I don't undertand it?...Why do people feel they have a right to download other copyright work and then when YouTube tries to protect copyright everyone is quick to share a way around it? I also have problem with YouTube but not in protecting copyright.

Lots of people/organizations use YouTube as a cheap means to share archived radio shows. Downloading them on a portable device
for later listening is exactly the meaning of podcasts isn't it ? (Provided the producer of the show put it up there).

A producer would put it up there explicitly to share ... How come YouTube, not being the owner, gets to decide what to do and
what not to do with contents they are not the creator of ?

No, but the answer to that, is to create another video site like YOUTUBE that allows the public to share, which was the reasoning for it in the first place.

YouTube was not an altruistic endeavor.

I am not even sure this is a copyright/censorship issue.

They simply need to retain their status as the channel that you must use to watch their stuff so they can bug you with advertising and the like. Keep their view stats accurate - see who is viewing what, who clicks on what add etc

Of course that does make censorship and control of media that is possible a neo-cons wet dream!

Ahh,...Cool, I can calm down now, thanks Cjay. That download facility ( I use Firefox's "video download helper) is so very important in the fight against tyranny. Many people don't have computers and being able to download geopolitical documentaries and make DVDs to pass around is the only way to get the news around. As well as that without being able to download videos it's almost impossible to "go viral" with them. Phew I can relax. Thanks again.

I use Realplayer to download videos from YouTube (or videos that are posted here). Once the video starts playing, a box pops up called Download This Video??...to which I click yes. I can edit the title of the video as it's downloading. The end result of FLV..and after the download completes...Realplayer Converter kicks in to convert to whatever format I choose (except AVI....for which I use Full Video Converter Free v.9). Interestingly enough, for me, the Realplayer Video Download option only works with Firefox (not Chrome and not IE).

Thanks for this thread.I've tried to download a few times off YouTube in the last 24 hours with no success,didn't really understand it.I've been using Download Helper,will change over to something else now.

This morning I tried to upload a video to Facebook that I put together for Occupy, and Facebook knocked it back quoting copyright infringement.All pics are already on Facebook, the song is pretty much unknown and the video has been on YouTube for a few months with no problems.The same video has been on my FB page all that time also,and is still on it.I uploaded it from YouTube to my page but tried to upload it from my PC to post on Occupy Brisbane as I couldn't "share it from my page to theirs.

for few years back i use jDownloader and it works epic and it is best option out there, it simply grabs all from that page, you want .mp4, .flv, .mp3? pick and choose. It works pretty simple by copying link and it finds automaticly, no need to paste it anywhere..
second thing i use is fastest option without starting jDownloader is Ant video http://www.ant.com/video-downloader .. epic tool also as it grabs streams from most of popular sites and does it flawless..
it comes as add on to firefox so you can find it under add-on's in firefox..

anyways believe it or not but how internet atm works is that your browser is caching all webpages you visit.. so when you go to some video stream site you can go to your computer and /User/Application Settings/Local/Temp/ there you will seee bunch of stuff some didnt even knew it exists. Youtube videos usually looks like "asd78876a8sf768s7f8668.tmp" .. it has some numbers and letters and .tmp extension, one can simply go and change that extension to .flv, .mp4 and voila it works nice but name is messed up a bit
And you can use that temp option EVERY time some downloader fails to reckognise video. Only thing you want to consider for big file to set browser caching option on bigger file sizes as by default is set to smaller files arround 15mb.. just drag it to dunno 500mb and it caches even big files..
I dont use that very often cause i like to keep filename and rest of data from vid so i only use that when everything else fails..

for less important stuff to me and some quick one downloads i use that firefox Ant extension, the problem with it is that it saves video as .flv and i can't later use them on some tablet devices and phones so i need to convert them later to mp4 for that usage.
But since im building home server with few dozens of terrabytes i like to keep track source of file that i downloaded and jDownloader does it i awesome way "[filename]_[source]_[format]" something like: "GeorgeGreenConspiracy_www.youtube.com.mp4"
in that way i can avoid duplicate file downloads and could track if in future from that source came video in higher quality or even if some change is made to that video.

Note there are some things that are streamed without any caching like live cam shows or some "better" protected sites for "copyright" in that case i found that real audio stram grabber works perfect, it can grab live cam and audio stream and thats awesome.

Being said all of that we come to simple fact that you can have EVERY single thing that passes through your computer, as long you can see it on screen you can have it.

I don't care about copyrighted rubbish e.g music, movies ENTERTAINMENT. You know the sort of rubbish that conditions people to defend a corrupt legal system. I am concerned about material that has no copyright, material that was meant to go viral in order that our freedom isn't stolen. Apparently you missed the point. If Youtube is claiming copyright on the material to which I'm referring, they are doing it illegally. E.G when Alex Jones makes a video of one of his rants it was his intention that the people download it and pass it around. He has no copyright on the data, doesn't want it. Is that clear enough ?

Thanks, I've long since become fed up with apps that don't seem to work for long. I tried this, and it's really neat that all it does is add an extra button to the page that says "DOWNLOAD".

I've used it 3 times already and also downloaded a free app that extracts the soudtracks from videos faster than I can usually record them in real time.

I'm usually only interested in the audio, and have saved hundreds of the soudtracks to my hard drives for several years.



I used to use my emergency method to save a video but recent vesions of Adobe Flash Player have crippled that method. It used to save a whole file into the temporary internet files folder, and I could deliberately crash my computer to prevent the browser from deleting the temp file, then re boot and find the file and rename it to whatever it's proper title should be, and give it the FLV extension.

A few months ago, they stopped all that. Now I've got another way to grab videos. That's great. Thanks.

My internet connection is so bad that I can't usually get a glitch free audio recording from a live streaming from Youtube etc. I've had to download the whole video and run it in my "MCI Browser" app to get a decent glitch free recording ( or else spend ages going through the sound file in CoolEdit Pro 2 chopping out all the silent spaces ).

I suppose the next trick they will try will be to create special cookies that record what videos you watch and if you've "grabbed" them or not. Then they might come up with a 'points' system that tells you you've reached your limit of streaming videos for a certain time.

Obviously, if they can, they will turn "grabbing videos" into a "pay-for" service. First they have to crack the cookie system and make it comprehensively uniform. The new legislation that forces web sites to make the visitors "AGREE" to cookies, is part of that slowly slowly catchy monkey, me thinks.

But, Java has to be running on your computer for this to work. Java has a bad track record for security issues.

However, so does Adobe flash player, recently too. I caught Adobe trying to register a Trojan in my windows registry earlier this year when I was attempting to install their latest version ( I had to, to access a government site I wanted to download a social work application form from, for a friend who'd failed to navigate all the IT mess of it )..

If you think about it logically, a perfect way for them to get a gateway sentry into your computer is the get into bed with essential peripheral app' companies like Adobe Flash and SUN Java. That's all they need to take over your whole computer. It's even simpler than doing deals with Microsoft or Apple. These essential services like flash or Java are multiplatform and cover everyone who ever does anything on the Internet.

There's a free program called FRAPS that records directly on your monitor. Simply choose the area to record on a page (here, it would a be the streaming video on youtube) and it saves directly on your system.

For now, I am using add ons from Firefox.
