5 Ways Birds Stay Warm When Temperatures Drop



When winter settles in, the once-bustling birdlife quiets down. The early morning songs fade, and the evening skies grow still. Yet, despite the chill, birds have a remarkable set of tricks that help them stay snug through the coldest months.



Soaking Up the Sun

Just like people, birds take advantage of sunshine. On bright winter days, they turn their feathers toward the light, absorbing warmth and storing a little extra heat before the cold night returns.

Feathery Insulation



Beneath the outer layer of sleek feathers lies a soft, fluffy coat of down. This down traps warm air close to a bird’s body, acting much like a thermal jacket. By puffing up their feathers, birds increase the insulating air space, making them look round and fluffy. To prevent heat loss, they often tuck their beaks and legs into their feathers while resting.

Fueling Up

Winter is a constant hunt for energy. Birds spend daylight hours searching for calorie-dense foods rich in fat and protein—vital fuel that keeps them alive through chilly nights. Some, like chickadees, eat more than a third of their body weight each day just to maintain warmth. They often feed heavily before sunset or before an incoming storm to build up these energy reserves.



“Mini-Hibernation” and Shivering

Certain bird species can enter a mild state of torpor, lowering their body temperature, heart rate, and metabolism to save energy overnight. When morning arrives, they generate heat by shivering—tiny muscle contractions that help restore body warmth. They will also shiver during the day to warm up if necessary.

Strength in Numbers



Many small (and larger) birds survive the season by roosting (aka cuddling) together. They crowd into sheltered spaces—tree holes, birdhouses, or thick shrubs—sharing their collective body heat. Chickadees, finches, bluebirds, and nuthatches are among the many species that rely on these cozy communal gatherings to make it through the winter nights.

How are the designs done? Are they mostly copies of actual prey insects? Do fish eventually stop going for designs, like do they learn what’s fake/dangerous, or are advised though RSheldrake’s Morphic Resonance? How effective are novel fake insect designs?


Other question, are FPV drones used, either for visual recon or even to dip/multi-dip a fly near a seen lunker? If not in a survival situation, might not be sporting, but I’m still curious.

In the opening bit of the first vid, he demonstrates that when launched with a dead-centre strike on the cue ball, the object/target ball will bounce sharper with a harder rail hit, and wider/longer/looser with a lesser speed one.

I play a fair amount of pool, all now at one local kareoke poolhall, and my favourite game is bank everything. League rules, with agreed other modified rules like no fowls and no primary soft cushions, kicks count as a bank, and don’t lose the 8 ball (grab it and spot it, whether from the floor or near an errant pocket incipient loss). I call this game Gary’s same game, after the proprietor who graces me with always same, when he has free time.

I’ve watched league and tournament play, lots of excellent regular shots, way better than I can do. But when they’re in a bind, crowded and blocked, they rarely see kick or bank solutions. I have quit voicing suggestions, as that used to ALWAYS bother them. And these guys were playing for a pot or a trip to Vegas lol.

Not saying that I’m better, because I lose most of the time. I play for fun, as I often say, and I also often yell “I’m having more fun than you!” if I happen to be falling behind.

Banking on the regular squarish table is a bouquet of eloquent choices.

A few years ago, my fav was the long bank side. I got it up to about 50% reliability back then, but now it’s more like 15-20% for lack of practice. Military calls practice “currency”.

Since then, fav has gone to 5 bank (incl 2 longs), to long 2 bank (kitty corner, side first, that one needs just a slight touch of negative English). Current fav is the long bank kick to long bank, or the cross side easier version. Won a game with the long one years ago, against a friend RIP, and recently got back to trying that again.

New Volatile Sunspot Turns Toward Earth

The Sun has erupted in a relentless barrage of powerful solar flares over the past 24 hours, firing off at least 18 M-class flares and three X-class flares, including an X8.3 eruption — the strongest solar flare of 2026 so far. Solar flares are ranked by strength from A, B and C up to M and X, with each letter representing a tenfold increase in energy — meaning X-class flares are the most powerful explosions the Sun can produce.

Agree, this is very interesting. They both seem credible imo.

New to me, was the correlation to Bigfoot, and the occurance of healing.

Especially the healing, including the Mexican lady who they said performed sort of magical surgery on each of them (Don and Carla).

I take a step back though, and wonder if any or all of the physical healings were accompanied or preceded my soul healing. In my understanding, call it an opinion if you wish, the vitality of our body is a reflection of our spiritual health in the chakra area indicated.

Related, Iridology is one window into our physical health. Then connecting whatever indicated organ with a chakra/consciousness-centre, can help us to fix ourselves. In order, from bottom to top, as I learned it:
