As a non-American, I am not amused by a situation that I see coming since 2020, namely that this election will be the last for these future Disunited States... A fate that will impact the entire West and the financial system...
There will not even be popcorn to watch the big show, it will be too expensive, non-existent or maybe crammed to burn somewhere by angry farmers.
No, there is nothing fun in the near future and for nobody...

I hope that, and am now pretty much expecting that, the Bankster controlled debt-money system, currently based on the US Dollar (previously on the British Pound) does, and will, collapse. It is driven by and for the primary benefit of some evil masters.

I am hopeful that better monetary systems are in the works, and will arise soon enough that most people make it through the crisis (as has apparently already happened in Russia, give or take some rather large details of which I am rather ill-informed.)

Money, energy, information, computing, industry, science, medicine, education, transportation, entertainment, ... and so forth all changed dramatically between the 1930's and the 1960's. Imagine even more dramatic changes, at an even faster pace.

If, as I suspect, it's true that some of the alien bastards who have lorded over us for millennia have left our solar system, then there may be an even more profound shift afoot, reorganizing our civilization at the core levels, in more humane ways. But if that's so, then no doubt the minions of these departed overlords who remain here are getting increasingly desperate.

We live in interesting times.

I'm actually looking forward to the transition ... bring it on. But I've been preparing my mind and my circumstances for this for a long time. My resources are modest; my body is old; and my luck is only finite. So I am certainly not invulnerable. But I'll give it the best I've got.

There is so much about our civilization that is so screwed up ... I am so ready for a (more or less, whatever) controlled demolition, and it seems that some beings (humans and perhaps others) have been doing their best to get us through these times as best they can, and improve our civilization on the other side. We won't all make it. Heck, we're already losing humans every day due to the broken wars, food, health, immigration, and other problems. It will likely get dramatically more challenging, perhaps soon.

For most of us (not those in the Ukraine, the eastern Mediterranean, and some other places), this is, and may well continue to be for the most part, more a war for the hearts, minds and souls, than it is a plain old war of physical death and destruction.

This is not the proper thread for what I am about to post here ... I should really start a different thread for this (a thread that few would read, I'm sure). So I will write here in sufficiently obtuse terms that none but those who already agree with me (if any such others exist, my condolences of you are one such) will connect with my words.

When present day physicists study a given sample of material substance in isolation, they observe that the elements (particles, atoms, ...) of that substance "bounce around more rapidly" the hotter the substance is. They term that random looking "bouncing around" as disorder, aka "entropy", and they observe (state) that cooler samples have less of that "entropy", i.e. in their terms, more "order". They go on to formulate "Laws of Thermodynamics", that observe that in the closed, isolated conditions they create in their labs, such entropy (lack of stability) increases to some limit, which limit depends on the material and such. In other words, their samples get warmer until they don't get any warmer. (Do they always store their samples in a closet or drawer cooler than their testing room?)

These physicists have stolen/borrowed/repurposed the word "order":

• from meaning some overall structure or arrangement or activity that is evident "in the large", but not evident in the individual elements or moments in time that form that ordering,
  
• to referring to the inverse of temperature, as measured by their mercury thermometer or (more recently) infrared wavelength sensor.

This leaves all our main stream teachings, philosophies and religions, and even alternative stream teachings such as in Clif's commentary above, struggling to explain all the structured order, from hydrogen atoms to blades of grass to flocks of birds to Beethoven's 9th Symphony to human civilizations to intergalactic energy flows, that we observe in the universe. If sh*t forever falls apart (entropy, aka random vibrations manifesting heat, forever increases to a limit), then where did all this "order" come from?

We end up postulating some God or Gods or (as Clif does here) Big Consciousness or (as physicists nowadays do) Big Bang to create some nearly infinite order, so that even now, after all the thermodynamic decay into disorder, there's still a lot of structure remaining.

