Two US Army soldiers and one civilian interpreter were killed in an attack in Syria on Saturday, according to the Pentagon, while CENTCOM has blamed an ambush by a lone ISIL gunman in Syria.

Three others were wounded in the attack, Sean Parnell, chief spokesman for the Pentagon, said in a statement on X, according to the CNN.

“The attack occurred as the soldiers were conducting a key leader engagement. Their mission was in support of on-going counter-ISIS / counter-terrorism operations in the region,” Parnell wrote, adding that the names of those killed were being withheld until next of kin are notified.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the attacker was killed by partner forces.

Having missed initial reports of the targeting of a Hanukah festival in Australia, here is the manner of its interruption:

Australian media and community sources have identified the man who confronted a gunman during the recent shooting in Sydney as Ahmad Al Ahmad, a forty-three-year-old Muslim father of two whose actions helped halt the attack and prevent further bloodshed, Roya News reported.

Sources within the Islamic community in Australia said Al Ahmad intervened during the shooting, which appeared to target a Jewish Hanukkah event, after witnessing the attack while passing through the area. Despite having no prior experience with firearms, he rushed toward the gunman and managed to seize the weapon, according to widely shared video footage.

Dr. Jamal Rifi, a prominent figure in the Islamic community, confirmed the man’s identity, saying, “The person who stopped the attacker from continuing the shooting is a Muslim named Ahmad.”

Local reports revealed that Al Ahmad owns a fruit shop in the Sutherland area of Sydney. He was injured during the confrontation and was shot twice, according to his cousin, Mustafa, who said he was scheduled to undergo surgery later that night.

Australian Prime Minister expressed astonishment at the footage, describing it as “the most extraordinary scene I have witnessed in my life.” He praised Al Ahmad’s courage, saying the man advanced toward an armed attacker and risked his life to save countless others, adding that many people were alive because of his actions.

A new round of coming back for more:

The ISIL terrorist group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack targeting forces affiliated with Abu Mohammad al-Jolani on the outskirts of Idlib, northwestern Syria, according to regional media reports.

According to a media outlet affiliated with the ISIL terrorist organization, announced that its militants carried out an attack against Jolani-affiliated forces on the Maarrat al-Numan road in the outskirts of Syria’s Idlib province.

The report said the attack resulted in the killing of four members of the targeted forces and the wounding of another. It claimed that the attackers managed to withdraw safely and return to their positions following the operation.

Earlier on Sunday, Syria’s Interior Ministry confirmed that at least four members of forces affiliated with the Jolani regime were killed in an armed attack in the city of Maarrat al-Numan, located in the southern countryside of Idlib.

The ministry said security forces have launched search and sweep operations in the area to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The incident comes amid continued armed clashes and internal tensions in Syria, which have persisted since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s government, despite ongoing security operations in several regions.

At least something has persisted. Aside from the people that were in prison, I'm not sure how many are truly grateful the former Syria is gone.

Donald Trump once again openly boasts that Miriam Adelson gave his campaign “directly and indirectly” $250 million, then jokes that it “is not what it used to be.” That alone is a remarkable public admission of donor dominance at the highest level of state power.

But it gets worse.

It was not Donald Trump who first raised the idea of “four more years.” It was Miriam Adelson.

On stage, Adelson tells the room that she spoke directly with Alan Dershowitz, who explained to her “the legal thing about four more years.” She then turns to Trump and says: “I agree with you so we can do it. Think about it.” The crowd immediately begins chanting “Four more years.”

Yes, Alan Dershowitz is physically present at this event. This is the same Dershowitz who served as Jeffrey Epstein’s defense attorney and was later accused by Virginia Giuffre of sexual misconduct connected to Epstein. Regardless, he is being invoked here as the legal authority for extending a presidency beyond constitutional limits.

Trump casually recounts her unfettered access to him, describing how her late husband Sheldon Adelson had near on-demand access to the Oval Office. Trump is explicit about Sheldon’s priorities, saying that despite being an American citizen, “That’s all he really fought for… he just wanted to take care of Israel.”

That alone should stop people cold. Western audiences should not normalize

Intense fighting has erupted in Syria’s southern province of Sweida between Druze forces and armed elements affiliated with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies, leaving several individuals wounded, report say.

The clashes broke out between so-called Druze National Guard forces led by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, a Druze religious leader, and HTS forces affiliated with former al-Qaeda commander and the Arab country’s de facto president Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, al-Marsad news website reported, according to Press TV.

The Druze are using heavy weapons and mortars.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. has drafted a 32-page reconstruction blueprint for Gaza, called “Project Sunrise,” aimed at transforming the destroyed enclave into a high-tech coastal metropolis.

