2013 The Year of The Comet's and Meteor's or something more ominous?

I have heard back from some contacts and indeed there seems to be something to the rumors that these were not entirely natural events. The information I am getting as usual contradicts (Navy/Air Force Both think they should control Space) and I/we have to vet the info with other sources and discern where the truth is.

I cannot come right out with the who, how and specifics of what I was informed but you can read between the lines below as I "Speculate" on what could have happened. Anyone with Intel of their own from family/friends still in the system please share if you can clarify any points below. I HATE being used as a TOOL of Dis-Info so I am presenting the info as below to let you see what rings true to you. It has happened to me before so use your own judgment.

What did happen? Lets Speculate shall we?

1. DA14 had company when it flew by and Earth’s gravity pulled it in the day before and after the asteroid passed by.

2. DA14 just happened to be passing by Earth while we are going through a debris field in our Solar System. More main stream and VERY POSSIBLE!

Space Based weapons were being tested and DA14 was targeted and possibly shattered or some parts splintered off and played around in the eddies of Earth’s Gravity until pulled in at the various times and places. Remember, some of the meteor activity happened before the DA14 reached its closest point to Earth.

4. Group(s) used the passing of DA14 as cover for an attack on a Space Based Platform(s) (Literally held over the heads) that has been used to hold the planet hostage/ransom by either causing fake natural disasters or just outright attack by devastating weapons on infrastructure of countries that do not cooperate...

5. The NWO/Illuminati/Bankster Groups are getting incredibly desperate at the power they are losing and are pulling out all of the stops and have used the above mentioned weapons platform(s) to shoot a shot across the bow of the BRICS Alliance to have them back off.

I guess a "Speculation #7" is in order with reports around the web on Camelot and Devinecosmose. The latest speculation is more of a mixture of some of the others but I am giving it another number because of all of the latest releases of Info and Dis-Info. I cannot vouch either way for DW's sources on this one as there is activity going on all of the time. A planet like ours calls out like a beacon to the (What we understand for now as) "Multiverse".

So there are always intruders that are usually delt with but usually by those that "Watch Over". A planned mass landing or showing in the skies of earth by these "Same" little aliens is just something that I do not think can be verified. There are too many levels/levers/trick doors to go through of Info/DisInfo these days to get anything straight. It is just a sad fact we have to live with (AND too many trusted experts jump on info bandwagons too quickly lately, I have been confused and disturbed by this).

In my previous update where I announced my new Gaiam TV show, I also had a whole section on the mysterious Russian "meteorite" explosion. Let's review:


On Friday, February 15th, a huge, metallic object -- estimated as weighing 10 metric tons -- exploded over Russia with the force of a few kilotons.

The night sky became as bright as day. Sonic booms blasted car alarms into life. Fireballs rained down, and up to 1,200 people were injured.

The trail was 125 miles long. 20,000 emergency workers were rushed to the site. It was the largest "meteor" in a century.




I strongly wondered, at the time, what this was. Insider chatter has now revealed a sad but interesting answer.

Apparently, eight different events like this happened at the same time, around the world, that same day. This was only the brightest and loudest one.

It is believed that all eight events were UFO crashes -- not meteorites. Five of the crash sites were located by rapid-response crash teams from Majestic.

In each of the five sites, they found dead bodies of small humanoids, ranging from 10 to 12 inches in height -- and wreckage from their craft.

This was just two weeks after I wrote about these same people on my website -- using images from Kaleka and Greer's upcoming film, SIRIUS.

I also demonstrated their appearance in Russia and at Easter Island as revered, nonviolent teachers -- and givers of wisdom and technology.


TWO DIFFERENT OPINIONS

One insider heard this same story from fully four completely independent sources. The stories were very similar in every case. No one survived these crashes, but the bodies were still identifiable.

This particular insider did not have any information suggesting this was a deliberate shoot-down. He felt they may have been "coming in hot" and misjudged our atmosphere.

