    Deep semantics

To get the money, land et al, one must imply ownership over them. Therefore, the delusion of ownership is the basis of "power".

Egyptian authorities on Friday blocked access to the Sinai peninsula, where it stepped up security, to prevent a march from Cairo to Gaza, an AFP correspondent said.

The march was due to leave from Cairo's Tahrir Square on Saturday to protest the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, and call for the right of return of Palestinian refugees and the release of all Palestinian prisoners.

"Peace Bridge,"one of the main access routes to Sinai from mainland Egypt, has been closed to all but residents of the peninsula.

The army also stepped up security around the peninsula, a security official said.

The march is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the day Israel was established, often referred to in Arabic as the "Nakba," or "catastrophe."

Meanwhile, dozens of protesters gathered outside the Israeli embassy in central Cairo on Friday to demand the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the severance of ties with the Jewish state.

"Millions of martyrs to Jerusalem," the protesters chanted as army and police officers stepped up security around the building housing the embassy.

Probably it will be seized upon by others who will profit from it. But the anger that is expressed over the policies of the Israeli government, parts of the Israeli government or forces behind the Israeli government concerning the Palestinian inhabitants is genuine. It still amazes me that people who fundamentally believe in the same god and the same religious principle let themselves be divided in this way.. To see the army blocking such a march goes to show only the puppet has changed in Egypt, not the policy.

It isn't necessarily a bad thing.
At least they can't get anywhere near israeli forces.
Could you imagine what would happen if even one protester was injured by them?

If it were an invasion yes. That indeed is an angle I forgot to look at in my thinking towards surpressing/halting a demonstration against Israel

Egyptian police use live ammunition to disperse a massive rally outside Israel's embassy in the capital Cairo, wounding more than 350 protesters.

The violence erupted on Monday after riot police fired tear gas and live rounds to disperse the protesters who broke through a barricade outside the embassy.

One of the wounded is said to be in critical condition. Twenty protesters have also been arrested.

The protesters set fire to an Israeli flag, called for the expulsion of Israel's ambassador and also the closure of the embassy.

On Sunday, thousands rallied in front of the Israeli embassy in Cairo.

Many among the crowd also voiced frustration with the ruling military council which earlier prevented a scheduled convoy of protesters from reaching Gaza.

On Sunday, the demonstrators gathered in different cities across the Middle East to remember the Day of Nakba, which marks the 63rd anniversary of the Israeli occupation of Palestine in 1948.

Egyptians have frequently called on their military rulers to abandon Israel and lift the blockade on the besieged Gaza Strip.

Under the US-backed Mubarak regime, Egypt consistently served Tel Aviv's interests in the region by helping to impose a crippling blockade on the impoverished Strip after the democratically-elected Hamas government took control of the territory in 2007.

Getting yourself killed and/or starting another war isn't a good way to remember Al Naqba.
I think the army did them a favour, stopping the protesters from entering Sinai.
I wonder who is stirring up the crowd around the embassy?
The madness goes on and the thirst for blood reaches a fever pitch.

BREAKING NEWS: Humanitarian Ship to Gaza Running out of Food and Water

by Michel Chossudovsky and Julie Lévesque

LATEST UPDATE, Tuesday, 24 May 2011, 7.13am EDT, 13.13 local time

According to our latest communication (satellite phone) from the ship, the boat is still stranded in territorial waters.

The Egyptian port authorities have not received instructions to allow the ship to berth, despite the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was communicated to the Malaysian embassy. According to sources, it would appear that the decision is being blocked by Egypt's Military Intelligence, in consultation with Tel Aviv anbd Washington.

Meanwhile the ship has become a de facto prison. It is running out of water and food.

"Our water supply is totally finished. We are now using sea water to clean ourselves, flush toilet, and wash dishes. We are only using half a bottle of mineral water for final cleansing of cooking utensils, after boiling it to get rid of the oil and dirt.

Each member of the crew and passenger must get their own pail of sea water each time they use the toilet and to flush it. We are now rationing our drinking water supply which consists of limited bottles of mineral water. However, the spirit and morale of the team is high and we are resolute to face all eventualities and to defeat and overcome any schemes that may prevent the cargo from reaching Gaza."

