The seismic crisis of El Hierro has gone up a notch tonight. The authorities have evacuated about 45 people (the council originally planned 300) and closed the main tunnel of the island, linking the two largest cities. They have done so because the earthquake, more than 8,000 since July 19 over 100 on Tuesday, are only becoming more intense and causes scientists to see more and more likely to be a volcanic eruption.

About ten o'clock at night, the Guardia Civil has begun to advise families of four cores of the municipality of Frontera (south of the island) that they should leave their homes for fear of landslides. The hit came with resignation to the square of the neighborhood. "We caught it right and go to my brother," said Mari Paz resigned.

Curious, nervous residents and tourists have been mixed on the night of El Hierro to hear the news. If at first the neighbors were very little concerned about the succession of earthquakes, this evening many neighbors have anguish in the face. The main artery of the island has been cut. Travel between the two main towns, Valverde to Frontera, will last for 15 minutes at 40 by a mountain road. In addition, 500 students (a third of the island) will not have class on Wednesday.

Yet there are those who believe that everything is an exaggeration. "What is this? If iron sinks because we all sink with it. I've been with goats in these cliffs and I know that does not fall all at once," says Julio Brito Padrón, a man of 83 years, walking shirtless in the warm night, and relying on a cane. His wife, Victoria Quintero, nods when he realized that only left El Hierro to go to the barracks.

The island supports a unique experiment in Spain: the preparation for an eventual volcanic eruption. Scientists at the National Geographic Institute (IGN) tour of the island people to explain what might happen, to calm the people and answer their questions. In addition, Civil Protection of the Canary Islands has developed a device to, at worst, the evacuation of 4,000 people in four hours. He has already contacted shipping companies and airlines that operate in the Canary Islands to use their ships in case of eruption.

The residents of the island are prepared

Most earthquakes have been imperceptible to the 10,000 inhabitants of El Hierro. Of the more than 8,000, only 15 have been felt, but the increasing intensity has raised the alarm. "We can not fight with nature," sums Casañez Arminda Perez, a woman returned to the emigration of Venezuela 40 years ago. Is at the door of his house in the village of Sabina, one of the most affected. Arminda, who wears a medal of Our Lady of Coromoto has hardly noticed the earthquake, but it is informed. He has gone to the talks by scientists from IGN and knows that in case of eruption, go to the town square and should have prepared a bag with essentials. It has not, as most of the respondents, it does not seem to fear that the earth to open beneath his feet. Maite Padrón, director of the Hotel Balneario Pozo de la Salud, has felt the cancellation of visits more than earthquakes.

Evacuations are taking place one step at a rally that began Friday, when the Canaries rose for the first time volcano warning light and put it in amber: pre-emergence. On Tuesday there has been almost a hundred and reaching a magnitude of 3.8. At least on paper everything is ready. "Do not look at all leave the island, but handle different assumptions," says Juan Manuel Santana, Director General of Security and Emergency Canary Islands Government.

IGN has developed several hypotheses about how an eruption can occur and the paths they could follow the lava and ash. "What else is planned is in the Gulf area, which could affect 4,000 people," that "would be evacuated within four hours," said Santana. To do this, be mobilized ships and planes from nearby islands. In addition, staff of 112 in El Hierro has been reinforced and receive materials. If, as happens now, moves to the south "there just is no population" and reduce the number of people affected.

The talks are the villages and busy teaching. On a display, which account for IGN, the Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands (non-tip) and Civil Protection of the island explained, even in remote village, to prepare a backpack with water, mobile battery, can opener, a whistle, a handkerchief ... "The mortgage will leave it to burn, 'says the responsibility to remove tension. One hundred residents of San Andrés listen carefully to the instructions. Teachers lead children to the meeting point and the rest should proceed in a number of things. First, it should not be first in line if there comes a tsunami, but also "to be protected from the ashes mouth with a tissue dampened" and avoid "the canyons because they accumulate gases. Before leaving the house, advise, have to cut the gas. As explained, the crisis "has taken a run" although it is unclear how it will end. It's nice to see scientists in a village level by an educational effort.