However, another insider with even higher connections informed me that this was almost certainly a coordinated shoot-down effort -- from our classified planetary defense grid.

Apparently there are tiny drones in our upper atmosphere that use advanced technology to track all objects in our airspace -- and will immediately zoom in on and destroy anything unfamiliar.

These ETs may have intended to make a grand entrance, just 14 days after their story went public. Instead they were blown out of the sky -- and murdered.

I was saddened to hear this story from such well-positioned and reliable insiders. This event could have been the mass sighting we were waiting for -- but obviously it did not end well for them.

However, the intel on this was so good that I do believe we will see a lot more where this came from -- and hopefully without such a violent ending.

After the meteor exploded, a "halo" appeared in the sky over Santiago del Estero just before sunrise. According to Nuevo Diario, a Santiago del Estero newspaper, Coghlan said the halo and the meteor explosion were unrelated.


The "halo" may have been caused by debris from the craft after its explosion. It may very well be that the push for Disclosure is coming from both sides, as it were -- and the stakes are equally deadly on either side.

I really dont think the United States would shoot an advanced weapon at Russia. It's much more plausible that
they shot at DA14 knocking it off it's path and a few pieces splintered off. Thus you see the events in Russia, Cuba and the US.

Looks like its official, the Air Force won’t be using any type of ICBM to carry conventional warheads around the world at record speed to carry out the Prompt Global Strike mission. There have been lots of questions about how the service would achieve it’s plan hit high value targets on almost any spot on the globe within hours or minutes of a strike being ordered.
One option was the notion of a conventional ICBM. A problem with that idea was that a lot of people worried an ICBM launch would be confused as a nuclear first strike. Not something you want to have happen.

Pentagon Revises Prompt Global Strike Effort

The U.S. Defense Department has elected not to incorporate standard ballistic missile system technology in the development of its conventional "prompt global strike" initiative, Arms Control Today reported in its April issue (see GSN, March 24).

The White House alerted Congress to the decision in February.

An MI5 source says the articles above are disinformation related to ongoing attempts to seize massive wealth controlled by the UK royal family. What is clear is that heavy infighting is going on at the top.
There are many seemingly unrelated events, notably meteorite falls and disease outbreaks, that may in fact be signs of cabal infighting. During the last week meteorites (rocks that actually land) and meteors (ones that explode in the sky) were reported in Russia, Japan, Cuba and Florida (were Obama was staying for a top secret “golf game”). Perhaps unrelatedly, a SARS like disease and or bird flu were reported in the UK, Mexico and Germany last week. Not to mention a major dam burst in China.
In the midst of all this Russia has dispatched nuclear bombers to threaten US bases while North Korea, acting as a proxy for Japan,

revealed to the world it had intercontinental nuclear missile capability. This was a message by the Japanese to the Chinese, Russians and Americans that it was not some stuffed turkey ready to be carved up.

With the Pope, Queen Beatrix, the Bushes and the Rockefellers out of the picture, the struggle now seems to be between backers of President Barak “Thunder of Satan” Obama, the British Monarchy, the gnostic illuminati and the Asian secret societies.

Obama was taken to Florida over the weekend for some secret mission and apparently happened to be there just in time for a meteor shower.

Is this a coincidence? Remember the Russian “meteorite” fall came after homosexually bonded Skull and Bones slave and opium secret society US Secretary of State John Kerry was repeatedly ignored by Russia’s foreign minister. It also came after two Russian nuclear bombers entered US airspace near the Guam military base in the Pacific. The photograph in the link above of the Pope making a masonic handshake with the Queen in front of a blonde boy in a kilt does raise a lot of questions.

It is true that most members of the British Commonwealth have been brought up with the Queen as a benevolent symbol with little real power. During my childhood she was presented as a symbol of all that was good and great about the British people and the British Empire (the bad stuff they did was not the Queen’s fault).

