    Default Colour of Dragonflies

About five years ago, walking across a hill two council workers were staring at a Dragonfly. I stopped and asked them as I've asked other people, didn't Dragonflies used to be the colour of cooked sweetcorn and black?. The one they were staring at was greeny blue, which was the colour of Damsel flies though this was much bigger.
One agreed straight away the other expressed doubt, which made the first guy more hesitant. It was like they were thinking 'who am I to say what colour dragonflies are'.
Anyway I would like to know didn't Dragonflies used to be yellow and black?

Depends where you are in the world. I've seen 10cm-15cm Dragonflys with iridescence purple - orange. They are amazing creatures which sadly only exist in that form for a few days at most before perishing.

Dragonflies come in many colors depending on the species, sex, age, and even lighting conditions. Common colors include:
    • Blue
    • Green
    • Red
    • Orange
    • Yellow
    • Brown
    • Black
    • Metallic or iridescent combinations
    There are definitely yellow-and-black dragonflies.
Halloween Pennant - often has yellowish wings with dark markings and a black-and-yellow appearance.
Eastern Pondhawk - females can be greenish-yellow with dark markings.

Black-shouldered Spinyleg has prominent yellow-and-black patterning. Their front thoracic stripes are bold and mostly fused together, making them appear to have a black shoulder, and they have long legs with numerous spines of varying length.

People also sometimes mistake dragonflies for damselflies or certain wasps because some species have striking yellow-and-black markings.

I can't really add anything useful, in my experience in the UK until just a few years ago I only ever saw yellow and black Dragonflies. There are other changes, for example Cow Parsley seemed to hybridise, the plants became mostly purply brown, with the occasional one an odd green colour. The flower clusters changed from convex disc shape, to spherical and the plant became far more prolific.
There is also a tree here that seems to be a willow/hazel hybrid, it's growth has been strangely rapid, and is three trunks out of a base trunk that has a circumference of 2m, it can't be more than 20 years old. I will try and attach some photos.

Thanks Paula Regrettably, due to our demonic government in the UK, posts from Imgur aren't accessible so all these along with many others you've posted appear as a mauve square with the legend 'Content not viewable in your region'. Entirely not your fault of course but I wonder whether there's some kind of alternative platform that could be used - we're (in the UK) missing all the fun

Thanks for the heads up, Tintin.
I used postimages.org. It's a free upload site. I'm recalling how many images I've uploaded including all the smilie images. That adds up to a lot of mauve squares. I'll go back over the most recent posts and update them.
