The thing is, articles such as the one cited, assume that the EU leaders want to improve life for the inhabitants of the EU nations. Yet their strategy has (for several decades) been to implement policies to terrorize, weaken, impoverish and kill EU citizens. The conduct of EU leadership through the Ukraine war has been fully consistent with anti-EU health and happiness motivations. If the EU leadership are able to devastate the continent in a world war, they will congratulate themselves on a job well done.

The EU is a terrible cancerous club of awful elitists and despicable anti-human types who have nothing but contempt for ordinary, non-billionaire people, I hope the Russians go on to expunge the world of their kind, and herald a new age for humanity where people can live with dignity and prosper in peace.

Ukraine SitRep: 'Mosquito' Tactics - S-200 Land Attacks

The U.S./NATO doctrine, as it had been taught to the Ukrainian units that were prepared for the counter-offensive, has failed.

As a comment allegedly made on a forum of veterans of the West Point Academy describes it:
Classic attacks under our combat regulations involve the preliminary suppression and destruction of enemy defensive positions by artillery and aircraft, as well as the simultaneous destruction of its combat controls to the depth of the defense zone and the prevention of the approaches of its reserves.

Since Ukrainians have almost no aviation and they are significantly inferior to the Russians in the amount of artillery, classic attacks lead to nothing but a massive loss of expensive military equipment on the way to Russian positions, disorganization and demoralization of attackers with subsequent retreat.

Almost three weeks of such attacks could not break through the Russian support band, in addition, as I was told by the G-3 from USAR EUR-AF in Stuttgart, they lost up to a quarter of our Bradleys, and they are now forced to urgently send two companies of Bradleys and a large quantity of other equipment to replenish and restore the combat readiness of two brigades of the Ukrainian strike unit.
When I was in officer school, pre-1991, NATO was less dependent on air-superiority than it is today. We also had some good air defense systems. Our artillery was not superior to the Soviet one but was well layered - from short, medium to long ranged systems - and would have created very significant damages. We also had good pioneer equipment that allowed for the crossing rivers and ditches as well as serious mine fields.

All this changed after the 1991 Gulf war in which U.S. air superiority and tank fist destroyed the Iraqi defense forces. That war was misconstrued as a big win when it in fact was simply the effect of a by far superior professional force over a unmotivated conscript army with old and often defunct weapons.

As an effect of the first Gulf war and later operations in Serbia, Afghanistan and again in Iraq the believe in NATO air-land doctrine was reinforced. Air superiority was the holy grail while the strong land force capabilities atrophied. An emphasis on guerilla suppression and on vehicles that could withstand simple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Iraq and Afghanistan further unbalanced the force.

It explains why the Ukrainian troops were miss-trained and miss-equipped for a counter-offensive even when the opposing force was a much harder to crack one than some goat herders from Helmand, Afghanistan.

The Ukrainian combined-arms-warfare units, without air-support and little artillery, were defeated. Western mining equipment failed to clear real 20 kilogram anti-tank mines from the heavy Ukrainian grounds. Armored Ukrainian troops were destroyed in mine fields (video) well before they could reach their targets.

Seeing that the tank heavy concept was failing the Ukrainians switched to a much older and more bloody technique:
In these conditions, our guys, together with Ukrainian commanders, developed tactics of “mosquito” promotion: continuous attacks of Russian positions by small tactical groups of Ukrainian infantry. The Russians, who are much more sensitive to losses in manpower, try to prevent close (“contact”) battles and retreat when Ukrainians reach their trenches, allowing artillery to destroy the enemy.

This usually succeeds: Ukrainians die or retreat. But this tactic has a positive effect. Several such attacks almost completely destroy the Russian position, most often with their own fire, after which the Russians are forced to retreat to a new line, where this tactic is repeated. That’s how in two weeks the Russians were pushed back three miles from Makarov’s strategically important position.

