Extricating Myself From Zionism’s Toxic Grip

I’ve repeatedly been asked why I abandoned Zionism – a movement I now see as racist, dishonest, violent, and dangerous – when so many other Jewish Boomers stayed with it. What follows is my attempt to put myself “on the couch” and offer a halfway decent answer.

My Zionist Roots
I was born when Israel was less than a decade old. Among Zionists, the story of a “Jewish State” surrounded by hostile “Arabs” (or “Ay‑rabs”) who “hated Jews for being Jews” and whom “we” defeated “against all odds” was widely considered a modern miracle.

Decades later, I’d realize I was immersed in Zionist bull**** (ZBS) throughout my Wonder Years. In the North Jersey Jewish community of my childhood, we were bathed in Zionism practically from birth. We’re talking full immersion. My parents were Zionists. Our Orthodox congregation was Zionist. From what I recall as a kid, just about every Jewish adult I knew was (you guessed it) a Zionist.

If someone in our Jewish community was anti‑Zionist, they certainly didn’t make it public. Criticism of Israel from Jews was simply not something we heard.

In fact, nothing we read or were told contradicted the story of a “land without people for a people without a land,” of how “Jews made the desert bloom,” and that the few “Arabs” who lived there “left their homes voluntarily” because their “leaders” promised they’d come back after “Jews were driven into the sea.” All of that land was supposedly ours anyway because “G‑d promised Israel to the Jews” – and thank G‑d almighty for Israel, because with antisemites lurking beyond every corner, the “Jewish State” was our insurance policy against a “second Holocaust.”

As a great‑nephew of Holocaust victims and survivors, that last point really hit home with me. When, as a small child, you learn that a sizable chunk of your family was murdered and you’re told that “our people” have withstood attempts throughout recorded history to wipe us off the face of the earth, you tend to take “Never again” to heart.

From what I recall as a boy, I never had a single conversation with a Palestinian or even a Palestinian ally. I was hermetically sealed inside a Zionist bubble, carrying a story spun from my family’s very real suffering in the Holocaust. Much later, I’d learn that the Israel‑related part of that story was, to put it mildly, too good to be true.

My Anti‑Zionist Leanings
When it comes to Palestine-Israel, it’s been said that many hardcore Zionists have closed minds and hardened hearts. I was an ardent young defender of Israel, but I was missing those two “essentials” that might have made Zionism stick for life.

In my bar mitzvah photo, my mouth is closed because I was hiding buck teeth. I also had big ears and a lisp. I was short and underweight for my age. I was mocked and sometimes pushed around. That gave me a tendency to be, as one of my brothers put it, “for the underdog.” I think it also gave me a deep well of compassion.

In a version of “white flight,” our family moved from what was fast becoming a majority‑nonwhite neighborhood to one just a bike ride away that was lily white and deeply racist. On the other side of the viaduct, where we used to live, I saw poverty and everything that came with it. In my young mind, it felt profoundly unfair to have immutable characteristics condemn a people to “othering” for life.

Two icons of the Civil Rights Movement – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammad Ali – were early heroes of mine. Even as a kid, I understood exactly what they were fighting for and, unlike many whites in my community, I had no doubt they were on the right side of history.

My dad was a Pearl Harbor survivor and classic “Greatest Generation” tough guy from the streets of Paterson. He taught his five sons how to defend themselves. Like my dad, I became a fighter. Living in Los Angeles as a college student, I had an amateur boxing match against a muscle‑bound surfer.

Before the bout, my opponent looked at skinny me across the ring with a smirk that said I’d be easy to knock down. When the bell rang, I walked straight over and smacked him across the face. I ended up winning a lopsided three‑round decision and “retired” undefeated as an amateur boxer with a lifetime 1‑0 record. An impulse to fight bullies never left me, and eventually it shifted to the way I saw Israel and the Palestinians.

As a young sports junkie, I was a voracious reader of sports pages. From there, I became an avid reader and news junkie, which put me on the path to discovering the reality of Palestine‑Israel.

Neither of my parents finished high school, but they insisted I get a good college education. More than anything, college taught me how to think. Thanks to the good people of California who funded public universities, my education taught me how to find quality information, ask the right questions, and make up my own mind.

That skinny little boy with buck teeth grew up to be strong and confident, with a passion for knowledge and a fierce interest in defending oppressed people – especially ghettoized and ethnically cleansed people, like my own family members.

As an adult, I had become the wrong person to tell to look the other way at injustice or keep quiet – especially when it came to what Israel was doing to Palestinians.

