torture of Palestinians are a natural outcome of these shocking dialectics. But the overall purpose of Israel is not simply to exact revenge, though the latter has been quite important to Israel's desire for national recovery.
By trying to break the will of the Palestinians through torture, humiliation and rape, Israel wants to restore a different kind of deterrence, which it lost on October 7.

Failing to restore military or strategic deterrence, Tel Aviv is invested in psychological deterrence, as in restoring the element of fear that was breached on October 7.

Raping prisoners, leaking videos of the gruesome acts, and carrying out the same horrific deed, again and again, are all part of the Israeli strategy—that of restoring fear.

But Israel will fail, simply because Palestinians have already succeeded in demolishing Israel's 76-year matrix of physical domination and mental torture.
The Israeli war on Gaza has proven to be the most destructive and bloody of all Israeli wars. Yet, Palestinian resilience continues to grow stronger, because Palestinians are not passive, but active participants in the shaping of their own future.

If popular resistance is indeed the process of the restoration of the self, Palestinians in Gaza are proving that, despite their unspeakable pain and agony, they are emerging as a whole, ready to clinch their freedom, no matter the cost.

It seems that UK are sleepwalking in to full-blown Tyranny day by day! ... With great help from mass brainwashing mainstream media being 100% complicit. ○ We have clear evidence that Britain is contributing to intelligence efforts in Gaza on behalf of Israel.

    ○ Britain's contribution to the intelligence effort in Gaza is done in cooperation with the US.

    ○ The British participation directly contributed to the killing of thousands of women and children in the Gaza Strip.

    ○ We call on Britain to stop its intelligence cooperation with Israel and to cease its participation in the genocide.

Default Re: Israel vs Palestine/Lebanon/Iran/Yemen/Syria: a New Middle East War

    • Artificial Genocidal Intelligence: How Israel Is Automating Human Rights Abuses And War Crimes
Recent public discourse on artificial intelligence (AI) has been dominated by doomsday scenarios and sci-fi predictions of advanced AI systems escaping human control. As a result, when people talk about AI warfare, they tend to think of fully automated “killer robots” on the loose. What Israel’s war on Gaza has revealed, however, is that much more mundane and not particularly sophisticated AI surveillance systems are already being used to unleash dystopian, tech-driven horrors.

As recent media investigations have uncovered, Israeli AI targeting systems “Lavender” and “The Gospel” are automating mass slaughter and destruction across the Gaza Strip. This is the apotheosis of many AI rights-abusing trends, such as biometric surveillance systems and predictive policing tools, that we have previously warned against. The AI-enhanced warfare in Gaza demonstrates the urgent need for governments to ban uses of technologies that are incompatible with human rights — in times of peace as well as war.
    • Death from above: Gaza as an experimental tech laboratory
Israel’s use of AI in warfare is not new. For decades, Israel has used the Gaza Strip as a testing ground for new technologies and weaponry, which it subsequently sells to other states. Its 11-day military bombardment of Gaza in May 2021 was even dubbed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) the “first artificial intelligence war.” In the current assault on Gaza, we’ve seen Israel use three broad categories of AI tools:
    • Lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) and semi-autonomous weapons (semi-LAWS): The Israeli army has pioneered the use of remote-controlled quadcopters equipped with machine guns and missiles to surveil, terrorize, and kill civilians sheltering in tents, schools, hospitals, and residential areas. Residents of Gaza’s Nuseirat Refugee Camp report that some drones broadcast sounds of babies and women crying, in order to lure out and target Palestinians. For years, Israel has deployed “suicide drones,” automated “Robo-Snipers,” and AI-powered turrets to create “automated kill-zones” along the Gaza border, while in 2021, it also deployed a semi-autonomous military robot named “Jaguar,” promoted as “one of the first military robots in the world that can substitute soldiers on the borders.”
    • Facial recognition systems and biometric surveillance: Israel’s ground invasion of Gaza was an opportunity to expand its biometric surveillance of Palestinians, already deployed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The New York Times reported on how the Israeli military is using an expansive facial recognition system in Gaza “to conduct mass surveillance there, collecting and cataloging the faces of Palestinians without their knowledge or consent.” According to the report, this system uses technology from Israeli company Corsight and Google Photos to pick out faces from crowds and even from grainy drone footage.
    • Automated target generation systems: most notably the Gospel, which generates infrastructural targets, Lavender, which generates individual human targets, and Where is Daddy?, a system designed to track and target suspected militants when they are at home with their families.
LAWS, and to a certain degree semi-LAWS, have been condemned by the UN as “politically unacceptable and morally repugnant,” and there are growing calls for them to be banned. The use of AI target-generation systems in warfare, coupled with biometric mass surveillance, warrants further attention, given how they demonstrate the devastating, even genocidal, wartime impact of technologies that should already be banned in peacetime.
    • Automating genocide: the fatal consequences of AI in warfare
While they may initially seem like a shocking new frontier, the use of targeting systems such as the Gospel or Lavender is in fact merely the apex of another AI system already used worldwide: predictive policing. Just as the Israeli army uses “data-driven systems” to predict who may be a Hamas operative or which building may be a Hamas stronghold, law enforcement use AI systems to predict which children might commit a crime or be part of a gang, or where to deploy extra police forces. Such systems are inherently discriminatory and profoundly flawed, with severe consequences for the people concerned. In Gaza, those consequences can be fatal.