And this tactic is constantly improving. Our side believe that, at the continuing pace of such progress, in two weeks Ukrainians will be able to overcome the Russian support band and start storming their main line of defense, while maintaining the offensive potential of their strongest brigades. Perhaps that’s what General Milley meant yesterday about the ten weeks of the Ukrainian offensive.

This tactical technique has another important effect. Russians are forced to spend more artillery shells to repel such “mosquito” attacks, the stocks of which they replenish more slowly than they spend. And in two weeks of such battles, they may well approach the depletion of their stocks. Of course, this leads to great losses of Ukrainians but, as I said at the beginning, they are not sensitive to the death of their soldiers.

In addition, advances however small are a better justification for their death than unsuccessful attacks. And here, we must admit that the Russians today are much closer to the armies of Western countries than the Ukrainians are in this respect: the Russians take care of their soldiers ...
The "mosquito" technic replaces losses in armored vehicles will more heavy losses of infantry. The 128th Mountain Assault Brigade, which had led the fight on the western part of the Zaporozhia front, has just been pull back from the front line because it had lost too many of its soldiers.

After the Russian lost a few trenches to storming Ukrainian troops that did not care for their own losses they modified their own tactic. Its troops still leave the forward trenches when under pressure but they now booby-trap those before taking off.

These videos show how Ukrainian troops jump into an empty Russian trench only to be blown up by several small explosions. The Russian's need no artillery to do that. The trenches are kept intact but for a number Ukrainian corpses that can easily be moved aside.

A few days ago the Austrian Colonel Markus Reisner said in an interview (in German) that Ukraine had deployed all but four of its twelve reserve brigades that were supposed to be the armored counter-offensive fist that would defeat Russian defenses. Since than the 116th, 117th, and 118th Mechanized Brigades, part of last reserve, have been deployed near the Zaparozhia front.

They will replace the 128th and other units that were mostly destroyed while gaining only a few kilometer in the sparsely inhabited countryside. Half of Milley's ten weeks of counter-offensive operations have passed with no relevant gains for the Ukrainian side. The next five weeks will likely destroy the rest of the battle ready Ukrainian forces.

Another change has been made in long range fire capabilities on the Ukrainian side. Yesterday it launched several S-200 missiles against the Kerch bridge and other Russian targets. The Russian side says that all these attacks were defeated by its air-defense forces.

The S-200 is an air-defense missile first deployed in the mid 1960s. Unlike the Nike-Hercules and S-300 it does not have inherent land attack capabilities. Its original targeting system is unable to steer it towards certain points on the map:
The missile uses radio illumination mid-course correction to fly towards the target with a terminal semi-active radar homing phase.
The Ukrainians, likely with some foreign help, must have developed and tested a completely new targeting system to give the S-200 some land attack capability. Its maximum range of about 300 kilometer is sufficient to attack strategic targets on the Russian side. But even standard Russian air-defenses have no problem with it.

That this was even tried, shows again the hybris of western military thinking. Like 80 years ago there is still a believe that Russia is, economically and militarily, incapable of defending itself. Please read Conor Gallagher's latest piece on this:
Underestimate Russia at Your Own Risk: A Comparison of Hubris by Germany During WWII and Today’s Collective West
NATO's doctrine is still depending on air-superiority. It lacks infantry and good tanks. It constantly underestimates Russian capabilities.

How would the real fight look if it had to overcome the superior Russian air-defenses while depending itself on system like the very expensive Patriot with a poor record of hitting anything but its own forces?

Per multiple sources the Ukrainians made an attempt to strike the Kerch bridge during daytime hours (thus with a lot of civilian traffic on it) with British/French made Storm Shadow missiles. So far all missiles have been intercepted and the bridge has not been hit.

The work of the Crimean bridge, stopped after the missile attack, was resumed, said the Minister of Transport of Crimea.

In the Kerch area, a cruise missile was shot down by air defense forces, there were no casualties, the head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov said in his Telegram channel.

