What do I do when I’m feeling despondent?

I’m okay with being a work in progress.

I use to draw strengthen from my life experiences. But over the last twenty years or so, Love, Joy, Gratitude are some of the drivers. Living in the Now.

For the times when I feel despondent, I am aware it is usually because I’ve naively allowed a negative, outside source to invade the mind/heart space. Then I see it’s really me not the “other”, so empowerment returns to center.

Another part is that I allow my mind to free flow. What comes up are usually old tapes/beliefs that I see how silly it was to give them the energy that I did. This may take a couple of days depending on what there is to process. It’s critical that I tap into the feelings, acknowledge them, or they may burrow deep into the physical body. Pay now, pay later.

Daily exercise is important to keep the endorphins working. Large blocks of daily reflection and contemplation which included insightful reading, and listening material. And silence.

I am aware that there are times of coping mechanisms that range from naps to Ben and Jerry’s. With the alcoholism in my family, rule #1 for me, I don’t turn to it when I’m in a bad place. I’ve kept that promise even in the worst of worst experiences.

Action steps and financial steps are important for me. I wrote down some examples of “the game” of saving. But you mentioned a six figure salary, I don’t think my ideas would work for you. I’ve got a masters degree plus a 6th year, so I understand how you get squeezed out of the market. I wish I had sage advice for you Whiskey Mystic. If I did I’d bottle it and share it with you.

Hi, kids.
I need a mood boost today. My unemployment benefits ran out a month ago and I have been unable to find work. Lots of interviews, but no offers yet. I'm a business executive and most blue collar jobs won't hire me because they know as soon as I get a six figure job offer again I will be out the door. And they are right. This economy is very tough. My long term prospects are still very good, but my short term survival is going to be rough.

So what do you guys do when you are feeling despondent?

Maybe we could ask the mods to allow a non-public access Garage sale thread,
where Avalon members who are hitting on hard times can put up pictures of stuff they want to sell,
and then negotiate via PM. If they have a Paypal account it might work.

I feel your pain, Whiskey-Mystic. I haven't had a regular job in almost 2 years, despite being so highly educated they'll be coming after me for student loans after I'm dead.

I remember being on unemployment insurance and looking for work, it was so leisurely. And then, when it ran out, the desperate search, then working for a short while before becoming unemployed again. It was unbelievable to me, I never thought I'd be in that position.

Now, I'm one of the long-term unemployed and have found out that my demographic, in all statistical studies, is actually predicted to experience long-term unemployment once a job is lost.

Go figure.

Letting go was all I was able to do. Oh, besides going through the dark night of the soul.

I used to find hard physical exercise helpful, now I find helpful physical exercise hard. But seriously - full endorsement - blocked energies are well released via this method.

I hear you on this one ... I've turned away many applicants for being overqualified for exactly that reason - it is a very real problem many can face. Is there any way you can be consultant for small to medium sized business? That may take some time to get off the ground but at least you'd be working for yourself. I'm just randomly shooting in the dark with a randomly aimed arrow, so likely i'm not even being reasonable to your situation. Anyway, best of luck - I'll do a visualization of you being fully taken care of and back to where you want to be if that helps (although Bill Murray may suddenly find himself starting a consultation business instead .. lol -- j/k)

And to answer your question ... I don't really do anything .. drink a bit more beer maybe, and sleep it off. Lately everyday seems to bring me something new in the way of how I feel and my outlook - I guess not dwelling on thoughts too much helps. Thinking is bad unless it is being constructive or creative. 2 Cents.

Hey Whiskey, that feeling of running out of funds is not pleasant, I know but there are truths and wisdom there to be learned as well. The first is that you will survive it, and come out stronger for it as well. That's the key, for me at least.
And for me meditation works wonders with lots of deep breathing, or a bit of yoga (excersise is always good to get the spirits up).