    "Anything can happen"

On the slope of the Gulf, Abella and Itahiza Rafael Dominguez, IGN researchers, control the situation through sensors across the island to notice the movements that are mild and pass on the fly to Madrid. They came here just to note, in mid-July, an unusual move to deploy land mobile network. "Anything can happen," he admits. Everything is calm or the emergence of a rash on the sea and no one will know until the lava affecting the west of the island. But it can also nothing happens in weeks or years. Nobody knows what happens to the magma, located between 12 and 15 kilometers deep. What is not in doubt, say the GPS is that the island "has swelled about four centimeters," according Itahiza. With the rise of magma, the field expands.

Elsewhere on the island, Dácil Nolasco, a researcher at the Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands, click on the ground every 500 meters to measure the diffuse flux of CO2, which serves as an indicator of the magmatic activity in the subsoil. Nemesio Perez, non-tip, confirms that the flow of CO2 has risen almost continuously over the last month.

Although from the Volcano Teneguía in 1971, there has been no eruption in the Canary Islands, the population is relatively normal phenomenon. The leaflet handed out to calm the population noted that the archipelago has "similar to Hawaiian volcanism, where people live daily with its active volcanoes" and asks people to "pay no attention to rumors spread alarmist nor" . But the councils have no depth at all. On Tuesday, the earth trembled as the young Border institute received a lecture on how to stay calm in case of earthquakes. The response was not very quiet, as Ruyman Quintero, 16 third-year student and ESO.

People do not have much experience, because since 1739 there is a similar crisis. Then record the tremors stopped the letters which the Mayor of El Hierro sent to the royal Audiencia de Canarias in the ships calling to evacuate the population for the continuous tremors, as documented by the teacher at the University of La Laguna Carmen Romera . It is believed that then, he says, erupting not over, at least there are no historical records, or if there was not very great. Then came to nothing. This time, we'll see."

The Canary Islands government has taken this decision to the expectations of the scientific teams indicate that the earthquakes that are shaking the island more than 8,000 since July, the vast majority-are almost imperceptible increase in intensity and frequency from the Midnight but the light volcanic risk level is still yellow and not expected an imminent eruption.

However, they are the largest observed since the beginning of this phenomenon and, contrary to what was happening so far, eight have been felt by the population.

The evacuation order given for the municipality of La Frontera affects families residing in the neighborhoods of Las Puntas, Pie Risco, Health and Well of Guinea, which will be allocated in the school residence and the headquarters Valverde de La Caldera, says the Government canary in a statement.

Below is about the best coverage of pre evac and that they felt they had to because the internet was coming alive their sites were basically getting more hits
    http://www.antena3.com/canarias/noti...092700190.html

    translation under video

"These days the local media on the island have seen an increase in the number of visits. The main two are The Iron Digital ... and the daily El Hierro, where an expert titled ensures that an eruption would be beneficial for tourism.
Outside our borders, in Germany, the newspaper Der Spiegel, has titled: Earthquake in El Hierro, Canary Islands magma rises. Or in some international sites include headlines like this: Canary prepares for an eruption.
Here in the islands, the government shall keep the Internet through this official website."

Closest to msm yet ... news channel from South Africa:

Quote Canary Island prepares for eruption

    2011-09-26 21:46

Santa Cruz de Tenerife - Minor earthquakes have been reported on El Hierro, indicating a slim chance that a volcano could erupt on the Spanish Canary Island, an expert said on Monday.

About 8 000 tremors have been registered on El Hierro since July 19, said Maria Jose Blanco, director of the National Geographic Institute on the Canaries.

More than 30 quakes occurred on Monday.

Most of the tremors so far have been too weak to be noticed by residents. The strongest, which registered at a magnitude of 3.4, was felt all over the island on Saturday.

The seismic movements indicated that magmatic material was pressing towards the Earth's surface, Blanco said.

El Hierro has a large volcano and about 250 craters, according to figures quoted by the daily El Pais.

There was only about a 10% likelihood that the seismic movements would lead to a volcanic eruption, Blanco said.

Even in that case, the eruption was expected to occur so slowly that it would leave the authorities time to evacuate residents, El Pais quoted El Hierro security official Maria del Carmen Morales as saying.

The authorities are informing the island's 10 000 residents about the possibility of an eruption and on what to do if that happened.

El Hierro has not seen a volcanic eruption since 1793.

May you and yours be safe randles. Much love to you.

My daughter pointed out something quite odd regarding these earthquakes in the Canares. Many of them are square or in line! Never seen that before. Looks quite unnatural! Go to Quakewatch and see for yourself.
