Thanks for the info Tintin - this wonderful series really does deserve its own thread imo and its marvellous that you rescued it for prosterity .

Strange to think that there might still have been undertones of the shenanigans that is going on today in politics but which is now so much more "playground-like", and watching the exchanges in Parliament is nothing more than unfunny panto. I'm sure that politicians are blissfully unaware of the utter contempt we hold for them.

...I think what we have with these Civil Servants (a deeply ironic label) in all of our major Western nations is the executive face of the Intelligence organizations, the true seat of power which are overseen by 'the few'...

This is one of those things that's peculiarly British.

What American would let themselves be called "servant"?

We wouldn't understand how...this is thoroughly ingrained in Britain from the floor up. It must have a starting point that's relatively modern -- 1930s?

And, yes, loosely put, it seems like a form of speech or thought control -- presume it to be the maestro of "unwritten, unquestioned assumptions", dealing mainly with consequences because it does not know how to establish a good cause. That, of course, constitutes diversion from real issues.

Might be a bloated budgetary drain as well.

Because Britain is not known for wise policy, or anything, really, they have certainly come up with a way to sandbag dissent. At least to the point where it can hardly affect the status quo.