UPDATE, Monday 23 May, at 13.30pm EDT, 20.30pm local time

The Spirit of Rachel Corrie is back in Egyptian territorial waters. The crew and passengers are safe. The Malaysian Embassy in Cairo has advised that the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has granted permission to the ship to berth in the port of Al Arish tomorrow May 24th and unload its cargo.

This decision by Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil Al Arabi, which remains to be confirmed, is of fundamental significance. It is an important step towards breaking the Gaza blockade.

Mr. Al Arabi had indicated almost a month ago his resolve to open the border at Rafah and end the Gaza blockade.

After 4 years under total lockdown, Gaza's 1.5 million residents finally have a gateway to the outside world. Egypt's dropped the stringent security that Israel insisted on for its border crossing with the blockaded region. Israel's long struggled to keep Gaza's borders watertight, depriving people there in the hope of forcing Hamas out of power. Human rights groups cite the massive humanitarian cost - from food shortages, to the sick being unable to leave for simple treatment. But, as Paula Slier reports, a lifeline for Palestinians is a real headache for Tel Aviv.

Finally, the Felestini have someone do something positive for them.
I just hope this doesn't become a door for more stupidity.
The irony of this is that if the border was open and the felestini had some dignity and respect, they wouldn't have such an urge to attack the kibbutz near them.
I just want the madness to end.
    Insh'allah.

    FYI:

Quote The Israeli Ministry of Infrastructure has demanded permission from the gas company Nobel Energy to start working in developing the natural gas field that was found off the Gaza Strip shoreline, under the pretext that Israel fears gas shortages in the coming year.

In a press statement on Monday, the Israeli Ministry of Infrastructre said that it officially requested permission from Nobel Energy to submit a work programme to dig and develop gas fields by July.

The ministry explained that the reason official permission has been sought before digging the oil is because the field is close to the territorial waters of the Gaza Strip.

Israel gets natural gas from Egypt through an agreement in which Israel pays less than internationally recognised prices to Egypt. After the Egyptian uprising and the toppling of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian people demanded that the channeling of gas to Israel would be stopped until a new agreement could be reached, so that the Egyptian people could benefit first from their natural resources.

A large concentration of natural gas was found off the Gaza shoreline, and the British Gas group along with Lebanese partners were given the right to dig there and sell the gas during an agreement wthat was signed in November 1999 with the Palestinian Authority.

The British company had already set up two gas wells called Gaza Marine 1 and Gaza Marine 2. According to the British Gas group, the natural reservoir offf the Gaza shore is estimated at 1.5 trillion cubic meters, at a net worth of around $4 billion US dollars.

However, Chossudovsky, a Canadian economist, estimated that the amount of gas in Palestine is much more, adding that it could make the future Palestinian state as rich as Kuwait, due to the average population in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Nobel Energy is a US based company based in New York that digs oil and natural gas internationally.

Dmitry Dliani, Fatah top official, commented on the Israeli Ministry of Infrastructure decision as a license to steal the Gaza gas, as part of Israeli attacks on Palestinian rights. Dliani demanded international protection for the Palestinian natural gas reservoir off the Gaza shore.

    FYI:

Quote An unnamed high-ranking Israeli military source has warned against any potential seaborne attempt by pro-Palestinian activists to deliver humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip.

"No ship will get into Gaza," the source was quoted by Reuters as saying in a warning directed against an aid flotilla, which is to set off for Gaza in the third week of June.

The Israeli source also threatened that "If the sea line is opened, then Gaza will be flooded with arms and rockets.”

The Freedom Flotilla II is organized by a coalition of pro-Palestinian groups, most of whom are based in Europe.

The mission is named after the first such mission, which Israel attacked on May 31, 2010, killing nine Turkish activists and injuring around 50 others.

The organizers of the new convoy say it will consist of around 15 vessels and over 1,000 activists.

The Israeli regime laid an economic siege on the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after the democratically-elected Hamas lawmakers took over the administration of the enclave.

The blockade has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the impoverished territory.

