Default Nasa satellite visible above UK before crashing to Earth

The American satellite crashing towards Earth should be visible in Britain at about 9pm tonight, the team monitoring its path has said.Nasa's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is due to fall to Earth tonight and will most likely land in the Pacific Ocean shortly after midnight British time.

Experts warned it is impossible to know for sure when and where the satellite will make its final descent, but if predictions are correct then it should be visible in Britain to the naked eye as it plunges down.

Current models may have to be redrawn as the UARS enters the atmosphere, but if they are correct Britons will see a bright orange streak in the night sky to the south east at about 9pm.

Experts who are monitoring the satellite's descent from RAF Fylingdales in the North York Moors, as part of an international effort to track its path, said the space junk was "highly unlikely" to hit Britain.

Sq Comm Ralph Dinsley, station commander at RAF Fylingdales, told the Telegraph: "It is so hard to predict. We know fairly closely where it is going to hit the atmosphere but after that it is like skipping a stone across a pond.

Is it worth looking south east if you live in London? I'd really love to see it. Had a dream about this years ago.

How much attention do you think a falling satellite deserves?

    Update #10
    Fri, 23 Sep 2011 10:45:08 AM EDT

As of 10:30 a.m. EDT on Sept. 23, 2011, the orbit of UARS was 100 miles by 105 miles (160 km by 170 km). Re-entry is expected late Friday, Sept. 23, or early Saturday, Sept. 24, Eastern Daylight Time. Solar activity is no longer the major factor in the satellite’s rate of descent. The satellite’s orientation or configuration apparently has changed, and that is now slowing its descent. There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent. It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any certainty, but predictions will become more refined in the next 12 to 18 hours.

    latest on this

A huge, dead satellite tumbling to Earth is falling slower than expected mmmmmmmmmmmmm, and may now plummet down somewhere over the United States tonight or early Saturday, despite forecasts that it would miss North America entirely, NASA officials now say.

The 6 1/2-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) was expected to fall to Earth sometime this afternoon (Sept. 23), but changes in the school bus-size satellite's motion may push it to early Saturday, according to NASA's latest observations of the spacecraft.

..and you just KNEW at the last moment the story would change to it possibly hitting something.

Funny how these disasters always want to make their approach at night.

I wonder why...because people are sleeping so they are not watching or is it the night makes a great hiding place?

    Update

Nasa do not have a clue where this is

    Maybe Canada they say.

They have also warned members of the public that this object remains property of the government.

    What a load of crap

Also with the vast amount of space why would they risk life to humans bringing this back to earth. This does not add up.Liars liars and liars but hey why would they be any different they have been doing it for over 40 years.
