    Hello to All.

    Today, I was invited to my sister’s daughter-in-law baby shower. Included were the moms’ kids, and lot and lots of babies. It was held in a hotel with full breakfast and dinner buffet and drinks of all kinds. (One of the financial benefits from mother, mother-in-law, step-mothers itching to welcome in their first grand child.)

    This was new and a great idea. We were instructed to not wrap the gifts. They were put on display. I surmised that guests used the time to eat and greet at our assigned seating. And, it saves trees, the dumps and dollars.

    A niece shared that her five year old daughter, who’s in kindergarten, was one of four girls in a classroom of fourteen. I inquired on how many other kindergartens in the system. One other and the ratio was about the same. If this is accurate, it’s very telling.

    My niece also shared that her daughter got a second notice sent home because she didn’t do her homework. When the niece asked her daughter why, she replied, “I didn’t want to.”

    My heart aches for these poor little ones. Common core = frustrate these light sparks and dumb them down.

    All in all it was a fun time. Then my unpredictable “time to leave in ninja-invisibility-style” gene switched on. I altered my frequency and walked out without notice. Back to my no-clock-time cave. It gets cozier and cozier as the years roll along.

    Ha, the child within. You made me smile. My mother is very hectic in the kitchen and whenever she organises something she makes sure to have a large helping crew of sisters-in-law (totally mismatched with what the kitchen can actually carry). Usually they are ready long before the guests arrive. For some inexplicable reason she likes to have me hanging there in the kitchen as well...for wallpaper, I think. I get no tasks because she's worried I'll mess up and embarrass her in front of the guests. Sometimes I get onions to peel, but that's if I'm lucky. Usually I just have to be there, stationed...just in case. So, diners like that, if required, I'm present, greet the guests, small-talk, but soon enough, I is gone. Come home and then I call my mother. She'll ask: Where are you??
    And I'll say: Oh, I'm at home.

    Yes, and a great loss of a great artist.
    First time in ages that I didn't find out right away by being on my computer,
    but had to receive the news via an overseas phone call.

    The question came up whether the energy released by all these artists' deaths this year might help the rest of humanity in some way.
    I sincerely hope so.

    P.S. Nothing wrong with short posts, Meeradas, if they get a message across.

    Some may have wanted a 'Atlantean Power Crystal'.

    Well, they are so close to being back on the world stage that I decided to just.... let that one go (fly)....

    Never say I didn't give anyone any trillion dollar ideas...(hint: it ain't the money)

    Quote Posted by Carmody (here)
    I have said, at times that I could construct "Atlantean Power Crystals". I've been meaning to get around to it....

    Firstly, such a device is constructed of quartz crystal, due to it's transmission of a wide variety of wavelengths.

    Secondly, it is constructed with a purified nano/atomic dispersed dopant. (gold, whatever is chosen)

    Thirdly, it is constructed where the solidus state for the dopant and the quartz glass are different. (which is the norm, most dopants have a lower melt point than quartz crystal).

    Fourthly, the crystal is slowly cooled under controlled conditions to get the dopant and quartz to go into a solidus condition in a very controlled way/manner. Depends on the end point desired and what can be done.

    Fifthly, most importantly, the key point, is that it is brought from the liquid form into the solidus form, under electrical loading, and also, possibly, magnetic loading, and possibly under pressure loading, or physical excitation, or all at the same time.

    This creates a hyper-dimensional resonant electret/crystal.

    Here is the genesis of such in modern physics. What you are looking at, is the reverse aspect of making the crystal, spoken of in the idea of melting the glass, and making nanostructures:

    Forming glass shapes: Lowering the 'softening temperature' via electric field

    On a serendipitous occasion, while attending a conference and listening to Rishi Raj, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, speak about the remarkable effect of moderate electrical fields on lowering the sintering temperature of certain ceramic powders, Himanshu Jain, a professor of materials science and engineering at Lehigh University, began to wonder if a similar phenomenon was possible in a glass—because he knew that the implications could be huge for glass technology.

    The two professors chatted briefly during a coffee break and a spontaneous collaboration to explore the possibility began.

    As the team of researchers at Lehigh University and the University of Colorado Boulder discovered and describe in Applied Physics Letters, from AIP Publishing, a similar, albeit slightly different, phenomenon is indeed possible in a glass.

    The basis of the team's work and experiments is fairly straightforward: glass softens upon heating in a furnace, so it can be readily observed as the onset of rapid deformation under the application of a compressive load. "We wanted to discover whether or not 'softening behavior' could be significantly enhanced by the additional application of an electric field," said Jain.

    So they ran a series of experiments centering on comparing softening temperatures while a rectangular piece of glass was heated at a constant rate under the simultaneous application of mechanical load, as well as with an electric field. Then, to "establish the generality of phenomenon and to develop an understanding of underlying mechanisms, we performed experiments on a few different glass compositions of varying properties," he noted.

    Forming glass products into specific shapes requires high temperatures, which translates to consuming a considerable amount of energy. "Electrical heating is widely used in the initial melting process, but not for 'forming operations,' which require glass to be soft and easily deformable, while also keeping the desired shape," explained Jain.