My Zionist Swan Song
When the First Intifada began in the late 1980s, I still identified as a Zionist, but something had shifted. Coverage of the occupation and Israeli oppression was ramping up in major media, including The New York Times, which I read every day, and I was paying attention. I began seeing distressing reports of Palestinian deaths and of life under what amounted to martial law.

For the first time in my life, I was reading about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, about the human beings Israel had turned into refugees, and about the actual roots of the so‑called “conflict” – a term I would later intensely dislike.

The last time I recall being a Zionist was around age 35, when Alan Dershowitz’s bestseller “Chutzpah” came out. This was decades before the now‑infamous Harvard Law professor emeritus became the disgraced figure he is today. I tore through “Chutzpah” and thought Dershowitz was the best defender of the Jewish people ever.

Ironically, years later, he became a Facebook friend – and then quickly “unfriended” me, presumably after one look at my anti‑Zionist posts.

Not long after reading “Chutzpah,” I went non‑Zionist. Once I understood that I’d been fed myths, distortions, and outright falsehoods – and kept in a Zionist bubble – throughout my childhood, I became intensely interested in finally learning the other side of the story.

Growing up, I had zero knowledge of the Nakba. I didn’t know Zionism was a classic settler‑colonial project, or that the so‑called “world’s most moral army” had what I would later understand as a long record of crimes against humanity.

Like other non‑racist Jews of my generation who got around to doing their own homework, the more I read, the angrier I became about how thoroughly I’d been deceived. Very quickly, I went from non‑Zionist to an anti‑Zionist opponent of a “Jewish State” built on exclusive rights for Jews and a long history of brutal oppression.

My Entrée Into Social Media
In 2007, I signed up for Facebook. Social media deserves most of the criticism it gets, but it also exposed eager learners to new people, new thinking, new ideas – and, crucially, new stories.

Through Facebook, I discovered Miko Peled, the Israeli general’s son turned peace activist and author of “The General’s Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” I discovered Ilan Pappe, the Israeli historian whose 2006 book “The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine” laid out what happened in 1948. I discovered Gideon Levy, the Haaretz columnist who has spent decades documenting what Israel does in the occupied territories.

Equally important, I began hearing directly from Palestinian writers and non‑Jewish allies across the Arab world and beyond, through Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye, Mondoweiss, +972 Magazine, and other outlets that finally opened my eyes. It was beyond enlightening.

In 2014, when Israel’s assault dubbed “Operation Protective Edge” killed more than 500 Palestinian children in Gaza, I couldn’t stay quiet. I posted my outrage on Facebook and was attacked and, at times, threatened by Zionists. But something beautiful happened: as my posts were shared, Palestinians, Muslims, and other allies of Palestinian liberation started friending me, defending me, and educating me. From them, I’ve learned so much, gained real‑world friendships I cherish, and developed a clearer sense that Palestinians themselves are leading this righteous struggle for liberation.

My Point of No Return
After I went anti‑Zionist, I never looked back. I’ve never questioned my decision to quit that movement. Zionists didn’t seem to grasp that by expecting me to keep spreading ZBS after I’d learned the truth – and by trying to shame me into silence – they were only inspiring me to speak louder.

As a person named in Hebrew for a refugee from Nazi Germany, and a family member of people who were ghettoized and ethnically cleansed for being Jewish, I’m not about to support the ghettoization and ethnic cleansing of another people for not being Jewish.

For me, “Never again” stopped being a slogan about Jews alone and became a commitment to stand against ethnic cleansing anywhere, especially when it’s done in my name.

My Take on Fellow Jewish Boomers
This is speculation, but after a lifetime among Jewish Boomers, here’s what I see:

Most – including many who call themselves “liberal Zionists” – continue to support Israel because they think that’s what “good Jews” do. They were born shortly before, or not long after, Israel’s birth and still feel bound to the “Jewish State.” They see Israelis as their “people.” They view them as part of their “tribe.”

As youngsters, many of them internalized a fear of a second Holocaust. They were also spoon‑fed images of Palestinians as eternal enemies – terrorists, savages, people who “only understand force” – rather than as human beings with history, grief, and rights of their own. When that fear is introduced early and reinforced often, it frequently sticks – regardless of IQ or degrees. Later, many went to Israel on Zionist propaganda tours that doubled down on the same myths and erased Palestinian reality. On top of that, a lot of Jewish Boomers quietly worry that if they walk away from Zionism and start speaking out, they’ll be ostracized by family, shunned at the JCC, or branded “self‑hating Jews,” so even those with doubts often stay silent.