However, the Queen as a symbol may not be the same thing as the queen as a human being. A first cousin of the Queen has told me in the past about human sacrifices presided over by the Queen at Balmoral castle. This is what an MI5 source had to say about that: “Yes I have also been told the same by a credible source.” There is also plenty of evidence that Princess Diana was killed to protect the honour of the British royal family because she was pregnant with the child of her Muslim fiancée Dodi Fayed.

Then again there was the recent confirmed finding of the body of an Eastern European male (suspected of being linked to the heroin trade) at Sandhingham castle.

What the Queen needs to do, if she is to survive the ongoing onslaught, is to come clean about any skeletons in her closet and ask for the forgiveness of her people.

The MI5 source says that both the Queen and the Pope were symbolic figureheads of ancient bureaucratic organizations that were hostile towards them and chasing after the great wealth controlled by the British Monarchy and the Papacy. The CIA retorts that the Queen has been repeatedly caught trying to get her hands on assets that belong to the Global Collateral Accounts and not her.

Apart from Obama, the Queen and the Pope, there were other signs of high level action against the cabal last week.

In particular, there are signs of what may be an organized global boycott against cabal controlled corporations. Recently India has cancelled a $750 million Anglo-Italian helicopter deal over allegations of bribery. A French military aircraft sale to India is also on hold. Then there are the mysterious battery problems that have virtually stopped all Boeing aircraft sales since the beginning of this year. Then again there is the Russian ban on all Beef imports from the US. Are we seeing a pattern here?

The unrest in Europe, meanwhile, has spread East. Last week there were riots in Bulgaria following a recent drastic hike in energy prices, according to a source there. There will be more price hikes followed by more riots in Europe and the US.

In Asia, meanwhile, now that the Chinese New Lunar Year’s holidays are ending, the new regime of Xi Jinping will formally take over the reins of government. There will be lots of secret negotiations during the last part of February and, following that, the new government is expected to come out with an aggressive domestic and international agenda.

If the Chinese play their cards right and coordinate with the 180 nation BRICS group, they should be able to force an end to the cabal dominated post-war international system of governance. If they play their cards badly, for example by falling into the baited Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands trap, they could lose all their valuable soft power.

In the skies over the Chelyabinsk February 15 at about 9:30 local time, an explosion occurred. According to MOE, over the region was a meteor rain. Space monitoring devices before the explosion recorded activity in the lower atmosphere.

I appreciate the info. I was perplexed when I saw this video. It is amazing how many ways DISINFO can be injected into every topic no matter how pure the intent. This is why research and triple verification of info is paramount. I should have researched it further before posting.

I've included a scientifically-oriented thread in the link above that may be useful to our investigation of this "meteorite".


The one thing that strikes me the most is the little, bitty bit of "light" that seemed to be some sort of UFO/missile that appeared to be flying from behind right smack into the falling "meteorite" that was falling around 33,000 mph.


All of you saw that little, bitty (no doubt huge in size, though, in real terms) come from behind the "meteorite", right? What the hell was it?


Does anyone think that any nominal military anywhere in the world has a missile that could not only fly much faster than 33,000 mph (it looked like that it was going anywhere from 2.5 times+ faster, so we are looking at possibly 60,000+ to 100,000 mph+ ... or a bit less ...) but accurately hit the damn "meteorite" dead-on while it was doing an arc into our skies up at 200,000 ft?


Then it seemed that right before impact of the UFO/missile from behind, there appeared to be a bunch of consistently-shaped (narrow, cigar shapes, like missiles) to be shooting out from that "meteorite" in front of it going much faster than the nominal 33,000 mph speed of the meteorite?


I, for one, don't think that ANY nominal military anywhere in the world could possibly develop any defensive missile that could be that fast and accurate; however, it's possible that the goddamn Black Operations may have such missiles of intense speeds/accuracies that could rival some lower-level ET craft's abilities for defense/offense, yes? It's possible, but I don't know enough to be able to speculate intelligently on this specific aspect.