Some 1.5 million people are being denied their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and their rights to appropriate living conditions, work, health and education.

Quote Adm. Eliezer Marom says only purpose of Gaza flotilla is to clash with IDF soldiers, create media provocation, and delegitimize Israel.

    By Anshel Pfeffer

Israel Navy commander Adm. Eliezer Marom issued a stark warning on Sunday for the organizers of the Gaza flotilla intended to set sail at the end of the month.

"The Navy has prevented and will continue to prevent the arrival of the 'hate flotilla' whose only goals are to clash with IDF soldiers, create media provocation and to delegitimize the State of Israel," Marom cautioned, speaking during the Israel Navy Divers' Course concluding ceremony.

The Navy commander called on all parties involved to do everything they can to prevent the departure of what he called the "provocation flotilla."

He said that a number of figures in the international community have said "that a humanitarian crisis in Gaza is nonexistent, and that all supplies may enter Gaza via the land crossings in a coordinated manner."

Marom also added that the flotilla allows Hamas to get equipped with an unlimited amount of weapons in order to carry out terror acts on Israel.

On Friday, the Turkish organization IHH announced that the Mavi Marmara ship, on which nine Turkish activists were killed last May when it was intercepted by Israeli commandos on its way to Gaza, will not take part in the upcoming convoy.

Organizers of the flotilla expressed disappointment that the Turkish IHH will not take an active role in the convoy, which will still set sail without the Marmara later this month.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Arab Higher Monitoring Committee, which was supposed to discuss on Saturday the composition of its delegation for the flotilla, removed the item from its agenda in light of recent changes.

The committee said that it had been invited by the Turks to participate in the flotilla. Due to the IHH's cancellation, the number of participants from the Higher Monitoring Committee is expected to be reduced.

    FYI:

Quote In comments yesterday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seemed to lay the ground – indeed almost provide a green light – for an Israeli military attack on the upcoming Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which will include the US Boat to Gaza.

Among the passengers aboard the American boat will be 87-year old Kindertransport survivor Hedy Epstein, and author and poet Alice Walker. In all it is expected that about 10 ships, carrying 1000 people from over 20 countries will take part.

Here’s what Clinton said in remarks at the State Department on 23 June:

Well, we do not believe that the flotilla is a necessary or useful effort to try to assist the people of Gaza. Just this week, the Israeli Government approved a significant commitment to housing in Gaza. There will be construction materials entering Gaza and we think that it’s not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke actions by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israelis have the right to defend themselves.

Clinton must know that Gaza is not part of what any country recognizes as "sovereign" Israeli territory, and therefore neither are Gaza’s territorial waters. Any boats entering Gaza’s waters would not in fact be entering "Israeli waters" as Clinton claimed. Clinton also, presuming she is properly briefed rather than misled, must also know that last year Israel attacked the Gaza Freedom Flotilla when it was in international waters and GPS data showed that it was actually heading away from Israel.

By invoking Israel’s supposed "right to self-defense" against civilian boats trying to reach Gaza, we must understand that Clinton is telling Israel the United States will not stand in the way of another military attack.

And by citing Israel allowing construction materials into Gaza to make the case that the flotilla is "unnecessary" because "aid" can reach the Palestinian people in Gaza, Clinton is engaging in the ultimate obfuscation.

    FYI:

Quote The United States on Friday warned activists against plans to send a new aid flotilla to challenge Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, saying it would be irresponsible and dangerous.

"Groups that seek to break Israel's maritime blockade of Gaza are taking irresponsible and provocative actions that risk the safety of their passengers," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said in a statement, adding that there were established ways to move humanitarian aid to Gaza.

"We urge all those seeking to provide such assistance to the people of Gaza to use these mechanisms, and not to participate in actions like the planned flotilla," Nuland said.

Israel on Wednesday said it had warned the United Nations that a new aid flotilla -- which activists say could depart from European ports in coming days -- could result in "dangerous consequences.

Israel has made clear it will prevent any new flotilla from reaching Gaza. A year ago, nine Turkish activists, including one with dual U.S.-Turkish nationality, were killed in an Israeli raid on a similar convoy.

