The past week has shattered whatever faith remained in that Memorandum of Understanding. The United States and Iran have once again exchanged strikes, with the U.S. military saying it hit 90 military targets, though Tehran claims many of those sites were civilian. The Iranian military, meanwhile, says it has retaliated by targeting U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan. What’s now likely to happen? Has the renewed fighting vindicated Professor Robert Pape’s escalation trap?

On Ukraine, Professor Pape contends that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s campaign has become a strategic failure and that Ukraine is gaining the upper hand, including in Crimea. We put to Professor Pape the counterarguments advanced by Professors John Mearsheimer and Jeffrey Sachs, both of whom argue that Russia retains the strategic advantage and is likely to prevail in a prolonged ground war of attrition.

Robert Pape is Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago and author of the Substack The Escalation Trap. His forthcoming book is Our Own Worst Enemies: America and the Age of Violent Populism.

Tom Switzer is a journalist and broadcaster who has been a prolific commentator on politics and international affairs. “The Moment Ahmad Raised His Hands in Surrender, an Israeli Soldier Shot Him Directly in the Head”

The Guardian reports that Palestinian aid truck driver Ahmad Esleem was shot dead by an Israeli soldier while transporting humanitarian aid into Gaza, in what eyewitnesses and Gaza’s Transport Companies’ Association describe as a field execution.

Esleem, who was delivering food for World Central Kitchen (WCK) through a fully coordinated humanitarian convoy, was ordered out of his truck after one vehicle broke down near the Philadelphi Corridor. Witnesses say Israeli soldiers forced the drivers to strip, assaulted them, and made them stand under the sun. As Ahmad Esleem raised his hands in surrender, an Israeli soldier shot him directly in the head.

The 30-year-old, a father of two children, including a one-month-old baby, was killed despite wearing official identification, carrying all required permits, and operating under coordination approved by the Israeli military, according to his employer and Gaza’s truckers association.

Witnesses also said Israeli soldiers threatened the surviving drivers, warning they would meet the same fate as Esleem.

Palestinian aid truck driver Ahmad Esleem was shot dead by an Israeli soldier while transporting humanitarian supplies through the Philadelphi Corridor, in an incident described by witnesses and the Gaza Transport Companies’ Association as a summary execution. Esleem, 30, was part of a World Central Kitchen convoy operating under full coordination and with approved permits from the Israeli military when his vehicle encountered mechanical issues.

According to The Guardian, Israeli soldiers ordered the drivers out of their vehicles before stripping and assaulting them. Witnesses state that after being forced to stand in the sun, "the moment Ahmad raised his hands in surrender, an Israeli soldier shot him directly in the head."

The father of two was reportedly wearing official identification at the time of his killing, and survivors allege that soldiers subsequently threatened them with the same fate.

The killing highlights the extreme dangers faced by humanitarian workers in Gaza despite the use of deconfliction channels. The Gaza Transport Companies’ Association has condemned the incident as a deliberate act of violence against personnel facilitating essential food delivery, while the military has yet to provide an explanation for the engagement during the coordinated aid mission.

This morning July 12 in Lorestan, a cruise missile was downed by a new air defense system:







It's not much, if out of what happens we see the elimination of one munition. The circumstances don't make it look like a thousand of these defenses they bought from China, but are perhaps prototypes of what they have started on their own. When we are told of "unseen" or "new capabilities", I suppose that would count.

The difference is, if they had imported a bunch of weaponry, it could be taken out and that's it. If they built one thing that actually works, then they just keep making it and cruise missiles lose their effectiveness.

Syria shot down over forty but that was with Russian equipment.

Regional media reported that a missile strike on the U.S. airbase at Muwaffaq Salti in Jordan triggered massive blasts and tremors described as earthquake-like.

Air traffic at Amman's airport was suspended following the attack. Further explosions were reported at the King Hussein base in Jordan.

Explosions also rocked U.S. military positions in Kuwait, with the sound of the blasts heard inside Iraq, according to media reports.

In Bahrain, missiles struck two targets at the U.S. Fifth Fleet base. Bahrain's interior ministry issued an official statement confirming that warning sirens had been activated, and urged citizens and residents to remain calm, move to safe locations, and follow official announcements.


In the first phase, the IRGC said they set ablaze several large missile depots and fuel storage tanks at the Prince Hassan airbase in Jordan using missiles and drones. In the second, IRGC Aerospace Forces struck helicopter maintenance and repair centres, a P-8 electronic warfare aircraft hangar and a drone command and control centre at the U.S. base at Sheikh Isa in Bahrain.

In the third phase, the IRGC said it completely destroyed fuel tanks and Patriot air defence systems at the U.S. base at Ali al-Salem in Kuwait, along with a strategic FPS radar system at the Ahmad al-Jaber base.

"The retaliatory operations of your zealous sons continue," the IRGC said in a statement addressed to the Iranian nation, adding, "The Strait of Hormuz is our territory, and we will not allow an outlaw, child-killing army from the other side of the world to continue its illegal interventions."

Today marks Saudi attacks on Saana Airport, along with a few reprisals impacting:

U.S. facilities and infrastructure in Juffair, Bahrain, with flames seen rising from the targeted sites.

In the same wave, the IRGC said they struck and destroyed a long-range FPS air radar and a vessel detection radar in the Sultanate of Oman.

The statement blamed the U.S. for anti-human behaviour, saying its latest strikes had targeted an agricultural water pump in the Iranian town of Mahshahr.

"The only way for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened for vessel traffic is for the interventions of the invading American army in this strait to end, and for respect to be shown for the sovereignty of countries over their own coastal waters," the IRGC said.

It warned that continued U.S. interference "will lead to greater incidents in the world of oil and gas."


Explosions were reported in the al-Mina area of Kuwait, where U.S. military positions were struck by missiles and drones.

In Bahrain, one American commercial company was hit and caught fire, with columns of smoke seen rising over U.S. bases and affiliated areas across the Arab state.

When I see something like this:





I'm not sure I'd say "the site was destroyed", but, something about its operation seems to be seriously impaired.

Over here, of course, there's nothing but a bunch of liars trying to hide the cost and consequences of their actions, by for example not pursuing an impeachment. This is a travesty. We have dozens if not hundreds of those responsible who belong in a gulag.

Both Pepe Escobar (here) and Alastair Crooke (here) predict that the Houthis will soon close the Bab al-Mandeb Strait at the entrance to the Red Sea. If that happens, it elevates the whole situation to a new level of crisis.

Unsurprising...this "thing" is of course an age-old Saudi blockade that no one will do anything about. Except the Yemenis themselves.

For this reason, I, at least, have followed the convention of dropping the term "Houthi" as if meaning a follower of some rebel, and simply refer to it as "Yemen", de-legitimizing the Saudi-backed "other" government which has little visible function. Taking retaliatory forces to be the actual Yemen, it is capable of striking Arabia and Israel, and, of course, stopping Red Sea traffic.

Security is for everyone or no one.