    The team's approach, which "lowers the softening temperature by electric field, offers the potential to save significant amounts of energy, but may also end up leading to innovative methods of 'micro-forming' because electric fields can be manipulated much more precisely and selectively than plain old heating," he added.

    For the team, actually observing the softening of glass at a significantly lower furnace temperature was the most exciting part of their experiments. There were, however, some surprises along the way. "One of these 'unexpected results' was that soon after the softening of glass, we observed a strong glow coming from the anode region," Jain revealed. "Upon continued application of electrical field, we observed smoke and substantial destruction of the sample."

    In terms of applications for the team's work, the results of their study will prove extremely useful for micro- and nano-forming operations in which micro- and nano-scale glass shaping is desirable, as well as for high-precision nanostamping. The same applies for modifying physical properties near electrodes.

    "Gaining a better understanding of the underlying phenomenon will help us learn the limitations of glass as an electrical insulator," noted Jain. "There's tremendous interest in using glass as a supercapacitor for energy storage, for example. But it's critical not to use glass that deforms easily in such applications, so it would be helpful to know in advance how the glass will behave."

    Now that the team has discovered this phenomenon of electric field-induced softening of glass, since they're a group of materials scientists, they've moved on to exploring its mechanisms and behavior during various stages.

    One way to do this is to perform experiments on a broader variety of glasses with specific characteristics. "This will help us to identify glass compositions for specific applications that exploit electric-field-induced softening," Jain said.

    Their goal now is to further develop electric-field-induced softening for practical applications with an industry partner.

    Atoms placed precisely in silicon can act as quantum simulator

    In a proof-of-principle experiment, researchers at UNSW Australia have demonstrated that a small group of individual atoms placed very precisely in silicon can act as a quantum simulator, mimicking nature - in this case, the weird quantum interactions of electrons in materials.

    The publication of this latest advance towards the development of a silicon-based quantum computer at UNSW coincided with the opening of the university's new quantum computing laboratories by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

    "Previously this kind of exact quantum simulation could not be performed without interference from the environment, which typically destroys the quantum state," says senior author Professor Sven Rogge, Head of the UNSW School of Physics and program manager with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T).

    "Our success provides a route to developing new ways to test fundamental aspects of quantum physics and to design new, exotic materials - problems that would be impossible to solve even using today's fastest supercomputers."

    The study is published in the journal Nature Communications. The lead author was UNSW's Dr Joe Salfi and the team included CQC2T director Professor Michelle Simmons, other CQC2T researchers from UNSW and the University of Melbourne, as well as researchers from Purdue University in the US.

    Two dopant atoms of boron only a few nanometres from each other in a silicon crystal were studied. They behaved like valence bonds, the "glue" that holds matter together when atoms with unpaired electrons in their outer orbitals overlap and bond.

    The team's major advance was in being able to directly measure the electron "clouds" around the atoms and the energy of the interactions of the spin, or tiny magnetic orientation, of these electrons.

    They were also able to correlate the interference patterns from the electrons, due to their wave-like nature, with their entanglement, or mutual dependence on each other for their properties.

    "The behaviour of the electrons in the silicon chip matched the behaviour of electrons described in one of the most important theoretical models of materials that scientists rely on, called the Hubbard model," says Dr Salfi.

    "This model describes the unusual interactions of electrons due to their wave-like properties and spins. And on of its main applications is to understand how electrons in a grid flow without resistance, even though they repel each other," he says.

    The team also made a counterintuitive find - that the entanglement of the electrons in the silicon chip increased the further they were apart.

    "This demonstrates a weird behaviour that is typical of quantum systems," says Professor Rogge.

    "Our normal expectation is that increasing the distance between two objects will make them less, not more, dependent on each other.

    "By making a larger set of dopant atoms in a grid in a silicon chip we could realise a vision first proposed in the 1980s by the physicist Richard Feynman of a quantum system that can simulate nature and help us understand it better," he says.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Note the interchangeability of quartz crystal vs silicon. Or, concurrently and in situ...note the quantum behaviour of nano dopants.
    Oh, and despite the drought my garden is coming along. Hosing daily...
    beautiful... but which part is eatable?
    The part nearest to the house is mostly ornamental.
    But the greater part of the property is fruit trees.
    I could post pictures of those too, but you would still not be able to savor them.
    We just finished a harvest of oranges from two dozen trees. Delicious Valencia oranges.
    Now there is a harvest coming up a of carambolas. The branches are touching the ground, from the weight.
    I got my freezer organized yesterday as there won't be enough room for them all in the fridge freezer.
    Then there are mandarins, limes, some sour cherry-like fruits of which the name escapes me.
    Also have several cassava plants, called Yucca here.
    Not doing lettuces, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, as the local farmers markets are abundant and very cheap.
    And I love going there.
    Our avocado trees are struggling as it isn't quite warm enough for them.
    We even have soursop trees, and the soursops are all inside plastic bags to protect them from a fruit fly that ruined our harvest last year.
    Organic farming is a lot of work, and most of us we do ourselves.
    It was so green this morning... And now it is thunder, lightning, freezing wind, and loud rain drumming...
