There really should be no confusion about this; simultaneously cooperating with the U.S. on military matters and strengthening ties with Russia and other BRICS nations is a brilliant diplomatic and geopolitical move. It bolsters their national security, tightens up their sovereignty and gives their economic world standing a huge boost. It is a win for the USA, a win for BRICS, and an enormous win for Indonesia.

It appears to me that you were hoping for your Team BRICS to be cheered at the podium while vanquishing Team USA into obscurity. Any win for Team Trump would be considered messy when your heart is so deeply rooted in partisanship.

Yes US is seeking permission to us Indonesia’s air space and Indonesia is now a full BRICS member.

However Indonesia has denied allowing US to use it’s airspace, please see here for further details.

Based on reports from April 2026, Indonesia has not denied the U.S. permission to fly over its country, but has clarified that discussions regarding "blanket overflight access" for U.S. military aircraft are still in the preliminary stage. Defense Ministry official Rico Ricardo Sirait said in a statement on Monday that his decision is not final and remains under discussion. He also urged the public "not to be misled by circulating information." He also said that his decision must benefit the public, while respecting national sovereignty.

My post aimed to serve two purposes: first, to explain why it was smart for Indonesian leadership to pursue both the BRICS agreement and the potential granting of US flyover privileges; and second, to suggest that, given your strong anti-Trump stance, it allowed the situation to appear "messy" (your word) to you. Relationships are messy, whether personal or between countries!

Westerners do not realize the damage they do to the world because they have a deep belief that Africans especially but also other non-European people are inferior, savages, etc. and that being poor is their own fault! Western-style democracy and capitalism can be deeply exploitative and clash horribly with different beliefs and cultures, to the detriment of the 'other'. China came up with the idea that especially developing nations should have an alternative, could find a way out of the poverty trap, could realize their potential, etc. by building an alternative global economic and development path that does not use sanctions, does not impose harsh conditions that destroy social support programmes to repay debt and interest, respects the sovereignty of each country, and frees countries from the dollar trap. Sovereignty means that each country makes its own choices and there is no punishment or threats or bans, so Modi can go to India and fawn all over Netanyahu, Indonesia can make deals with BRICS and the US, etc.

Why offer an alternative to the dollar? Because the US is a bully ... sanctions, threats, demands that ignore sovereignty, regime change, invasions ... The US tends to fund instead of investing in development. It is the old story of give a man a fish ... The US hands out fish and then 'owns' the country. Trump is the worst of the US, on steroids. Not all American administrations have done no good. USAID was shut down because it was being used mostly for regime change etc., but it was still running programmes based on the philosophy of upliftment rather than charity.

Of course, developing countries can have self-serving leaders and corrupt politicians, and sometimes 'what the heck' leaders emerge, like Trump. (Have a look at what is happening in Uganda where the head of the army is the son of the president ... No lessons learned after Idi Amin?!)

BRICS does have an unspoken way of dealing with member states that 'go completely rogue' ... no threats or official sanctions or pompous reprimands, but the special deals dry up, etc. Modi of India visited and fawned all over Israel; Israel and the US launched an illegal war of aggression against Iran; the Strait of Hormuz was closed by the war and its consequences; India turned to Russia to buy oil, which Russia sold but not at the special price offered to BRICS members ...