And I think that it's entirely possible that the Black Operations may have had a station (satellite, weapons station, etc) built INSIDE a meteorite, so the Black Operations may have intentionally crashed that craft into Russia right when the asteroid was making its pass.


The trajectory/timing of the asteroid was well known in advance, so it's easy to see the Black Operations (these guys have technologies that are alleged to be easily 1,000 years in advance of our nominal space capacities) to prepare for the asteroid event with an intentional fall of a major meteorite right at the heart of Russia, which is a key nation of the BRICS alliance that had recently aired a major expose on their REN-TV program that was watched by millions of Russians?


Let's say that this little UFO/missile did not hit the meteorite up at 200,000 feet, would it have been possible for the meteorite to have survived father down into the atmosphere more fully intact? If it's possible that it could have survived farther/deeper into the Russian atmosphere, I imagine that it would have created a far bigger explosion and blast wave than it did, yes?


I imagine that a far bigger blast wave/explosion could have done far greater damage that would have been equivalent to thousands of nuclear bombs going off in the atmosphere down closer to the Earth, yes? If an event of that scale had happened, imagine the impact on the denizens of our Earth? Utterly massive. Entire cities wiped out and easily hundreds of thousands of people killed/injured.

Somewhat "hidden investigations" re-concluded that the so-called Tunguska "meteorite" was actually an atomic-powered craft weighing over 25,000 tons, which exploded approx 3 miles up (ie witnesses saw a mushroom cloud after the explosion, night turned to day for several days, 1,000 square miles of the area is still radiated (higher than normal radiation levels in trees, soil plants & ash, and it's flight path made an abrupt U-turn from Eastward to Westward just before it exploded).

Particle analysis could not be identified as meteoric in origin but contained small amounts of metals, including copper and germanium (important in the construction of electrical equipment). The whole area was extraordinarily reminiscent of Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

When it first overflew the Gobi desert, China, witnesses described it as "cylindrical in shape, with multi-coloured smoke exiting from the rear".

In Washington DC, what appeared to be a missile crashed into the Pentagon. There were no signs of the titanium engines which could not have disintegrated or melted due to fire. Additionally, in the 3rd world Republic of Mali, French and British troops have been assembled to fight "insurgents" while the United States has vowed $50 million in support as well as potential troops as this war escalates.

The real reason why troops are there, which is one of the main reasons for many wars, is for their main resource of gold, but no world leader will readily admit it.

It turns out the meteor that landed in Russia last week was a bit bigger than the 10 tons first reported. About 1,000 times bigger.

When a hunk of rock raced out of the morning skies over Russia on Friday and exploded with nearly 500 kilotons of energy, early size estimates from the Russian Academy of Sciences that were carried by the Associated Press, Reuters and other news wires pegged it on the small size, with a weight of about 10 tons.

Later in the evening, after studying infrasound data from stations around the world, NASA released a new estimate revising that first guess upward by a thousand-fold: The meteorite actually weighed closer to 10,000 tons, scientists said -- approximately as much as 170 M1 Abrams tanks.

“My guess is that someone eyeballed the videos and made an educated guess,” said Margaret Campbell-Brown, associate professor in the department of physics and astronomy at the University of Western Ontario. “This event was so much bigger than anything we've seen on video that it doesn't surprise me the guess was off by three orders of magnitude.”

That poor estimate underscores the daunting task scientists face today: While NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program currently tracks about 10,000 objects through the heavens, there are far, far more smaller objects that are simply too tiny to track.

“If you think about objects the size of the one that came into Russia, you’re probably looking at 100 million up there. Of those likely to intersect Earth, there’s less, maybe 100,000,” said K.T. Ramesh, director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute and a professor of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins. “Space is pretty big.”

And the size of those smaller objects -- whether they’re 10 tons or 10,000 tons -- makes them impossible to track with current technology, he said.