When we consider the impact of such systems on human rights, we need to look at the consequences, first, if they malfunction and second, if they work as intended. In both situations, reducing human beings to statistical data points has grave and irreversible consequences for people’s dignity, safety, and lives.

When it comes to targeting systems malfunctioning, a key concern is that these systems are built and trained on flawed data. According to +972 Magazine’s investigation, the training data fed into the system included information on non-combatant employees of Gaza’s Hamas government, resulting in Lavender mistakenly flagging as targets individuals with communication or behavioral patterns similar to those of known Hamas militants. These included police and civil defense workers, militants’ relatives, and even individuals who merely had the same name as Hamas operatives.

As reported by +972 Magazine, even though Lavender had a 10% error rate when identifying an individual’s affiliation with Hamas, the IDF got sweeping approval to automatically adopt its kill lists “as if it were a human decision.” Soldiers reported not being required to thoroughly or independently check the accuracy of Lavender’s outputs or its intelligence data sources; the only mandatory check before authorizing a bombing was to ensure that the marked target was male, which took about “20 seconds.”

There is also no robust way to test such systems’ accuracy, nor to validate their performance. The process of verifying a person’s affiliation with Hamas is extremely complex, especially given the potentially flawed nature of the data such predictions are based on. It has been repeatedly shown that machine learning systems cannot reliably predict complex human attributes, such as “potential future criminality,” both because the data is inadequate and the systems rely on proxies (e.g. data about arrests as opposed to data on actual crimes committed), but also because it is simply not the case that “more data equals better predictions.

Beyond such systems’ lack of accuracy or human verification, a more existential concern is how their use is fundamentally at odds with human rights, and the inherent human dignity from which those rights derive. This is demonstrated by the reality that Israel’s AI targeting systems are working just as intended; as the IDF has said, “right now we’re focused on what causes maximum damage.” Soldiers were reportedly pressured to produce more bombing targets each day and have allegedly used unguided missiles, or “dumb bombs,” to target alleged junior militants marked by Lavender in their homes. This, coupled with Israel’s use of AI to calculate collateral damage, has resulted in the mass killing of Palestinians and a level of destruction not seen since World War II, according to the UN.

The use of these AI targeting systems effectively offloads human responsibility for life-and-death decisions, attempting to hide an utterly unsophisticated campaign of mass destruction and murder behind a veneer of algorithmic objectivity. There is no ethical or humane way to use systems such as Lavender or Where is Daddy? because they are premised on the fundamental dehumanization of people. They must be banned — and we need to abolish the surveillance infrastructure, biometric databases, and other “peacetime tools” that enable such systems to be deployed in war zones.
    • Big Tech’s role in atrocity crimes
As discussed above, surveillance infrastructure developed and deployed during peacetime is easily repurposed during war to enable the worst human rights abuses. This brings into question the role of Big Tech companies in supplying civilian technologies that can be used for military ends — most notably the cloud computing and machine learning services that Google and Amazon Web Services provide to Israel through Project Nimbus. Additionally, it has been suggested that metadata from WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is being used to provide data for the Lavender targeting system.

By failing to address their human rights responsibilities, and continuing to provide these services to Israel’s government, companies such as Google, AWS, and Meta risk being complicit in aiding or abetting the Israeli military and intelligence apparatus and its alleged atrocity crimes in Gaza.

