My thoughts are with the people in New South Wales, Australia, who have been effected by the massive storm that has caused so much damage.

My hope is that the flash flooding doesn't cause much more damage.

My thoughts are also with those who have lost loved ones.

Mister Schindler mailed me. I don't know the man, but he had good news.

Two things are interesting about this and the timing. Schindler, Oskar, the historical figure. And the first name: M. which happens to also be the name of a deceased young man whom we had just recently discussed I consider this to be a yes- or go-ahead-answer.

As you may have been able to follow on the news there is a lot going on with boats trying to reach Europe from Africa and the Middle East. Of course, this has been going on for years. People have been dying for years too, just not so massively. Why people massively have to die to bring about that blink of an eye: oh, look over there, something's happening God only knows.

This "clandestine" crossing has also been used as a political weapon, against Europe, by some countries in North Africa, as in: watch out, or we'll just pretend we didn't see all those people heading for the seas,...and coming your way. Of course Europe wants the less is more, so, so far, it worked. That is, until the Middle East started boiling again and the influx from different angles was not so easy to control anymore. The Netherlands were among the first to heavily debate it. They're not done yet, apparently one party is persistent in insisting illegal immigrants go back asap. That was national. Yesterday, I believe, the EU member states sat together about the urgent issue.

They interviewed a Swedish representative (sorry TV-news, name went by, flash of second) I found her input very humane, she said it wasn't fair how all member states concentrate the hot potato in the countries where these things happen, namely Greece and Italy, and that there should be a fair division.

Italy has been ringing the alarm for years. Human rights watches having been ringing alarm bells too at how Greece is treating the illegal immigrants flooding the land...but yea, what European country do you think is going to say: Oh me me me, please let me have the immigrants, oh please. It's cynical, I know, and a very sad observation. Because, why should it be cynical at all?

They interviewed a lady on Malta, another end station for "illegal" boat immigrants, and she said we are all one, we are all humans (about why these people leave their countries and their impossible situations, which people for a long time took for granted, like it was a luxury problem). And so in an ideal world, yes, it shouldn't be cynical at all, European countries should be saying: Oh me me me, please let me have the immigrants, oh please, let me help. Because in that ideal scenario they would care about Italy and Greece's problems and the wider world's and maybe that Union would finally start being credible.

And of course the reticency also ties into experiences with migrants already present in EU countries, some of which already in next-next-next generations (Italians, Turks, Moroccans). There are problems, yes, and everyone is blaming everyone for who's responsible: it's the migrants (they come from uncivilised backgrounds, they'll never learn), it's the local government (it's not doing enough, it sets the wrong priorities, etc.), oh and it's racism, oh, and... :zip lips: the government of the country of origins. Where are you Morocco? Where are you Turkey? Where are you guys to speak up when stuff happens? We are now in the 3rd, 4th generations, good point, but not like you were very present in the overall development of the 1st generation workers that came here, and they could have used every bit of help, which nearly always came from the local Belgian people. All these countries of origins should be very ashamed of themselves for trying to take credit for the work that Belgium did with these people.

The Belgian government provided an educational framework for their children, social provisions, leisure provisions, and job opportunities (yes, there were good times in the past, never forget),...They invested in these people and now the countries of origins want to run away with the profit. And it doesn't help that parts of the guest country are losing faith in their original guests because it makes it all the more easy for the country of origins to demonise the guest country and make it more attractive to turn to them. Every person is free to do what they want, of course but the way it happens...Every year comes May/June, lots of happy travel adds on country of origin's local TV, with boats, cars and planes arriving back to the promised land, all kinds of assistance when we step out of the plane, yea right (Oh, now they know we exist): Our fellow-...fill in blanks (Moroccans, Turks, Tunisians,...). Do come on vacation, if you can, every year, and spend a lot of money in this beautiful country (that you had no reason to leave in the first place, what were you thinking anyway).

The countries demand loyalty from as far up as the 4th generations. Why? Just why? What binds us? Please don't pretend you care, and please don't use religion to try to bind something that you let break a long time ago.

    Okay, end of this rant.

Now, let's see what Europe is going to do. I heard this morning they were going to divide the boat survivors fairly over the member countries.

And Schindler (wiki)? Well, he had a plan, in very turbulent times. We need a good plan too. A very good plan for these turbulent times.

One thing to remember is the factor of crime which increases when refugees flood a stable country where infra-structure and social aid are available.

When Costa Rica got flooded by Nicaraguans during the Sandinista period the only sector of society that did well was construction and hardware stores as families had to protect their homes with iron bars from break-ins. All of urban inhabited Costa Rica today looks like a zoo. No more open windows without wrought iron, even as they will fish out your belongings with a stick.