Sadly, a sizable share of Jewish Boomers will keep backing Israel regardless of the crimes it commits in our name – even as growing numbers of legal scholars and human rights organizations describe its actions as genocidal.

Fortunately, many of their children didn’t absorb their parents’ racism. They’re a big reason I’m still optimistic.

I’m a deeply flawed human who has made plenty of mistakes, but quitting Zionism isn’t one of them. For everyone who helped nudge me in a moral direction along this long road, thank you.

I suppose it depends on what your definition of winning a war is and whether people are bending perception to reach a desired reality. I am not in favor of Trump's war in Iran, but my reality looks very different from that of many.

Iran has suffered leadership decapitation, tremendous degradation of its nuclear program, destruction of most of its military, currency collapse, and economic collapse. Most importantly, Iran has positioned itself against many of the Middle East countries. The fact that Iran launched missiles and drone strikes against Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain isolates them like never before.

Even worse for Iran's long-term outlook is that countries are actively pursuing alternative routes to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia is extending and expanding the East-West Pipeline, while the UAE is doing the same with the Fujairah Pipeline, and the Egyptians have put the Sumed pipeline at full capacity. New rail-sea links from UAE ports like Fujairah through Saudi Arabia and Jordan to Syrian and Egyptian ports are being developed, reducing reliance on Hormuz. To make matters worse, Russia has stepped up to provide oil to China, and there is much speculation that some of those orders will be permanent. There is even some discussion that China is considering purchasing oil from the USA. All these efforts will never replace the Strait of Hormuz, but collectively they will have long term devasting impact on Iran.

I understand there is a lot of sympathy for Iran, but to say that Iran has won the war before the conflict plays out seems utterly bizarre, especially when you consider the long-term consequences.

Re the bolded above - it just never stops does it - not for a second....the relentless psychological operation against Trump, even here on the forum - (yes I know there is such a thing as perfectly reasonable questioning + legitimate analysis of the Trump Administration's policies at home and abroad, but you can just feel, intuitively, when a line is crossed and 'something else' happens....that 'something else' being an adherence to a wider agenda being pushed..either knowingly or not...)

Having attended Catholic schools in Canada as a kid, I recall that all classes had to watch those 1945 films of the horrendous concentration camps conditions at the time that the Allied forces defeated Germany and liberated the camps. It was traumatic to watch. (Probably the same films shown today to kids in Israel.) We were firmly told that the nazis murdered 6 million jews.

But here's one question that has long puzzled me. Why the hatred in Europe against Jews. It started long before Hitler's Reich, and it wasn't only in Germany. In eastern Europe that hatred was quite significant, but I have no idea why. I recall some Polish folks (not Germans) stating something like 'the one thing that Hitler failed at is that he didn't kill all the Jews'. I find this absolutely abhorrent. Personally, I strongly believe that no one deserves to be attacked on the basis of their race, ethnicity or religion.

But why the hatred? Would it be from ancient rumors in Europe of Jews doing very criminal stuff, prior to WW2? (I won't list the allegations here, but it gets quite gruesome.) As far as I know these are rumors not based on evidence.

Are zionists aware that their utterly cruel genocide of Palestinians raises the perception for the rest of the world that there is/was something inherently evil within ashkenazi jews that led to the WW2 holocaust? I've seen online comments along the lines of 'Maybe Hitler was on to something'. I don't know what to believe at this point.

But one thing is for certain. Zionists aren't succeeding in promoting Israel as good and moral, on the contrary. It's as if they don't really care what the world thinks of them, or that they think they've succeeded in fooling the rest of the world, or they aren't able to think beyond their narrow racism.

This said, I need to be clear that I'm personally not placing all Jews in the criminal category, on the contrary. There are many prominent Jewish people whom I think are kind, moral, and brilliant. It's no coincidence that their common link is that they condemn Israel's crimes and oppose zionism.

The first thousand plus years since the death of Christ are, in Europe, about the spread of Christianity, driving out Paganism from Europe, and then about the spread of Islam. But by 1492, Islam was banished from Western and Central Europe and everyone was Christian. Everyone, that is, except the Jews. Every Palm Sunday and every Good Friday in Christian churches, people listened to the story of Christ's final day, about how "the Jews" demanded of the Roman official Pontius Pilate, the crucifixion of Christ. To many of the simple people of the time, "The Jews" were the killers of Jesus Christ. They were a tiny minority in Europe, but they lived in isolation.