According to the WSJ, the plan was developed over the past 45 days by a team led by Ivanka's Twink and Trump's real estate agent, with involvement from senior White House aide Josh Gruenbaum, input from Israeli officials, and consultations with private-sector contractors.

The proposal, circulated as a “sensitive but unclassified” PowerPoint presentation, has already been shown to prospective donor governments, including wealthy Gulf states, Turkey, and Egypt, U.S. officials told the Journal.

The plan envisions moving Gaza’s population “from tents to penthouses” and “from poverty to prosperity,” but notably:
• It does not specify where Gaza’s ~2 million displaced residents would live during reconstruction
• It does not name which countries or companies would ultimately fund the project
• It assumes a post-war political and security environment that U.S. officials themselves say may never materialize

The total projected cost is $112.1 billion over 10 years, with the United States positioned as an “anchor” backer, committing to roughly 20% of total costs through grants and debt guarantees.

The WSJ reports that Project Sunrise explicitly reimagines Gaza as a “digitally-driven smart city,” with tech-centric governance at its core, not just reconstruction.

According to the draft presentation, the plan prioritizes:
• Modern telecom and satellite systems
• Secure digital identity and “trust frameworks”
• Shared digital platforms for payments, data exchange, signatures, and notifications
• Smart-city services spanning utilities, transportation, mobility, and urban management
• A centralized Chief Digital Office to set standards and guide policymaking

This is a permanent, full digital governance model, designed before basic questions, like where Gaza’s displaced population would live during rebuilding, are answered.

U.S. officials told the Journal the plan depends entirely on Hamas “demilitarizing and decommissioning all weapons and tunnels,” a condition highlighted in bold red on the proposal’s second page. Yet the smart-city architecture is already mapped in detail.

Political control and digital infrastructure are being designed in parallel, even as U.S. officials privately doubt the security conditions will ever exist to implement the plan.

The Executive Summary of Project Sunrise

At the very top (highlighted in red) the plan states that all reconstruction is contingent on Hamas “demilitarizing and decommissioning all weapons and tunnels.”

The document frames Gaza’s devastation not as a humanitarian catastrophe, but as an “opportunity” to create a gateway of prosperity and a global model of renewal, positioning Gaza as a commercial corridor connecting the Middle East, Africa, and beyond.

Key financial facts outlined in the summary:
• $4.2 billion per year in grants
• $1.5 billion per year in sovereign debt guarantees
• Sustained over 10 years, covering humanitarian aid, security, cleanup, and reconstruction
• Gaza is expected to self-fund remaining reconstruction and repay debt

In other words, humanitarian aid is paired from the outset with long-term debt obligations, sovereign guarantees, and donor returns, what the plan itself calls “value creation for both citizens and donors.”

This slide shows how Project Sunrise restructures Gaza geographically.

Reconstruction is phased and directional, beginning in the south (Rafah and Khan Younis) and only later moving north toward central camps and Gaza City. Each phase is conditional: every zone must be cleared of rubble, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and tunnels before permanent housing or infrastructure can be rebuilt.

The sequencing is laid out clearly:
• Phase 1A / 1B: Rafah & Khan Younis (City 1 / City 2)
• Phase 2A / 2B: Expanded southern zones
• Phase 3: “Center Camps”
• Phase 4: Gaza City (last)

This mirrors earlier reports of a 20+ year roadmap beginning with clearance operations, temporary shelters, and field hospitals, only later transitioning to permanent housing, utilities, and commercial infrastructure.

What’s critical here is who controls the order of return. The plan does not assume immediate reconstruction across Gaza.

• $1 billion in commercial zones, offices, malls, and business districts

This illustrates planned construction of a new administrative capital, modeled as a high-density, master-planned urban core.

Reconstruction begins in Rafah first, before Gaza City or central camps. That means governance, population concentration, and economic activity are intentionally re-centered in the south, while northern Gaza remains last in line.

“New Rafah” is framed as humanitarian uplift, but in practice it functions as population reorganization under donor financing, security conditionality, and long-term debt.

So, the USA will use debt (borrow money) to finance the reconstruction of Gaza, and then after 20 years, Gazans must pay back the money, with interest? And Israel, who destroyed Gaza, does not have to contribute anything (but will probably get lucrative contracts)? And will the USA guarantee that Israel will stop the compulsion to destroy, kill, throw in prison to torture? And is anyone going to stop Israel from stealing land in the West Bank? And Gazans have no say at all in this? And will Gazans be free to travel, have a harbour or small airport? And are they going to be building all those mosques or are they gaslighting us? No plan for churches in the region that had the oldest church in the region? And what about the church that is still standing?

Other than the above, it is not a bad plan ... to build a city for the future. I think we can do better than those soulless concrete and glass highrises shown in the pictures. China has being buiding some very imaginative high rises, incorporating functional green spaces in very imaginative ways, but other countries are doing the same.