The Israeli military came under fierce criticism for the May 2010 raid, which led to a severe deterioration of its ties with Turkey.

The United States, Israel's most important ally, has backed Israel's blockade of Gaza, which the Palestinian Islamist Hamas group seized from forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007.

Palestinians believe the Israeli sea blockade is illegal and say it is helping strangle Gaza's underdeveloped economy.

Nuland said there were "established and efficient" mechanisms for getting humanitarian aid into Gaza, and the situation there had improved significantly over the last year with a broader range of goods and materials available.

But she said that recent weapons seizures and periodic rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza against Israeli civilians illustrated the ongoing necessity for Israel to screen Gaza-bound cargo.

"We underscore that delivering or attempting or conspiring to deliver material support or other resources to or for the benefit of a designated foreign terrorist organization, such as Hamas, could violate U.S. civil and criminal statutes and could lead to fines and incarceration," Nuland said.

    FYI:

Quote By Dan Murphy, Staff writer / June 27, 2011

A ship jointly owned by Swedish, Greek, and Norwegian activists hoping to join a flotilla of activist vessels challenging Israel's economic blockade of Gaza, had its propeller cut while in Athen's harbor today. A spokesman contacted by the Monitor said that the damage was a deliberate act of sabotage.

Israel and its allies have been working hard to head off the planned flotilla, which is hoping to enter the waters off Gaza in the next week. Col. (ret) Ann Wright, who's organizing a US vessel named the Audacity of Hope for the flotilla, says her ship has been detained in Athens on spurious charges that it's not seaworthy. She says that charge was made by an Israeli legal group.

Now the Juliano is held up. Mikael Löfgren, a spokesman for Ship to Gaza Sweden, says the damage was discovered at 6:30 in the evening Athens time today, and that divers probably cut the propeller in the past 24 hours.

"The reports I'm receiving is that it's certain that it was sabotage," says Mr. Löfgren, reached by phone in Sweden. "The propeller and [propeller shaft] has been cut and we have divers that have filmed the damages. Experts have said there’s no doubt" that the damage was deliberate.

He says that repairing the damage will take a few days. As to who is responsible, he declined to speculate. "We simply don't know who did it, but it's obviously a hostile act," says Löfgren.

Israel has been desperate to stop the flotilla from nearing Gaza. Israel raided a similar flotilla in international waters last year, killing nine pro-Palestinian activists in the process, one of them an American citizen. In the wake of that event, and the international outcry against Israel, Israel eased some of the restrictions on the flow of goods into Gaza.

This year, Israel is determined it doesn't get that far. Earlier today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet approve using any means necessary to stop the flotilla from reaching Gaza.

The US has also been putting pressure on the activists to hold back. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton characterized the flotilla as hostile in a comment last week.

"We think that it's not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke action by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israelis have the right to defend themselves," Clinton said.

The flotilla, in fact, says it has no plans to enter Israeli waters, instead planning on transiting through international waters to Gaza's territorial waters. The distinction goes to the heart of their protest. While Israel extends de facto sovereignty over Gaza's coastal waters, penning its fisherman close to shore and preventing any shipping or ferries to run to and from the Strip, it's not their territory under international law.

The activists themselves say they want to make the point that peacefully coming and going from Gaza shouldn't be criminalized, insist that they will practice nonviolence in their attempt, and that they'd be delighted to simply sail through unmolested.

DemocracyNow.org - Up to 50 Americans are set to sail from a Greek port on a U.S.-flagged ship that is part of an international flotilla carrying humanitarian aid and letters of support for Gaza's 1.5 million Palestinian residents. Its fate is now in limbo under the weight of U.S.-Israeli pressure and Greece's economic turmoil. Israel insists it will enforce its blockade on Gaza, which it says is aimed at stopping weapons from reaching the Hamas government. "The Israelis have a right to interdict arms traffic. We are bearing letters," says Ray McGovern, former Senior CIA analyst and passenger on the U.S. aid ship. "How can these letters be considered a threat to security of Israel?" He is the only journalist with the U.S. delegation, and files this exclusive report.