According to recent information, more than 4,800 mercenaries, mostly from the United States, Canada, and European countries, have been killed on the side of Kiev, while an additional 4,800 have fled from Ukrainian territory.

Several statements from the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding foreign mercenaries have been collected:

Since the beginning of the special operation, 11,675 foreign mercenaries from 84 countries have officially arrived to participate in combat actions in Ukraine.

In light of the failure of another wave of mobilization in Ukraine and with the aim of concealing the catastrophic losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Kiev regime has intensified recruitment efforts in Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries to attract foreign mercenaries.

Currently, there are still 2,029 mercenaries active within the ranks of the AFU.

In the past month, Ukraine has launched recruitment of mercenaries in Argentina, Brazil, Afghanistan, Iraq, and in areas of Syria controlled by the United States.

The majority of foreign mercenaries, over 2,600 individuals, have arrived in Ukraine from Poland.

The recruitment of foreign mercenaries by Kiev is carried out with the assistance of Western intelligence agencies, primarily the CIA.

Commanders of AFU units operating on the frontlines are not held accountable for losses among mercenaries.

Due to a significant decline in interest from Poland and the United Kingdom, Kiev has intensified recruitment activities in the United States and Canada.

This is exactly what Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky had planned to do on Tuesday, as BILD learned. In front of the heads of state and government of the 31 NATO member states and the whole world, Zelensky wanted to ask for his country to be admitted to NATO in Vilnius.

EU state fines citizens for celebrating WW2 victory over Hitler

For a number of Latvian nationals, the penalty was reportedly up to €350

Multiple Latvians have been fined for marking WW2 Victory Day online, local news outlet Delfi reported on Sunday, citing accounts of citizens affected by the penalties. The offences date back to celebrations on May 9 and apparently involve sharing pictures on social media and leaving comments to commemorate the anniversary.

It was not immediately clear how many Latvians were affected by the fines, reaching up to €350 ($384). According to the head of the Russian Union of Latvia, Miroslav Mitrofanov, “hundreds” of people may be involved.

“Naturally, we’re not aware of all the instances. Probably, hundreds of people will be fined for comments, pictures and likes related to May 9,” Mitrofanov told the outlet.

Latvia’s police have acknowledged imposing the fines, but refused to provide any explanation for their legal basis. “We will refrain from commenting on figures or providing any other information related to that,” police spokeswoman Simona Gravite told Delfi.

The penalties were imposed based on two articles of Latvia’s administrative code, which prohibit display of symbols used for “glorification of the Soviet totalitarian regime,” or “military aggression,” the outlet noted, citing documents it has obtained. It was not known how exactly the fines were applied under these articles, given that such display must be made in “public spaces,” and Latvia’s laws do not define social media pages as such

Alongside the other Baltic states, Latvia has ramped up its decades-long efforts to weed out its Soviet past amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Back in April, the country adopted legislation to prohibit “certain public events” on May 9, when Soviet-style WW2 Victory Day celebrations have traditionally been held. According to the law, Latvians are only allowed to celebrate what is known as ‘Europe Day’ on that date. Some people however, defied the ban, with over two dozen detained on May 9 this year, and with nearly 40 administrative cases launched.

Russian defense minister oversees contract soldier drills

Moscow has previously announced plans to create a large reserve force amid the ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has inspected newly formed military units during drills based on combat experience gained during the Ukraine conflict.

In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said that Shoigu had checked “the organization of combat training of contract soldiers in newly formed… military units” at the training grounds of the Southern Military District, without specifying the exact location.

The military personnel are receiving instruction in tactics and weapons proficiency while learning how to drive and fire from tanks, with a focus on how to destroy Ukraine’s Western-supplied hardware. The entire intensified combat training course takes 38 days, the ministry said.

Shoigu inspected troops that are honing their combat skills on Russian T-90 tanks, the ministry noted, adding that servicemembers have a high opinion of the advanced armor, the statement read.