“In general, we're pretty good at seeing things that are 1 kilometer and up in diameter, and have trouble seeing things that are less than 100 meters in diameter. The big problem is knowing where they are -- once you know where to look, you can find even the smaller objects,” he said.

For comparison, NASA currently believes the Russian meteorite was about 49 feet in diameter, or 15 meters. (Asteroid 2012 DA14, which NASA tracked on its flight near our planet on Friday, was approximately 150 feet in diameter, or 45 meters.)

“A good analogy is finding a few pennies scattered over an acre of dirt. If you know where to look, you have no trouble seeing them. But if you just look over the whole field, your chance of finding a penny is pretty small,” Ramesh told FoxNews.com.

Without sensors aimed directly at the incoming meteor, initial data was scarce. As other bits of data came in, scientists were able to hone their estimates of the size of the meteor, explained Edwin Bergin with the University of Michigan’s Department of Astronomy.

“Reports say that the network used to detect and infer nuclear explosions led to the revision,” he told FoxNews.com. “I think it just is better information that took time to filter out.”

The Chelyabinsk Meteor: Separating Fact From Fiction

Almost as soon as footage of this extraordinary event hit the internet, so too did the conspiracy theories...

"This has all the earmarks of a false flag event."
"It wasn't a meteor at all, it was a secret weapons test."
"I think it was a top secret satellite crashing back to earth."
"The meteor was 10 times lower than what we've been told, that town should have been vaporized!"

Everyone please take a deep breath and calm down. This was an unprecedented event to be sure, but nothing more or less than a meteor strike, albeit a rather large one.

Just the Facts, Please

NASA, NORAD and the Russian Federal Space Agency have all verified the facts and figures of this meteor: it was approximately 56 feet in diameter and weighed around 10,000 tons--likely a nickle-iron meteorite with an extremely high density. This meteor and it’s effects–by the numbers–makes perfect scientific sense. The physical effects of a 500 kiloton blast at 90,000 feet would look and feel exactly as it did. It seemed lower than it was in the video because it was so intensely burning. The size of the pocket of superheated, ionized gas around the shock boundary was many times larger than the object itself. The human eye simply wouldn’t be able to detect an object 56′ in diameter (stationary or moving) at 90,000 feet, but something burning up at potentially Mach 57 (44,000 mph) is quite another story. Even if the actual entry speed turned out to be half that speed, it's still devastatingly fast.

Why Didn't a Blast 30x Larger Than Hiroshima Vaporize Everything?

Take a look at footage from “Operation Grapple X” where the UK detonated a series of hydrogen bombs over Christmas Island in the late 1950′s. Grapple X mk2 was 1.8 megatons detonated at only 8,000 feet (asl) over land and within 20 miles of 1,200 troops standing out in the open. They were hit with a shock wave that knocked a few people off their feet accompanied by an earth shattering bang (as you can see and hear in the footage). There was naturally some damage to structures on the island directly beneath the blast, but nothing was leveled or vaporized, and we’re talking about a blast 3 times larger and 8x lower in altitude than this meteor was. Keep in mind that this meteor was also traveling at an extraordinary speed, so the shock wave is actually conical as it’s impacting the ground. Even the initial largest blast wave would still be affected by the forward momentum of the object. The Tunguska shock wave was later found to have impacted the ground in the shape of a butterfly due to it’s angle of trajectory.


An animation of the meteor's trajectory and breakup has been produced, courtesy of Analytical Graphics, and it recently came to light that Meteosat-9 also managed to capture the atmospheric explosion from space. A joint venture of the European Space Agency and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites Meteosat-9 was launched in 2005 to keep watch on Earth's weather from space. The satellite also took video of the fireball.

Could it Have Been a Satellite?