I have lived in two such countries which before this type of invasion were relatively crime free. Experienced several break-ins in both, and which is why I now live in a remote region, and would probably escape still further if another wave of immigrants brought a crime wave wher we now live.
How wonderful to have governments open their arms to the third worlds refugees and really, they deserve to be applauded, but, unless they immediately start programs which educate the newcomers in how to get assistence and jobs, and learn to integrate without assaulting their hosts with burglaries and rapes, they will never attract decent people into the political arena. The job is just so hard, and the problems so overwhelming that the only way they get something out of it is by sneakily paying themselves a little extra or gladly accept it when someone smears their hands with the odd bribe.

Because this is the root of corruption, when life is so difficult and even traumatic that people's survival thinking become habitual, and in the end people on both sides have only one thought left: "the whole world owes me".

the difference between countries norms, values, beliefs is enourmous as well. And some values clash when put together.

For example, when I lived in Turkey, which overall is quite developed (the poor in Turkey were truly not poorer than in Canada), I finally understood that you are defined as a untrustworthy until proven the contrary. Prove your trust, and this with time elapse and always the same behavior, same words, always. And then maybe, just maybe, you will be trustworhty.

This is the exact oppositve in North America. Here the culture was saying - give a chance to the runner. Non guily untill proven guilty. Trust, and if something proves you you should not, then stop.

Both of these values and beliefs clash when put together. And it is always, for some reasons, the "do not trust, everyone is a crook" mentality that wins.

So my own culture has passed from a trusting one - giving the benefit of the doubt, to a no one is trustworthy culture (which for us is equivalent to everyone is a crook), within 25 years. And more and more in depth governmental and civil employees corruption.

And more of, everyone is a crook and we even have the permission to yell at anyone in the street for example (never seen 30 years ago). The respect is gone.

Not because one way of doing is better than the other, but because when put together they clash.

Everything was running fine in Turkey, because everyone think the same. So you inflate what you say by 50% because others will cut it by 50% anyhow. But a Quebecor who just say what is will not survive there. But a Turk inflating everything by 50% will make a bundle in Québec because we do not cut it, we take it as is. Not our fault, just the way of thinking that clashes. With time though, and with more contact, people come to get enough. And distrust starts. The receiving culture has changed.

The survivalist culture biaises wins, at all times it seems.

And yes, Ulli, you are right, this has to do with a culture of survival. Not that you have to be a rich culture to give the benefit of the doubt. Costa Rica was not rich, yet people did not need bars in their window. But the influx of people with other norms and values has hit their culture. One was a culture based on trust and living, the other based on a culture of survival.

We just had parliamentary elections here in the weekend. It's safe to say that the results couldn't have been much worse. I don't have any faith in politicians, I have put my faith in good people who know what they are doing. I guess just really have to take politics with humor or else you will lose your sanity. Then again, it could happen anyways!

And who said that mother nature didn't have a sense of humor?

Flowers from my garden for the Village.
This morning I will be getting a visit from the principal of the school next to our property
and will be making a proposal to her, regarding my plans to start a plant nursery.
She has some plant nursery projects going there.
The kids bring her these saplings from their home gardens, and I will offer to buy some of them,
which will bring extra funds to her school. Looks to me like a win win situation.

I didn't know that about Costa Rica. Sounds heavy. I must say I'm not comfortable with a direct link between the influx of foreigners and an increase in crime rates. There are undoubtedly more examples of places where refugees add up and countries must find good solutions, which I doubt metal bars can be in the long run.

I was looking into some DNA-routes, a while ago. You know, like these. A dna-sample is analysed and you can choose to have either or both dna ancestry from maternal and paternal side looked into. This is an example of a Belizean. :

from a forum on biodiversity (link)

When I look at these stories, I'm amazed at the route some of us made through history. It does seem that many* of us are a result of (sometimes urgent) movement. Ice age, drought, wars, famine, but also, love, work, hobbies/fascinations, and people move on, like they always have. Only now, it's different. Or is it? What happened in history when people started mass-migrating? We could check our history books and see if we can learn anything.

*Is there a line that never moved?

It's a very interesting way to wake up one's senses.

I did the virtual scanning session with Julian. It picked up on my blood pressure and allergy issues! I have started the color therapy sessions and I am feeling a difference after four days.

It may be worth a look at the sky's tonight as The Lyrid meteor shower arrives. Fingers crossed for a clear starry night.

The visit with the school principal went really well. She is wide awake and aware.
We could not have a better neighbor. And as I was giving her the description of what I visualized as our future botanical garden she got the image clearly in her own mind, via transfer.
    She is truly a gem.