We cannot allow the development of mass surveillance infrastructure that can be used to produce targets in bulk, determine a “reasonable” number of civilian casualties, and ultimately abdicate human responsibility for life-and-death decisions. We reiterate our call on all governments to ban uses of AI that are incompatible with human rights, including predictive policing, biometric mass surveillance, and target generation systems such as Lavender. The systems Israel is using in Gaza, together with the government’s long-standing and ever-expanding mass surveillance lab, offer a glimpse into an even more dystopian future that cannot and should not ever be allowed to come to fruition.

No need to follow anyone, only consider broadening (y)our horizon of possibilities ...

It may take a few days to clear the air. There is no such thing as negotiations:

Quote All the optimistic hype in the media around the Doha talks was a “miscalculation and misreading” of the actual developments.

The replacement of assassinated ceasefire negotiations point man and Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh with the more “hardline” Yahya Sinwar was also a telltale sign, according to the pundit, that “no deal will occur soon.”

    Viz.:

Quote "The new proposal meets Netanyahu's conditions and aligns with them, particularly his refusal of a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and his insistence on continuing the occupation of the Netzarim Junction (which separates the north and south of the Gaza Strip), the Rafah crossing, and the Philadelphi Corridor [a strip of territory separating Egypt from Gaza, ed.]," read the statement by Hamas on Sunday.

That's an attempt to negotiate. Not going to happen. You have known this for almost a year now. There won't be any Likud-based entity. Chances for survival of an Israeli rump state are probably along the lines of severely-reduced borders and a very different legal system with international oversight. This is an "if".

If not, then, it's a lot of dust to clean, but people who work properly are very effective at such things.

BREAKING: Democrats Deny Request for Palestinian Voice on Their Convention Stage
Watch Mehdi’s exclusive roundtable in Chicago with Uncommitted activists and Democratic politicians discussing Gaza and double standards.

    TEAM ZETEO AND MEHDI HASAN

CHICAGO – In this special episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’, we’re at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, around the corner from the United Center, at the Palestinian-American owned OUD Coffee and Cafe. Mehdi is joined in this exclusive interview with prominent voices from the Uncommitted Movement – and just moments after it was revealed that the DNC would not be allowing a Palestinian to speak at the convention.

Joining ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ are co-chair of the Uncommitted Movement Layla Elabed, who briefly spoke with Vice President Harris recently; former U.S. Representative from Michigan Andy Levin, a progressive, Jewish critic of Israel; and Georgia State Representative Ruwa Romman, the first Muslim-American woman, and first Palestinian-American to be elected to the state’s House of Representatives.

Just minutes before this recording began, the panel got word that the DNC officially confirmed a Palestinian speaker would not be brought to speak on stage at the convention on Thursday, despite officials suggesting to the movement earlier that it could happen. The DNC had gone so far as shortlisting potential speakers, according to unnamed members of the movement who spoke to Zeteo.

“I really thought I could take something back after this week,” Romman said. “And now I don’t know what I’m going to say to [my community].” Romman was the Palestinian-American who most likely would have been the speaker on stage Thursday evening.

The Uncommitted Movement has been a prominent anti-war, pro-Palestinian coalition that’s secured more than 700,000 votes during the Democratic Party primaries, including more than 100,000 in the swing state of Michigan alone. It has thirty delegates from 8 states here at the DNC.

So, how does the movement feel after the DNC denied a Palestinian voice a spot on the convention stage, especially after they featured the parents of an Israeli-American hostage in Gaza on stage Wednesday night? Do members believe they’ve made headway with the Democratic party in recent months, what’s been happening behind-the-scenes? And, the big questions, what happens next – and what’s the plan for November?

Hussein Haridi, a former Egyptian assistant foreign minister, highlighted the urgency of securing a ceasefire due to Israel's economic losses and the suffering of Palestinians. He believes the Biden administration is pushing for a deal to gain support from American public opinion and to prevent further escalation involving Iran and Hezbollah. Haridi emphasized that a ceasefire is in the interest of all parties involved.

A group of American doctors who treated patients in Gaza held a press conference in Chicago on Tuesday to describe the suffering they saw among Palestinians injured and killed in Israel’s war on the territory.
The press conference, taking place during the Democratic National Convention, was organized by the Uncommitted National Movement, which is pressuring Democrats for an end to blanket U.S. support for Israel. Among those who spoke was Dr. Ahmed Yousaf, who returned from Gaza just weeks earlier. “When we got to the hospital, everything I saw on TikTok and Instagram and all the television, all the stuff that we had in alternative media … it was 100 times worse than I could have ever imagined,” he said.
