Report: US Believed Israel Wanted To Kill Iran’s Araghchi and Ghalibaf During April Negotiations

The New York Times reported on Thursday that the US was concerned Israel might try to assassinate Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf during negotiations that were taking place in April.

The report, which cited US officials, said that the US agreed that Araghchi and Ghalibaf could have been targets for Israel during the full-scale war, as the US has strongly backed Israel’s assassinations, but that it was concerned that killing them during negotiations could have derailed the diplomatic process.

Some officials told the paper that the US went as far as telling other countries to warn Iran about the potential Israeli assassination plot.

The report said that Iran was concerned that Israel might have tried to kill Ghalibaf when he traveled to Pakistan for negotiations in April, and that on the way back, Iran’s “security forces notified the plane carrying Mr. Ghalibaf back to Tehran that they had picked up intelligence that Israel planned to attack the plane and that two Israeli fighter jets had entered Iran’s airspace from its western border near Iraq.”

Ghalibaf’s plane then landed in the Iranian city of Mashhad, and the officials traveled by land back to Tehran. The account was confirmed by Mahdi Mohammadi, a senior advisor to Ghalibaf.

Israeli officials have made clear that they’re eager to restart the full-scale war against Iran despite the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding and would likely want to start with another round of high-level assassinations. At the end of May, Capital & Empire reported that Israel was pressing the US for the resumption of large-scale strikes on Iran that would involve the targeted killing of Ghalibaf.

Millions gathered in Tehran as Iran launched six days of national mourning for Sayyed Ali Khamenei, with senior officials and international delegations joining the funeral ceremonies.

Six days of national mourning began as millions gathered in Tehran to honor Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

State television announced the opening of the ceremonies as large crowds converged on the capital. Iranian authorities estimate that between 15 and 20 million people will participate in Tehran over the next three days, making the farewell one of the largest public commemorations in the country’s history.

Sayyed Ali Khamenei led the Islamic Republic from 1989 until he was killed at the age of 86 on February 28, the opening day of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Before the official proceedings began, thousands of mourners carrying red banners—described as a symbol of vengeance—gathered in the courtyard of Tehran’s Grand Mosalla to await the arrival of Khamenei’s coffin. Chants of “death to America” and “revenge, revenge” echoed throughout the religious complex.

AFP journalists reported that many participants walked several kilometers to reach the venue, while hundreds had already assembled outside the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Grand Mosque on Friday evening to attend the funeral.

Members of Khamenei’s family who were killed in the US-Israeli strikes, including his infant granddaughter, are also scheduled to be buried during the funeral ceremonies.

Senior Iranian officials gathered on Friday to pay tribute to Khamenei following the war. Among those present were Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Ahmad Vahidi, who was recently appointed commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps after his predecessor was killed in the same attacks.

Foreign dignitaries attending the ceremonies included Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili, and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, representing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Delegations from Hamas, Hezbollah, Afghanistan’s government, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Nicaragua, Myanmar, and the Economic Cooperation Organization also joined the commemorations, alongside diplomatic representatives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Officials stress unity and readiness

Iranian officials stated that, despite the current pause in hostilities following an initial understanding between Iran and the United States, the country remains prepared to respond to any future attack on its sovereignty or territory.

“The nation’s call for vengeance must ring in the ears of the whole world,” Ghalibaf said, urging broad public participation in the funeral ceremonies.

Army chief Amir Hatami stated that “Israel” and the United States “will pay for the blood of the martyred leader and all the nation’s martyrs”.

As the ceremonies continue, authorities have urged mourners to follow public safety measures, while state television has broadcast guidance aimed at preventing crowd crushes during the mass gatherings in Tehran.

Far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has canceled a planned visit to New York following legal action and grassroots pressure, with rights groups hailing the cancellation as a “significant victory” in the fight against impunity for Israeli officials guilty of war crimes.

The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), a legal advocacy group, and the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights welcomed reports of the cancellation, which came after the HRF filed a complaint with the US Department of Justice and, together with the Center, submitted a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James.

In a statement, the HRF noted that for decades, senior Israeli officials “have traveled the world with the expectation of impunity. That era is coming to an end.” “When an Israeli minister cancels an international trip because of the possibility of facing criminal investigation, it demonstrates that accountability efforts are producing tangible results.”

Ben-Gvir, a controversial figure known for his promoting genocide against Palestinians, has been at the center of multiple violations.

The foundation vowed to continue pursuing “offensive legal action wherever international and domestic law provide avenues for justice.”

I've just visited the largest funeral in history, where millions mourned Sayyed Ali Khamenei, the Iranian leader who was assassinated by the US-Israeli coalition along with members of his family

It is practically impossible to understand what this scene is like, or what it means, unless you're here. I've met people from around the world who've come to pay respects, including many from across the West. The crowds pouring in are endless, and grow larger and more intense into the night.

From Tehran's Mosala, there are indignant calls for vengeance, displays of sorrow and defiance, protest, songs and marathons of poetry. These days of mourning will amount to one of the most resonant moments in the history of anti-imperialist movements.

Everyone I've spoken to believes war will return to Iran before long, and none trust the MOU with the US. But they are confident their country can deter another assault. They see their own citizens' mobilization as an integral component of Iran's survival.

If the assassination of Khamenei was designed to spur regime change, his funeral demonstrates how badly it has backfired. And the crime may blow back in ways its historically illiterate authors could have never imagined.

What we're witnessing in the Mosala consolidates the Islamic Republic and its revolutionary society as a political reality that can not be erased through regime change war or sanctions. This is a turning point in the region that will echo for a generation.