Also, until the 16th century, Christians could not lend money, but Jews could, so if you needed a loan, you had to venture into the Jewish quarter of the city. The fact that the only relations between Jews and Christian were about financial matters, made for some very difficult relationships. Many Jews converted to Christianity, some of them becoming priests, bishops, nuns and even saints. Once they did this, they were completely accepted into society.

Then, in the late 19th century, after the theories of Darwin were circulating, and at the same time society was secularizing, the issue centered more on race then on religion. These ideas about ethnic superiority evolved into things like Nazism and the "science" of Eugenics. If you wanted to join the Nazi party, you had to provide some genealogical records to prove that you were not Jewish. Religion and belief were not the issue, it was all about your racial heritage.

"Zionists" and "Jews" are not the same thing. There are anti-Zionist Jews and there are Jews that are indifferent to Zionism. And there are lots of Christian Zionists. Of all the Zionists in the world, many more are Christian than are Jewish.

That's my 2 cent overview of the situation.

It touches the story of 'Jacob Frank (1726–1791) who was an 18th-century Polish-Jewish religious leader who declared himself the messiah and led a controversial, heretical sect known as the Frankists', where ritualistic rape of children was practised.

Following up on the above topic, here's a RT article about actual court cases on satanic ritual abuse in Israel. Evidence that the frankist ideology never disappeared entirely, it just went underground and spread worldwide. I recall the biography of a young jewish woman who lived in New York and struggled with episodes of psychosis until her memories resurfaced of sexual abuse from her father, brother and jewish male friends of her father during her childhood. (I'll have to find the title of the book and author's name.)

From Torah to trauma: A Satanic child abuse scandal blows up in Israel
There’s a coordinated silencing of victims across religious and political hierarchies

There are crimes so profound that words fail to capture them. Last week, several survivors testified to the Israeli Knesset about just such a horror.

The story broke with an investigative report published by Israel Hayom, which unearthed a long-standing pattern of ritual sexual abuse, psychological manipulation, and spiritual desecration occurring not on the margins of society but from within its most sacred institutions. Survivors speak of torment that begins in early childhood and lasts decades, often committed under the guise of religious observance. It is not just a crime of the flesh. It is a theft of the soul.

Israeli children, some as young as infants, were subjected to methodical abuse masked in religious ritual. Survivors describe ceremonies invoking biblically-vilified deities, conducted by members of observant Jewish communities. As a survivor named Noga (all of the victims’ names are changed in the report) recalled: “The gods I remember are Baal Peor and Ashtoreth... our lord Peor and our lady Ashtoreth.” (Note: All these deities are categorically condemned in the Bible).

The culprits are not fringe radicals. These are individuals who keep kosher, celebrate the Sabbath, and adhere to the minutiae of Jewish law even as they engage in acts so depraved that they defy comprehension. Here is snippet from a survivor’s testimonies:

“I remember a pentagram on the floor, usually in red. When the ceremony was in the forest, the pentagram was marked with a hoe and surrounded by lit candles in a circle. The rabbi would bless…they would repetitively read Psalms, like ‘A Psalm of David, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.’ They told me ‘you are special, you are chosen’ and they would insert... I remember a palm branch, Hanukkah candles, a shofar.”

Some of these perpetrators are qualified to blow the shofar on Rosh Hashanah — a high privilege among observant Jews. Family members, most of whom may have once been victims themselves, are often the ones who hand over their little ones to these monsters.

Several rabbis’ names appeared repeatedly in survivor testimonies. Multiple complaints filed at different police stations across Israel were quickly nipped in the bud. Prosecutions leading to imprisonments are rare. Much like anywhere else on this planet. Have any elite members of the Jeffrey Epstein pedophile network – itself rumored to be a Mossad operation – been charged in any court of law? Have the victims been asked to identify the perpetrators of these wicked deeds during the trial of Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell?

A twisted safari for the elites
Ritual child sexual abuse is a twisted safari sport of sorts for the elite. It combines satanic predilections with congenital moral turpitude. It also serves as a rites de passage for entry into a very select club of global movers and shakers whose inclusivity is dependent on mutual blackmailability. They are motivated by self-preservation and the accumulation of wealth and power foremost even as they dish out copious servings of faux nationalism.