The ministry also shared a two-minute clip from the training ground, featuring a long line of tanks as well as intensive combat exercises with a lot of shooting in an urban environment and in field trenches.

“All training involves new military hardware and modern equipment,” the minister stressed, adding that soldiers are being instructed by veteran officers that have gained battle experience during the Ukraine conflict.

According to the statement, all of the soldiers have already undergone individual battle training, with operational coordination training now underway.

Shoigu said last month that Russia was recruiting a massive reserve force. At the time, the minister said that on average about 1,300 people – roughly equivalent to one regiment – join the military under a contract every day. In total, some 114,000 contract soldiers and 52,000 volunteers had enlisted in the army, he added.

His remarks came after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow did not need to call up more soldiers for now, noting that the army was enjoying a steady inflow of volunteers.

Russia announced a partial mobilization last September calling to arms some 300,000 reservists, citing the need to protect the long frontline against Ukrainian troops.

I found this a little challenging to believe, so I checked the website (https://nato.ws/cps/en/natohq/news_216762.html) and sure enough, all that was in the article.

But then I realized that the actual official NATO website is https://nato.int, and https://nato.ws (which has no home page of its own) appears to be a very clever, slightly falsified near-clone, linking to everything on the official site but with some mischievous fake articles added in. (I might be wrong! But anyone reading this who may be interested, please do take a look and compare the two sites.)

In this interview (always excellent, Judge Napolitano with Larry Johnson, each week), Johnson makes a passing comment that Ray McGovern was talking to veteran journalist Robert Scheer about all things Russia and Ukraine, and Robert Scheer was genuinely incredulous that Ukraine was losing the war.

That interested me so much that I looked it up. The audio interview is embedded in the foot of this page:
There are buttons where you can skip ahead 30 seconds, or skip back 15 seconds. Scheer is asking McGovern to pretend to brief Biden on Ukraine, so McGovern happily goes ahead with the play-acting.

McGovern is a little like the Old Man of the Mountains telling a long story (whatever he's talking about!), but it gets interesting after about 20:00 or so. You can start in round about then.

A few minutes after that, the Biden-briefing game is suddenly all over when Scheer breaks in and cannot believe what McGovern is saying — because Scheer, like many American patriots, has simply been dutifully following American media.

Soon after that, McGovern talks at length about Iraq and the Vietnam war (when Americans were similarly deceived), but at 44:00 Scheer brings it back to topic and asks again what's really happening in Ukraine — "because the war has been going terribly for the Russians."

Scheer genuinely believed that with all his integrity. He continued to quote all the media reports. But to his credit, he was truly wanting to understand what McGovern was trying to tell him.

Then the conversation really gets going. 50-55 minutes in, it's fascinating. One really gets to empathize with someone who'd been totally duped by mainstream propaganda. You can totally feel Scheer's cognitive dissonance as he struggles to comprehend.

It was high entertainment — but also a really sobering wake-up call about just how obedient, unquestioning and malleable even respected and highly experienced professional journalists can be. This is Robert Scheer's Wiki page. Like McGovern, he's in his 80s. And even he had not a single clue what was really happening.

If you do listen to some of this, then Enjoy.

In the conflict over NATO's eastward enlargement, which had been brewing since 1994, the EU, in its own interests, should have tried to mediate between the geopolitical ambition of the USA in expanding its global dominance and Russia's fears of being militarily encircled by NATO and cut off from its access to the Black Sea.

In 1990, only one year after the end of the Cold War, all European states, as well as the USA and Canada, solemnly pledged, in the “Charter of Paris for a New Europe”, to build a common peaceful Europe spanning from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast, including Russia, a Europe that would be free of wars and military blocs.

I accidentally discovered something about this.

