Default Are there truly evil human beings?

This post is intended to start a discussion, I don't have the answers. It's just something I think about.

Are evil people are created at birth due to their circumstances?.

Is there a consistency in "evil" people's behavior? Are they always evil?

Can a benign person be evil if there is no apparent evil behavior toward others?

If there are evil people, are they evil in all circumstances?

Christianity spends a lot of time speaking about good and evil, is it the same in other belief systems?

Is there a place in the whole of things for good vs. evil? Is is a necessary force for moving the evolution of mankind?

I'll stop here before I get too esoteric. Thanks

    • I was watching this video yesterday discussing the same question!
Although I disagree with Richard Dawkins a lot concerning many controversial topics (among others how he deals with Rupert Sheldrake's work and how he discusses UFOlogy) and that will not change after studying his latest interviews concerning Christianity asking LEGIT questions!

Sometimes the quality of the (deeper) questions are more profound than the presumed "answers".

    Yes.

On a superficial level, I would say Buddhism is closely akin to Christianity, in terms of moral values.

Translated to English, I would say I Confess, constantly, work for Salvation every day, am on a course of Atonement, and fight evil wherever I find it.

The main difference is I suppose we do not re-ify Evil as a sanctified "state of being"; it is just a series of evil acts, which can be prevented.

The second difference is we do not have the finger of g-d writing in stone the rules we must obey.

Instead we have no answers--the *whole* thing that might be compared to "religion" is the chore of us figuring out for ourselves what works best. We give the positive values as axioms and it stops there.

Similarly, we have only one criterion of truth, i. e. does this make beings feel good? If not, then your "truth" amounts to a "pile of facts" which are basically useless and without soul.

The opposite is instantly sensible by what Patanjali calls "Citta Vrttis". This means a disturbing sensation like a series of whirlpools throwing one's nervous system into discord.

If by your very presence, you cause Citta Vrttis in other beings, then you ought to be expelled.

This is considered harmful, same as any crime.

The perpetrators may have been born that way, or, they may have acquired it, and so we have a variety of case studies where something went wrong. I have personally experienced so many of them, I remember little else, because it is not just the stuff that is in the news, there are plenty of "mini-evils" going around town every day. Perhaps about 1/3 of them could be described as "not having a soul"--they are so sick that in this lifetime, there is nothing that will eventually relieve them. Many others will repent if the suffering boomerangs and hits home. Not many will just wake up one day and decide "I don't need to do this any more".

Evil is ignorance of short-term or long-term consequences.

As psychic Gigi Young outlines in her latest lecture, thousands of years of spiritual traditions, from both the East and Christianity, support the practice of exorcism, and therefore the reality that human beings can be very influenced and/or "possessed" by demonic entities, and will act accordingly to commit evil.

My mom told me evil comes from people but to me that sounds ridiculous I'm sorry. I still think its Satan like as is described in the Koran. I used to be Christian but now I'm agnostic. I still believe in a higher power too

This is one of the main reasons I was Christian. I'm agnostic now and don't really believe in demons anymore, I think it's all the work of Satan as described in the Koran. He can make illusions and is a Jinn. I think hypnotism should not exist, thats why possession is even possible.

Quote At its core, evil is defined as profound immorality, wickedness, and actions that cause deliberate, unnecessary pain, suffering, or destruction. However, the exact meaning shifts depending on how you look at it:

The Philosophical View: Evil is often defined as the intentional infliction of harm or the extreme exploitation and violation of others. Many philosophers argue it boils down to an absence of empathy or a stark failure to consider the well-being and autonomy of others.

The Psychological View: Psychologists and sociologists suggest "evil" is often a label used to describe extreme cruelty, sadism, or actions stemming from prejudice and ignorance. Some thinkers even view it as a psychological construct used to dehumanize adversaries, justifying atrocities in the name of "righteousness".

The Religious View: Across many faiths, evil is understood as a fundamental departure from moral or divine order. It is seen as a force or choice that disrupts harmony, breaks trust, and goes against spiritual goodness.