According to the Jerusalem Post, which followed up on the Hayom report, “doctors, educators, police officers, and past and present members of the Knesset were involved in these abuses.” With prominent members of the public engaging in such activities, do not expect justice to be served. Instead, expect international coordination of the most depraved kind, with the United Nations reporting an alarming rise in child trafficking worldwide. What are those entrusted to guard our borders doing? While the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency comes down hard on undocumented immigrants, the dismantling of major child trafficking networks has been sporadic at best.

Evidence – even if it amounts to thousands of files – will be swiftly buried or distorted. This was the case when US Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel contradicted each other over the Epstein tapes. Elon Musk, on his part, alleged that President Donald Trump himself was “in the Epstein files.” Musk conveniently deleted the damning tweet a few days later. One cannot just open a Pandora’s Box involving the most powerful men on earth and expect things to die down.

MK-Ultra redux?
According to Rabbi Dr. Udi Furman, “ritual abuse occurs when a religious, political, or spiritual authority uses their position of power to manipulate victims’ belief systems and thereby control them.” But where does that control lead to? One only has to look up MK-Ultra.

MK-Ultra was a covert CIA program (1953–1973) designed to develop methods of mind control, interrogation resistance, and behavioral manipulation. Children were used in specific subprograms (e.g. Project Monarch, a rumored offshoot of MK-Ultra), often selected from vulnerable populations or foster systems. Sexual abuse, torture, and ritualistic elements were employed not merely for sadism, but for a purpose: to shatter the psyche of the child into dissociated identity fragments (commonly known now as Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly Multiple Personality Disorder). These fractured parts could allegedly be programmed with distinct “roles” (e.g. messenger, spy, seductress, pimp) for use in espionage, blackmail, or other covert operations. This is how the Ghislaine Maxwells of this world are forged.

The core idea was that through trauma-induced dissociation, an abuser could gain unprecedented access to the mind – sealing off traumatic memories, while implanting new behaviors or triggers without conscious awareness. Some survivors claim this created a form of “programmable human.”

Twofold crime
The goals of ritual child sex abuse are twofold: to violate the body and to distort the spiritual framework of victims. Children are indoctrinated into believing their suffering serves a divine purpose, replete with scriptural justifications.

This is spiritual abuse in its most sophisticated and perverse form. In Israel, the perpetrators manipulate foundational concepts in the Torah to legitimize unspeakable acts. As Noga puts it: “To achieve the great correction, one must suffer, because suffering purifies and advances redemption.” In a macabre parody of mysticism, victims are told they are instruments in a holy mission. Sexual exploitation is reframed as divine service. Trauma becomes theology.

Just what happens when child sexual abuse is perpetrated under religious pretexts? The victims end up hating God. It is hard to overstate the gravity of this spiritual wound. Just as sexual abuse damages trust in people, spiritual injury robs a child of faith. This is why Jesus Christ – the divine embodiment of salvation and forgiveness itself – decreed that it is better for monsters who perpetrate such acts to be drowned by having a millstone hung around their necks (Matthew 18:6). One can heal a broken limb. One cannot easily heal a soul that has been taught to interpret rape as redemption.

This is also about calculated spiritual inversion. Good is called evil; suffering is called sanctity and Satan is celebrated instead of God. Sacred symbols are used to consecrate violence. Some of the ceremonies uncovered by Hayom included cross-dressing, incest, and group sexual acts within family units – all under the banner of spiritual transcendence. They blur boundaries between good and evil, between sexuality and love, and family.

Legal loopholes and enduring travesties
Israeli legal frameworks do address sexual abuse and human trafficking, but they are ill-equipped to prosecute spiritual abuse wrapped under religious performance. This is ostensibly the reason why survivor testimonies have not led to arrests.

In truth, this is part of a well-worn pattern: the same silence that once cloaked clerical abuse across every major religion now shields elite institutions, where power exists to protect itself. Israel is arguably a global epicenter for child sexual abuse and trafficking, and has even provided sanctuary to a number of high-profile pedophiles.

Within religious communities, there is a deep impulse to preserve the illusion of sanctity at the expense of truth and justice. As Orit Sulitzeanu, head of Israel’s Association of Rape Crisis Centers, observed: “The conspiracy of silence within religious society often prevents exposure of severe exploitation and abuse cases.”

Over time, these debauched collusions and derelictions of justice lead to terminal moral decay. Ever wondered why some Israeli soldiers commit acts that defy all norms of human decency, including war crimes that are perpetrated with chilling ease? They are the products of a society where the brutalization of children is disturbingly normalized. As adults, they project the trauma and violations they once endured onto the defenseless. The abused become the abusers. And so, the cycle of violence renews itself – again and again.