Such an abuse of language, this reuse/misuse of the word "order", confusing its reference to "structure" with "a lower reading on a mercury thermometer" ranks up there in my mind with the misuse of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle or Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem, taking some specific rather esoteric finding or observation application to some particular discipline of mathematics or physics and applying it literally, as if the words "order", "certainty", and "completeness" meant the same thing in general discourse as they do in these narrow disciplines, has annoyed me incessantly for over a half century.

Beethoven did not create the wood, steel and ivory that made the piano that you heard playing in his Symphony, nor did he conceive from his own loins the person whose hands played that piano, nor anything like that. If that piano and those hands were not already there, in the more recent time and place of that playing that you heard, no amount of genius or labor on Beethoven's part, some 200 years ago, could or would have manifest them.

What we miss, in our popular philosophy, religions and conventional physics, is that "order" (the "rich, varied and complexly entangled and nested dynamic structures" sort not the "lower reading on a mercury thermometer of an isolated lab sample" sort) arises naturally, in self-organizing, self-perpetuating forms.

One need only postulate (1) an æther with sufficiently interesting dynamic properties and (2) a sufficient amount of time, and (3) recognize that self-organizing, self-perpetuating structures will inevitably form, layered upon the elements, atoms, acts (Susanne Langer's term), organs, beings, ... formed thusly already and voilà, behold our present day universe.

I return this thread to its regularly scheduled programming. Sorry, Clif. You're my kind of smart old computer geek and I listen to everything I find from you, but your skill at coming across as an expert sometimes exceeds the variety of subjects in which you truly are an innovative expert (in my less than expert view).

Years ago, I noticed or observed that "life" reverses or ignores that law of entropy. And that at the mitochondrial level, exhibits over-unity energy generation.
As Nick Lane has stated in his thesis, science doesn't really know how to define or explain life.

Your comment, Paul, reminds me of those observations.

Recently James Corbett I think posted about a project where a person went about totally creating a sandwich. We dismiss all the various inputs that had to be for a sandwich... the farmer, the cheese maker, the living animal who was grown for meat, the supply chain etc. It was a sandwich that from scratch took a LONG time and a lot of funds and energy to produce. One of the ways that "something" is trying to create entropy IMO is by destroying all the links in the chain of custody of civilization.

I think about how I really LOVE our complex interacting world of parts that seem to self assemble into a beautiful abundance. IMO this "process" comes from a kind of sentience of WHOLE which can guide us to create a web of LIFE in which various aspects cooperate.

IMO it is this NATURAL self organizing(leading to more elegant insights and activities) that SOME malevolent FORCE is trying to take down.

When I was a child, I still recall the milkman and the glass bottles returned, the knife sharpener who came, the farmer who made the rounds with produce. I remember a seamstress who made my beautiful prom dress. There were so many parts THEN but on a local scale.

People need bodies and seek HEALTH because if we are sick, we die too soon and nonfunctional for a life. Another thing that I have learned over my life is that MANY different "remedies" work on many different people. NO one diet, etc. is needed. NOT ONE of the hard and fast RULES are true. The PERSON makes the cure.

This means to me that the OBSERVER effect and the BELIEF is a key. IF I believe I MUST have some THING to live, I may fight tooth and nail for that. IF I think I can adapt to anything and am the SOURCE of my experience, I cannot be captured to be the implementation of NONSENSE!!

I always thought the Luddites were kindred to me in that machines took people from the land and put them into a kind of slavery. However, SOME aspects of the WHOLE are in need of machines.

The main take away form my thoughts is that perhaps we are beings who need disaster in our face to learn a BASIC lesson?

Chère Vache Pythonienne, your description of the “higher orders” gel quite well with the “dissipative structure” ideas Ilya Prigogine got his Physics (?) Nobel Prize for in the 70s. As you know of course.

But I wonder: if the “higher orders” arise from “extreme conditions” at the rim of the entropy world but still within it, would logic then not command to state that the higher order (of “information”, is it not?) is part of the entropy world and, as such, just a special case of it? After all, giant plasma structures like stars are birthed and thrive within a “universe” that is not itself a plasma structure or is it? (And in this last case, would it not have to be called verrrry highly “highly-order”-ed?)