Ultimately, the concept serves as a universal benchmark for extreme destructive behavior, though the specific criteria for what constitutes evil can vary based on individual, cultural, and spiritual beliefs.
Depending on a person's perspective, behaviour can be labelled as evil or not. Ironically, a person or group can label another person or group as evil and thus behave in an evil way (extreme destructive behaviour). That is why I think it is essential to judge the behaviour and not the person, and to not fall into the trap of labelling some violence as just and other violence as evil. We are but human and I have often resorted to calling Israel and its people evil, and even come to the conclusion sometimes that they cannot be redeemed or rehabilitated.

For example, the Hamas-led attack on military outposts and settlements to obtain hostages was not justified; understandable, predictable to the point of inevitability and avoidable but not justified. Was it evil, in whole or in parts? But the Western-backed reaction is evil because it is ongoing extreme destructive behaviour, none of which is justified. Understandable, predictable to the point of inevitable and avoidable? One could apply the same test to the Israelis and Western supporters. It is not simply a matter of who uses the greater violence (Israel of course) but also who has the power to stop the cycle of violence, and who uses the most extreme violence periodically (also Israel). It is interesting that the Hamas leaders who were named by the ICC (three), who were all killed by Israel, never rejected the jurisdiction of the ICC nor threatened it in any way, proclaiming complete innocence. The Israelis ... they protest too much!

Overall, I think 'extreme destructive behaviour' is a good benchmark to use to decide if something or someone is evil or not. The US has often crossed that line, as did the British empire, etc. Humans have free choice, and they are just as likely to make God or Jesus or Allah or Yahweh or Satan or the Devil or evil spirits the scapegoat for their choices, whether through ignorance or knowing. I suppose historical figures such as Jesus and Muhammad gave the message that redemption (forgiveness and turning away from evil) is possible, for those who do evil through ignorance and those who knowingly choose to do evil.

Example: the killing of the children of Minab in a double tap strike by a drone was evil.
Everyone involved (Trump, Musk, Thiel, military, Israel ...) did an evil deed that day.
Acknowledgement of the evil deed and one's involvement, directly or indirectly, opens the possibility of redemption through remorse.
Denial, justification, distraction in refusing to acknowledge the evil and one's involvement offers no redemption, no matter what your knowledge or motivations are.
Evil is eventually a choice, but so is redemption, and the latter does not have to be through religion.

As for evil or the Devil or evil entities (maybe even aliens) being external beings that trap and corrupt humans ... thought forms create these entities. Jesus cannot save you if you do not recognise that you chose to do evil, knowingly or unknowingly!

"I don't think it was us." - Trump again denies that the US hit the school in Minab.

I love how this is worded thank you very much!

When I was little, I used to shoplift. I knew it was wrong but did it anyway because I knew there would be no conséquences since I was a minor. Eventually I got caught, and after that I never stole another thing again. I guess that was pretty evil of me but I don't feel sorry in the least.

I just cant wrap my head around people being the source of evil. Maybe my mother was right though.

I've had some pretty evil feeling dreams and I think I understand about the thought forms too. She told me you have to tell them to STOP

A very small percentage of people who come to Earth are born with a predisposition toward evil behavior. I believe this occurs because their souls have not achieved a balance from previous lifetimes, resulting in a spiritual makeup that is fundamentally out of sync. Most humans begin life as pure and good souls, free from bias, hatred, corruption, racism, violence, greed, deception, and ignorance. We all arrive with a divine essence or divine energy.

Most people are missing the entire concept of evil; they view it in a social and legal context and fail to understand that preventing evil encompasses moral and spiritual healing. Those committing evil are rebelling spiritually because they are in a spiritual imbalance. Environmental factors in their life have led them away from a divine essence and a perfect moral compass they arrived with. When we begin to understand that the cure for evil is spiritual and not legal, is when the world begins to heal.

Honestly, I think reincarnation is part of the problem. I mean, hows anyone supposed to learn anything if they keep forgetting?

This world is such a mess that I never wanted to bring a child into it. But that happened and child services took him away. I knew him until he was five. He never talked. What a sweet little soul. I worry that this world will end up corrupting him and slowly gain a prédisposition towards evil.