There is absolutely no way this was a satellite or man-made object because of two very important factors:

1) Mass. The largest satellite in orbit (aside from the Hubble) is the NRO’s L-32 spysat which tips the scales at 5,200 kg or 5.5 tons (estimated). Even the International Space Station (440 tons) doesn't come anywhere close to matching the sheer density of this meteor. Besides, if something we put in orbit was going to catastrophically deorbit above Russia, I'm pretty certain everyone would be warned ahead of time. Mistakes like that start world wars. Interestingly, there seems to be some discrepancy over the actual weight of this bolide. Russian scientists say the meteor weighed about 10 tons before it entered the Earth's atmosphere, and broke apart 30–50 km (20–30 miles) above ground level. NASA estimated the diameter of the bolide at about 17 meters and its mass at about 10,000 tons. Since NASA likely had input from other sources--namely NORAD--I'll stick with their estimation for the time being, but it's still open to debate as far as I'm concerned. Looking at the relative visual sizes of these objects it wouldn't seem like you could cram the entire density of a warship into an object exponentially smaller, but it's entirely possible when you're talking about an iron-nickel meteor. Have you ever picked up a baseball-sized meteor and held it in your hand? I have, and it was deceivingly, freakishly heavy.

2) Velocity. A satellite re-entering the atmosphere would do so from orbital velocity which is about one-quarter of the speed at which this meteor was traveling, nor would there be a massive explosion and concussive shock wave like this. That blast was from the sheer density of the object. It may have only been 56 feet in diameter, but it weighed more than a Ticonderoga class missile cruiser! When you put size and density into perspective it's easy to see how a 10,000 ton rock hurtling through the atmosphere at 44,000 mph could result in a 500 kiloton blast.


Finally, there were actual pieces of the rock that impacted earth along with evidence of those impact points, one of which was in a nearby frozen lake. Russian authorities have already begun the hunt to find any remaining fragments of the meteor, which are extremely valuable not only to scientific study, but from a monetary standpoint as well.

But it Looked So Much Lower to the Ground in the Videos!

The visual evidence we have to go on is based upon Russian dashcams and security camera footage, which are mediocre at best, but can still provide us with some valuable data. For instance, the speed can be fairly accurately measured based upon it's transit speed across the sky and height relative to the ground. In the video footage it certainly seems to be much closer to the ground than 90,000 feet, but it's quite deceiving because of the sheer intensity of the burn. We also know it's relative altitude based upon the time it took for the sound of the shockwave to reach the ground, which was just over a minute. Sound (at sea level) travels at approximately 1,115 feet per second. Based upon, let's say 80 seconds, well that works out to 89,200 feet. In the grand scheme of things, that's not very high at all.


To put things into perspective, the Tunguska event--which was most likely a comet fragment--exploded only 6 miles (31,000 feet) above ground level with the force of nearly 30 megatons and as we know that blast knocked down an estimated 80 million trees over an area covering 2,150 square kilometres (830 square miles). It is estimated that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale. An explosion of this magnitude is capable of destroying a large metropolitan area. If the Chelyabinsk meteor had exploded at that height we would have certainly seen much more widespread damage and likely more fragments actually impacting the ground.

If it Looks, Sounds and Acts Like a Meteor--It's Probably a Meteor

I think this was just what it was–a meteor strike over a populated area. Nothing more, nothing less. There are an estimated 5-10 meteors of this size which strike Earth every couple months but the vast majority of them are over oceans or polar regions where they go unnoticed by the population. I find it quite extraordinary to have actually witnessed something like this in our lifetime.

There will always be extraordinary conspiracy theories surrounding extraordinary natural events, but they also require extraordinary evidence to back them up. This wasn't a wayward UFO, it wasn't a military experiment gone awry, nor was it one of the Decepticons coming from the dark side of the moon. Chelyabinsk will go down in the history books as one of the most well documented cases of a meteor strike on record and we should all be thrilled to have seen such an astronomical treat as it unfolded in real time.

