Researchers at Nanjing University have created a new way to make clean hydrogen directly from seawater using sunlight.
They built a special material (cobalt phosphide on carbon nitride) that can sit in seawater. When sunlight hits it, it splits water into hydrogen and oxygen—no electricity, no filters, and no extra equipment needed.
Even better, the natural salt in seawater actually improves performance by about 15%, so there’s no need to remove salt first.
The system ran successfully for 1,000 hours outdoors. Scientists estimate that a 1 km² setup could produce about 4,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
In short: it’s a simpler, cheaper way to make clean fuel directly from the ocean using sunlight.
