    the late evening of the infamous 9/11 we were driving past mt etna..so, this was 2001, as far back as that.. it was spewing largish chunks of live coal, some as big as watermellons, some smaller.. means it's not been quite dormant... a spectacular site this was - red chunks of live coal against the dimness of the night..not a soul got excersized and the locals later told us it was not unusual..i thought it meritted evacuation and was expecting to see that...

    Nothing on the news here about it... that doesn't mean that it hasn't happened... the Italian volcanoes blow quite often and the news has other internal things to report on (like the 400*+ Lombardy mayors dimonstrating against the gov't at Milan, the region's seat, because they have no money...). Sorry, I can't help, but if I hear something, I'll definately post it.