In this video update, Dr. Brown concludes that 15 February 2013 meteor event over Russia, the largest since the Tunguska event, coupled with the close approach of the roughly 50 metre asteroid 2012 DA14 thar occurred about 15 hours later may constitute the meteor or asteroid event referenced in the Farsight Institute study, which predicted a global coastal event destroying most coastal cities on the planet in June 2013. Dr. Brown states he does no expect any other meteor or coastal event between February 16, 2013 and June 1, 2013 based on the Farsight study. Dr. Brown refers to the holographic nature of reality and to the his remote viewers having possibly viewed a global coastal event happening in June 2013 on Earth in some other timeline or holographic version of Earth or parallel universe.

Some have speculated that Planet X would be responsible for the June 2013 global coastal event predicted by the Farsight Institute study. Dr. Brown's interim update appears to suggest that Dr. Brown does not expect any other meteor or coastal event between February 16, 2013 and June 1, 2013 and that the Farsight Institute report states that no global coastal event caused by Planet X can be expected through June 1, 2013.

very smart, now whatever happens he'll be right. or will he? actually he just made a mistake with this prediction that the global coastal event won't happen because

a) to be a "coastal" event the meteorite would have had to drop into an ocean,
b) would have had to be a lot bigger than the tiny bauble that fell down in russia and
c) his remote viewers clearly saw people leaving the "target zones" on june 1st which means the hit happened maybe days or weeks earlier but not several months

so none of the characteristics of DA14 met the criteria for the global coastal culprit. all things point to the fact that it's going to happen, alongside several other notable events, all around the same time between late march and late may 2013. so much for springtime depression.

just listened to courtney brown's video clip. i wonder if he was threatened to create something like this, or else...

he's probably perfectly aware that he's talking complete bs but the results of the farsight experiment have become such a major prediction in this circus that certain people are getting uncomfortable with this kind of data out in the open. if he basically refutes the earlier predictions that takes some wind out of the sails of doom mongers and potential survivors, even though everyone with a shred of common sense will realize that none of this babble about DA14 passing by in our universe and not passing by in the remote viewed universe fits the data.

Moscow believes an operable national defense against threats from outer space can be built within 10 years’ time. The 500-kiloton explosion of a space bolide above the Urals region has sped-up allocation of some $2 billion to prevent future threats.

Russian scientists have presented a federal program designed to counteract space threats. Elaborated by the Institute of Astronomy at Russia’s Academy of Sciences and the Central Engineering Research Institute, Russia’s leading space industry enterprise, the program has already been approved by Roskosmos, the national space agency.

The program has nothing to do with Hollywood sci-fi movie scenarios; no lasers, annihilators or Bruce Willis drilling a huge peace of rock rushing towards Earth.

The system will consist of a network of robotic telescopes monitoring space around our planet, some of them delivered to orbit, others operating from the surface.

Destruction of an asteroid in emergency cases may be performed by a rocket with a powerful megaton-class thermonuclear warhead. If the threat is detected early, more advanced means of changing an asteroid’s orbit may be considered.

The program costing 58 billion rubles (over $1.9 billion) has already been handed over to the head of Russia’s defense industry, Deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin who is expected to present it to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Lidia Rykhlova from the Institute of Astronomy (RAS) who presented the project, reported that Russia will need to modernize and fully computerize the 60 cm lens telescopes it already has. Several larger telescopes with 2 meter lens will have to be additionally installed.

Rykhlova announced that an analytical center will be created to collect the data from various sources and analyze it in real time mode.

However, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has denied reports about the Russian government’s intentions to spend 58 billion rubles on asteroid defense system.

Professor of the Moscow State University, head of the laboratory for space monitoring Vladimir Lipunov told Interfax news agency that it will take about two years to modernize all Russia’s existing nine telescopes with the diameter of the lens of 40 centimeters and unite them into one network. A network of larger telescopes across the globe could be ready in five years.

“It will cost a mere trifle. What [Russian billionaire] Roman Abramovich paid for Chelsea [football club] would cover all the costs of the project,” Lipunov said.

According to Forbes during the eight years of owning Chelsea Abramovich spent $1.3 billion on the football club.

