For me, manifesting isn't something I do, it's an approach that permeates all of life. Life is a manifestation. There have been years in my life where I was trudging through what I guess might be called karma, where I couldn't get anything to levitate at my command, speaking metaphorically. It was one heartache or frustration after another followed by 'luck' or the temporary illusion that I was being given a break, then on to the next disproof that I had a say in my reality. What a mess it seemed when I was learning the 'rules,' even 'believed' them, but couldn't get them to work. I look back now and see how unconsciously I was living and of course how those experiences matched my underlying and unprocessed beliefs at the time.

Its one thing to lay claim as a creator to every wonderful thing that comes to me and another to lay claim to something greater than I am aware of yet that is the 'doer' as well as the mystery beyond knowing. Manifesting is a convenient term for getting what we want or need but it implies that its a part-time 'thing' one does rather than an embodiment of love that could happily go in any number of directions. However, I'm quite adept at using it in emergencies to turn the tide from one of unnecessary 'inconvenience' back to freedom, empowerment and joy. The key is to look beyond appearances all the time, viewing events from the greater unconscious that knows the inner and the outer are kissing cousins, not strangers. So, what goes on inside me imprints itself on my world and vice versa...and neither is better than the other, except when I cling to the thoughts and rules of manifesting that say the inner is better than the outer. Everything that we're aware of is already a manifestation, including us or we wouldn't perceive it. Even our unconscious is already manifested even when though we're unaware of it, by definition. The 'void' is the unmanifest and is the only point of entry for anything original. All the rest is already created before we get our hands on it, from our faintest thought of beauty to a full-on confrontation of affirmation against unwanted circumstances. Manifesting is like sculpting a copy of our dreams using clay that was created in the beginning and is more akin to manipulating existing substance than making something out of nothing. Nontheless, it's powerful, beautiful and often quite a handy skill to have at your fingertips in a pinch.

I think you are right, we manifest from a deeper and more all-encompassing place than my OP suggests. I also think that the concept of doing right in all things helps create a "positive" energy signature. I try, for example, not to practice little acts of passive dishonesty - if I am given too much change in a shop, I will amend the situation by returning the excess. We could console ourselves with saying "but hey, maybe I manifested this money?", but what we manifested I would say is the test! The poor, underpaid cashier will pay for our windfall in the end, so the universe probably isn't offering us a gift, but a chance to raise our vibration

Manifesting is an interesting one. Here is something from my website that I wrote for a workshop a while ago:

Quote Our outer reality is a perfect reflection of our inner world. What we put out comes back to us. But it is not JUST what we CONSCIOUSLY think that determines the state of our outer world. Some people try to follow ‘The Secret” and end up working to push away negative thoughts and focus only on positive thoughts, believing this will allow them to manifest their dreams. However what we actually send out is not just our thoughts, it is essentially an energetic signature that captures all aspects of our being. Both our conscious thoughts AND unconscious thoughts are reflected back to us in our outer world. When we become aware of this we can start to see negative experiences in our outer reality, not as punishment or a sign of failure, but rather as reminders of areas inner healing that is needed.

A lot of fearful thoughts come from parts of us that we don’t want to look at. Parts that somewhere along the way we came to believe were undesirable and thus we unconsciously pushed deep down. These parts, feeling rejected and unworthy, actually have a lot of power in our lives, and are the source of much pain and fear. When we are ready to open ourselves and reconnect with these parts we begin to heal and change our energy signature. As more and more of our aspects are healed with love, the more our energetic signature becomes love and the more our outer world reflects the love within. The key to this process is willingness to be open, honest and accepting (all attributes of love)in a process of deep self reflection. When we can accept both the beautiful, gentle and kind aspects, AND those we have labelled as undesirable we are well on our way towards healing our inner fractions and returning to a state of LOVE.
For me it feels like the universe responds to our whole energy signature, and this is ultimately what we see reflected in our reality. So while it is possible to have isolated manifesting successes, unless we do our deep work we will also manifest unwanted situations into our reality.

Another key that I have found in manifesting is unattachment. I play a game with parking. I set my intent to get a park right where I need to go. When I started this game I didn't realize it but I was attached to the outcome. If I got the spot I felt like I was in the flow and doing things right...but then of course when I didn't get the spot I felt like I had failed, and had slipped from the flow. When I realized this and consciously unattached myself from the outcome my success rate when right up.

I also believe that my higher-self knows what I need...more than my 3d self. I don't want to try to control my reality too much...I have a nice relationship with me on the otherside and trust 'I' will provide and create for my highest good.

I will also share my newest little manifestation treasure. I like to leave room for the universe to surprise me. The other day I bought a painting at a second hand shop for $20. When I looked up the name 'Coutaud' signed at the bottom, I discovered it was painted by French surrealist Lucien Coutaud. He illustrated Rimbaud's season in Hell and met Picasso and Matisse. How fun and exciting!