The common myth is that the strategy is as recorded at the University of Virginia:

...crafted in the mid 1990s by the Clinton administration...

whereas there was actually a huge bi-partisan handshake among the likes of Bush and Clinton, Helms and Biden, as recorded in some congressional records ca. 2000. Notice at that point, Biden has occupied Helms's prior post--Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate.

Brookings adds the not-surprising work of Helms and McCain on the Baltic States.

Here, we are going to learn two things at once.

First, in the separation of powers, the Senate has control over Treaties, which is why they have Foreign Relations. The Executive branch has the State Department, a far later office than this separation of powers granted by the Constitution.

Secondly, Helms was quite proud of his ability to argue against the State Department on foreign policy. In general, that would mean he is disputing the CFR.

Now in the Congressional records linked above, you will see language about how "Russia has this great opportunity for dialogue."

    What does that mean?

Khruschev accepted the United Nations for one reason: USSR gets a veto.

They also happened to ask if they could join the original NATO and got blank stares.

What Helms was so proud of--and what was unconditional and against the presidential administration--was verily to prevent this veto power in any NATO-related treaties. He quite articulately describes President Wilson hating the Senate during the League of Nations era, and runs up against the president To Say No:

Quote Early in the process the Foreign Relations Committee raised a number of reservations about the administration’s approach to NATO expansion. For example, Dr. Henry Kissinger came and testified before the committee about his concern that by giving Russia a voice in NATO decision making, we were letting the fox into the henhouse. And so the committee drafted conditions in the Resolution of Ratification that built a “fire wall” in the NATO-Russia relationship. Also, over the next nine months, I and fellow committee members worked with the Secretary of State to address a number of other concerns. The result: The Senate overwhelmingly approved NATO expansion. Had the administration dug in its heels and expected the committee to rubber-stamp the expansion protocols, I can assure you the Senate would still be deliberating the wisdom of NATO expansion today.

Clinton would have probably passed something that would have allowed Russia to "nyet" the entrance of new countries. Instead, they were given an EU-style "dialog process", which, they say they showed up to it and recorded a pack of lies, and here we are.

Of course, it was self-justified, wise, and good, in their eyes at the time. On Senate-related matters, the CFR does not automatically get their way--this one was close, but flawed, and they would not have been effective despots.

Helms of course was more or less a Bircher who aims to suppress "communism" no matter what.

More than 120 countries have signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of the weapons. Russia, Ukraine and the US have all declined to sign the treaty. Since the adoption of the convention in 2008, 99% of global stockpiles have been destroyed, according to the Cluster Munition Coalition.

I felt I needed to educate myself about this. I thought others might appreciate the info.

They're little bomblets, that scatter in all directions randomly to explode all at once like grenades. Militarily speaking, they're an efficient way of killing (say) a whole group of 100 troops with just one shell.

But that's not the issue. Some of them don't explode there and then, maybe because they don't impact anything solid that triggers the explosive. So to handle that, after the attack is over, a radio signal is sent to the UNexploded bomblets to THEN explode them on command. That's supposed to clear the remaining danger, so that (e.g.) the troops that fired the cluster munition can now advance safely.

So when someone like Admiral John Kirby is talking about 'duds' and 'the dud rate', he's referring to the unexploded bomblets which (a) fail to detonate on impact, and (b) fail to detonate from the radio signal.

So they just sit there, unexploded. The explosive is still active. But no-one knows where they are.

The reason they're banned by many countries is that even quite a while later when a war is over, they can explode if (e.g.) a civilian drives over them in a car (they're not powerful enough to damage a tank), or a farmer's tractor hits one, or some children start playing ball with one. (They're small and round.)

So a 'dud' simply means that it's silently lying in wait for a civilian to find it and be killed or injured much later. If there were no 'duds' at all (i.e. they 100% all exploded, or were exploded, during an offensive), then they'd be a perfectly legal weapon, as terrible as they are. (The Russian TOS-1 flamethrower system is even more terrible, but nothing remains that can possibly harm anyone after its use in an attack.)