Lipunov stressed that tracking and forecasting space threats is more real and efficient than engaging air defense systems to deal with meteorites in the atmosphere, as people could be evacuated from an impact zone in advance.

Asteroid threat is growing by the year

“There are a lot of asteroids orbitingclose to Earth and every year up to 1,000 more are being discovered,” Lidia Rykhlova said, specifying that three years ago the number of known asteroids passing close to our planet was about 7,000 and now their number has grown up to around 9,400.

Most of the relatively large asteroids, with a diameter of one kilometer and larger are already known.

“We know about 90 per cent of kilometer-class asteroids, their orbits are well known and predictable. As for the smaller 40-50 meter ones – we still have insufficient observation apparatus. The more we observe – the more of them we find,” Rykhlova acknowledged.

If the space object is discovered beforehand, at least a month prior to possible collision with Earth, there is time to find out its size and consider various measures of its elimination.

The execution of a really complicated operation will require at least a year, Rykhlova pointed out.

“Therefore our emergency aid is a rocket with a nuclear warhead,” she concluded.

This just shows, experts get on tv and act like they are sure what it was, but they are still coming up with theories. SO ARE WE!

A race for cosmic souvenirs has begun after scientists said there were still many pieces of the meteorite that fell to earth (video) near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk last week waiting to be found.

The extraterrestrial origin of 53 rock fragments collected on the frozen surface of Lake Chebarkul was confirmed during analysis conducted by the Urals Federal University in the early hours of Monday.

But this is just the start of the process of gathering the debris left by the large meteorite, which exploded on entering the earth's atmosphere and hit the ground in a series of fireballs on Friday.

Viktor Grokhovsky, a member of the Russian Academy of Science's meteorite committee, has been put in charge of the scientific search operation. "There are a lot more fragments to be discovered in many other places … it's only a matter of time," he said.

The search is being concentrated at the moment around a six-metre wide hole in Lake Chebarkul, about 50 miles from Chelyabinsk, discovered by locals shortly after the meteorite hit the ground.

Military divers spent much of the weekend scouring the bottom of the lake, but were hampered by poor visibility and found nothing.

Despite the failure of the divers, there was still likely to be a piece of meteorite in the lake of at least 50cm in diameter, said Grokhovsky.

Local officials said on Sunday that the formal search was being abandoned, but scientists will continue the hunt. No one from the eight-strong scientific team has yet been able to examine the whole surface of the lake because of a cordon put in place by the authorities over the weekend.

Analysis of the pieces recovered so far, none of which had a diameter greater than 1cm, suggests that 10% of the meteorite was made up of iron. Traces of sulphite and the mineral olivine were also present.

"It was a stone meteorite that belongs to a class of ordinary chondrite meteorites," said Grokhovsky.

Likely to be named Chebarkul after the lake where the first fragments were found, the meteorite is the biggest such object to hit the earth in more than 100 years.

Within the academic community there appeared to be a difference of opinion on Monday as to the exact nature of the object, when some experts said it was conceivable that it was a comet that had struck southern Russia at 9.20am on Friday.

"In Chelyabinsk we saw a type of comet in which there was almost no meteorite remaining," said Alexander Bagrov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Astronomy Institute, Interfax reported.

"It was mainly made up of a mass of ice, of which no trace is left."

The argument reflects the same debate that raged after the last big meteorite impact, the so-called Tunguska event in Siberia in 1908. For decades afterwards Russian scientists, trying to explain the absence of an obvious impact crater, argued over whether the blast was caused by a meteorite or a small comet.

While the intellectual debate was beginning on Monday, the clean-up operation in Chelyabinsk was winding down. The shockwave caused by the meteorite shattered windows across the region and injured about 1,500.

One woman was transferred to Moscow for treatment over the weekend and about 50 people remained in hospital. With night-time temperatures hovering around -20C, glass prices jumped as people rushed to replace broken panes.
