We are deeply concerned by this morning’s reports that a federal law enforcement operation in Minneapolis resulted in the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by federal agents. According to local officials, the man was legally armed, a firearm was recovered at the scene, and he is believed to have been a lawful gun owner and permit to carry holder.

Many critical facts remain unknown.

We do not yet have an independent account of what initiated the encounter or what triggered the use of deadly force. Despite widespread speculation regarding intent, there has been no evidence produced indicating an intent to harm the officers. We are calling for a full and transparent investigation by both state and federal authorities.

Every peaceable Minnesotan has the right to keep and bear arms—including while attending protests, acting as observers, or exercising their First Amendment rights. These rights do not disappear when someone is lawfully armed, and they must be respected and protected at all times.

Today, Veterans For Responsible Leadership mourns the killing of Alex Pretti, a Minnesota resident, U.S. citizen, and healthcare professional who served veterans through his work as a nurse with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Pretti dedicated his life to caring for others — including those who once wore this nation’s uniform — and his death at the hands of federal immigration agents is a tragedy that should never have occurred.

This incident highlights a deeply disturbing trend: the misuse of ICE agents as a de-facto paramilitary or secret police force operating inside American communities. These agents are being deployed without sufficient training, transparency, or coordination with local authorities, creating fear rather than safety. It is a betrayal of American values and constitutional norms.

We understand the anger and grief this has sparked in Minnesota and beyond. Those emotions are real and justified. But we urge calm. Violence and chaos only deepen the harm. The path forward is peaceful protest, civic action, and sustained public pressure — the very tools that have strengthened this democracy for generations.

We call on Americans to contact their Members of Congress and demand accountability, oversight, and immediate reform of federal enforcement practices that endanger civilian lives. Federal power must never be used to terrorize the people it exists to serve.

As veterans, we swore an oath to defend the Constitution — not a political agenda, not fear, and not unchecked authority. We honor Alex Pretti’s service by demanding a country worthy of it.

🚨 NEW: Visual analysis of the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis

1. At 0:57 and 1:05 in this video, a federal agent sprayed Alex Pretti with a chemical irritant — twice.

2. At 2:01 in this video, at least four agents were holding Pretti down when an officer moves his hand to his own holster to pull out his gun.

3. Ten gunshots are heard in the video.

4. Alex Pretti was lying still on the ground when federal agent(s) fired at least an additional four shots.

5. It took 26 seconds after all those shots had been fired before a single federal agent went up to the man they had just shot.

BREAKING: A witness who was just 5 feet from Alex Pretti filed an affidavit depicting what she saw.

She says he didn’t touch any of the officers and didn’t appear to be resisting. He was merely helping a woman who had been pepper-sprayed.

She’s is terrified that ICE is looking for her, saying they are lying and she doesn’t know what they will do to her if they find her.

There is one week left to prevent their renewed funding, and maybe salvage the money for something useful, or the government will shut down.

Minnesota is going in with their own Guard and this will be really tense tomorrow. They may perhaps eject the federal scum.

This program and the platform it rode in on are to be erased.

That takes time, and the damage it may cause on the spur of the moment is incalculable. I'm not joking by saying a level of hatred has been achieved here, and it has nothing to do with me, it's rather widespread. Just getting more serious until it stops.

Another sleight-of-hand at play.

This morning there is a Restraining Order, but it only pertains to tampering with the evidence.

A real one was passed on the 16th saying you cannot use force etc. on protestors, and on the 21st it was overturned in an 8th Circuit Court of Appeals saying agents could not defend themselves, or, that's what the ICE lawyers said and the judge took it. So that is foot right in mouth.

The government is practically guaranteed to shut down because they insist on stealing more money on top of what they already stole.
